The flavors were rich, perfectly seasoned, and clearly made with care. For our main course, my son and husband both ordered the pork chop, and it was one of the best I have ever tasted. It was juicy, flavorful, and beautifully presented. My son's girlfriend and I had the duck ramen, which was phenomenal. The broth had deep, comforting flavor with just enough heat to keep it interesting. The service was excellent, attentive without being intrusive, and the overall atmosphere made it one of those meals you do not forget. If I lived in Charleston, this would be my go-to spot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is so cute and has a great outdoor patio with a fire pit and heaters.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food is really tasty too. It came with a horseradish sauce that complimented it perfectly. The mozzarella was tasty and the fries were seasoned to perfection. They are cooked in some sort of animal fat, likely pork grease, and seasoned with rosemary and other spices. We ate those so fast! read more

I went here for an after party event and absolutely loved it! Since we arrived at 9ish, we were only given drink and Small Plates menu, so my review is restricted to that. It came with arugula and what I believe was roasted squash--I highly recommend taking a little bit of each at every bite for a delicious experience! Herd is closing. However, I wanted to give them a review. The two times we came in, the food was good but the bar service was terrible. Bartenders are not very friendly, are SO SLOW to greet the people who sit at the bar. I've literally watched people leave because they take so long to even just say "I'll be right with you". Drinks are okayyy so I usually just get a glass of wine instead of a cocktail. Just bummed about the service here. The sustainably farmed 28-oz bone-in ribeye was amazing and cooked to perfection. Though closed at the time of dinner when I was there the front of the place also has a retail shop. This is my second time visiting Herd Provisions but this time I came for lunch. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I like the casual ambience of this place and it feels really open. They have outdoor patio and were surrounded by greenery to make it more cozy outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The waiter came right away as soon as we sat on our table and we ordered their lwf beef tartare which we think a bit different cos it has a cumin flavor to it. Not really our favorite but just really something different to what beef tartare we normally had. I ordered a scallops for my dinner entree and they were so good. It came with Brussel sprouts and potatoes and they both seasoned really well. My husband ordered their steak and it was so good and juicy. We also ordered their creamy mashed potatoes and their amazing roasted mixed mushroom. I had another incredible dinner at Herd! I love the welcoming, warm service here. Walking by their butcher counter makes me crave some meat!! For starters, we shared the Niçoise Field Greens. I ordered the blues burger (shh - you can order off the burger menu) & my boyfriend ordered the NY koji burnt onion stripsteak. We came here around 5:30 on Saturday night and didn't have a reservation but we were able to get seated right away on the patio. We live nearby and have been wanting to check this place out for a very long time! You do have to order all of your food at once. We started off with the poutine and it was super tasty! I honestly wish we had stopped there because the rest of our meal wasn't so good. My bf ordered the duck which was poorly cooked, had a super strong pungent sour and vinegar flavor and was too tough to eat. The server did come by once right after we got our food and we haven't had a chance to really eat so we didn't have any feedback at that time. We took two bites of the duck and moved on. We also had the sweet potatoes which had an over the top inedible sweet and salty flavor. They also had very vinegar tasting pecans and an off tasting sauce in the dish. Again, took a bite and gave up. I also ordered the pan seared fish which was also covered in vinegar and very hard to eat. We told the server that our food wasn't edible and only took a few small bites total. She said she wished she knew earlier. Another worker came by to offer us dessert but it had been 2 hours and we were tired. Then we continued to wait for our check. I had to get up and find a worker at the host stand to get our check. I have worked on the service industry for many years and hate to complain but this was so sad. I've never been so dissatisfied and disappointed in a restaurant in my life. The table next to us had issues getting the servers attention and had problems with their food too. Paid $140 for drinks and poutine. From the bad food to the bad service I won't be back. read more

We have been coming here for over a year and today's visit was very different from our past especially if you read our previous glowing reviews. Service was extremely slow on the patio during a 5pm early dinner with a relatively empty restaurant. We ordered the app special which was great and it arrived promptly along with our toddlers meal. We ordered the dry aged ribeye for dinner with the Brussels sprouts and beef fat fries. The steak was ordered medium rare and was undercooked to that temperature making it difficult to enjoy. The Brussels and fries were delicious as always. We also ordered the cheesecake and smores cake for dessert and the cheesecake was delicious. My main issue was the drinks and slow service. I had the rose and my husband and the smoke drink off the menu. The first two times it arrived the same the third was drastically different even to me the non drinker. We addressed with the server who was so sweet but the I'm assuming drink manager who did not introduce herself came to the table very hostile saying she made the third and the other two were incorrect and only offered to add mezcal. As someone who worked in restaurant previously I was shocked they would be so comabitjve and would have handled it with grace offering to have the other bartender remake and discuss how to have consistency moving forward. Our sweet server had it remade by the original bartender and it was the same as the first two. Very odd experience for a restaurant we once loved and will be looking for new go to spots in the area. read more

We've been searching for the perfect burger, and it might be the Herd Burger! My fiancé grabbed takeout and loved the interior - he also had a great experience with their staff and has been encouraging us to go back together and eat indoors. We got the veggie burger, herd burger, and Brussels sprouts. Everything was phenomenal! Because the toppings were so spot-on, even the veggie burger felt close to a classic burger. They both just had that indescribable burger-ness I've been searching for. I'm really picky about burger buns, and these buns weren't dry, were perfectly toasted, and chewy in the best way. The Brussels sprouts were well cooked (which is hard to do), and the sauce was delicious. I thought the prices were really good too. I don't think I'd pay an upcharge for the beef tallow fries again, but maybe I should give them another chance. I just didn't taste that much of a difference between them and normal fries. I live practically around the corner and have been at least 5 or 6 times, so while browsing through my yelp, I was astonished that I have never reviewed it before. So excuse me while I try to roll all my visits into one review. This is 1. a butcher shop in the front. I have yet to use that portion, so I can't speak to it - YET. And 2. an amazing neighborhood gem of a restaurant that can't be overlooked. Our most recent visit we shared the steakhouse salad - that didn't come with steak on it, but they were kind enough to bring us an extra side of steak to go with it and gnocchi bolognese that took my breath away. This was just heaven to bite into each and every time. We also managed to share a smores cake/pie dessert that was complete indulgence. The cocktail list is always ingenious and a lovely wine list as well. Other things you must eat - the crispy brussels, the poutine and the chicken sandwich at lunch time. What a lovely hidden gem in Hampton Park. It's so hard finding vegetarian friendly places around Charleston and we were pleasantly surprised to see they had some delicious veggie options on the menu. Nicely designed space with a cool bar, prompt and friendly service. We did run into some flies outside so we were relocated inside without a problem. My tilefish social was slightly on the deli side but was good once you removed the skin and just ate the flesh. The broth and vegetables were really good - butter beans were really good. I've been to herd before and had a wonderful experience some months ago. The food is excellent, as it was tonight the same. I was excited to return and did so this evening, but was unfortunately disappointed. It pains me to say there was a questionable lack of service and hospitality. I am a very understanding guest and have no problem being patient when staff are busy, but the restaurant was remarkably empty and staff did not seem interested in servicing their guests. I don't think I would have been compelled to say anything except for the fact at the end of the meal, we sat for 5-10 min waiting to cash out as our server sat in eye view eating dinner entirely disinterested in the status of her guests. Ultimately, I had to approach the bartender to do so. I really hope the restaurant can take this feedback and adjust accordingly. I do plan on returning and hope for a better experience. read more

They all ordered the Herd burger and I got us the charcuterie board and Brussels to share. Just like the last guy said in his comments, (summed up better by my friends and I). the burger was a joke. It was a hockey puck. A frozen piece of meat that you would find at a minor league bball game. I couldn't believe how bad it was... I would really like to hear what they use for hamburger meat. Okay, overall, I was disappointed with this dinner. It fell short of expectations. And given what my friends had told me about it, the price of the food ($$$), and the whole farm to table thing, I expected more. That said, the experience was not all negative by any means, so I will share both what I liked and what let me down. What I liked: The dry-rub chicken wings were phenomenal. These taste like the chicken came from the back yard, and were cooked perfectly-most on the inside, easy to pull off the bone, and crispy with a bit of spice on the outside. I wish I had just ordered them as my meal and didn't have to share the app with everyone else! They also make their own ranch, which tastes fresh, is full of flavor, and cools your tongue, which is good because the wings have a kick! I liked the $10 glass of Maision Phillipe Viallete, which the server recommended for it being light and slightly smokey. I loved when they accidentally poured and extra glass and gave it to our table for free (: The fries were also great. What I was disappointed by: the Leaping Waters Steak Frite was a miss. The market steak was so expensive, and came out over cooked and lacking in flavor. As far as a cut of beef went, I was simply let down. It was a big cut of meat too. The meal was mostly fries. Granted, the fries were great, but no vegetable side? Overall, the meal was not well balanced. I was also not impressed with the Brussels sprouts, and would pass next time. They are usually my favorite vegetable to order out, but these were a bit burnt. I also hated how high the AC was going. It made it hard to sit still and enjoy a conversation. I've bookmarked this spot for a long time and finally ventured out last night. The food menu is toothsome and appealing and the staff is friendly and quick. The biggest perk - private parking right across the restaurant! Can't get better access than that downtown! The front end of the restaurant sells meats, cheeses, wine, and some other odds and ends. Reservations are recommended but I was able to snag a spot at the bar. The interior is pretty cozy and loved their comfy high top chairs at the bar. The drink menu has a variety of drinks to appease all kinds of whistles. I really admired their beer menu and the flavor notes that accompany each brand. The drink prices are common for the Lowcountry so be sure to budget and expect to drop $$$ for it like $10 for a can of beer. Highly recommend this spot for yummy bites! read more

We visited Herd provisions for a ladies night out. We had reservations for a table for 6 and we were shown to our table promptly. The cocktail and wine list is impressive, I stuck to beer and wine, and the rose was particularly good and perfectly chilled. There was music in the patio which, was a little too loud to have a conversation and we had to scream across the tables at times. There was also a sort of cauldron fire-pit going on, which was more annoying that anything on a windy day when we were doused on smoke. I am unsure of the purpose of it since it was a warmer day and not really a fire pit to sit around.. We shared a bunch of food for the table and we got to try a good variety of dishes. My absolute favorite was the Brussels sprouts which were crispy and cooked very well with a lot of flavor. The Beef Tartar came next and it was a great dish cooked with delicious beef which is the specialty of the house. The not so amazing dishes in my opinion were the Goat cheese ravioli.. It lacked flavor and with it had more salt or garlic or something to make it a little less bland; and the burger, which was a good beef patty but it felt tiny compared to the size of the bun. It was just a weird bread to meat ratio in my opinion. The fries were legit though! For dessert we tried the tiramisu, which was excellent and a great portion to share amongst the group.
