I was so excited to try this place, and the excitement was definitely earned! We decided to stop in for dinner. There are so many yummy things on the menu that it was so hard to decide, but I decided on a crunch wrap and my husband ordered a burger. First off, I love how the restaurant is set up with almost food-truck atmosphere and outdoor seating. That's so perfect for such a wonderful area and beautiful weather. The two employees working, which I believe are the owners, were super nice and genuinely happy to help us. I ended up asking a few more questions while we waited for our food, and they were very helpful. Due to their input, I ended up also getting a cheesecake slice (yum) and dole whip (for the first time, and holy *!+$! it was sooo good I've been dreaming about it since!). Our food was available pretty quickly, and it looked amazing! My husband greatly enjoyed his burger, which is saying something since he's all about veggie burgers now (recent convert to vegetarian, so still extremely discerning). My crunch wrap was AMAZING! Everything about it was so good. The dipping sauce was fantastic, and I would have that for virtually every meal if I could. The crunch wrap was perfectly hot and full of all sorts of yummy! The tortilla was toasted well and wasn't just a boring white tortilla: I'm pretty sure it was a wheat tortilla with a great flavor. I wish I lived closer. I'd be here all the time. Jackfruit nachos - 4/5 - hefty bowl of jackfruit nachos with lots of toppings! The bbq jackfruit was very good, it's on the sweet side but that's how bbq sauce is. More vegan queso would have been nice too as it kind of got overwhelmed by the other flavors. It's really a few tables decorated to look like the seating area is in a garden. There are not outlets for you to use or any WiFi btw. I ordered the Chicken Caesar's Salad. It was served with a whole lotta lettuce, local tomatoes, grilled chicken, organic croutons, Cashew Caesar dressing with Parmesan cheese. This salad was delicious and would order again. I thought the service was interesting. I was there to enjoy my food which I did for the most part, but then felt like I was dumped on by one of the employees. I loved loved loved this fully vegan fast food joint on the big island. Best part is that they're open from 8am to 8pm. To the unfriendly guy that was working on August 8, 2025 at 630pm-8pm...THE HAWAIIAN PIZZA GAVE MY BF 4 DAYS OF FOOD POISONING AND WE HAD TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL!!! Before I get into that, I'll just start how everything went down from start to finish. The restaurant is a little shack with outdoor shaded seating in the middle of a parking lot. As you know parking in Kona is expensive but this parking lot allows you 90 minutes of free parking. Me and the bf still didn't want to park there just in case we take forever so we just parked up by Jack in the box lol. We walked down to the restaurant, grabbed the menus from the cashier window to see what foods we want. We went up to the cashier and see the guy just sitting in there watching TV with his back facing away from us, I greeted "Hello there! We're ready to order." he then slowly turned his head with a mean cold silent stare, not even a hello back, he just passed me a QR code and said "Order here". In my mind I was like okay? At least say hello??? So we used the QR code and mobile order from their website. When you submit your order, you'll hear a ring noise from the shack so you know your order went in, you also get notification in your texts that your order is submitted. We waited about 30 minutes, took awhile since he's the only one running it so I recommend ordering ahead of time on their website. You'll get a text notification that your order is done. FYI since he's very unfriendly, he will not announce that your order is done so you'll have to flag him down at the cashier window. Here's what we ordered: - Hawaiian Pizza 10inch - BBQ jackfruit sandwich (includes chips) - Uncle island refresher The Uncle island refresher tasted mostly like mint tea, I couldn't taste any of the fruits inside and it was all very bitter to eat and drink. The BBQ jackfruit sandwich was okay, it was very different and I kind of enjoyed it. It paired well with the chips. I ate one slice of my bf's Hawaiian pizza, it tasted fine? But it was difficult to eat since the crust was flimsy thin and if you were to try eat it will all just fall off leaving with just the bread. So I had to eat it with a fork. 2 hours later, my poor bf had the worst tummy ache of his life and was stuck in the bathroom detoxing his whole insides out. It continued like this for our whole entire Kona vacation! His diarrhea was happening every other hour non stop! Were now going to the hospital soon since his body was starting to get severely dehydrated. So far I feel fine, for now......my bf's stomach is much more sensitive than mines. Not sure if the pizza sauce might of been left out too long, angry sweat drips on the food, unsanitary food handling, maybe E.coli? who knows???? Escaped chilly Waimea and wandered the warmer Kona coast on my day off. Followed a path with a stair that literally said "Be Love," which led to this tiny plant-based shack. The sacrilegious "Friends - Not Food" Last Supper napkin holder with adorable animals sealed it. New mandatory Kona stop. A few observations. The staff was polite, but when I asked for recommendations (a sacred ritual when entering ant new food situation), the cashier gently declined responsibility for my happiness. Apparently she's recommended things before and people didn't like them. Fair. Trauma is real. But please don't tell customers that people didn't like your food. It spoils the mood and makes people wonder if they should even order. Finding myself without any advice, I chose the Margherita Pizza. Then I asked what drink she liked. Same response. At this point I realized I was dining at a restaurant deeply committed to free will. The cashew cheese? Genuinely delightful. Fresh basil? Lovely, but unfortunately cooked. The pizza overall was good... for what non-Italians call pizza. But it had marinara sauce... on a Margherita Pizza, which is what Italians would see as truly sacrilegious. I grew up in Italy, which means I was issued strong and unnecessary Margherita opinions since childhood. If you want to make yours stand out (please do!) here are some easy, no-nonsense suggestions that require less work! If you're going to call it Margherita (Neapolitan specialty) there are some simple rules. Sacred ones. The dough should taste great on its own, and not be a mere base for toppings. Some small creative changes in the making of it could make it next level authentic. Check out some true Italian pizza dough recipes. The tomatoes should be San Marzanos, or at least grown in volcanic soil (like Mount Vesuvius)--not hard to achieve on a volcanic island like ours. They should be hand-crushed, lightly salted, and not pre-cooked into sauce. Skip the marinara base! Crushed tomatoes should meet the oven for the first and only time together with the dough. Like a proper introduction. Since you are aiming for plant-based, the cashew cheese should aim for the spirit of mozzarella di bufala or fior di latte--torn into soft pieces, not shredded, and definitely not liquid. Think creamy, not cashew soup. There are some outstanding cashew cheeses you can try to decide the right texture and consistency. Basil should be fresh and raw, ideally added after baking so it smells like summer instead of regret. And a final drizzle of good extra-virgin olive oil should whisper, "Yes, this pizza was intentional." If you make those small changes, your Margherita may end up literally being the best on the island. The watermelon mocktail was refreshing but a little shy on flavor--maybe consider adding spices? There are endless options that could make it really stand out and stop whispering. All that said--and this part matters--huge congratulations on creating a plant-based establishment with real variety. Comfort foods from multiple cultures, right here in Kona, where options like this are still far too rare, is no small thing. I had a genuinely delightful experience despite my affectionate, Italian-flavored nitpicking, and I'm excited to come back for the tacos, burgers, cheesecake, and another round of drinks. A gentle reminder from a happy customer: there's real joy in helping make people's day more enjoyable--especially when you get to work at such a unique spot on an island that could really use more creative, thoughtful plant-based alternatives. We had such a great experience at Herbivores Vegan Cafe. We came in on a Sunday when a big storm hit, and they originally weren't even planning to open--but Chef Jeffery decided to open anyway, and he was running the whole place by himself. Despite everything, he was so kind, welcoming, and genuinely funny. You could tell he really cared about making sure everyone still had a great experience, even under stressful circumstances. It honestly made the whole visit feel extra special. The food was amazing. We had the Big Moke and the burrito, and both were so good. We ended up coming back again later in our trip because we loved it so much. The second time, we got the Caesar salad (which was delicious, though we did feel the extra charge for additional sauce was a bit high), along with the burger again and a smoothie. Overall, such a great experience--amazing vegan food, a welcoming atmosphere, and a chef who truly goes above and beyond. We'll definitely be back! read more

After a delayed flight and no food for 8 hours, we finally landed in Kona and found Herbivores after searching for a vegan restaurant. Truly some of the best vegan food I've ever had!!! We ordered the big moke burger, macvegan breakfast sandwich, carne asada tacos, and the wings and everything was delicious! Jeff the chef even came out to check on us and make sure we liked everything. The wings were definitely one of my favorite things! Who knew you could make vegan bone in wings with sugarcane??? Amazing!!!! We also got strawberry lemonades and the mint hibiscus tea which was so refreshing! Herbivores used to be one of my favorite vegan spots in Kona -- a place I genuinely recommended for real, whole-food vegan meals. I was really disappointed to see the tofu breakfast burrito replaced with a highly processed fake meat + Just Egg version. Just Egg is loaded with canola oil and additives, and it feels like a major step away from the wholesome, intentional food this place was known for. It's frustrating to watch great local restaurants lower their quality to appeal to tourism instead of prioritizing health-conscious regulars and the community that supported them early on. I hope they reconsider and bring back more whole-food, less processed options. read more

After a 20 hour travel day to the Big Island, we landed exhausted, hungry, and honestly a little stressed about how we were going to feed our family that late at night, especially as a vegan family with limited options. We saw that Herbivores was about to close, but the kids really had their hearts set on it. I hesitated to call because I never like arriving right at closing, but I'm so glad I did. When I called, they were incredibly kind and welcoming and told us to come on over, no problem. That simple moment completely changed our night. We rushed from the airport, and when we arrived, Chef Jeffrey and Shawn took such amazing care of us. The food came out quickly, which mattered so much with hungry kids, and everything was absolutely delicious. The Big Mac style burgers and loco moco were exactly what we needed after such a long journey. What truly stood out was the kindness. After our meal, they surprised the kids with free soft serve, and it honestly meant so much. After such a long and tiring day, they did not just serve us dinner, they made us feel welcome, cared for, and part of their ohana. That level of hospitality is something special. You can feel the heart behind this place. If you are on the Kona side and looking for incredible vegan food and genuinely kind people, this is a must visit. We will absolutely be back. I had this place on my list for our Hawaii trip, but was lucky enough to try it due to my group getting food in the same shopping center. I called and placed an order for pick up, and it was an easy pleasant experience. (Not many phone orders are haha). The store itself is a small cafe in the middle of the shopping center, no inside for customers. It looked to be ran by a couple, both extremely kind and helpful, as well as fun to talk to. All of the food here is vegan and I wish I could've tried more. I ordered a pizza over the phone, but upon arrival saw they had vegan spam masubi and I had to try that as well. For the pizza I got the New Mexico green chile with extra chicken- both items were delicious and satisfying. Being on a group trip and an island where veggie food isn't popular, this was a breath of fresh air. My only regret is not being able to try more. Chef Jeffery did such an amazing job! This place may be listed as "fast food" but it really is an outdoor sit down place, the food is all fresh and tastes amazing. Me and my family traveled from Utah and were so happy to see vegan options in Kona, and usually vegan spots can be meh, kind of so so spots, but herbivores was 11/10, chef Jeffery came out and talked with us about his experience of going vegan and he is just the best, so good we came back 2 days in a row, highly recommend the Rebel Burrito and the Nutter Butter soft serve, amazing for vegan food. WOW!!!! This was one of my favorites when I visited the Big Island! I had to go TWICE for the pineapple smoothie with strawberry swirl! It was soo good and refreshing on a hot day. I heard about this place on YouTube so had to stop by! It was conveniently close to our hotel and after almost 20k steps at Volcanoes National Park we decided to feast! We got the jackfruit nachos, mango habanero wings, loco moco and the nutter butter cheesecake. Honestly it was all amazing - if you didn't tell me, I wouldn't have know that it was vegan. As vegetarians we eat a lot of vegan foods but this one does top them all. The spices, the flavor the blend of textures is perfect! Highly recommend and would definitely stop by again! We were on the Big Island for a week and stopped here twice! We loved it so much. I wish we had something like this in our town but unfortunately we don't. Pro-tip, if you're going to order the pizza do yourself a favor and order it online so you don't have to wait long! The first night we went to Herbivores, my daughter ordered the large animal lovers pizza (delicious- in fact i took two slices from her), my husband ordered their Pono burger and chips and my son ordered their chicken and pesto sandwich. I ordered the 'Poke" which is made out of tofu as well as their Chickpea Tuna salad. I liked the Poke but I LOVED LOVED LOVED the chickpea tuna salad. SO delicious! The vibes are super casual, dining outside in the parking lot area and music playing. The second visit, my daughter ordered another pizza (I think it was their Margherita pizza) and it was another well enjoyed dish. My husband ordered another burger (I don't remember what but he finished it off without hesitation), my son ordered the chicken and pesto sandwich again and I ordered the Chickn Caesar salad (dressing on the side). There are covered outdoor seatings available - so I found that part comfortable! However, there was nothing else which we liked so much so I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. I feel sad to give 2 stars to this popular place but here are my reasons- We reached the food joint at around 11:15 AM(or before) and unfortunately by then they'd decided they'll stop serving the breakfast menu. We decided to order something from that menu but they said no to my partner in a very rude way apparently. My partner who is generally calmer than me decided not to order anything(even though he was the one more excited about the burrito). It was one of the last days of our trip in Kona so I still went ahead and ordered something for us to try. I was surprised,I was disappointed too. As you can clearly see in the menu, it doesn't say the nachos has barbecue sauce- I didn't know it too. I cannot stand this sauce and this dish was full of it. To my surprise, when the restaurant owner casually walking by and asked us how the food was I told him it's nice but a little sweet for my taste. He said it has barbecue sauce for the jackfruit and he started teaching me the barbecue sauce has maple syrup in it.. this is why it's sweet. We both left the place with a sad start to our day :(. Both bowls are absolutely amazing. The food here was definitely the best vegetarian I've had. The poke bowl was definitely the best vegetarian poke I've had. The tofu poke was perfectly seasoned and really mixed well with the purple sweet potatoes. The Pohaku bowl ingredients also mixed really well together. The cashew cheese was really really well done; something I don't think I've ever said about vegan cheese. The pricing was also really reasonable given the pretty big portion sizes. My family and I found this place and noticed immediately that it was set up beautifully for an outdoor dining experience. It is a vegan place and regardless of not being vegan, we enjoyed it greatly. My uncle was able to easily order gluten free as he cannot eat gluten. My wife and I enjoyed a loaded chili dog and recommend highly the carneasada tacos. This is a cute stand right in the middle of a parking lot. They do offer limited seating outside under a couple gazebos which is nice. The staff were super friendly and just super fun to interact with. I ordered the Potato Broccoli Curry with Rice(4/5) and it was enjoyable. You could really taste the curry flavors however my only complaint is that it needed some salt. Once I added the salt, it was perfect and super enjoyable ! I will say I had a bite of the Tofu Poke Bowl from my friend and that was amazing ! It smelled just like poke and the flavor was spot on. It really tasted like the real thing. I was so excited to try Herbivores, and want to give it another try. This was the first vegan spot we tried upon landing in Kailua-Kona. It's a small standalone kitchen with a walk up and drive up window, in the middle of a parking lot. The menu is FULL of incredible, all vegan choices - as a vegan it's completely overwhelming to decide what to try! I ordered the jackfruit tacos, and was so excited to try them. My son ordered the Mac Daddy burger and watermelon juice. Unfortunately the person taking my order didn't speak the best English and my tacos came out with chicken instead of jackfruit. I didn't have time for them to remake them. It was pretty far from the best vegan chicken I had ever had. My son loved his burger. The watermelon juice tasted a little off to us as well.
