Curried Goat, dumpling rolls, champagne soda
    Lisa J.

Here on a VERY hot Houston Saturday afternoon and was excited to get in some cold AC and a have a Jamaican champagne soda for starters at this very modest , but hipster vibes type dive at Helen's Kitchen. I ordered a large curry goat and my brother met me here and he ordered the large oxtails. When I'm visiting a Caribbean spot for the first time , these two staples are a must for me to try. That being said , I really enjoyed my rice and peas and the flavor and tenderness of my curry goat but I found it to be over cooked slightly as it was too many pieces already coming off the bone and was almost more of a gravy for the most part. My brother's oxtails were pretty tender as well , but were not as flavorful as my curry goat. Service was friendly and welcoming , however painfully slow.. So for these combined reasons I gave this and overall 3 stars.

Food has always been excellent I've never had a bad experience at Helen's kitchen. Staff is kind and service is 10/10. The inside definitely gives authentic Jamaican vibes. Better than cool runnings.

I am a huge fan of Jerk Chicken and oxtails. Anytime I'm able to try a new restaurant that serves Jerk Chicken and oxtails. I'm definitely gonna stop in. I am very glad that we stopped in and tried Helen's kitchen today. They're serving up some really good Jamaican cuisine and I'm a tell you what you will enjoy what they have to offer. Food: the oxtails were easily the best dish I had. Full of flavor, full of meat, just a top-notch dish for oxtails. That was a very flavorful tasty oxtail. Jerk Chicken was solid. it wasn't the best Jerk Chicken. It wasn't the worst Jerk Chicken. It was just a very solid Jerk Chicken. I would give the Jerk Chicken three or four stars out of five. Very tasty. Just the oxtails have were very special. I would definitely come back just for the oxtails. If you're a fan of oxtails stop by here ASAP. the customer service was great. We got three plates, and the food came out and a very timely matter. I will be back soon.

I ordered at the restaurant to go, it took maybe about 10-15 minutes for them to prepare the food. Once I got in the car I noticed that the container was leaking as you can see from the picture! But on the good side the plate was VERY FULL. I didn't want to waste all the precious gravy though. The cabbage was 10/10. There was plenty of rice, I wish the oxtail and curry were spicier but both tasted slightly above average good. My plate was supposed to come with plantain but I think they forgot it. So I give them a 3.8/5 for the leaking plate, forgetting the plantain and giving me a beef patty instead of the chicken patty I asked for.

Very spacious restaurant with several tables to dine in or order to go. A family restaurant. Service was okay. They were pretty busy when we came in and there wasn't any guidance given for first time customers. Ordered the garlic shrimp, jerk chicken, and the jerk ribs. All came with rice and peas, plantains, cabbage. The jerk sauce for the chicken is good and kinda spicy. Rice and peas And cabbage are also good. I had the garlic shrimp - they were deveined but the tails were still on. The garlic sauce itself was ok. The ribs were also cool too. Oh, how could I forget the beef patty. This go for this! Well seasoned beef. Truly hand made. Something to note: eitherThe price listed on the menu is if you pay in cash or there is a price increase and the menu changed. I went back to look at my receipt and each dish had a small 1-3% increase in cost and I paid with a card.

I just so happened to be on the south side with this cup of hot chocolate and her 3 kids. They mine too but we not here for those details. Anyways, we were starving like we just left black church and the reviews on this spot were talking that talk. Walking in I could tell it was early so there was no line just like I like it. The scene was giving you're in a low key sketch part of town so you know the food about to hit. The lady taking my order was nice which is always a plus when ordering food for a first time somewhere. Portions? You ever had a grandma? She ever fixed your plate? That's all I gotta say about that. Highly recommend! Highly Enjoyable! Will be back!

    Plenty of seating!

Talk about delicious Jamaican food, very flavorful. I had the brown chicken stew, peas n rice and plantains... I normally don't even eat plantain, but this was so good and it paired so well with this food. I also had a ting to drink which is Jamaica's version of a Sprite I think :-)

So we made the drive here on a Saturday in the Texas heat to check it out. Pulling up here, it's got the island themes with the Jamaican flags, island memorabilia, and afro-beats music blaring from the inside; felt like we were visiting one of the Caribbean restaurants on the islands. We placed an order for the jerk chicken eggrolls, the jamaican beef pattie, a jerk chicken platter w/ rice & peas & curry veggies, and a brown-stewed chicken with steamed cabbage and mac & cheese. About 9-10 minutes later, they called us for our food and we dug in. Everything was absolutely bursting with flavors and island spices. The jerk chicken eggrolls, both entrees, and the cabbage & curried veggies sides are definite must-orders. The chicken in all of those dishes are super tender and melt in your mouth with the spices and sauce. The Jamaican pattie is pretty good although it's the same that I've had at other spots. The rice & peas is a pretty big portion and you can taste the thyme and other spices in it. I didn't care for the mac & cheese but my fiance loved it; wasn't blown away by it. All the seating is outdoors with minimal indoor high seats so it may be best to get it to go. The beverages are island drinks such as the ocean wata (blueberry lemonade) and the Ting (grapefruit soda) which are popular island staples at the convenience stores. They pair great with whatever eats you're ordering. Other food items here that I need to try is the red snapper, the oxtail cheesesteak, and the curry goat. We'll definitely be back to try those! They also do catering as well so that may be another option we'll consider!

Very consistent and thankfully all dark meat pieces. The collard greens were refreshing, earthy and had a unique, buttery aroma to them. They weren't bitter like some recipes in other places. I ended up getting a beef patty and jerk wings which were too tough, I could hardly chew them. I also ordered some Collard greens which were just okay. I overheard a phone order that they were processing where the person asked for red snapper fish, they were out of that. The only fish they had available was salmon. But if you take a look at their extensive menu you would see they offer many different types of fish. And lastly, we arrived at the rice and peas (which my husband calls them being stingy on the serving size). The amount of rice given is the smallest serving size of rice and peas I've ever seen served in a Caribbean restaurant. It's not nearly enough to go alongside the rest of the food. Be prepared if you order to go, you'll probably need to order a side of rice in addition to what they give you. The service is good, it's always good, they are friendly and helpful, but it doesn't make up for what they lack in food.

Of course I was happy to indulge her request as it gave me an opportunity to try some handheld eats. First the beef pattie, pretty big and so savory with the meat melting in your mouth and the dough having a nice texture and crust. And then the saheena; OMG! It was my first time having this lovely pastry which is made of chickpeas, spinach, and caribbean spices. You'll be hooked on this after one bite. Texture was similar to a savory piece of cornbread. Of course I was very happy with this item. The girlfriend ordered a currant roll which had some sweetness to it with a flaky crust. I enjoyed it but not as much as I was scarfing down my beef pattie and saheena. They also serve traditional caribbean eats including jerk chicken, oxtails, bake & saltfish, and roti wraps. We noticed a lot of people place to go orders here and call ahead for pick up. There were several bags of eats waiting as we witnessed people roll in and pick them up while having small talk with the owners. All those items looked delicious and we plan to come back and try those out. We also talked to the owners for a bit, they're a husband/wife team who've owned/operated this place for a while. Super polite and gracious, they helped me navigate the menu and explained what the items would be like when I ordered. Sadly I could not get the Aloo Pie (sold out) but they assured me it's worth having and to come back and try it (which we will). Pearland is lucky to have this place here. I asked for spicy on the doubles but they didn't taste too spicy - instead I used the sauce included on my bake n fish (possibly had some scotch bonnet peppers) and it was excellent.
