Stellar wine tasting experience. The tasting spaces are beautiful and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable. I learn something new every time I go, and though I'm usually a red wine drinker, I always leave having added a new white wine to my favorites list. This time it was their BIO Riesling. The vineyard is following the biodynamic calendar, and relying on select flora and fauna to attract useful species and deter others, and using fairly interesting (and kind of wild!) fertilizing techniques. It sounds strange when described, but it's a cool technique they're trying to decrease the flow of unnatural substances into the lakes. And believe it or not, it results in some pretty delicious tasting wine! Make it a part of your next wine trail experience over on Seneca lake. read more

I came on a Sunday late afternoon and this place was packed (surprisingly with more kids than adults)! The only spot open was a corner in Michael's area. I'm glad he approached me quickly or I would have went down the street to try another place. I did the reserve tasting which got me 5 tastings for $5. Despite the crowd, Michael did a great job pacing the tasting, describing each one and never forgetting about me. He even threw in a double tasting of one wine just in case he forgot (of course I will not fight over more wine). Went home with a box full of their dry riesling (which is served at EMP) and their cabernet franc. I will definitely be back and hopefully during a less busy time. read more

We went first thing in the morning because we didn't have reservations. Being COVID time we were told there were no openings. We looked around at the empty tasting room and said that we'd be quick. The squeezed us in and we had a wonderful tasting that didn't feel rushed (though we rushed through so as to free up the table quicker). The stand out for us was the Gruner Veltliner. We did notice as we were leaving they started filling up but no wait at the door and plenty of open spaces...good reminder to be flexible with walk in guests. :) read more

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is a stunning winery to visit in the Finger Lakes Region. The tasting room and grounds are so well done. We had a lovely young woman (I wish I remembered her name) take us through our tasting. You could tell she was knowledgeable about wine and especially knowledgeable in Hermann J. Wiemer's wine and their history. She encouraged conversation and taught us a lot about the grapes. It was our first time in the Finger Lakes, so we had a lot to learn. At Herman J. Wiemer, you're given the option to choose between three different tastings so you get a bit of a personalized experience. I chose the standard tasting, but I appreciated that there was a seasonal tasting menu with their most recently harvested grapes for you to experience. I also love that they sell vines for you to take home and plant in your garden. I would kill it, so I didn't buy it but I'd never seen that before. read more

The Riesling flight was a great representation of the region--both stars in this review are for the great quality wine. Unfortunately our tasting experience on Sunday was wildly underwhelming. The employee poured all our glasses at once, told us virtually nothing about the wine, then walked away and never came back. We were there for maybe 8 minutes then left the tasting room severely disappointed. We purchased a few bottles (again, great Riesling) but after leaving we wished we hadn't. We've done probably 100 wine tastings all over the country (from Napa to the Finger Lakes and everywhere in between), and this was our most disappointing experience. The tasting room didn't have much staffing, but that is typical; the employee may have judged as for looking young, but had she spent more than 20 seconds with us she would have learned that we are wine collectors on our first (of likely many) trips to the Finger Lakes, and the winery lost potential members/customers that day. read more

Hands down, still the best Riesling in America. The name has changed (they can no longer call the Dry Riesling "Johannisberg" due to anal Germany DOC restrictions), but the quality is the same, or better. One of the classier tasting rooms, and it was blissfully quiet when we came in (a concert at Glenora drew some of the weekends crowds away). My absolute favorite winery in the Finger Lakes region. They have an open, spacious tasting room with lots of friendly, knowledgeable staff to answer any questions and to give you pours. Their tastings are $5 for 5, and extra if you want to try the reserve Rieslings. I tried their Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and Rieslings. I was thoroughly impressed with each of them. If you love refreshing, clean tasting white wines that can range from semi sweet to dry - you won't regret coming here! They definitely have something for everyone :) read more

First let me say this is a gorgeous winery with really great wines. But we had the worst tasting experience of our 6 wineries visited that day. We were shuffled into a back room with 3 tables set up for tastings. It was in one of their rank rooms which is fine but the room was dirty and there were hundreds of fruit flies. They surrounded our glasses, faces, the bottles of wine our tastings were poured from. The staff knew this was an issue because even before we began, he apologized. They should have taken the tastings from this room because of it but they didn't. The person pouring our tastings consistently gave me much less than everyone else in my group. I had less than one sip every single time. While this winery has great wines, what a terrible tasting experience we had. I would not return, especially when there are so many other great wineries to visit. read more

One of my favs of the wineries my girlfriends and I visited over the weekend. Dottie was extremely knowledgeable about the history of both the history of the vineyard and the wines we were tasting. I found we got more info here than any of the others. She took her time with us, even explaining the grafting process. Interesting too, that here I liked the dry Reisling the best, while at Belhurst I found I liked the semi-dry the best, as far as level of sweetness vs. dryness. Hermann J. Wiemer is when rustic chić meets modern debonair. Our wine baristo, Vince, was a wealth of knowledge. You could tell how passionate he was for his craft. What I did not know was that this winery was known for their dry wines. This raised a flag for myself and a friend because we prefer sweeter white wines. That was no issue for Vince as he accommodated us by pouring tastes of what he thought we might enjoy. Boy was he right! Run, don't walk to meet Vince. This was our last wine stop of 5 wineries in 3 days and man - it should have been first. Make a reservation in advance. I was super lucky that after trying two different days, Jenny was able to fit us in due to a cancellation just before we were leaving the area. Between three of us, we tried nearly every offering and if you're a wine snob (I am), I'll tell you I was starting to worry I wasn't going to find many in FLX I would even drink. But Wiemer changed my mind and I walked away with 6 bottles: Riesling Semi-Dry (do this first just so you have a baseline), Riesling Magdalena and then the Gewurztraminer. Now I would have bought more but found out some are distributed outside of the winery so I can buy in the city. All of the Rieslings (except I didn't try the Late Harvest) were really outstanding, and the Chardonnay was super soft and mellow. I would have guessed it was kept for a short time in American oak, but if you blind tasted most of these whites - I'm feel confident even varietals you think you don't like, you'd find you did. Now my mom and her husband were with me and they are also big wine drinkers and my mother watered the trees with all of her reds and rose, so personally I wouldn't recommend the reds (at any of the wineries honestly.) LOVED Rhett - god he is Zack Galifianakis funny. We had such a fabulous time with him. If you like to have a good time, you want him to wait on you. Make this an absolute MUST stop. read more

The staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and engaging with everyone in the group. The wines are absolutely spectacular. Honestly, I haven't been to "bad" winery in the Finger Lakes, but this one stands out as exceptional. From my first contact with them over the phone to the day of our tasting they were professional and courteous. I made an appointment for a tasting, someone was there to greet us as we exited our vehicle, we were escorted inside, shown the facilities, and we had our sommelier waiting for us. They had a personalized (with our names on it!) tasting menu. Also, I explained my 92 year old grandmother would be tasting with us and they graciously had a chair ready for her and were able to accommodate her needs without us asking twice! The wine is just as exceptional and the service. This place is truly five stars. read more

This was one of my favorite wineries during our two days at the Finger Lakes. The staff is extremely friendly and outgoing, introducing you to the wine and answering any questions. They have several options for wine tasting, but we chose the $8 tasting, which came with 6 different wines. We also were given the flexibility to swap one out for another wine we liked more. This place is a must if you're doing winetasting in the region. They had a bunch of quality Rieslings even for people who aren't super into rieslings/white wines. All the wines they had were very balanced and well done. Our favorites were the Dry Riesling, which is actually semi sweet, and the Rosé, which is made with pinot noir grapes, and that's coming from people who aren't huge rosé lovers. If you like sweet wines, you'll definitely enjoy 3-4 of their Rieslings as well. This seems like a must in the area and was one if my top two favorites in this area out of 6 (also Shalestone was on our top 2, but they do reds)! read more

Weimer is an "every time" stop as well. They are known for their high quality whites and my husband and in-laws both absolutely love this place. First, I'll say that the tasting is a bit pricier than most places in the area. There were three pre-determined flights, starting at $6 and going as high as $12. (They only had three reds and they were all in the $12 tasting, so I declined.) The wine, also, is a bit pricier when you choose to make a purchase. That said, for people who drink white wine (not myself) it is considered spectacular. My husband and in-laws both labored over what they were going to take home. They also sell a smaller assortment of wines at Buffalo's Premier Group wineries. read more

Rented a lake house very close to this vineyard, so had to try it out. The ground look great, the shop was clean. A few selection of flavors to choose from. Spoke to someone who was helpful. Hands down this is one of the best wineries of the Finger Lakes in upstate New York State that you've never heard of. Hermann J. Wiemer actually tries to make it be that way too, which is the most surprising/shocking thing about it. They are not on any tourist wine trail map or apart of the wine festivals or the wine passes or even the official wine trail website. However, ask ANY wine expert that knows finger lakes wines, and they will name HJW, and if they don't.... not an expert. For it was just named one of the top 100 wineries of the year by Wine and Spirits Magazine! They are located on the western side of Seneca lake, and it's just one small sign on the road that states you've reached Hermann J. Wiemer winery. The first time when I was trying to go there, I missed it, and was actually looking for it! *As a side note, there are no buses or limos allowed at HJW and groups of 4 or bigger should definitely call before hand.* They don't have a large tasting room, and they can't accommodate large numbers. When you enter through the sliding door, you walk right into the small retail shop, followed by the smaller tasting room. We actually had our tasting atop of a wine barrel which was unique and intimate. Tasting price was standard, $3 or $4 for 5 or so tastings. They do have reds which are very decent, but HJW is critically acclaimed for their whites. The tasting was just the server and two of us, so I was about to ask some questions. The wine-maker doesn't want to make HJW so commercialized like a Bully Hill. He is fine where his production quantities are at, and it will most likely stay there. Which makes tasting this wine feel very special. I instantly fell in love with their 2008 Semi-Dry Riesling. Once a dry white drinker, but now a cab or merlot fan, this definitely suited my pallet very well. The prices at HJW are not outrageous even after hearing how they cap production. My bottle was only $17, and you might want to hit up the discount on buying 6 bottles like we did!! Leaving HJW, I cherished the small winery feeling I got, and my pallet loved being privileged to one of the best wineries in America!!!! read more

The tasting room and buildings in general at Hermann Wiemer are impressive - very fancy. As such, and being a famous winery, it can be quite crowded even in off times. The whites were good as expected, reds did not impress, even compared to some of the other wineries in the area. The staff were a little flustered (understandably) with the number of people to serve and also answering questions. Worth a visit but wasn't the highlight of my trip. read more

This is hands down my favorite (and the best, IMHO) winery in the Finger Lakes. The ambience is unbeatable - the tasting room is classy yet comfortable, with a sunny patio where they also serve wine by the glass. The tasting fee is very reasonable considering the quality of the wine - $8 for the flight, and $5 for the regular tasting. I think the flight is the way to go - three of the four wines are their high end reserve bottles ($30) and you get to compare the Rieslings from their different vineyards. The employees are all super nice and incredibly knowledgable. They recommended and let us taste some additional wines as well after we'd finished our flight, and gave us some great suggestions on other places to go. One of the co-owners, Oscar, is always around on weekends, and happily gave us more info on the flight and a tour of the new addition they added last year. If you like Rieslings, Weimer is THE place to go. The wine is just unparalleled. read more

He taught us about the region while we sipped on dry Rieslings(would have said this was an oxymoron before but I stand corrected). Love this winery so much! Of the 20+ wineries we've visited around Seneca, this is my favorite by far. My husband and I came here on our mini-moon last year and made sure to return with our friends this year. It was as good as we remembered. The Late Harvest Riesling has got to be one of my favorite wines ever. We're partial to the Brotherhood Riesling (hey, we got married there!), but this is possibly even better.
