I get we bring a lot of people for open bar things are going to be slow, but I'd expect them to be staffed to be able to serve at least 5 rounds in 2 hours. Server excused the wait by saying that we had a big group and the bartender was swamped but this was planned in advance and the restaurant honestly was not too packed. We had a reservation and were seated in a comfy corner booth. My drink (Rum for Cover) was super strong. I'd go for something less intense next time. My friend had a lighter drink that has passion fruit in it. We shared some light bites - pretzels, corn fritters and pumpkin cookies which were all yummy. We wanted to try the cauliflower dip but they were sold out. There's not a ton of vegetarian options for food - heads up. There's enough options for a vegetarian snack but don't come here starving if you're a vegetarian or you'll be disappointed. I really enjoyed the service. The first time I visited Porchlight, it was either 2016 or 2017, at 11pm or 12am, and I was exhausted, tipsy, and starving, because I had not eaten dinner. Scene set for you yet? Anyway, I remember where we sat, I remember having a pleasant experience, I remember liking the food and drinks, but I was at that point not thinking about reviewing the place, more so about filling my belly and going home. Fast forward to present day and I got to visit Porchlight as a more evolved (read: old) human, alert and sober (to start) person, ready to experience the place anew. It was as hard to get to as I remember, but once you're there, you'll know it's well worth the trip. We came here as a party of six on a Wednesday night. Despite it being out of the way, the space was pretty full (we had a reservation so we were fine). One nice thing about Porchlight is that, for a cocktail bar, it is quite big. Most spots serving top-notch drinks tend to be a fraction of the size. It makes the whole experience more lively and social, which is a nice change from the speakeasy-type vibe (which I love for dates and small hangs but not so much for larger groups). Obviously we got drinks to start, which meant that everyone got to witness my frantic, indecisive decision-making process, something that probably confused and possibly concerned the two people in our party I had met for the first time that night. When a cocktail menu is exciting but I'm not trying to get drunk, deliberating can be stressful for me. Ultimately, I was satisfied with the two drinks I ordered, and I also tried one of my husband's drinks which was outstanding as well. To start, I got the 51:49 Martini (The Botanist Gin, Fino Sherry, Italicus, Honey and Lemon Oil), which was probably my favorite drink of the night. It was smooth, impeccably balanced, floral, and elegant. I raved about it enough that another member of our party tried it despite not being a martini person, and she loved it as well. I finished with the Strider (Rittenhouse Rye, Montelobos Mezcal Espadin, Empirical Ayuuk, Cinnamon, Ancho Reyes Verde and Orange Bitters) because I love a split base of whiskey and mezcal. It was a little diluted for my taste but the flavors were there. My husband's drink that I reference was the The Woozle Effect (Plantation 3 Star Rum, Rhum JM VSOP, El Dorado 8yr Rum, Lustau Amontillado Sherry, Carpano Antica Formula, Cocchi Di Torino, Vanille de Madagascar, Yellow Chartreuse and Coco Blast no. 3), a complex but well-balanced rum Manhattan. Food-wise, Porchlight serves a small menu of southern-inspired bites, perfect for sharing. I was a bit worried going in because I'm gluten-free and most southern food is off-limits for me. I was thrilled to find that not only do they have GF/DF/etc designations on their menu, but they actually prepare many traditional southern dishes with gluten-free ingredients. I tried the Hush Puppies and Firecracker Chicken w/ Habañero Honey, which was a bit too much fried dough for my liking, gluten-free or not, but I was happy to try them. I also tried the Kale & Brussel Sprout Salad w/ Roasted Delicata Squash, Gala Apples, Dried Cranberries, Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Benne Seeds, Spiced Goat Cheese Dressing and Lemon Vinaigrette, which I loved. This bar is such a hidden gem! Located below the High Line, and just a couple of blocks from Hudson Yards, it might be easy to overlook but is definitely with a visit. The hostesses and servers provide really great hospitality. My friend and I were in a rush and they were able to get us in and out in less than an hour for dinner. They have an excellent happy hour from 4-7 every day of the week and we love the little flasks of spiked punch for just $5! Not only did they look adorable, but the punch tasted great. For dinner, we shared the fried chicken sliders and shrimp po'boy. The sliders were the definite winner with their crispy fried chicken and the kick from the hot honey. I found the po'boy to be good but a bit on the bland side, though the homemade chips it came with are excellent.
