We are visiting from Texas. Went to Herbie's because we heard about it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Arrived pretty early (4:30pm) for drinks/dinner. It wasn't busy. I large table was there. Server came over to bring menus and take our drink order. We wanted a domestic beer, but they only have craft beer. She was very helpful and tried to find something that would be close to what we normally drink. We tried a couple of different beers and found one we liked. We ordered the Chicken and Smashed Potato, the kids sliders and the Red neck Ruben. Both were very good. Chicken was tender, juicy and cooked perfectly. It was a HUGE portion. The Redneck Ruben was flavorful and also a large portion. The kids sliders were good, our 10 year old enjoyed them. Our server was super friendly and helpful. I wish I would have asked her name. We were asking her about some fun local things to do. She suggested a few things in Marathon and some others in Key West. We will definitely return. We stopped into Herbie's for the first time today after having driven by it for over a year, and we're so glad we did! The BBQ Platter was excellent from the brisket to the pork to the turkey and ribs. And their fries might have been the best we've ever had. This is definitely a laid back and super casual dive style restaurant, but everything we sampled was delicious. We were doing more of a bar hop with a group of 8, so we sat at the picnic tables in the screened area and enjoyed their many beer offerings. We sampled the conch chowder - which was tomato based and really good! The guys in our group are all cooks and they thought the smoked wings were fantastic. Started to remove one star as the waitress was a little rushed/short with us - it was slow during our midafternoon weekday visit - but I think they are just used to being super busy as it seems this place is usually hopping! Stopped by for dinner on a Friday, just passing through. It was a little busy so the service was super slow. It took at least 20 minutes just to get water. Getting our order in was another 20. I got the clam chowder which was the best I've ever had. So creamy and delicious. For my entree, I got the hot Nashville chicken. It was not hot. We were staying in the area and looking for something close for dinner. We decided on Herbie's. A great selection of craft beers everything local to outside the area. We highly recommend the Ace cider pineapple if you like ciders it is delicious. My amazingly beautiful wife got the best chicken sandwich she has ever eaten and that says a lot because she is very picky about her chicken. I ordered the drunken clams and it was by far one of the most amazing sauces I've ever had the only thing they did not do was give me enough bread to suck it all up. This is a must stop if you're driving through or you're staying in the area we will absolutely be back. read more

Maybe it was an off night for the Herbster... but we really didn't dig our meal. The smoked items (brisket and fish) were so incredibly dry. And unfortunately, they weren't too keen on subbing anything (we don't ask for much, so I was surprised that they were not agreeable here). And, they only have beer and wine. Cute little spot and I see the barrage of great reviews - so I'm giving it a 3 star. Feel like it has promise, but it didn't hit the mark for me and I prob will choose other Marathon restaurants over trying it again. read more

Had dinner here the first night in the keys and all I can say is yum!!!! The ladies working were friendly and willing to answer questions. Huge selection of beer to chose from. We started with the Conch Fritters and they were good a loaded with conch. Then onto the Clam Chowder nice and thick, but probably would have skipped after seeing the huge portion of Fried Chicken with smashed potatoes and this was excellent. After a very long week, I called in a Carryout order at 8:00 pm on a busy Friday night. The bartender wasn't sure that the kitchen was doing takeout orders that evening, but she kindly asked me what I was hoping to order (fish and chips), checked with the kitchen, and they agreed to accommodate this hungry local. {I *may* have brought in some beers to tip the kitchen, I was so grateful!} I got home and popped open the (vented, so the fries didn't get soggy) carryout container to find divinely crisp and golden-brown fried fish. The batter coating was absolutely PERFECT - I haven't had real British style Fish & Chips in years - and this was sooooo good! The fish was a nice thick filet of fresh Mahi Mahi, not one of the frozen slabs from Sysco. Fries were yummy, too. But the real stand out was the Cole Slaw. Not dressed in thick mayonnaise, but rather a light apple-cider vinegar/honey vinaigrette. It kept the veggies crispy, and was a refreshing contrast to the heaviness of the fish and chips. We absolutely loved Herbies! It's a super laid back place with beer buckets as island lights. Our server was informative and quick as well. We sampled the Broski passion fruit cider, Original Sin rosé, and twisted sister IPA. All of them were delicious in their own way. The Broski is a brewer we hadn't heard of from Pompano Beach. Their passion fruit was TO DIE FOR!! It tasted more like a mead than like a cider. The rosé was super crisp and light. The IPA was very hoppy and I loved the crisp twist to it! We split the conch chowder and absolutely loved it!! It was spicy but we both enjoy spice. The conch was fresh and the soup had a good pepper, tomato base. I had the buffalo mahi mahi wrap and hubs had the fried oyster Po'Boy. The mahi wrap was absolute perfection and the buffalo sauce was spiiiicy, but I loved it! Tasty and being smoked was a great twist I really liked and will have again. I did really like the craft beer selection and really want to go back and try a few. We were brought here from some local friends as their spot to grab some good grub and I can see why...their selections not only are huge portions, but all of their items are done from scratch. 4/5 Cup Clam Chowder $4.45 was very good...full of clams and really smooth, and not so thick like at some places that you find it. 4/5 Fish and Chips $18.95 was 3 large pieces of fish on top of a bed of sliced fried onion pieces that were both fried and huge in portion. After the soup, it weighed on me too much so most of the fried onions stayed exactly where they were. I didn't want fries so they gave me onions rings and charged $3.00 more. 4/5 Chicken and Smashed Potato $16.95 was also really good; it wasn't my dish but I tried a piece. The coating came off, not sticking to it, and it was just enormous. 5/5 Service was friendly and fast and enjoyable. read more

I showed up 15 minutes before closing so I had braced myself for the "the kitchen is closed" response, but instead the bartender/server/marine biologist could not have been more welcoming, kind, and ingratiating. I ordered a bowl of clam chowder, a redneck reuben and an iced tea. Because I was just running into grab something quick and head home, I sat in the outside, smaller portion of Herbie's. I always enjoy the ambience of old Florida Keys/dive bar type feel but great attention paid to the little details. It's obvious that the ownership invest money and has pride in his business. The clam chowder was thick, filled with clams and delicious. I added a little hot sauce to kick it up a notch, but that's just my preference. The redneck reuben was perfect with brisket, coleslaw, and pickles. I really like that the Texas toast isn't sloshed with some nasty kitchen butter, but is just toasted enough to pick up and eat without it getting a squishy and everything falling apart, although it's so stuffed that some of it is going to fall onto the plate, which is great because I use a fork to eat the rest. The fries has not been sitting in the kitchen, but clearly had just come out of the fryer. They were clean, crispy and delicious. I think this would be a great place for breakfast, especially now that Stout's has closed. For now, be sure to check it out during lunch or dinner... You can't go wrong at Herbie's! read more

I came here with high expectations (the place was on the Guy Fieri show). And I was completely blown away. The location is nice and quaint. The service was excellent. And the food was out of this world. I like the fact that they had beer shooters so that a few can be tried without breaking the bank. We had the conch fritters and pork belly to start which was very good. And we had the fried chicken for our meal. It's a must-try item. So special and different.
