Oh my! I am surprised by the amount of reviews this place has. This business needs more attention! Where should I start... Last Friday morning (9/23/22), my car wouldn't start on my driveway. It was a work day. I called my employer that I'll show up later due to this problem. I've literally called 6 auto shops in my area and Jake (business owner) was the only person that understood my situation and squeezed me in to the first in line on top of the other 10 cars they're currently servicing. The other 5 auto shops had less cars to service and wouldn't give me the time of day. I brought my car through a towing service and his team diagnosed my car. Jake gave me the option of hovering over the techs as they run their tests and despite me being a nuisance, all of them were not only friendly but also respectful as well as telling me what these tests mean and how it'll figure out the problem. All in all, it turns out there was internal engine damage. It's a 2008 Chevy Cobalt. I've owned the vehicle for 11 years and done zero maintenance (except for oil changes). Time for a new car. As I pulled out my wallet and asked how much I need to pay for the service, Jake hooked me up and said $0. $0!!! (Maybe due to sympathy or pity but I'll take it.) I'm just a stranger to him! I'm a Navy veteran. I've lived all over the country and has been to numerous auto shops and not one of them has treated me the same way as Jake and his team did. I now own a 2013 Nissan Juke. Got sideswiped by somebody and had my insurance company go through herbs. Super seamless from start to finish. They worked great with my AAA insurance adjuster so that there was minimal back-and-forth. And then most importantly the car looks flawless! You get what you pay for and there's a reason that when you look in the garage it's filled with immaculate hot rods and collectors cars! I was excited about having my 67 Mustang looked at by Herb's automotive. The reviews are great and people speak highly of Jake. I spoke with Jake on two occasions, sent photos and asked for a convenient time to come by - no rush, I've owned the car 30 yrs! Before I sent the photos, Jake advised what all may be needed w/o even reviewing the photos. He made a number of assumptions w/o seeing the car or photos. Jake suggested work/parts during our 2nd conversation that I didn't need, then he suggested they wouldn't "lower their standards" to work on my car. I'm certainly not asking them to compromise their product. I asked Jake to look at the car IN PERSON before making additional assumptions. In the end, I had to disconnect the call because Jake is rather pompous about the "half million" in work they have and their ability to be selective about their clientele. That's GREAT! Was refered to herbs because of thier specialty work on classic cars. Mark was very professional and knowledgeable. I booked a appointment to bring in my classic vehicle. Days before my appointment i get a call from this Jake guy trying to get me to take my buissness elsewhere. He goes on about how all his customers have deep pockets. When i walked in that shop by the looks of it i didnt expect to walk out of there spending nothing less than 10 too 15k and i was ok with that . wanted to get my vehicle dialed in correctly. Dont know why or how jake decided too make the assumption that my pockets were not deep. I wasnt going to post but i took notice to all the other Raza hes refused too work for and i decided to post a review. Plenty of other shops out there with just as much knowledge. read more

This review is way overdue, but every time I got out and look at my car, I'm reminded of the experience, and today I had enough, I usually don't complain, but long story short, I took the car in for what Jake called a "paint correction" to basically fix the paint job I had done at another shop, he quoted me $1500 for what ended up being a fancy detail job, but that wasn't what pissed me off, when I went to pick it up, he wanted $600 more than he quoted AND burned a hole in the left rear quarter panel, down to the previous paint (from the current green to the original beige) and when questioned about this, he replied "yeah, it happens" All this after him talking trash about the shop that did the original paint job, Truth is, they're not any better...avoid this place unless you're interested in over paying and getting your car back jacked up, now I have to take it to a third place to get the hole fixed read more

I came to Herb's Automotive last year for a front wheel alignment. They did an excellent job with my 2001 Nissan Xterra and it shows as of late June 2023! They did the alignment job back in early November 2022. Because they did the job properly and accurately through their computer alignment rack, I advised my son to take his own car there after he bought a new set of tires. I know that they specialize working on custom cars and seeing how they take care of their customers, custom cars or not, I recommend this friendly car repair service shop. I really wanted to like this place as they have good reviews and they're close to my work. But, alas, I've been disappointed both times I've been here; the second time I left feeling very taken advantage of. The first time, I let their actions slide, giving them the benefit of the doubt. I had brought my car in for tire balancing (as a recent tire replacement elsewhere left the car vibrating at higher speeds), and I also told them it sometimes had trouble starting in the morning. After dropping the car off in the morning, I didn't hear from them all day so I called later that day and they said apparently they had taken down my phone number incorrectly and had not been able to reach me. Despite that, they had gone ahead and done $400 worth of labor without any approval from me, including replacing the battery which we had not talked about at all. Fine, I assumed it all needed to be done and paid for the work. In terms of quality of work, when I drove the car, the tire balancing was not done well and the car continued to rattle at speed on the freeway. I brought it back and they took another look at it. After the shop had it for a few hours, the person I talked to said that it was fine and that the repair had been done correctly the first time. However, magically, the vibrating stopped entirely so clearly they balanced it correctly this time and it was not done well the first go around. The second, and last time, I took my car in all I requested was an oil change. They were prompt and had the car done that same day. When I went to pick it up I was shocked by the $255(!) bill. In addition to the oil change they had replaced the wiper blades ($25 labor, plus parts), and replaced engine and cabin filters ($50 labor, plus parts), all of which I (or anyone) can do, and which I had not requested nor approved, either verbally or in writing. When I confronted them about this the person I talked to said they generally will do extra things the car needs without consulting the customer. Uh, no, that's not how things work. They found the old parts (in the garbage?) and put the wiper blades and filters back and credited my bill $150. My advice to prospective customers is to get a written estimate, which they did not give me either time, and which I have since learned is the law in California. If, like me, you show up and they have tacked on a bunch of extra labor and parts know that you do not have to pay this and that what they have done is illegal. read more

Went in for a vehicle that I had been wanting too restore that was left too me and he was very clear as to what all was involved. Not having enough to do the whole job at this time I opted to do partial work and take it back for other work as I was able to save the funds. I am going to have to take my rating down a couple of notches. I refereed my boyfriend to Herb's because he needed his clutch & breaks fixed on his older truck a 1963 Chevy S10, he knew about my experience there so we thought all would be good. Though the estimate came in high (Around $2,300, my bf knows what it takes to do the work and would of done it himself but all his tools are in another State) we figured since they did such a good job with my Jeep & they had the truck apart that it wouldn't be worth it to take it all over to get other quotes. I was wrong, and my boyfriend now regrets the decision. The work should of taken about a week (Per the Shop), but ended up taking two. Then they had called and told him his truck would be ready by late Thursday, but he informed them he wouldn't be available since he had a flight later that day. We said we could pick up Saturday, but they are not open on the weekend so Monday it would have to be. Monday rolls around and we come by right when they open 7ish (AM), and the truck was not ready and apparently had not been put back together since someone decided to work on it over the weekend and whoever was there didn't know when it would be ready. So I let my BF borrow my car and had him drop me off at work, then they decided to call a couple of hours later and inform him that is truck was actually ready. The inconvenience, the lack of proper notice & information with the price tag it just wasn't worth it and boyfriend said for what he had paid he would never take another car their to get worked on. It is very unfortunate since I love supporting a local business, but not when they stick it to the locals... It was really disappointing. I must say, I do not know anything about my car. So ever since I noticed that my car shakes when I'm going over 70 in the freeway, I had to get it check. I had to get my tires aligned and balanced. With Yelp's help, I came to Herb's Automotive. It's a family run and we met Rodney. They test drive my car and after the whole aligning and balancing, the worker said it got better. However, Rodney said that I have to go back and get a new lower right bushing. His free quote is about $400. Called my dad about it and his friend fixed my car for about 25% of what Rodney was supposed to charged me. With a new lower right bushing with labor added. Herb's guys are knowledgeable but I was lucky enough that my dad's friend fixed my car. read more

Seriously, as good as it gets. The friendly service there was so pleasant and I could not have asked for a better experience. They are tucked away in an industrial area, but it's not hard to find once you've been there. They've been in business for quite a while and their shop is very clean. They have a random barber chair in their waiting room and I did not have to wait long for my alignment to be completed. They got me in right away and were extremely friendly. After I had made the drive from TX to CA I had my brakes serviced at a place in Manhattan beach that didn't do a good job (brakes were still making squeaky sounds!). Brought my car here and Rodney fixed my car, no more squeaking breaks, put in original manufacturer brakes AND for a GREAT price! His estimate was spot on and the car was ready for pick up within 4 days; they never left me hanging or wondering what was going on with the repair. Herb's is a diamond in the rough. Crappy mechanics are a dime a dozen. They will do shoddy work and charge you for top notch service. NOT AT HERB'S! When you drive up, there are always a few classic cars parked in the lot. Always a good sign. When you see one of these finished, it will make you drool. They do amazing work. Rodney will likely greet you when you walk in the office. This guy knows his stuff. He will not BS you, and will not try to offer you anything you don't need. Literally, "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!" I've been here twice. Once for an alignment, and once for some body work. Top-notch work both times. The alignment was explained, and transparent. Before and after results were shared. The body work was on the front-end. I came in with a claim from my insurance company, and they took care of everything as if I went to one of the "preferred" companies. (Read "Companies the insurance company gets a kick back from") While the car was in i got an update phone call and reassurance along the way. The car came out of the shop looking brand new! They even cleaned out the engine compartment! Not a necessary step, but total wow factor. THESE GUYS REALLY CARE ABOUT CARS! They treated my car like it was their own. Clean, detailed, and perfect when it came out. I could not be more pleased. I've moved away from the area, but will plan to take care of any service that's due when I'm around. I've had the privilege of taking my 76' Chevy K10 to Herb's twice now, and both times they have done a superb job. Their body work is precise, and their mechanical work is beyond perfect.
