Very good, but not 5-stars. My lunch had a few slip-ups that, IMHO, keeps it from 5 stars: chicken was somewhat overcooked, and my entree didn't come with any vegetable (not even a small side salad). The server also wasn't the most pleasant person. We had reservations for 6:30. Got right in no issues at all. Sat down and went over specials and explained it very well. They actually ate the specials so it was refreshing to have first hand knowledge. Had the Caesar Salad and it was good. Wife had Spinach salad and loved it. Crab Cake was the best part of the meal... Wish they had like 2 as an entree with w vegetable side. That would be incredible. I had the best burger I have ever had. Yes I had the burger... My wife had the Angolotti and she loved that as well. I have to update my review. The day after the incident that I describe below the manager of Heirloom left me a voice mail. She was apologetic for the experience I had, assured me that Heirloom strives to provide exemplary service, and offered a gift certificate to entice my return. She could not have handled herself and the situation better. While the gift certificate is a gracious offer that I will not decline, the apology and acknowledgement of the experience is even more valuable to me. Sadly, it is not often that this kind of prompt and courteous customer attention is offered by businesses. Additionally, the owner called today to express sentiments similar to those offered by his manager. In an instant, they restored all of the warm, fuzzy feelings that I have for this establishment and all of my positive experiences at Heirloom now overshadow this minor hiccup. Well done! read more

We have had three great meals at this restaurant. Not only is the food excellent, flavorful and inventive, the staff is friendly and helpful. Cocktails are very good and the wine list is excellent. The pours on the wines by the glass are sizable. They even made up some blue cheese stuffed olives for the perfect martini. The chicken livers are one of the dishes they are 'known for'. I'm not partial to them, but each time our party ordered them and everyone loved them. We haven't tried their special burger yet, but maybe next time. Spend a few extra minutes and walk around downtown Midway during your trip. Lots of quaint stores and shops to explore. read more

The menu was mouth watering to read with lots of different options. We ended up ordering the monkfish and agnolotti with the mange salad. I happened upon the Heirloom driving through Kentucky and getting off at different exits to look at the small towns. The Heirloom is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. My lunch consisted of velvety squash soup, boneless chicken breast, lightly breaded and fried over pureed potatoes. The presentation was beautiful and the food tasted delightful. Beau was my waiter and he was charming and helpful. I kept exclaiming how wonderful everything was and he didn't act surprised. I am sure he hears this every day. Stopped here for lunch while traveling and are so glad we did. The service was excellent even when I dropped and broke a glass of water on the food. Even though we were almost finished I could see in my husband's face that he was disappointed to have to pass up the last few bites of his blackened shrimp and grits. I had tried them too and they were very flavorful practically exploding with goodness in my mouth. My Caesar Salad was crispy crunchy with the perfect ratio of dressing and freshly grated Parmesan, and very moist chicken. My wife and I stopped in for lunch today and we overwhelmed with an incredible experience dining st this fine restaurant. I always look for Shrimp and Grits on the menu and was pleasantly surprised to find it. As a business traveler, I've had Shrimp and Grits all across the country. I can honestly say this was some of the very best and most creative version I've ever enjoyed. The blending of flavors, colors, and food texture was exquisite. My wife decided to try the Warm Spinach Salad with added chicken. Once again, the blend of flavors and color was incredible. The salad was large enough that I benefited with the last few bites. I especially loved the goat cheese. We both cannot wait to go back and try the dinner menu. If you like fine dining in the Lexington area, this restaurant is it for you. After moving to Lexington a couple of years ago, my husband and I discovered the Holly Hill Inn, a beautiful home turned restaurant at Leestown Rd and 64. Five course meal kind of experience with excellent food and service. Even as a vegetarian, I had a wonderful dining experience. We took our visiting friends and family to this restaurant again and again and were disappointed with the apparent steady decline of the restaurant's food. First, the vegetarian options dropped off the menu leaving me in a position to ask for entrees with the meat left out (still paying full price). And most recently, the barely palatable casserole I was served had hair in it. Needless to say, we haven't been back since. With some inlaws in town, we decided on a meal out. While driving into the corridor of restaurants in Midway, we decided to eat at the Black Tulip. The restaurant, however, was full. The person at the door suggested we try a new little restaurant just a few doors down called Heirloom and I have never had a better 2nd choice experience. Months later we still haven't been to the Black Tulip because Heimloom is "it." First, the decor...Soft, modern, warm. It is enough to be visually interesting but subtle enough not to overwhelm the social experience of your meal. Second, the food. Oh, the food. The chef is very vegetarian friendly and even the offerings where the meat is removed are fully satisfying and delicious. The ingredients are fresh and well prepared, not overcooked or covered up with sauces, dressings, etc. The portions are expertly made. Appetizers are just that. Entrees leave you satisfied. Desserts leave you in ecstasy. Third, the service. The staff are knowledgeable and, most importantly, professional. These aren't college kids at a summer job, these are people who know what they are doing. They are friendly and attentive and have good timing. Lastly, the prices. Considering the quality of the service and food, I think this is one of the most reasonably priced, high end dining options I've ever had. A dinner for my husband and myself can go from about 50 dollars to 100 or better depending on the drinks and how selfish we want to be with dessert (and you will want to be selfish). This is the "new" place we take all our friends and family to. We plan on going there again tomorrow and I can't wait. read more

They really need to update their winelist. I had taken the trouble to look up several of the wines online to pick the best ones. Then when we ordered them we found they brought different vintages, including a replacing a high-end 2009 Napa cab with a 2011. The 2009 was an excellent year, and the 2011 was a crappy one. They did this for several wines. These were $100 wines. read more

The nearly 5 star rating filled us with anticipation but given the high hopes had we were disappointed with our lunch. He had the fish with fries and I had the shrimp "capellini". The fish breading and the fries were soggy or perhaps the fries were undercooked. Anyways, he was quite disappointed but ate it all. There was a definite lack of crunch or crispiness in any of his food. Flavor was ok but the tartar sauce was quite good. The capellini is in quotations because the pasta is really zucchini. Also included tasty tomatoes, black bean, deep fried chick peas (great addition and crunch). topped with a lemony vinaigrette. This was good and got even better as I ate it. I should've tossed the zucchini more with the dressing as it pooled in the bottom which made the lower zucchini nummy while the upper was a bit bland. Blackened shrimp cooked well and tasty. Went there today from Richmond as part of a small road trip. Excellent ambiance, service and food! We ordered the fried chicken and the burger. OMG, to die for. The fried chicken was served on creamy, buttery mashed potatoes and covered lightly with a gravy then topped with lemony wilted arugula. The combo was fantastic. The burger is one of the best I have had! Not sure what makes it so good and juicy, but it is all that. Their brioche buns are to die for, would love to find out where they get theirs so I could buy. BUT, the dessert was even more spectacular. Usually don't get dessert, but the options looked intriguing. We shared an (expensive) order of Pistachio Cake with Lemon Mousse and Lemon Curd. excellent!
