Held a dinner here during our recent sales meeting. William (owner) was very helpful organizing the event and had excellent follow-up. Upon arrival, we were greeted and seated immediately. The atmosphere is terrific, noise level is ideal for conversation, even with a larger group, and the wait staff was very professional and accommodating. Food was amazing, everything we fresh and delicious. I think we ordered almost everything on the menu! Appetizers, salad, soup, entrees and even dessert. Wow. My friend and I were visiting Richmond and wanted some lighter food before we left to catch our train, and we were excited to see Henley on Grace online. The interior alone of this place is so well-done -- beautiful -- and the food was delicious. Excellent service. We were also introduced to William, the GM, who was very kind and fun. I had the 314 salad (very fresh) and a bread basket to myself (full of croissants, scones, biscuits and mini muffins). My friend had the veggie sandwich and added chicken (very fresh and tasty). We definitely plan to visit Henley again when we are back in town. read more

Can't speak on brunch but the dinner menu knocks it out of the park! After two visits we can 100% recommend the chicken, tuna, salmon, hanger steak, and seafood pasta. Let me start by saying that if you haven't been to Henley on Grace, you need to get yourself there as soon as possible. I have been to Henley on Grace three or four times at this point, since Valentines Day. Every visit is a new experience. For one, the food is on point - each and every time. Second, the wine list is extensive and expertly chosen. Third, the owner, William, is a riot. You'll always see William moving about and chatting with visitors. If he doesn't greet you at the door, he'll soon greet you at your table. As I said, every visit has been a new experience. This is one of the best up and coming restaurants in Richmond. My boyfriend was able to score a last minute Valentine's Day reservation at this place. They were serving a small, pre established menu I guess to accommodate the large Valentine's Day crowd. When we arrived for our reservation we still had to wait about 20 minutes which kind of turned me off but I understood due to the holiday. I had the salad as my appetizer, and crab stuffed salmon as my entree, it came with rice and spinach. For dessert I tried the tiramisu and honestly I've had better at Olive Garden. Overall it was decent but we were still a little hungry when we left most likely due to the kitchen trying to ration portions to meet demand. I would love to return and try some items from the regular, more extensive menu. read more

In town for just a few days, we wanted to have a meal that made us say when we got home, 'We went to this great place in Richmond...' And we found it! William wasted no time making us feel welcome, and later in the night (when he had a lot less time to spare) he still made time to make sure we had the right wine in our glasses (we did, thank you!). If we could have gotten sparkling water to start and espresso at the end of the night we would have left 6 stars. But the rest of the experience was so great it made those gaps easy to forgive. As promised, the food was scrumptious but not heavy or laborious--exactly what we were hoping for. I had the salmon and every component on my plate was in perfect proportion: flavor, texture, quantity, harmony. My husband had the scallops and was impressed which is a huge compliment, considering we buy our scallops off the boat back at home on Cape Cod. The ambiance is lovely, with a variety of textures surrounding you, from the copper ceiling, the brick walls, and the wide plank wood tables. Yum for all the senses. read more

Ate there early on a Saturday night. My husband and I each got the smoked salmon appetizer which was delicious. I was impressed that when I told the server I liked dry white wine, he suggested the least expensive glass because he said it was their dryest white. We both had salads with grilled chicken added. His was the forager and very large with good vegetables. Mine was the 314 and much smaller. Our server was almost too attentive at the start and much less once the place got busier to the point where we were surprised to have to wait so long for the check. We weren't in any hurry so it wasn't a problem, just a little surprising. The biggest surprise was that they didn't have a pepper ginder. The server said he "couldn't talk the manager into buying one." That seemed crazy for this kind of restaurant. All in all, we very much enjoyed our meal and would recommend it. read more

Superb all around! The food was delicious and drinks divine! My husband and I had been looking forward to trying this place and it did not disappoint. I don't know. This place was a surprise to say the least. We walked in on a Thursday and they were booked, but they found a cancellation 45 min later and suggested we have drinks at the bar, so we did. The gentleman seating everyone was extremely kind and hospitable. We were able to be seated in 30 minutes. Everything is a touch above the rest in quality. The decor, the table settings, the chairs, glasses. Everything was just, nice. We ordered our food and it came relatively fast. I do not recall what we ordered but I remember taking a bite and we both stopped. I looked at my wife and said "wait, so the wealthy just enjoy better flavors? This is how rich people eat ALL THE TIME?!". It was the best food I may have ever eaten in my life. The environment was perfect. The people and the volume and the staff. We tried Henley on Grace Sunday night and it was fantastic. The service was Devine! We had three different wines - all great. I would highly recommend the Seared Tuna which had a perfect sauce. The duck breast was cooked amazingly well and had great accompaniments. We didn't get to eat dessert but the table behind us did and they looked fantastic. Food was great, but the owner was really critical of his staff for making a mistake. As someone in the service industry, this rubbed me the wrong way, she apologized profusely for the mistake and took it off the bill. The owner followed us out of the restaurant and criticized his staff to us, I personally thought that a conversation like that should be between a manager and an employee and not a customer. Like I said the food was great, and the service was also excellent, mistakes happen, but the managers response was odd. read more

Our third visit to Henley on Grace (HOG). Tonight, an early reservation before a show within easy walking distance to the venue. We had no challenges finding nearby on-street, parallel metered parking, along with the inviting entry featuring branded awning, sidewalk tables, and open windows. The interior is updated with exposed brick, rich colors, and contemporary art for a cozy, modern ambiance and inviting aesthetic. We requested the full-service bar with comfortable backed stools and ordered a couple of handcrafted cocktails that were opulent and balanced. Unfortunately, we do not recall ambient music to review. Fresh-baked soft bread, extra virgin olive oil infused with aromatic herbs, and soft butter were soon presented. Wine is the restaurant's focus, with diverse choices from reasonably priced house to more elegant and elevated wines by the glass or bottle. The knowledgeable, relaxed bartender made excellent suggestions to exceed our inclinations. It is comforting when you can depend on professionals to offer superb recommendations. An accessible wine attribute is that they open any wine if you oblige to two glasses from the bottle. Wines were poured generously, delighted the senses, complimented the food, and were savored! Our first course was the Smoked Salmon Crostini, composed of layers of fantastic flavor, freshness, and texture. For entrees, we thoroughly enjoyed both the California-Asian-inspired Ahi Tuna and Wine Country Scallops. The giant sea scallops were among the best I have ever relished. Perfect size, cooking, seasoning, freshness, and setup. The salmon, tuna, and scallops are unmissable. Laudable portions served at the proper temperature, satisfying, stimulating, layered, multifaceted, rich, flavor profiles were bright tasting, not heavy or palate fatiguing, and in a word, delectable. The service was attentive, warm, welcoming, with unobtrusive delivery throughout the visit. In addition, William, the owner, has authentic, engaging dialogues with guests in the absolute best old-world style of hospitality. Three reliably enjoyable meals in, HOG has moved towards the top of our favorites and is a must repeat destination. They are offering lunch, brunch, or dinner most days except for closed Monday. It's hard to believe this restaurant has only been open for a month. The wait staff was very attentive (Tara, we loved meeting you!) And the wine list was quite extensive Mu husband had the vegetarian Portabella mushroom entre and found it very diverse in flavor. The cook staff was very obliging to my Alpha Gal allergy and prepared my fish separately from all other mammalian meats. Definitely a place we will go to again. Very mediocre experience. Drinks: For a place the bills itself as a California-style wine bar, this was a real miss. The wine list is very pedestrian. You have to commit to two glasses if you want to get some thing by the glass. They don't have separate red and white wine glasses. The staff is not particularly knowledgeable about the offerings. Beyond the wine, the bar is poorly stocked, and there is almost no beer selection. Food: The proteins were all cooked well, no complaints there. But, the accompaniments were nearly inedible on all of our dishes. The worst, by far, were the rice noodles under the tuna, which were flavorless and broken to pieces. Also, the appetizer listed as "chips" (in quotations) is actually potato chips, which was unexpected (we were expecting British chips) and unnecessarily confusing. read more

we had a wonderful meal last night, thankful we made the trip downtown, HOG is our favorite new downtown restaurant plus broad wine selection. for apps we had meatballs and smoked salmon appetizers, then duck and seafood pasta entrées, all delicious and prompt. the wine selection is comprehensive (100's?), all offered by the bottle AND by the glass, we paired a glass with each course and tasted wines that you typically would have to buy an expensive bottle for, we had a great experience, the staff was very friendly and warm, the restaurant was very clean, can't wait to come back. read more

It came to our attention as a wine bistro so we stopped in for a glass after a movie. The decor and the ambiance were welcoming but the surprise was when they handed us the menus. We expected it to be similar to a tapas bar with small bites to go along with the wine, but they have a very good menu. We ordered our wine and William, the proprietor, brought us what he considered to be an upgrade. It was perfect. Having already eaten we didn't partake of dinner, but I did have a salad which was perfect. In speaking with the owner it was mentioned that it was my wife's birthday. Shortly thereafter out came a plate with some strawberries and Happy Birthday written on it. We returned for dinner and it did not disappoint. My wife had a delicious burger that was large, juicy and perfectly cooked. I started with the soup of the day, which was a wild mushroom soup that was heavenly and then enjoyed the chicken with prosciutto and Artichoke hearts which was superb. We went back and brought friends last night. Again, I couldn't resist the soup which was chicken and wild rice. For the main course I had the duck paired with a Lebanese vintage with notes of currants and blackberries. My table mates had the hanger steak, the tuna, and the seafood pasta. While I finished with a New York cheesecake and a wonderful port, the others had a lemon cake that was fabulous. One of my friends commented on the lighting, decor, and in particular the music. It was a good selection and just the right volume. It didn't encroach on the conversation but added to the ambiance. William is an excellent host. Next up is returning for lunch! Dinner here before the Virginia Opéra was a real treat. It is officially a wine bar and they have a great selection with domestic and international wines well represented. The food was classic bistro fare very well done. There were plenty of things to choose from, so should appeal to broad tastes. I got the duck which was perfectly cooked.
