This place was awesome! We came here last weekend before going to a concert at the Greek and it was just what we needed before the concert. Apparently this used to be a sports bar inside of the hotel it's in and they've renovated. The ambience was pretty low key, dimly lit- never would have known that this used to be a sports bar. Service was okay, our drinks took a little longer to be delivered and we just had wine and beer, but I think that's because the bar was kinda busy. Highlights: gnocchi, burger and shishito peppers were all amazing. We will definitely come back to this spot next time we're in Berkeley for a concert! I went here today with a friend for my first time ever. I had a cheeseboy burger (by the excellent chef Kronner), coffee, duck fat hash browns and a side of bacon. Everything was delicious and top notch. Staff was friendly and informative. I've been outside this building a million times through the decades but this is my first time going inside. This is a sad sad day. We just found out that Chris kronner no longer is the chef at Henry's. We've been coming here consistently once a month since they opened. It was our favorite Berkeley restaurant. Great food, great wine, amazing staff. We were sat at our table and the host never came back with our menus. Ten minutes later I had to go ask for them. Knew something was up when the menu was cut in half. All that was left were the burgers and a fish dish. When we looked at the wine menu, all of the great choices were gone. Replaced by cheap wines you can get a bottle for $10 at Trader Joe's but for $10 a glass. The waitress let us know Chris left and they were going to be changing to a bbq restaurant. She essentially talked shit about the food they used to serve here. The food we loved and craved. We left without wasting our money. read more

Joanne, John, Craig, and James are just a few of the kind people who have served me here, and they always make me feel welcome. Quick and easy! Ate on Monday and the service was really fun, with an interactive server. Food was great, especially the hummus with the toasted chickpeas on top which was my favorite. Wow this place has gone downhill. I'm pretty positive Chris Kronner doesn't own it anymore as the thing I got that was $16 and called a "Henry Burger" I couldn't see being served by one of the greatest burger chefs of our generation... the burger was thin, over cooked, and tasteless. Not the dry aged magic I used to have a year ago. I had food poising the last visit in April, then have it one last chance today only to be sadly disappointed. I will say it's a nice location, decent bar, so not all is lost. Just service has always been mediocre at best and now with the food going I have little reason to come here again. Heck they don't even have the Impossible Birger anymore, and they were one of the first to get the 2.0. So sad. read more

Lo and behold, Henry's has a newly revamped menu and a new chef! The menu options made it easy for me to choose what I wanted for dinner last night. It's great for large parties who prefer to indulge in shareable items, to soup & salad items to large plates. I chose to bring it back to basics last night and indulged in the Angry Mac & Cheese and Cobb Salad along with a gin based cocktail made by John. The Angry Mac & Cheese was rich with liquid cheese and delicious! The Cobb Salad was tasteful and fresh. This is definitely a hidden gem in the heart of Berkeley within walking distance from UC Berkeley. I would love to come back and try some other items on their new menu. read more

Superb! - Shaved summer squash salad. Also 5-star, both concept/execution were flawless. Any Michelin-starred restaurant would be proud to serve this. - Melon, burrata, prosciutto salad. Also 5-star. So good, I now make this at home; stunning combo. - Vegan Chocolate cherry bombe. STUNNING. One of the finest riffs on Black Forest Cake we've ever encountered, and we hit every French patisserie in Northern CA on a regular basis. I have no idea how anyone who created this, could also create the hideous fruit shortcake, below. Does Henry's have 2 pastry chefs?!? Just good: - Gnocchi with beef sugo. Too big, fried, heavy. Sugo had tender tasty beef shreds but hardly any sauce. What sauce there was, tasted ordinary; salt/dried oregano in a vaguely tomato-ish unthickened liquid. Oddly, there were leaves of fresh baby sage in the dish, not a great herbal pairing. Poor: - Pork chop w/peaches. One Yelper raved about this dish; must have been a different chef that day from what I got. Tough, too salty (and the au jus was even saltier!!) and the nectarines (not peaches) were just sliced and dropped on the plate. Sloppy all the way around, and almost inedible compared to the similar but much better chop w/stone fruit at Reve/Lafayette. - Stone fruit shortcake. This was simply embarrassing. The cake was prairie dust-dry; dense and hard. Fruit was again silced and dropped in the bowl; not a drop of juice to be found. Generous amount of whipped cream, but the cake was so dry, I felt I was chewing fine sand that was ever-so-slightly sweet. Blechhh. Heavy salting, btw, is a Chris Kronner characteristic. He overdoes it on occasion, and you never know when it's going to happen. Henry's could be very, very good, but it's just too erratic for "fine food". We should have taken the clue: everybody else in the dining room, without exception, was having the burger! (which is what made Kronner famous) read more

Based on the menus posted online and the fact that the former Kronnerburger chef/owner is involved, my expectations for Henry's were much different than the reality. First, this is just a burger place with a couple of other dishes (pasta and fish) on the Saturday we went. There was no pork belly, mussels, no pork chop (which was listed on the Yelp menu I viewed, the menu has since been taken down), no variety. Just burgers and grilled cheese really. Burgers and grilled cheese for $16 a pop. We got the chicory salad - it was fine. Like Kronnerburger the wine per glass is severely overpriced. But the burgers, the burgers were a huge disappointment. In N Out, Five Guys, Habit - you can get a better burger there for a fraction of the price. The patties were thin and overcooked, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were previously frozen patties. The fries were good. Our service was good. We told the waitress everything I'm writing here now and she comped both of our burgers. It was a great service gesture, but it still doesn't mean I'm not going to write an honest review about the crappiest, most overpriced burger I've ever had the misfortune to order, and tell people not to waste their time here. I really enjoyed my experience. Had the Caprese Melt - delicious! Mozzarella melted on thick grilled sourdough with tomatoes, basil and a drizzle of balsamic. The generous side of fries was some of the best fries I have ever had- CRAVEABLE! The Grand Manhattan was very good. A full bar with a nice selection and staff that know thier craft. Comfortable with a blend of patrons from "parent types" to students. Light on food selections, most likely covid related. Though I do wish they had a vegan option. read more

We were just here for drinks on a Thursday evening while visiting my daughter at Cal. Couldn't have had a nicer experience. Marceau was attentive and charming. This place is a gem within the telegraph area. Surrounded by college students, this restaurant attached to a hotel makes me feel like im somewhere fancy. We came in on a Thursday around 6:30pm and the first dining room was pretty crowded, the second one wasn't as crowded but the booths were all taken. They have long communal tables for people as well, and it seems like this is the place to make a reservation at, as we were able to snag the last table (according to the host) before everyone was seated at communal tables. The interior is super bright and has a lot of natural light in one dining room, the other (upon entering) was a little darker, and there was a third room which had some couches and I believe is more of a lounge area. They have a pretty solid menu, for a restaurant that has some pretentious vibes, I feel like they have a good variety of options. My mom and I ended up getting the herbed fries served w/ ketchup and cheddar mayo to share, they were INCREDIBLE !!! these are a must order if you go. I got the Parisian gnocchi and it was so good, the cherry tomatoes were incredibly fresh and then my mom got the peach and radish salad which was nice and light. The serving size here is very nice, its not big so you can enjoy your food without feeling heavy afterwards. From seeing other peoples dishes, most of the plates here are on the small side. The food comes out fairly quickly, the service here was also very friendly with routine check ups. I wish I ordered the dessert, but that's for next time, I'd love to go back soon when I'm near the telegraph area. This is a great place to catch up with a good friend over a meal! read more

Really, really awesome! Food: Went to the opening night for happy hour, and couldn't have been a better choice! Well at least in Berkeley bar wise. first for bread, tartine country bread for bread and toast service, and I overheard there might be breakfast soon, hopefully tartine pastry? I had the grilled country bread with zaatar and feta this time. The combo is delicious, charred and crispy dipped with the herbed feta in high quality EVOOc was every flavor pop you need, and the bread it self, drooling again... Second the cheese boy burger, supposedly the Kronner-style smash burger it was perfectly medium rare to my liking (I didn't even as so maybe if you don't like it you should indicate.) and the cheese, pickle, thousand island-y sauce worked together like a charm. The bun is sweet potato by tartine, light but tasty, love the buttered toastiness and the edges and all crispy subtly sweet and with the pounded patty, it's the perfect burger, like expected of Kronner. My friend also loooooved the maitake mushroom dish and would not stop talking about it. Didn't try the drinks but heard the Oaxaca cocktail is delicious. They also just came out with brunch service and another kale margherita, gotta say I'm intrigued! Prices & Vibe & Service: Affordable and reasonable for the quality of food, suitable for special occasion and such a beautiful vintage and artistic environment. After reading that Chris Kronner had taken over Henry's (https://sf.eater.com/2018/3/30/17181600/chris-kronner-tartine-team-henrys-hotel-durant), I decided to try the old place ASAP. I'd been to Henry's off and on over the years but hadn't visited it since the takeover of the Hotel Durant by the Graduate chain. The change in guard at the hotel pub presented an excellent opportunity for me to revisit what I used to think of as a game-day hangout spot. I reserved for an evening when the Warriors would be in a playoff game. I did this by coming in a few hours before the game and selecting a table based on the location where the TV screen was allegedly going to be installed for the game. In the end, TV screens were put in behind the bar and we were seated at a table near the bar with a good view of one of the screens. That was fine! In the new incarnation of the pub, the food and drink are excellent. There are a good number of well-chosen beers on tap and wines by the glass. The menu seems to feature relatively small plates; even the "mains" are medium-sized by my count. There are burgers, and I saw a lot of them being served. We ordered two salads, a serving of bread and butter (very good!) and the rockfish "main." I drank two glasses of gose -- one by Sierra Nevada and one by Laughing Monk. The goses were A-OK, but I thought that the Anderson Valley Briney Melon Gose that I had the week before was miles better than either of them. My dining companion ordered a pinot noir rose and liked it a lot. The servers were friendly and well-meaning but could have been a mite more laid back in our opinion. There was too much checking in with us to ensure that everything was still OK. The new incarnation of Henry's is a big step up from the old Henry's. This place was "hit or miss" for me, honestly. I stayed at the attached hotel (Graduate Berkeley) for 8 days on business, and I was hoping that Henry's would be a quick and convenient spot to eat a lot of meals. First of all, they aren't open for lunch, which was definitely a bummer. I ending up going for breakfast 2 times and dinner 2 times. The first breakfast was very good but expensive (biscuit with sausage gravy and side of avocado), and while the second breakfast (pictured here) looked good, it was a disappointment. Specifically, the egg and bun were not homemade. McDonald's has fresher eggs than the one I was served that morning. For dinner one night I got a burger and fries which was just average tasting. I forget the other dinner but I think it was better that the first. All in all, I would say I enjoyed my meal half of the time. read more

As a guest at the Graduate, Henry's was an easy choice - but I wasn't disappointed with either the last minute dinner or brunch the next day. Yes, the menu has changed so I went with the servers recommendation, ate at the bar, and was pleased with the service, food, and experience. The Bloody Mary brunch bar was amazing with made-from-scratch pickled carrots, celery, fennel, bacon and more. The fried chicken sandwich also satisfied and was on point. Had the Fifth and Adams tequila and mezcal cocktail served up with a nice slice of pineapple - very good. Ordered the fried green tomatoes- excellent, the wedge salad- good but needed more salt and dressing (which they charge for without telling you), and the burger- perfect. I'm giving it one extra star just because it was the only place adults could sit down and have a conversation. Everything else in this area is fast food for students. We wanted to meet friends, have dinner, go to a concert at Hertz. But that's where our appreciation ends. The food was abysmal. Apparently the chef is recently departed. The menu is nothing like what is on the website - no real cooking here - just fast food type stuff. My husband ordered the ahi, but they were out, he tried to get something else and they were out of that too, and were subbing it with a Mac and cheese. !? So we ended up settling for the tartine, a pizza-like flatbread. I ordered the arugula salad with it. I thought it might come before the meal, but everything came at the same time - about 20 minutes after we ordered. The plates that they served the pizza on were freezing cold, so the pizza was barely lukewarm. Our friend ordered the burger, and it was awful, as well. Cold, soggy. I thought this place was famous for its burgers. Patty was extremely thin and very overcooked. The fries were OK, nothing to write home about. My arugula salad was actually mixed greens. Apparently they were out of arugula. It was supposed to have a mustard vinaigrette, but it tasted like somebody had just globbed some French's mustard on it. Terrible! The server was very sweet, but very inexperienced. He comped me the salad since everything was wrong about it, but it was just plain hard to get down. Dry mixed greens with mustard. The Tartine could have been good - it was a very nice crust and very nicely cooked - the crust was perfect - dark brown, crispy and if it had been hot, it might've been good. Hopefully they'll keep that on the menu and learn how to get it out on a warm plate while it's still hot. They also knocked 15 bucks off of the tab, so the bill was under $50 for four of us, however we would've happily paid twice that for good food I didn't feel like we got a bargain. He said they're reopening next week, but I'm not holding my breath. There was more going on here than just a missing chef - there was total incompetence all around. If they didn't have a chef and they didn't have anyone who knew how to cook, they should've just simply closed the kitchen to everything except snacks and pupus. They have a nice bar and they should've capitalized on that. And for goodness sake's, learn how to warm your plates! They felt like they were stacked in front of an open window. read more

Don't skip out on this wonderful space if you're looking for a comfortable brunch setting with your closest friends, bathed in natural light and live jazz on Sundays. Brunch at Henry's is a mid-century mod dream. The staff is wonderful, the setting is full of natural light, and the rounded booths allow for a great time with friends. Thank you to Abraham, especially. There's a jazz band that plays during Sunday brunch; they're students at Cal and you should come out to support them! If you're choosing between Berkeley Social Club, La Note, or Henry's for brunch this weekend, consider Henry's: Berkeley Social Club is cacophonous. La Note ensures a sizable wait time. I am a fan of all three Berkeley institutions, and I hope they always remain unique gathering spaces for friends and family, but you're looking for a place on a whim to catch up with old friends this Sunday, this is the place. read more

We had so much fun at the bar with the bartender Jon Luke. They design the drinks on the menu and makes theur own ingredients! Would recommend the Honey Bear if you're a bourbon fan. They soak cedar chips in everclear for it! read more

Last night was our first time at Henry's in its new incarnation. We went for dinner w/ Barbara and Jay. Alan made 7:00 reservations. It started off auspiciously when we scored a parking space in the next block, someone pulling out just as we drove up. We were greeted by Marissa, who was also our server. She directed us to a booth. I had misgivings but there were no tables available because there was a large party of gymnasts there and all the tables had been pushed together. I said I was going to find the restroom. Marissa asked if I'd been there before and when I said yes, and I could *probably* find it again, she led me there. Wonderful service. The bathroom is wallpapered in grizzly bears in Cal colors. The lobby area is understated, w/ couches and comfortable seating. It looks a bit more refined than it had. We looked over the menus, food on one side and drinks on the other. I decided on a 5th and Adams cocktail, combination of mezcal, ginger, lemon or lime and pineapple. I think. It was delicious and beautiful, served in an old style champagne glass w/ a thin half circle slice of pineapple inside the glass, looking like a fan or the back of Huey Newton's peacock chair in that iconic photo. I had two. Barbara had a Western Sour and I forget what Jay had. Alan had water. We ordered fried green tomatoes to share and wings w/ a spicy dipping sauce. At first it was uncomfortably noisy and difficult to hear one another, but once the large party left it quieted down and became more pleasant. The booth, by the way, was very comfortable, roomy, w/ solid seating. The fried green tomatoes were fabulous, enough that we ordered another round. Alan and I agreed they were the best we'd ever had. The chicken wings were excellent. They were a bit too salty for Alan, but the rest of us loved them, particularly Jay, who's a spice fiend and reveled in the spicy dipping sauce. For our mains Alan ordered a hamburger, Barbara and I ordered the pork chop and Jay ordered gnocchi. Marissa joked that she was going to go cook them and after she brought them she asked how we liked her cooking. We did. Alan's hamburger looked small to me, but he said it was very good, cooked medium rare as he requested, the meat juicy and flavorful. The pork chop was moist and delicious, accompanied by sliced nectarine, roasted zucchini and polenta. Each aspect of the dish was terrific. Jay enjoyed his gnocchi. Alan and I agreed prices were reasonable and quality and service were excellent. We will definitely return, though not on a Saturday night. read more

We had reservations before the Bastille concert at the Greek. We arrived a bit after 4 to get a drink and the bartenders were not happy with each other. The vibe was just negative. We cancelled our reservation and went to eat down the street. We came back to the bar and tried again but it was no better. We asked how far the Greek Theater was and the female bartender said I don't know and walked away. The young man who was seating people went and asked someone and told us up the hill to the left. He was very helpful and friendly. We heard this place was great back in the day but wouldn't recommend it now. read more

Then it took another 25 minutes after that to get our order on the table. So 40 minute wait time, and no apology. Two waitresses for 50 diners. The food was average but lukewarm. read more
