Sunday afternoon and I'm craving some birria tacos. I have a coupon for Herby's so here we go at 3 pm. The parking lot is empty (not unusual for this time of day) and we're the only customers. Upon entering, the hostess/waitress seemed annoyed we came in, based on her demeanor. I had a sense to walk right out before being seated but I'm starving, so let's see what happens... Not many places charge for a basket of chips and salsa, but here they do ($3.99). I can't recall if that was the case last few times I was here. They were crispy and I did really enjoy the red salsa. I ordered two quesabirria tacos and one chicken taco since they were only available à la cart. The wife got two shrimp tacos. Mine came with a side of consommé that was mostly water and lacked flavor. I had to add salt to the tacos since they needed flavor that the consommé wasn't providing. The salsa Verde that came on the chicken was medium spicy and had a nice kick to it. It actually made me sweat, but in a good way. We ate pretty quickly because I just wasn't feeling a good vibe inside the restaurant. I asked for the check and presented my coupon. While getting checked out at the register, I asked for change for a $20 (for a cash tip) in the form of a 10 and two fives and was presented a 10 a five and five ones. I did not want the one dollar bills because I had several in my pocket already. Again, this waitress either just didn't care or I don't know wtf her problem was. No positive energy at all and left me wondering "why?" Your customers are your livelihood, treat them nicely and they'll keep coming back for more... Not sure we'll be back anytime soon based on the attitude. Food was good, not great. Sorry for the 3 stars, just couldn't "get it up" to 4. read more

We have been coming here for 27 years. How is this my first review of them! Probably cause I always get so excited We both got house margaritas. Tasty as always. They gave us waters first when we arrived As always I get the carnitas entree with rice & beans. I do love their salsa as it tastes fresh & flavorful. Hubby got the carnita enchiladas with mole. Never returned meal at a restaurant before this place. The mole was so old it looked like it was put on with a paint brush. $15.00 for a margarita that was small and not good. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that didn't serve free chips and salsa. Never going back again! They have a sign that points the wrong direction. Good clue not to go there! read more

While there are some great ones (the vendor El Cambirano on Front Street in Steelton for one) Herbys is not bad but it's not great either. I'm used to outstanding Mexican places in the south west. After hearing about this place for many years as having "authentic" Mexican food . . . I finally stopped in with a co-worker when we were grabbing lunch during a workshop. After finally finding it, it's in an odd location in a mostly residential area, we were seated quickly (there was only one other table in use). We had to order chips and salsa ($4) because they weren't complimentary. I can't remember what my co-worker ordered, but I opted for the Mole Carnitas Enchiladas ($13). It was pretty bland and didn't have any of those complex flavors you get with a really good mole sauce. It wasn't bad. Just not all that exciting. In the end, we both felt the food was acceptable but not something we would seek out for future lunches. I'm not sure what's supposed to be "authentic". Most of the food seemed to be Tex-Mex. Maybe the lengua (tongue) tacos are different enough for some people to think the menu is "authentic". Maybe there's a secret menu of more authentic dishes (I know some restaurants do that). Well let me start by saying we have been loyal customers at this establishment for the last 12 years it is sadly to say that Miss Maria is losing her touch and running the business the food that was served to us was not only cold but it was burnt no flavor the wrong order and you are told by your server that she can only do one check per table because she is too busy to write out multiple checks we asked if things were available that we did not see on the menu like the seven fish of the sea and the shrimp cocktail and she was instantly telling us that the shrimp is on the back of the menu but it was not the items that we were looking for as for napkins and was offered ice water at least three times doing our dinner but was never offered anything else and never got the extra napkins had to use napkins from the table behind us maybe they're spending more money on the entertainment which was a Live Mariachi band very entertaining but not what we were looking for we were looking for a well-balanced great authentic Mexican meal and was sadly disappointed so if you're looking for real good food this is not the place to go sorry but we will not be returning read more

Massive issues with how our dinner service went: 1. Waitress didn't know the menu specials backwards and front. 2. Food came out slow despite us being rushed to eat and leave since our reservation (which we did online) didn't register. 3. Food was bland...very bland. Margaritas were tasty, but that's about the only positive. 4. Waitress took my credit card and left it unattended for any random to pick up. 5. Waitress threw the bill down in a very impolite manner after we paid. Long story short, STEER CLEAR of this place. I wish I could give the restaurant 0 stars. Herbies is one of the closest restaurants to where I live, and when we moved here, I was super excited. They used to have an amazing reputation. Unfortunately, every time I've been in there during the week the place is absolutely dead. It looks like there might be one or two staff people on hands and that makes me worried about the quality and freshness of the food if they're doing such low business. The only time I was in there when it was super busy was when they had a live band which was intensely and Extremely Loud and I left after. An appetizer because I could not handle it. The food here is good. Overall, The salsa is a little more spicy than I would normally prefer, certainly on the hot side for my taste. Went with couple of friends for dinner to Herby's. My friends had been there before and had liked the food. Location is not good. The building itself is fine. Has its own parking and interior is nicely decorated. We ordered Nachos Supremos for the table. It was decent. I'm glad they did not mix in all the meats. Filling was divided. For my dinner I ordered Shrimp Tacos - way too salty! I think it was the sauce/cheese. I tried taking it out, but then was not left with much. I couldn't eat most of it. Due to the remote location and non impressive food, I doubt I will be returning to this restaurant. read more

Resting on its laurels, this once great Mexican restaurant, couldn't suck any harder. On cinco de Mayo they had a fixed menu. No complementary chips and salsa(7.99) no festive music. The three taco "dinner" with beans and rice was 15.99... wow. I guess if there was a day to price gouge it would be today. Good job. Three tacos, different meats, all tasted the same. But you get a tablespoon of rice and beans along with your tacos. If you want sour cream or hot sauce... it's a dollar. Jesus. Never again. Oh well. read more

This place is in the middle of bressler, and is pretty hard to find. the easiest directions are get off the swatara exit of 283 south, go towards eisenhower blvd, turn left then turn right on 441 you'll be on track, at the turkey hill turn onto main street. it has excellent mexican food, and has been open for many years. it has a full bar and also about 2 or 3 channels of spanish language programing, news sports, soap operas. i reccomend the soupa de cameron (shrimp soup) it costs about 4.50 but is pretty excellent. shrimp, cilantro, celery and corn. and my other favorite is bistek a la mexicana. and chicken en mole pablano. the menu is easy to order from and all the waitresses speak english very well. they have a large selection of mexican beer. you can shoose from entrees of chicken, beef or shrimp, and the manu has hte name in spanish and english, so if you want to be cool you can say it in spanish. appetizers are 1.50 to 14.95 for an entree. if you can find it you'll enjoy it. i always thought it was a little crowded inside, but its pretty comfortable. last time we had our whole family there and ordered everything update: after eating at the taco truck, tres hermanos & tacos mi tierra, i cant give this 5 stars, sorry herby's. read more

Limited selection on the buffet - roasted beef, chicken burrito, cheese enchilada, potato & onion taco on a fried flour tortilla, rice & beans - salad & salsa. First time we went, the food was decent. Went again, food was slightly less decent. Went a third time, had hair in food. Went a fourth time (for some unknown reason), had multiple hairs (my wife believes of a pubic nature) in food. Not going back. But all is not lost! Stumbled upon Tres Hermanos a mile away and found the best authentic mexican food around at a cheaper price. If you want authentic Mexican, go to Tres Hermanos. I was here about five years ago and really liked the food and atmosphere. Well I went here tonight and here's what has changed. Their was no one in the restaurant. The water tasted like blood. You are now charged for chips and salsa. When they brought out the cheese dip I could hold it upside down it was so cold. My drink was empty and after waiting about five minutes I went to find our waitress. I could see through the kitchen doors and she was sitting on a table reading a magazine! Super cute little spot in a secluded residential area of Harrisburg. The chips and salsa are great the salsa has a mild heat to it and the chips are homemade and warm! Save some money and go to taco bell. We went on polka night and some guy was playing an accordion. It was very loud and obnoxious! My tacos were chewy, my rice was dry, and my beans, which looked more like a pile of s#+!, were very bland. My girlfriend had the streak fajitas that came on a cold plate, but the table beside us was served the same meal on a sizzling skillet. The soda was flat and the menu states they charge additional after one refill. We also had a coupon that they refused to honor. The only thing authentic were the accents of the wait staff. It was hard to translate. We literally had to point to the menu to make our mean choices. Overall, it was a very bad experience. Best sit down tex mex in the harrisburg/hershey area. When comparing strictly food, im torn between tres hermanos and Herby's, but you dont get that "dining out" feeling if you go to tres hermanos. Both are more authentic and not of the don pablos variety. I usually ordered the carnitas or chicken mole. Good but not good enough... Not sure how this place got voted Harrisburg Magazine Simply the Best because it wasn't the best for me. Our waitress, though adorable, just didn't have the experience necessary for dinner service. When I asked for a "stack" of paper napkins since they didn't have cloth, she brought 3. Our dinners were lukewarm and not hot, so I was disappointed that my cheese chili relleno and tamal were not gooey but firm lumps of queso. The beans and rice accompaniments had good flavor but weren't hot enough. This plate could have used a 1-2 minute microwave blast. There was approximately 20 people in the restaurant, including us, having dinner, so the place was not crowded. We were herded to the front dining room to contain everyone in one area. Two waitresses were serving this area, so I felt the place was appropriately staffed. However, the bar service was exceptional. Our server was patient with our decision as to whether or not to have the jalapeno Margarita and gave us a sample to try beforehand. I would like to try Herby's again but wont' hurry back. read more

The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is because it's just so disappointing that it's never crowded. It makes for a gloomy atmosphere in an otherwise spot-on authentic Mexican spot. Chips and salsa are always freshly made but never refilled. This might be for the better as the portion sizes here will make you wish you wore your sweatpants. And it's so good I'll doubt you'll be able to put down that fork before you've said ay, caramba! Margaritas are delicious. My mother tried the mango the last time I was here. I have to say a lot of people I know swear by this place for Mexican food. I was skeptical at best...could this place live up to the hype. The short answer is yes! We decided to go for around three today. Not the busiest time of day, which in this case was a good thing. We got to enjoy the ambiance of Herby's. From the wall art to the music. It's a really nice restaurant, clean and welcoming. The waitress was friendly and attentive. The food was honestly excellent. My wife had their nachos as she's not the biggest Mexican food fan. I had one of the combination dinners. Let me state I've hit up most (75%) of the Mexican joints. I have had some good food and some okay food. Herby's food without a doubt lived up to the hype. I want to also state that I know some complain about the chips and salsa not being complimentary and that they aren't refillable. We were able to share one order with our friends that we ate with. You get a sizable order so I don't understand the need to complain. All in all I have to state again this place lived up to the hype. We will be back again. read more
