I am an East Bay local who loves trying new places to eat. Recently I went to Henry`s located at the Graduate Berkeley Hotel for restaurant week and it was fabulous. The atmosphere was warm & welcoming and there was a beautiful wooden bar. My partner & I opted for the prix fixed dinner menu for $30 a person, which included an appetizer, main course and dessert. I had the braised smoked lamb shank over a bed of creamy mushroom risotto with a red wine sauce and broccolini. The lamb was some of the best I`ve ever had, it was so tender and juicy. We also enjoyed the chocolate pecan creme brulee and a few craft cocktails. Our server mentioned that Henry`s also does a brunch on Saturdays & Sundays. We will definitely be back to try it. read more

We've had two dinners here. Both times we've gotten the burger and salads. The salads are excellent, probably my favorite at any restaurant right now since they're really interesting and can make a good small meal. The burger is great too (and my husband thinks it's better than the Kronnerburger ones!). We had dessert once, and it was so-so -- I wouldn't get it again. Drinks are great - had a house cocktail for $6 and it was excellent. Great beer list too. Service is super friendly and accommodating, and the place itself is very pretty. read more

Very loud, even on a Thursday at 6pm. They turned down the music when we asked, which I greatly appreciated, but it was still loud. I think it's the acoustics of the room. Food was not great. Albacore Crudo -- very good, a tad spicy Shishito Peppers -- so spicy I couldn't eat them (these peppers are mild, but they drowned them in chili oil, and there was no description of that on the menu. Here I feel the need to note that I like spicy food. I usually pick "medium" when offered a spice range) Gem lettuce with chili vinaigrette -- way too much dressing. It was drenched. Mussels -- excellent Gnocchi with beef sugo -- gnocchi were tender and delicious but meat sauce was greasy and boring. read more

So much more than a hotel restaurant! We arrived, tired and harried, toward the end of their lunch service on a Saturday. We left fed, watered and refreshed. The burgers are something special. The buns have a Japanese sweet potato base--sounds curious, but it was the bun of my dreams. It has been awhile since I've been here since the remodel but, the dim lighting and atmosphere allowed me to enjoy the time here with my friends. I read the earlier reviews and it seems as though they worked out their problems in service. Our server was very quaint, and responsive and even joked with us about the chefs. I can tell the chefs care about their food! For light staffing from what I could see people didn't have to wait long and the hostess was very sweet with other tables. I had the sirloin steak and the peanut macha sauce glazed over the top and it was layered with a perfect amount of kick. My friend had the cheeseboy, and I highly recommend that as well, I am not sure how they make the relish but, I'd want to eat it on toast. For the wine, the populis has a weird texture, I am not sure what kind of wine it is but it was pretty funky. Wines to try: The rose Scribe, high acidity and well balanced. The chenin blanc dry, light and balanced, or any of the purity wines. I wish they had more brut champagne- but I know it is cruel to complain. I would recommend people shouldn't be too hard on places starting out and I'd give it another shot you won't be let down. read more

The burger here was phenomenal but the service was the worst I've ever experienced, not just in the Bay Area but anywhere. It took forever to be greeted by the server, who seemed high as hell, and he didn't know anything about the wines or food and never checked in after the food came out. We waited almost 30 minutes after we finished our food to get the check, even with trying to call him and flag him down. He wouldn't even look in our direction when he was at the next table over. Also frustrating that we traveled an hour and a half to come to this restaurant for an event that was advertised as "Mini Horsefest with Eric Wareheim & Joel pouring wine all night long" and we neither saw any mini horses nor Eric Wareheim. We asked the waiter about it and he said he would look into it but gave us no answer. Also watched a vegetarian at the next table get served a veggie burger topped with bone marrow. Henry's served the best veggie burger that I've had in years. It's called the Earthburger. Needs a new name. The burger was moist. I could taste the veggies. The bun was super moist. The arugula salad, called Greens, should have received a better description. It was wonderful: arugula, shaved Parm and a terrific light dressing. Our server and his trainee were great. I dropped my fork and the new trainee, two days on the job, spotted it and immediately brought me a new set of utensils. The atmosphere is a bit drab, they no longer use their former dining room and stick to the pub, but I'd go again for the food and service. read more

Worst customer service I've ever experienced. Which is a huge insult to the business because the food was actually pretty good. Marissa the bar manager either hates her job or customers in general. We interacted very little but there was a point where my fiancé ordered a glass of wine. The poor was below average maybe 3-4 ounces. I said something to Marissa and her reply was are you a bartender? No I'm not but I am a patron and do drink wine frequently enough to understand the poor was way below average and I am paying for a full glass.She then turned her back to us and continued doing what she was doing. A few moments later she came back and said I would have topped you off with whatever you liked what do you like. I believe she at least thought about the sly remark she made and the way she treated us but It was all downhill from there and very awkward going forward. I tried to tell her I wasn't trying to be rude but she just smirked a little and walked to the other side of the bar.I even had to involve the front desk at one point when Marissa proceeded to tell me and my guest to leave and go home. I did overreact a little when the bill was rung wrong and get the front desk involved because That's exactly what we were trying to do but there were items on the bill that we didn't order so it needed to be adjusted first so we couldn't just leave and go home per your direction unfortunately . Very uncomfortable, unprofessional and ruined what should have been a pleasant evening out with friends. read more

Amateur Hour !!! They advertised an outdoor burgers and beer event in the lobby of the Hotel for graduation day beginning at 1 PM. We got there at 1:05 PM and they were still setting up and had not even started the coals. We stuck around thinking it might get better but it got much worse. The people taking the orders did not know how to use the payment system so even more wasted time while we watched them learn. We ordered 5 burgers for 5 people and when they came the meat was purple and cold. Not pink and warm, not red and juicy, but dark purple and ice cold in the center. To make things even worse, the meat when re-heated tasted more like salmon than beef. I was the only one brave enough to try breakfast in the restaurant proper the next morning and was again shocked at the lack of service and terrible food. Avoid if possible!!! read more

Eating here was a horrible experience; the restaurant had the worst customer service that I have ever experienced. Marissa the bartender was extremely rude and condescending to myself and my party. The drinks were inconsistent (some way too strong, some too watery, and wine pours inconsistent). We were charged for things we didn't order and were treated as though we were in the wrong when we asked for them to be removed from our bill (one of which was never removed and I just paid). Wish I had read recent reviews before returning to Henry's... we had been here a few times in the past years and really enjoyed the food, and being able to get our favorite Kronner Burger after they closed. But we just went tonight and the food was terrIble. The burger (which was offered medium, initial sign something was wrong as Kronner burger was always pretty rare) was served well, without any toppings other than American cheese. Not remotely the burger of our past visits. The menu was a stripped down version of what it was before and had the odd addition of a bbq section but served "proudly" with store bought BBQ sauce. We also got the Mac and cheeese and Cobb salad. The salad was ok and the Mac and cheese was just pasta in a nacho cheese type sauce, which arrived in chipped serve ware. All in all very disappointed. After we ate, and were speculating what had gone wrong, we googled it and found that Chris Kronner had left. Then when the bill came we saw they had oragami folded the old paper menus from back when the food was actually good (I miss you cheeseboy!) to create a check holder. Pretty hilarious considering. Food was fine. However, noise level was off the chain and took away from the enjoyment of the meal. Waaaay too loud. Had to speak in very raised voices in both dining rooms - and it wasn't even busy. Mentioned this to the hostess upon leaving, and she said to come back between 5:00 and 5:30. Sorry, but I prefer to dine in restaurants that have regard to the comfort of their patrons - all the time. Won't be returning. I must start out saying that the food here was good. But the staff really seemed to not be prepared for service on a Sunday at noon and it really ruined our lunch. I made a reservation for six and when we arrived we stood at the host stand for maybe 15 minutes before anyone came to help us. There was one busser running around and one server/bartender from what I could see. By the time the Server/Bartender/Host came over to us to seat us, I told her we had a reservation for six, and she looked around and was like "hmmm we don't have any big tables left." There were probably 5 tables with people at them total in the restaurant, and all of these were large tables that had 1-3 people sitting at them. Some with laptops. "Can you ask that girl who is taking up a huge table all to herself to move so we can sit there?" I asked. The waitress/bartender/host walked away and when she returned several minutes later she said she called a manager who could come figure out what to do. At this point we were already there for probably 20 minutes, and I am very pregnant and holding my toddler. So I asked her to just move some tables together and put us there. Super annoying. Eventually we were sat and the server/bartender/host was very apologetic but, I mean, come on. Get your shit together. Once we ordered, our food took nearly 45 minutes to come out. Unreal. We had a show to catch on top of it all, so we scarfed our food down in 10 mins and left. Nothing was taken off of the bill either. This place is in serious need of some management and training for its staff. What a shit show. Oh and they don't have highchairs OR booster seats, so be prepared for that. read more

They also will only cook your hamburger rare, medium, or well done...what??? They seem to have a slight disdain for non locals. I would never go back here. read more

First time staying at the Graduate. I was here for the weekend and stopped in here before we went to the show since it's connected to the hotel. Started off without getting a coaster and then took a few others getting served that walked up after we were seated at the bar. A second coaster was given to the patron next to us and the bar tender stated they have an abundance of coasters. And I look at our drinks without them. I asked for my tab to be left open and it was closed anyways and the card and receipt was brought out, I still tipped decent none the less. I asked for a menu and was given one before the bartender walks to the back for about 15 minutes and never checks on us again. Two other bar tenders stay on their side and don't check on us as our drinks were almost empty. I don't know if it was because we were younger than everyone else at the bar or more ethnic, either way I felt we deserved much better service than received. And for the time it's taken me to write this we still haven't had the bar tender come back or our food order taken. Oh well time to go to the concert anyway... read more

Disappointed is the best description I can come up with. Had heard many good things about the chef/owner. Ordered Earthburger which was overcooked and flavorless. Friends ordered pork and steak which were passable, not memorable. The dining room was 3/4 full and incredibly noisy - The high ceilings do not provide the desirable acoustics necessary for a pleasant dining experience. I made a reservation for this place for 6:30 and when I got there at 6:25 the person at the front told me they didn't have one under my name, and that OpenTable is a third party vendor and the problem was on their end. Luckily we were only 2 and there was room at the bar. The bar was out of the first 2 draft beers my companion wanted. The menu is small and they didn't have a "fish of the day" so we settled on an appetizer and a couple sandwiches. It took a long time for the food to arrive and the sandwiches came out without the appetizer. We were then told that the "kitchen lost the appetizer order" how did they do that but not lose the sandwich order? The sandwiches were mediocre at best. To top it all off I got an email from open table saying that the restaurant had canceled my reservation at 6:19 while I was parking my car and walking to my appointment!
