Long overdue review. My family went to helens about two months ago to get my son a bike and my wife a bike with a child seat for my daughter. We made the right choice. The associate who helped was friendly and very knowledgeable, I can't remember his name (sorry) but I remember he went to Washington State ( we talked NCAAF). My son fell in love with a mountain bike and my wife found a road bike. Both bikes were in stock and ready for purchase. Prices were very fair as well. I called about a hydraulic brake upgrade on my ebike. He told me it would be about $250. I rode the bike all the way over there and arranged someone to come pick me up. At drop off he quoted me $500. I said, "you told me 250 on the phone." and he looked at me deadpan, straight faced and said, "well there's two of them." As a bicycle shop manager, he definitely knew there were two brakes at the time of the phone quote. And the honest move would have been to quote for two. Don't let them rip you off. read more

Nice local bike shop, conveniently located with lots of parking. I've bought at least seven or eight bicycles here for me and my family. Brought one of my bikes in a couple days ago to get some pedals changed out and they did it for free and I was in and out of there in about five minutes. Good selection, and good service. read more

I brought in a 3 month electric Rad Bike for mechanical maintenance; since I constructed the bike myself I wanted to have a professional examine it and make sure it was safe. They did minimal work and made sure it was ok and let me know it was time to pick it up. Unfortunately, the electric motor didn't work when I picked it up and the motor wouldn't work. Obviously I was pretty upset about this but after calming down it was clear that it wasn't their fault. To their credit the manager has been in near constant contact with me, reached out to Rad Bike on my behalf, and called other shops to learn how to fix the issue (Helen's doesn't normally work on Rad Bikes). I don't have a resolution yet but I trust I'll get there and really appreciate how they communicated throughout this. I'm confident it'll be fixed. Do I wish my bike just worked? Yes. Am I glad I took it to Helen's Cycles? Yes. I'd definitely recommend them to anyone who asked, because most importantly they stand by their work and know how to run a service business. I'd confidently take another bike to them or say it's a great place to buy a new one. Also, don't buy a Rad Bike. read more

Fair prices and knowledgeable staff. Bike repairs are honest and quicker than the other bike shops in the area. Trilab often overcharges and the service quality is low. Had my bike fixed here twice and both times the repairs were excellent. Most recently I had a repair in my tri bike that Trilab had messed up right before a race. Daniel fixed it while I waited with notable care and precision. I could tell that he really wanted to make it perfect, rather than rushing the repair. I highly recommend these guys! read more

Time and time again, this place does not disappoint! I went in a couple of days ago to check if my bike needed new tires. They are limiting the number of people in the shop as a COVID precaution (appreciate it). I was helped by Seth. He was honest, informative, and was not pressuring me! I've been to other shops and their customer service sucks because it legit feels like sharks swimming around their bate! He gave me some advice on what type of tired to purchase and also showed me a few racks for my car! I purchased an air pump and he told me he can happily install it on my bike so I won't lose it. I came here with my daughter for a helmet and a bike in an attempt to buy local instead of a big chain. Walked around 10 min and no one offered to help. Asked an employee for help and he said he was busy even though he was literally just standing around. Asked someone else else to help and he was "busy" as well. So we left. I guess they reserve their customer service for guys who look like they may drop 6 grand on a bike. Side note: my husband, a white male, has never had this issue when he goes there alone My advice to the company would be to keep in mind that your favored demographic may have wives and children. I continued to walk around the store waiting to be asked if I needed help, finally I had to ask for help after watching everyone else get help. These bikes aren't cheap so I prefer to spend my hard earned black dollars where I am acknowledged. Came in here today to pick up a bike for my self And was about to buy 2 bikes, when I asked for a discount the manager didnt want to negotiate a deal, he told me no on the spot and to be honest for the first time I did feel discriminated maybe because of my skin color. Bought a Bontrager DuoTrap s speed sensor. got it home and opened up the box. Looked like it was previously opened but all the parts were there and didn't look like it was used. Upon setup, the battery was already installed and there were scuff marks around the battery compartment door. It was either returned or used, and yet they charged me full price. Not cool. I'll be returning tomorrow for a exchange or my money back. Update.. returned item with no hassle. They didn't have anymore for exchange. Worker apologized. Upon leaving I started to feel bad for leaving the original mediocre review. Went to another shop and got a new one. Opened it up and realized on the original one I got, even all the inside packaging was missing! Be careful buying from Helens. Beware of return policies which are not listed on receipts but are listed on a piece of paper on a countertop which is covered by a product. I purchased two pairs of shoes here and inadvertently got the wrong clips that would not fit the bike we had. I drove 1.5 hours and came to return the shoes or do a store credit because the receipt return policy mentioned nothing about shoes, and they showed me a return policy about clips on shoes that was a piece of paper taped to a countertop with another product sitting on top of it so it could not be read. During my purchase experience no one mentioned this policy. Otherwise I would have checked to double confirm that the clips were right. Now I have $318.59 worth of shoes that cannot be used. The employee barely apologized. I haven't experienced customer service this bad since the last time I went to Walmart, where I have also vowed to never go again. Please if you have a policy put it clearly on your receipt. read more

Top notch experience. Worked with Johnny, and i feel like i definitely got the ride bike for me. I'm commuting a few days a week via cycling and the Trek he recommended was not only well equipped but in my price range. Plus i was able to get a few accessories and upgrades. Everyone here was nice, the process was not intimidating or an overload of info. Having not bought a new bike for like 20 years this was as easy as it could get. Great store. Nice staff. Big selection. I felt that when spending $700 on a bike, I shouldn't be rushed out the door. No test ride. About 30 seconds of tutorial on my new bike while another customer stood waiting for assistance. Was offered only the most expensive accessories. If I wanted a kickstand it would have been another $15. Really? This is the first bike I have bought in 15 years so I would have appreciated a little more white glove treatment, which is what I expected at Helen's. Not 100% sure my bike is even the right size or that my handlebars are the proper height. Still love the bike. Hoping for the best. read more

But it took about 10 minutes until anyone helped me which was frustrating. Nobody seemed interested in my business. I felt they were honest in telling me about the bike and its features and no pressure to buy. I like the bike they recommended that I bought. I've been a long helen's fan until today. I have my first 200 mile race on Sat. Brought bike in 3:45 Tuesday. I had to have the bike Friday before noon. The mechanic said he could do the work. I thanked the mechanic with bottle of spirits as a "pre thank you this is important". Thursday at 2:30 I show up and nothing has been done. No phone calls made. Bike has been sitting. The mechanic is embarrassed and trying to tell me what I want to hear. That's a bad sign. The normally animated managers are suddenly quiet and not helping the mechanic or me. That's a really bad sign. Zero ownership. I take my bike out. I have no trust. On Tuesday I had many other service options. Today. Thursday at 5pm my options are extremely limited. read more

This afternoon, September 9, 2020, at about 1:30 pm, I had the misfortune of going to Helen's Bike Shop, Manhattan Beach. When I approached the door there were signs on it informing me that the store was above capacity and that I had to wait outside until an employee came to the door to let me in. I patiently waited outside for about 5 minutes as then peered in the window. I made eye contact with an employee. He knew I was outside. I waited another few minutes and peered in the window again and saw only one person on the store. I still waited. Finally the one customer exited the store and walked by me. I then expected to be let in the store, although I was very confused as to how one customer could bring the store to its capacity. I continued to wait and then finally after about another 5 minutes I walked in. The store was empty. I asked the cashier, who was on the phone, if I could come in and he said yes. I told him that I had been waiting outside for some time and that maybe they should check on customers waiting. At that point he told me to go back outside and he would let me in when he felt like it. I told him to go screw himself and walked out. I went to another local bike shop and purchased a $2,700 bike, with shoes, pedals and a new bike pants. Helen's bike shop obviously does not need your business. Go elsewhere. read more

A bit disappointed at Helen's today. (9/27)Hubby, an avid bike rider ready to get another bike and wave cell helment , went back to test ride the Trek Madone SL 7 and I was going to test ride an Allant. We didn't mind the wait outside but service sucked today and we got a kid that helped us that clearly wasn't too knowledgeable about bikes and barley put air in the tires when hubby asked him to test ride. After them not having a battery for the bike he wanted, he test rode another one with the same shifters but that one wasn't charged either yet the sales"kid" told him to go test ride it up the hill (with non working shifters) . I didn't bother test riding my bike nor get the helmet. Chargers won't come in for another 2 weeks or so. We normally like Helen's and hubby got both his cannondales from Helen's and the got my trek bike from there as well and he recently took a friend to help choose a bike but I think they just lost a customer or 3. No info was asked for so they could call him once the chargers came in and they didn't give us his credit card and ID back and we didn't realize it until he got to the truck so he had to go back in and get it. What a waste of time!!!!Went next door to REI to try on the same helmets and check out their electronic bikes for me. Staffing was more helpful there and when they couldn't answer our questions, they found someone who did and not just give us answers that made my husband and I look sideways at each other. Guess we'll be taking a trip to the Trek store soon. Update-(9/28) Hubby emailed Trek and the customer service was beyond what he expected and we haven't even been to the store yet! He sent me this text while I was at work.... "Trek Bikes in Pasadena is good on CS!!! Dude hit me up from home before he got to the store. He's ordering a bike for me to test ride. He's gonna help u find an electric bike and he has the helmet We talked several times via email before he even got to the store " Looks like we'll be going to Pasadena soon. If you're looking or a Trek, I would definitely say contact/go to the Trek store instead of Helen's. Nobody bothered to contact us from Helen's at all today. read more

To Casper and Sales Manager Greg in regards to your response: Again, the point has been missed. What would have been best in this scenario is if I had been respected as a customer. I was not informed about the back room and I immediately left when told I was not allowed. Please hold a customer service training for Sales Manager Greg - so he will be more equipped to treat customers kindly, and with more professionalism in the future. I would hate for anyone to have a degrading experience like this imposed by Sales Manager Greg. He put me in a corner with a strict 10 minute timer to charge my phone in order to get an Uber XL so I could get my two bikes out of there, I was sitting on the ground like a child in time out after spending over $150. Today I received the BEST service 15 minutes before closing time! I live in Pacific Palisades- and I wanted to buy a gift for a young man- the catch- it had to be delivered TONIGHT before 7:00 PM! I called Santa Monica, couldn't help. Wanted to, but no deliveries. Called Westwood- no luck. Finally- I called Manhattan Beach- and Kennan answers the phone, ready to go to town for me! Let's do this was his response! So Money!!! We selected a great bike, he installed the lights, the bell and selected a lock and a safe helmet. I then asked Keenan if I could hire him to deliver the bike to my home before 7:00 pm. Kennan said he was my guy for the job! The whole purchase was executed in 15 minutes. Helen's has been an institution in the LA cycling world for years, even still the staff are friendly and helpful rather than pretentious like many local bike shops. I've been going to Helen's since moving back to LA in 2010 and anytime I've taken one of my bikes to another shop, I've regretted it. I won't get into the details but suffice to say I've never had anything less than a stellar experience at Helen's. Today was no exception, I brought my Triathlon bike in for a tuneup and had some questions about a few odd noises which I had tried to resolve myself but to no avail.
