Our first visit. Reviews looked good. We walked in on a Friday night at 7. Two wait staff at the host station were talking. They told us to take a seat anywhere and went back to their conversation. Customers were at half the tables and most of the remainder were covered with dirty plates. There was a high school football game that was about to start so we assumed that the pre-game rush had left and they'd get cleaned up ASAP. We found a high table that was clean but not large enough for two plates. Then moved to a larger table after two folks left leaving no cups or plates. That should have had us reconsidering our choice. There were abundant wait staff but an apparent poorly organized system of which tables would be serviced by whom. After 20+ minutes we had our waters dropped off. No menu so I went to the entry station and grabbed one. Another 20 minutes passed and a waitress takes our order. She placed our beverage order and we watched them being poured. She would be in the area moving frantically and then disappear for a long period of time. We picked up on the frustration of the other customers who were not enjoying themselves. After another 20+ minutes we asked her about the drinks. She responded with an "oh yes" and retrieved them. Another 35 minutes pass before the meals arrived. I did enjoy my perch dinner but my wife's "medium rare" steak salad was very well done, tough and loaded with gristle. The greens were in good shape. The waitress picked up on her disappointment, informed the manager, the salad was discounted. I understand the staffing issues that many restaurants face and hope that this isn't the norm. A few weeks ago five of us went out to a restaurant in our local community. The hostess informed us that they were short in the kitchen that evening and that there would be a longer wait than normal. We so appreciated the honesty and care of the customer's experience that we stayed. The wait staff checked in regularly, gave us updates and thanked us for our patience. read more

Had to ask for side dishes that were supposed to come with my meal. After all that our bill was incorrect. Witnessed several other parties walk out in frustration as well. Had a very disappointing experience at the restaurant today : ( The restaurant was understaffed and we waited over 2 hours for our meals. When most of us were served, one person was still without their meal. We were told it was almost ready, then we got a story that they didn't like the way it looked and had that order remade. The staff was trying, but consistently told us that they were short staffed, so I had some empathy. The owners should know exactly what their cooks and staff are going through and come up with a better plan to manage a busy restaurant. It is a shame, as the location is quite nice and could be a real gem to the community. read more

Today's visit was a solid 10! A very special occasion of my Mom's 95th Birthday. Due to covid and her compromised mobility she hasn't been outside of her home since Memorial Day...so on two levels...her willingness to venture out...just short of a miracle. Fish fry was her desire...Stonehouse was crazy busy...and so noisy by 5:45...we opted for HH. . I called ahead, booked a reservation, inquired on the phone on " how to" unload my passengers with limited mobility and was given a helpful set of instructions.. ( p.s....it was super easy, ramped all the way from the street, and close to the front door. So "easy- breazy". Two lovely young ladies met us the door promptly accompanied us to our table. We are on a family vacation to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This included my daughter in law and granddaughter visiting the area for the first time in their lives. We wanted to visit Escanaba to see a beach, at Ludington Park, and a view of Lake Michigan, more or less (of the bay). We wanted to find a nice, casual dining place for 5 adults and our five year old. My son looked online and suggested Hereford and Hops. They seemed to have a good variety of food and a location less than a mile from the park. When you walk in the sign asks you to wait to be seated. Our server greeted us and took us to our table. She took the beverage order and made sure the child beverage had a lid to it. The menu has a variety of options, including appetizers, dinner salads, pizza, pasta, and entrees and daily specials. It was Wednesday and the special was a half rack of BBQ ribs and a potato. They had fish and seafood options, and my wife and I chose breaded shrimp. My Daughter in law wanted the BLT with a side of in-house homemade potato chips and a dish of French onion dip. My granddaughter requested the children's burger and fries. All of the entrees came with a choice of garden or Caesar salad. I believe all of the dressing and sauces were made in-house. We also ordered fried cheese curds, with marinara, and potato skins. Once the order was placed, it felt like we were waiting for the appetizers for awhile. One son said, I hope they don't just bring everything at once. But the appetizers did arrive first and they were very good. The salad I ordered was the Caesar. It was chopped Romaine, shredded parmesan, and croutons. Our server said that the croutons were made in-house, and so was my wife's Ranch dressing, so I assume they made the Caesar dressing, too. The point is making items from scratch suggests either unique flavor or fresh quality. The croutons were toasted bread, the size of game dice, with no seasonings I could see or taste. The Caesar dressing lacked the tangy flavor of bottled dressing. My romaine lettuce was chopped okay but some of the ends were a little brown. I was glad I passed on the Chicken Caesar entree salad. My wife said her garden salad and ranch dressing was very good. It had other greens and no romaine. The entrees were all very good. The rib dinners were, reportedly, cooked perfectly. One person felt the sauce was perfect, the other said it tasted great but there was too much of it. My wife and I had breaded shrimp. Again, I assume they made the cocktail sauce in-house. And we both had the same reaction, which was it tasted great but somehow had no coating quality on the shrimp. I dipped mine and it came up looking like it was dripping tomato juice, but tasted great. My Daughter in law loved the BLT, and the taste of the homemade potato chips. She thought they were cut a little thick, but shared with everyone else, who thought they were fine. Everyone raved about the onion dip. We had a great meal, pleasant service, even if it felt a little slow at the start. I suggest you try H &H if you're in the mood for good food, casual atmosphere and reasonable prices. read more

Not sure why this place even receive one star. When I arrived I stood in line waiting to be seated but I first had to wait while a long conversation was being had about renting an apartment they even gave the person the application. She then had more questions to ask such as the credit part which he told her not to even worry. Since. I was behaving the people asking about the apartment I guess it wasn't a big deal for me to be seated to eat. They would get better revenue for renting apartments. I sat at the bar first, it was crowded so I asked for a table. The waitress quickly informed me that the "cook your own" section was closed... She was then discussing her job at the Mongolian grill area.... not quietly but basically said they only make minimum wage and the cooks $9/hour. I guess this would be true because of the service. No need for excellence. The food, let me say I wouldn't eat there again. The Mayo came out in packets by Sysco. They were sticky as if pulled from the kitchen junk drawer. The tomato was a Roma tomato, I guess they couldn't afford tomatoes because they can't pay their employees a decent wage. Overall, the burger was dry but I was hungry, so ate half. The fries, not sure where to begin. Overall cleanliness of the restaurant could have been improved. It's outdated, furniture very old and needs to have better control of Mongolian bar as people were using their hands to pick toppings. Lunch turned out to be great. We were concerned since the last time several items from the menu were not available and the service was non existent. This time, from the get go, our server was friendly and attentive. I had blackened salmon salad. A nice building on a nice part of the street. That's pretty much where the good comes to an end... You would figure that being a brewery, there would be some tasty beers on tap. Not necessarily the case. Even with a promising atmosphere, and giant fermenters on premises that gave the look of a legit brewery, this place fell way short. On a cold day in the UP, a few of us ventured out from our camp near Munising and made the trek down to Escanaba for some beer tasting. We immediately ordered the sampler, and much to our chagrin, found very few beers that fit the style they were aiming for. We also found most of the beer was undrinkable.... The wheat beer was absolutely gross. Smelled nasty, tasted nasty. While I didn't find either the Red or the Stout really that appealing, both my sister and wife enjoyed them with their lunches. I had the IPA, which was good and seemed to me to be the only beer that tasted like it was supposed to. The food was just as bad. I mean, I know what greasy, fried bar food is and this even fell short of that. Again, the sampler was pretty gross. Canned mushrooms and shrimp fried were absolutely disgusting. The chicken fingers and jalapeno poppers were decent. I'd order a plate of the jalapeno poppers again.... The burger was pretty dry and overall, weak. The girls split the Philly cheese steak and were satisfied, but overall, a very unappealing lunch. Even on a future brewery tour of the UP, I would not return to this Escanaba location.... read more

Interesting place to eat - there were various areas you could sit in. Several menus. My husband had Mongolian Barbecue which he liked a lot - lots of choices. I really, REALLY wanted to love this place... unfortunately, I can't say that was the case. The best thing about our visit was our waiter, Jamie-he totally saved the night. If he hadn't had such a great sense of humor and so pleasant, we would probably would have left before eating. Covid-19 is on the rise and they had a bus boy running around with NO mask on (until we said something), and one waitress that kept her mask under her chin or her nose, depending on when we looked. The mask actually looked like it was too big, and one of our party had a disposable mask to give to her. We gave it to our waiter for her, but she still didn't put it on. Our friend, who works for our health dept. back home, was seriously disgusted. We watched her serve the table by us with the tray up by her nose, breathing her unmasked germs on their food. Guarantee that if she were our waitress we would have walked out! The manager was nice enough, but looked like he was just keeping up and short staffed. The food was decent, there were sweet potato fries that came with a cinnamon butter sauce, that one of our party just LOVED! Despite the mixed reviews, we had an incredible experience! My husband had the Reuben (which was honestly the best I've ever tried and I'm a Ruben connoisseur) and I had the Blackened Salmon Salad, which was equally amazing (the balsamic dressing was delicious). The food I ordered was decent - whitefish with baked potato and salad. But everyone's food came out at different times and my coworker who ordered a pizza didn't get his food until the rest of us were completely done eating. I don't like that. Next time I will likely do the grill your own steak because it just seems like more fun!! The beer is decent, I recommend the Whitetail or the IPA (can't remember what it was called). We really enjoyed our experience here. We ate here with a group. They fed us all rib dinners which included half a rack of ribs, salad, and a baked potato. The ribs were moist and fell right off the bone. The sauce on them was not too spicy and not too sweet. It was just about right. Even the salad was good! It didn't contain any of that crappy iceberg lettuce. Our service was great. Even though we were a large group, my drink was kept full at all times, and they were great at keeping our empty plates cleared.
