Never in my Caribbean life have I ever thrown away a piece of oxtail until I tasted the MSG filled food served at Helen's Kitchen. I know Knorr and Maggie cubes have MSG but they add flavor this food tasted like they just dumped a whole bunch of Accent in the pot. This is the worst and I mean THE WORST Jamaican food I've ever eaten in the States. THE WORST! They put all the Accent because the flavor of the food is so dull. I didn't taste any scotch bonnet, onion or curry just browning and MSG on my oxtails, oh and oil. My husband ordered the jerk chicken, and the meat tasted old, no spice, pretty much just baked chicken with bbq sauce on the side. Oh lawd, before I forget the rice and peas. They should be shut down in the name of our ancestors for making rice and peas so terrible. The rice had no flavor, no thyme, rice was under down and I think they put Accent in the rice too. Beef patty was trash also. I see the other reviews saying their food is so good and I wanted to like it so bad because we drove 30 minutes to get it but if you've had real authentic Jamaican before Helen's kitchen is not it. The stew chicken was great! The curry chicken was okay, but a bit gritty as if curry had been added after it had already been cooked. Helen's Kitchen is the most overlooked diamond of Caribbean Food in Houston. Helen's food taste like ALL the love you could ever want from anyone and the place is clean, fresh and feels like home. When you sit down, you feel as though you've been there before and Helen and her husband treat you like family. I ordered food for the first time for me and my family. After reading so many good reviews I felt confident the food was going to be good. Unfortunately the food was awful. I decided it was best to get basic food since it was my first time at this restaurant so I got jerk chicken... it was the driest chicken I've ever had in my whole life. Also the chicken was barely seasoned which is absolutely crazy being that it was jerk chicken. The meal came with sauce that I had to pour over all of it to make it edible. The sauce or gravy had a hint of jerk and a hint of bbq but at least gave the chicken flavor. The rice and peas had maybe 6 peas in my whole plate and barely had any color. Idk if they are trying to stretch the food bc of covid but I wouldn't try this place again. Sorry to write a bad review. read more

It's not as easy to find and it's next to a tire shop. I came here with my daughter and tried their version of Jamaican food. I ordered my food and didn't have to wait long, thats one thing I like. The owner/ manager seemed very passionate about his restaurant greeting everybody. However, I had the jerk and my daughter had the curry chicken and we both thought that the food was bland. The jerk and curry chicken wasn't cooked with enough seasoning that jerk is suppose to have. The curry needed more seasoning as well. read more

Saw the stars on yelp, I stopped by to get food to go. First, this place is hard to miss especially at night. It's next to a tire place so you will have to make a U-turn if you're coming from Fuqua. I ordered the curry chicken which comes with rice & red beans, and cabbage. I also ordered plantains with my meal. The curry chicken has spice but it seemed a bit salty to me. I don't know if it was made that way or because I don't salt my food, my taste buds may be off. The rice & beans and cabbage is typical Caribbean food. The plantains were good, they were my favorite. Don't let the outside of this building fool you . Some of the best food is found in hole in the walls. My family and I traveled to Houston for Father's Day weekend and were undecided on what to eat. I Googled best Jamaican places and this popped up as the best in Houston and she is not lying about that. The oxtails are hands down the best we have ever had ...tender and the gravy is sooo good. This place is amazing! I called in an order based solely off of a friend's recommendation. (Because I'll try anything at least once) It's off of the beaten path on S. Post Oak right next door to a tire shop....ok. I walk in an immediately notice how clean the place is. This is important to me. Now on to the food- which I got to-go. I noticed that my plate was overflowing in the bag because some of the gravy was leaking. As I'm driving home the smell is so delicious I want to pull over and take a bite (I don't), but I can't wait to get home. OMG- I open this container and I'm like "who is going to eat all of this"? I order the around the island sampler which includes 3 meat entrees of your choice: oxtail, brown stew chicken, and curry goat which was accompanied by peas and rice, cabbage, and fried plantains. The portion did not disappoint! Everything tasted fresh and was well seasoned. This food was so delicious, I ate until I couldn't. From my leftovers, I was able to make 2 additional plates - for lunch and dinner for the next day. Helen's kitchen has just made a brand new and faithful customer. Decided to try something different and we made a excellent choice. The place is nice and cozy just what I needed after the hustle and bustle of Valentine Day. If you are ever in the Hiram Clarke area it is a must try. The food is delicious and I normally critic other people cooking but I don't have one complaint. My family is from the Caribbean and I brought them here to try out the food. Mind you, they are harsh critics when it comes to Caribbean food. I was so happy when they stated Helen's was one of the best Jamaican food spots they've tasted while living here in the US. The beef patties were divine!
