This restaurant holds a lot of nostalgia for me. When I lived in the area years ago, I ordered from here regularly because the food was always fresh, flavorful, and consistently delicious. Recently, after nearly 10 years, I was back in the area visiting friends and suggested we order from there. I was excited to revisit my longtime favorite speciality, the chicken lo mein. What I remembered was a dish with a light, delicious sauce that perfectly blended Caribbean and Chinese flavors, with generous portions of tender, melt-in-your-mouth chicken. Unfortunately, the meal I received was nothing like I remembered. The lo mein contained small, hard pieces of chicken, the noodles were overcooked, and that signature sauce was nowhere to be found. Instead, the dish was extremely dry and tasted almost entirely of soy sauce. It was so unappetizing that I couldn't eat it and ended up throwing it away. It's disappointing to see so many restaurants raising prices while portions shrink and quality declines. What made this experience especially sad was realizing that the cherished memory I had of Henrica's lo mein has been completely overshadowed by this visit. I think this can improve with having chefs who create this fusion and love doing it! A favorite taste from my teenage years is now, unfortunately, just a memory. Henrica's Resturant never disappoints when it comes to the food and drinks. My friend and I ordered the same entree which was Escovich style wings with Henrica's Fried Rice (my favorite), our meal was paired with the classic Rum Punch. The food was nice and hot when it was served. The Esco wings were so flavorful with all the onions pimentos seeds and of course peppers, loved it! I'm through giving "benefit of doubt" and "grace". I will NEVER return to this place. Absolutely unacceptable. One of the worst Jamaican food experiences I've ever had. I ordered pepper steak with rice and peas from Henrica's, and from the moment I opened the container, it was a red flag. The "pepper steak" was battered in flour--which is already questionable--and when I took the first bite, the steak was clearly undercooked and raw inside. It was disgusting and completely inedible. I stopped eating immediately. The rice and peas was just as bad. Bland, dry, and missing the most basic elements of what rice and peas is supposed to be. There was no coconut flavor and barely any peas at all. It honestly looked like plain white rice with a few peas sprinkled in as an afterthought. This meal was not edible, period. I called the restaurant right away to report the issue and was told I'd have to bring the food back in person for them to "review it" and then they would issue a store credit. Why would I want a store credit from a Jamaican restaurant that can't properly cook pepper steak or rice and peas, two absolute staples? The meal was only $10.59, so the pushback made no sense--especially when they expected me to drive back out of my way just to prove their food was poorly cooked. The lunch special also came with a so-called "juice." It tasted like straight white sugar water--no real flavor at all, just a red tint from who knows what. Completely artificial and unpleasant. Between the bad food, poor customer service, and the lack of accountability, I truly don't understand how this place is still in business. As a fellow Jamaican, this was especially disappointing. This type of food does not represent our culture or our cuisine. 0/10. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Save your money and your time. Run the other way. This place has been around for years, I've always ordered here but never actually been. I've ordered the jerk pork and chicken pasta. It was so good I mean absolutely delicious. This meal was so big it can feed two. I was greeted with amazing service by our waiter. She attended to us the entire time. I would say they can use a refresh with there interior. It does seem a little outdated I feel. But overall this place has been a 10 out of 10 definitely recommend. I will be coming back here for sure. After being away for years (I honestly can't remember the last time I was there), I recently went back to Henrica's for a milestone birthday party. Even the bartender was nice, though the drink selection was a bit limited. Now for the disappointment: the food. I ordered the curry shrimp with rice and peas, which wasn't part of the catered menu, so I had to order it separately from their regular menu and pay for it out of pocket. When it came out, everything was served separately, rice, veggies, and shrimp. The shrimp was lukewarm. Luckily, the server was super nice about it and took it back right away, bringing me a new dish (hopefully freshly made, though I'm not totally sure). Unfortunately, the food didn't get much better. The rice and veggies were just okay, nothing special. The curry sauce was watery, bland, and way too spicy without much flavor. The shrimp were soggy, and honestly, I started wondering if I was given the spicy shrimp instead of the curry by mistake. The veggies that came with the shrimp were probably the best part, not great, but at least they had a bit of crunch. Was invited by a family member to this spot for drinks and appetizers. Easy to get to. It is close to Belt Parkway. LIRR Is also a short walk from this place. There is street parking as well as meter parking. It was a Wednesday afternoon so it wasn't crowded. But the pepper shrimp were delicious. I've been coming to this restaurant for a few years now and when I say the service has gone downhill, it's no exaggeration. I take pride in supporting Black-owned business, but this restaurant is a clear example of why folks turn their backs. I placed an order at 4:30 and was told the food will be ready in 30 minutes. I arrived promptly at 5:00 and guess what? Food wasn't ready. I understand things happen, so I extended some grace. Despite telling the woman at the counter my name twice upon arrival, she took it upon herself to keep asking me the name on the order. Other customers ahead of me had the same problem. It took an additional 30 minutes for them to have my order ready. Upon checkout, there was no apology for the long wait or anything done to try and rectify the situation. Mind you, this is not the first, second, or third time this has happened to me. While the food was good, there are other Jamaican restaurants in the neighborhood with better tasting food without the ridiculous wait times. It seems as if this is standard protocol for the restaurant--based on personal experience and other reviews--so I'll take my business elsewhere. But I was here recently with my mom and niece and had to do a review. My mom loves this place. The food never disappoints. The staff is always nice and there's a live DJ sometimes. Placed an order 3 days in advance from the catering menu for a small pan of jerk wings to take to a BBQ. The order required a down payment, which I provided by credit card and I paid the rest at pick up. The wings were a hit! They were delicious as always. I appreciated the consistency in the taste of their jerk sauce, how well & seasoned the wings were cooked and how FRESH the wings were. The small pan came with jerk sauce on the side. I've only been here for lunch but it's always been a win. They have great lunch special deals, with a variety of Jamaican and Chinese options. The food here is always great, good price and portion size. It isn't usually full during lunch time so you can sit right away. The jerk sauce that comes with the jerk chicken or pork is pretty spicy and tasty. The curry goat was also pretty good in that there was not too many bones in it. The only thing they can work on is having other options for the soup. I went twice and they only had beef soup as an option to accompany their lunch special. Some friends & I went to Henrica's the other day after driving out & finding that our favorite Jamaican spot was closed. I had never been to Henrica's before. I was pleasantly surprised. The ambiance is meh but our server was attentive and communicative. Best of all, my food was delicious. Starting with the sorrel, which for me sometimes isn't sweet or intense enough, but here was the perfect balance for me. For my entree, I had the whiting appetizer with escovitch and sides of rice and peas & plantain. All very very delicious. This place is a hit and miss. I only order from her Monday -Thursday because that's the only time they'll get my phone order correct as well as giving me food to match the prices. During the week when I order oxtails with rice and peas order is correct and I actually get pieces of oxtails and not just gravy and bones. The Ox Tail & Curry Goat combo is $22 but it was mostly BONES! I kidd you not, every piece of meat I picked up was Bones. I also ordered one (to-go) in advance, and I'm sorry I did, as my to-go order was worse than my plated food - Mostly Rice - NO Meat! There's a 24-hour Jamacian Restaurant in Harlem around 138th Street (King Barka) that, you'll wait an hour on line even at 1 a.m. but for the same $22 Ox Tail plate, you'll get a plate two can eat from with Mac & Cheese! Love this place. I've been here at least 100x since I work in the area. And it never disappoints. Whether you wanna hang by the bar for a drink, stop in for lunch during the day, or even dinner with the family, you can count on this place. They even have a comedy night with some very good comedians and other times musicians that come and play. The menu has a ton of options. Whether your in the mood for Jamaican, again fusion, pasta dishes, whatever you are looking for they can make it and the taste and flavors are usually on point. Very friendly and courteous staff. They really try to make you happy. And from time to time you can even catch the owner hanging out or walking around checking in on people. This place really is a gem. Totally love it. My friend and I enjoyed a band here a few weeks prior to this visit. When we found out it was a weekly thing, cover-band lovers we are we vowed to return. We came back on a Saturday but to our disappointment, the band/lady only performs on a Friday. After a drink at the bar we enquired about food and was informed the kitchen closes at midnight. It was way before that and others were still dining so we decided to have a bite. Selections of curried shrimp and jerk chicken which came with soup or salads were made. After snapping a pic or two (yelp comes first and all that jazz) I took two forks of my salad before I realized our nonchalant waiter was standing at our booth with what appeared to be our entrees. I was a bit taken aback, we hadn't even properly started our salads as yet. I shrugged and cleared the table for him to put our food down. Mind you, I had ordered curry....cold curry no good. I felt rushed. I started eating my salad quickly even though my friend insisted there is no rush......but.... I had curry. When I was finished with my salad and started on my curry to my dismay but expectations, my food was cold. So cold that the curry sauce already had a thin film of curdle. Now I ain't no cook but I know reheated curry when I see/taste it. Around this time we noticed the romantically low lights started flickering. It got intensely bright, then low again then bright, then low. Staff at this time started walking around clearing chairs and tables away and the place morphed into a huge empty space except for the booths, one of which we occupied. We were in the middle of chatting, hadn't even closed off our plates yet when Mr. Waiter, (who obviously doesn't know how a plate and utensils are closed off ) came over and asked/stated "finished", I looked at my plate, looked at him, looked at my friend looked at my plate, then looked at him again and said okay, if you say so." Sidenote: I apologize if I came across rude Mr. Waiter but you started it. There was no panache with his service, no order, no smile, nothing but an air of "why are you here to dine? Well..I think I like this place! There is a running joke about Carribean shop women, dem face ahhlweez luk turn up ahn stink. No, the staff here were not bubbling over in joy but they were pleasant in their own way. The main thing is I really enjoyed the food. My girlfriend and I opted for the buffet instead of ordering from the menu. We wanted to taste almost everything Henrica's had to offer. All of the items I sampled were flavorful and forced my belly to make room given it was "all you can eat" on a Sunday. There was a huge variety of dishes on the buffet menu from salad, curried shrimp, curried goat, fried fish, king fish, fried rice, rice and peas, rasta pasta, corn meal porridge, chicken and dumpling soup, chocolate and red velvet, and a cold glass of pink lemonade. It's a short timeframe but who needs more than three hours to down approximately 4.5 drinks? I don't & neither should you. This spot offers a nice Caribbean vibe from the bartenders, music, food, & drinks. Some nights there's a live band. Dining in is always nice because it feels like your on a vacation enjoying really delicious food. It's inexpensive & the portions are on the large side. I recommend the Rum Punch. It's my go to drink when I dine here. Their liquor is top shelf. You won't spot one bottle of El Cheapo. There's no cheap crap even when Happy Hour is going on. Who would've thought that you can get a buzz off of a $4 Rum Punch? The Happy Hour Menu consists of $4 drinks such as Long Island, Rum Punch, Sex On The Beach, & Martini just to name a few. The appetizers I ordered from the HH menu were $5 each. Some items offered on the menu are Jerk Wings, Jerk Pork, Fish Sticks, & Fried Shrimp. I ordered all four apps and everything was good. I wasn't expecting the apps to be as plentiful as they were. Before ordering the Fish Sticks make sure they have tartar sauce first. Today's visit went exceptionally well. The food was made quickly, it was the correct order, the food was delicious, the employee was polite, and I only spent $21. I attached a picture. I ordered ackee and salt fish, with fried dumplings and calaloo. The only negative thing I have to add is about the parking situation. Cars are double and triple parked in the street making it extremely busy in the area. I suggest going with someone (if you order takeout) so someone can stay in the car, as it's a busy corner. I had planned a birthday celebration for my dad with the dining manager, Ms. Janet. Upon arrival, my party and I were very impressed that they setup our table with balloons. The staff, customer service, food and music were amazing.
