I have been here many times and have always had a great experience. It's been many years since I've been and it was not as good as I remembered. Family of 4 adults. Spanakopita and cheese pie apps delicious. The baked cheese not very good. 2 Gyros thumbs up and daughters chicken dish was good. I had lamb over rice. The lamb was so overcooked and dry it was barely edible. They should know better than to serve over cooked lamb. It kind of feels like they're just on auto pilot and not putting in too much effort. Three of us stopped by here for breakfast on the way back from the ferry. We had eggs, corned beef, home fries, bacon and toast. The eggs were small, the bacon was ok. No one cares for the corned beef. The hash browns were tasty but greasy. We would probably never stop by again. read more

This is one of my favorite places in the east end. They have the best Greek salads and whole fish entrees. Some people are turned off to whole because of the bones. It took me awhile to get used to it but is totally worth it. The fish is moist and favorable, but you have to love garlic it is loaded with it. I NEVER write reviews but this place is so spectacular that I can't stop thinking about it. Went with my cousins this past week and everything was authentic and simply delicious. And the staff were lovely and endearing. The octopus was the best I've ever had. The tiropitakia was mouth watering, the horiatiki salad PERFECTLY SEASONED, and they had a simple asparagus appetizer that my cousin wanted (I'm not usually a fan) that was SO DELICIOUS I now like asparagus. Hellenic is literally life changing ; ). And the whole fish (bass, they had multiple options) was yum!! And we even ordered dessert (no I didn't eat again that night) which was ALSO incredible (baklava and Galaktoboureko). By the way, my cousin and I spent 2 weeks in Greece in 2019 and fell in love with the country, the people, and the food, so...we know what we're talking about ! Menus brought. Order taken. Pretty busy but never neglected. Broiled octopus was good but needed more umpf. Capers and lemon maybe. A bit or oregano. Anyway it was presented nicely with sliced cucumbers, olives and bread. Grilled pita bread is outstanding. Tzatziki is good too. Avgolemeno is tasty but slightly gelatinous. The starch from the orzo is overwhelming and the bowl is half full. Horiatiki salad with gyro meat was delicious and big enough for two to share. Finishing with baklava and Greek coffee. I came here last night for a take out on my way home from Connecticut. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. I got grape leaves an appetizer, a gyro and multiple orders of baklava for friends at work to snack on today. All of the food wasn't just good, it was superb. This review is solely based on a takeout experience. The process of ordering food for takeout from start to finish was wonderful! I called in an order for 7 people on a summer Friday evening. Hellenic Snackbar got all of the orders correct, and had the food ready for pickup in only 20 minutes! The quality of food was incredible. I LOVE that they have gluten free pitas! The pita was both soft and crunchy, everything that a pita should be. Most of the other girls in the group ordered falafel and it was an absolute hit! This restaurant has been around since the 70s, and I've been going here since I was a kid in the early 90s. My cousins and I used to come here with our grandparents when they were alive and lived in Southold. We reunited in Greenport this summer, and had a fantastic dinner at the Hellenic Snackbar. Or should I say, we had a fantastic appetizer feast: the appetizers are the stars of the show here, with the standouts being the skordalia (garlic sauce) with beets, the saganaki with tomatoes (I literally grabbed a waiter's arm to prevent him from taking the plate away because one extra tomato was in it and I wanted to eat it . . . oops), grape leaves, and the tzatziki. They also make phenomenal homemade lemonade. Oh, the tzatziki. It's the star of the show. It's the gold standard by which all other tzatziki is to be measured. The day after we had Hellenic snack bar for dinner - I kid you not - we stopped in again on our way out of town for a last meal. And, no joke, EACH ordered a plate of tzatziki and a lemonade. And it was glorious! The menu is vegetarian and vegan friendly, and good for people who are gluten sensitive (or who have celiac, like my sister). They have gluten free pita bread! There's an upcharge of $2.50 for each order of the gluten free pita, but it tasted great even to me as a gluten-eater. And it's called a snack bar because that was it's roots; Hellenic is now a full-service sit-down restaurant. Stick to the appetizers and salads and you definitely won't be disappointed! read more

We have been going to this restaurant about two or three times a year, for the past 20+ years. The location is great and the service is good. We typically go for the beef gyros and chicken souvlaki. The atmosphere is very nice with a choice of indoor and outdoor seating (depending on weather). If you are coming from the ferry, this is a worthwhile stop to make! read more

Visiting LI for the first time and drove out to Orient State Park. Just saw you guys sitting on the side of the road on the way to find the lighthouse. What a surprising gem! Let me start by saying I am an absolute Greek food fanatic! This place was interesting. We went for lunch during a rainy week day in September and they had a nice crowd. We had the cheese appetizer with pita which was absolutely delicious. For lunch, I ordered the traditional gyro. It was tasty and well done, but for the price seemed scarce. It could've used a side like a nice Greek salad or French fries or some option. The prices are expensive for what you're getting. The service was slow and not too friendly. Ahhhhmazing! They have gluten free options! And lots of them! The gluten free pita and tzatziki is so yummy! They can make almost anything gluten free there! And the menu is clearly marked! But the food is seriously good! And I came with my pooch and they were totally accommodating. Liz brought him a take out tin and a bottle of water. George: Sounds like someone got up on the wrong side of the pita! I found the tone of your response to be both puzzling and unwarranted. That you took my review as a "threat tactic" is equally confounding. I didn't say that I would never return, just that I would wait until the staff either masked up or Covid was under control. A little thin-skinned on your part. The fact that you accept your staff's "assurance" that they have been vaccinated is commendable (I guess) but without them providing proof of vaxx , it is hardly reassuring to a Covid-weary public. Even if they were fully immunized,I hope that you are aware that even vaxxed people can spread the new variant. Do the laws of science stop at Hellenic's door?? I also didn't realize that it was up to the customers to enforce common sense actions in the face of the Delta surge. I've found very few stores/restaurants in the Long Island area where workers have NOT gone back to masks, regardless of a government mandate. Lastly, I had mentioned from the beginning that I was a long time diner at Hellenic AND, in fact, said that it was one of the very few restaurants I've still been going to during the pandemic. A gracious owner would have had the "decency" to acknowledge that and express gratitude. A word of friendly advice, George: take your eyes off of the "stars" and spend a little more attention on what's happening here on Earth. We went to lunch on 7/5 & shared the small plate 5 option appetizer and it was delicious. Hands down probably the best greek food I've had in quite some time. I ordered the homemade lemonade, wow was that amazing too! The only issue was the service was slow but other than that, would highly recommend. read more

I think this restaurant is a staple of north fork. My parents have been coming here every so often since the early 80s and I have fond memories of eating here many times as a child. We ordered for takeout this past weekend during our vacation and of course everything was delicious. read more

I took my mother and aunt there last week for lunch. The staff is friendly and cheerful which made the dining experience pleasant but the food was nothing to boast about. It lives up to the name snack bar. We ordered 3 souvlaki sandwiches, the same portion, quality and presentation as a souvlaki cart in Astoria with 2 sodas over $50! I can understand how eating Greek in Greenport can be a novelty to most but this was insulting. The souvlaki was probably purchased in bulk at a restaurant supply center vs hand selected trimmed larger portions of chicken or pork. Probably kept in a warming tray and reheated on the grill. Just the way street vendors do. The tsadziki sauce was watery but the tomatoes were fresh and added a nice zest to the sandwich as were the onions. How can they not be fresh since the farm source is only a few hundred yards away. How can I be so harsh you may ask? I was a frequent customer for years when they opened and had a string of cabins on the property. The food has done a 180 turn. Forget the excessive wine and beer list there are plenty of places in the village for that. Focus on good food! This may be the first place or last place to pull in, depending if you're heading to or from the cross sound ferry at Orient Point, for food because of the convenient location. I have gotten takeout and the staff were friendly and the order was prepared in a very reasonable amount of time. I also really appreciated the clear descriptions of the ingredients and the staffs' helpfulness in checking for certain allergens with the chef. I was so sad to see that they're closed in the winter. Let me preface my review by saying: I just had the best dalmata (stuffed grape leaf) of my life! Our adventure out east was started a bit hastily as we forgot to eat before we left. Trying to fit everything in we realized it was needed we stop and at that very moment I passed the Greek spot I always wanted to try. I looped back, parked, and walked around the front. Greeted immediately I asked what type of tree we had just walked under and learned it was a black walnut (how interesting, I have no idea what that is) walking over to pick our table. Outdoor seating is great this time of year so it was an obvious decision. This was the ONLY easy decision I made at the Hellenic. Everything sounded so great, I enjoyed my lemon soup (not my girlfriends cup of tea) We got the beets and skordalia which were great (come to think of it, quite basic though) A risotto or orzo with jumbo shrimp which was really great and fresh And holy hell the grape leaf- I like grape leaves.. You know, they are what they are, some slimier than others but usually pretty standard. NO! This grape leaf was two times the size of your average grape leaf and twenty times as good. Super fresh! Super good! And not at all wet or slimey. Perfect! I must also say that I've been on a long hunt for great skordalia and this quenched my need, still not the absolute best I've been searching for, but definitely up there. Super garlicky and delicious, loved it! If they made it a tiny bit "puffier" and lighter somehow, I'd want to be buried with the stuff. Service was good and friendly. Not too many people there and it was a nice day. My only complaint is price. The two of us split one entree and the appetizer sampler, the entree came with the soup, and I ordered 1 grape leaf a la cart .... All that was 80-100 bux - that's a little ridiculous considering we didn't even have a 2nd actual dish. We didn't leave hungry but that's not the point- Don't get the calamari if you're thinking its Gnna be your average fried calamari, it had a crispness but it was almost like, that steamed white sort; if that's your thing, dive in! (I liked it in the skordalia, but what wouldn't be good in this awesome skordalia) I forgot to mention that I've had their baklava, and while the flavors and textures were good, I myself couldn't bare the sweetness, it was drenched in the vanilla syrup and I thought my teeth were falling out. Still a bite is quite nice. All in all I'd go and order again, I'd just have to fight with my wallet a while. read more

I literally haven't been here since my aunt picked me up as a 12 year old from the Orient Point ferry. Needless to say I had the palate of a 12 year old, and didn't appreciate what the restaurant had to offer. I came here on a Friday night late summer with my mom and enjoyed it immensely. We sat outside, a glass of wine in hand. I had the beef gyro and my mom had the croquettes as well as the spanakopita appetizer. We loved them both. Surprised that the place was a little empty at 7 but by the time we left at 8 - it was packing up. Great outdoor space and looking forward to my next time in to explore the menu more. Had lunch here for the first time. We had the "3 choice appetizer" of fried cauliflower, stuffed grape leaves and fried eggplant/zucchini with garlic sauce/hummus...and it was perfect! But my entree of beef gyro platter was not very good. The bread tasted stale...the onions had a funky taste (maybe pickled)...too much rice...but the meat was pretty tasty...and the tzatziki sauce was good.The place had a barn kind of smell, which is usually from dirty carpet, but there isn't any carpet in the place. Maybe they need to replace the floor runners? No ambiance, but good service. A "one and done" for me. read more

Was pretty disappointed with the food here given how good the reviews for this place were. We ordered a bunch of the appetizers and had a tapas-style meal. We got the cheese filo dough pastries-the stuffing was not super flavorful and the filo dough itself was pretty bland which was to be expected. The cauliflower croquettes were tastier but I wished they were crispier. The feta sauce the croquettes came with was really tasty, I asked for a second helping of that and slathered it on everything. The spanakopita was alrite and the grilled pita with squash and zucchini was one of the better dishes as they had a yummy garlic sauce on top of everything. read more

Honestly, I was very disappointed in this place. The restaurant had potential that aged poorly, if at all. The food came out cold, the burger was lackluster in flavor, the fries were soggy, the bun wet, and the entire combo was not worth the $20 price tag it commanded. My wife and I have been dining at The Hellenic for many years. And I have to say the food still continues to impress us each time. And tonight was absolutely no different whatsoever. Valentine's Day 2022 and we took the trek out to our favorite Greek.......well favorite restaurant period!! We decided to mix it up with a few of our favorite staples.......saganaki, avgolemono soup and the infamous Hellenic Greek Salad.......and the Valentine's Day specials. I had the Slow-Smoked Lamb Tenderloin and my wife had the Grilled Vegetable Napolean. And OMG i have never had such an amazing Lamb Dish ever. The taste was phenomenal, the seasoning was spot on and the tenderness was pure perfection. My wife didn't say much during our meal except to rave about how incredible her dinner was. So thanks a lot. We had a great meal but you completely ruined our Valentine's Day dinner. We were too damn busy enjoying the meal and didn't say a single loving thing to each other!! Great! Thanks!! Well, I guess we will just have to end this Valentine's Day evening knowing that we absolutely do LOVE something.......the Hellenic and the incredible dishes that are served each and every time we go there!!! I am a huge greek food fan and was looking for a good greek restaurant when visiting Long Island. We decided on Hellenic and couldn't have been happier. We enjoyed the calamari and octopus, and I had a gyro. My food was a bit cold but it was noted to get sauce on side (which i did not do) to keep warm. Always love the food! My only complaint is that the prices went up SO much. A baby greek salad with gyro meat and side Tzatziki was $25! and they didn't give me any pita. That is a lot of money for the smallest salad on the menu. I know prices all over the North Fork have gone up due to the population and demand, but that was ridiculous. Come at night and sit by a fire! Service was very good here and apparently I'm becoming increasingly picky about service in my old age. Clearly the owners make it a priority to well train the staff and they have plenty of people on deck so each can provide proper service to their tables. We had the option of 5 appetizers for $22- a steal if you ask me! I've been going to Hellenic since childhood, which is a few decades, and have always loved their gyros and awesome tzatziki sauce. Recently, a coworker recommended them for Sunday brunch. My fiancé and I went and it was fantastic! We've been back for Sunday brunch many times since. I love George's favorite, which is an omelet with spinach, Swiss and feta, along with other tasty ingredients. The staff is always friendly and we always feel welcome there.
