I heard great things about this place so I figured I'd give it a try for mine and my husband's anniversary. Please don't order the porkchop. It would be good but the chef was way too salt heavy. All I tasted was the over powering salt (and I love salt) I couldn't eat it. 2 stars only because of the server Abby and creme Brule. Next time I'll spend a little more and go to bourbon steakhouse. I took my husband there they asked if we were celebrating anything I said yes his 40th birthday and coast guard of 21 year retirement. The staff went out of their way to give him a personalized card! Ok so here's the deal. I love your restaurant. I love the idea of a steakhouse in Hermitage. Trying to provide constructive criticism and not just blast you. I think you are 2-3 stars at this point and here is why: Salad bar is good but not much better than Sizzler in the olden days. Add more lettuce options. Chopped hearts of Romaine may appeal to some but not to all. Add some spring greens, spinach and maybe some baby arugula depending on space and I recognize that as a barrier. Other than than that the toppings are on point. Lets move to the appetizers and entrees...I would not suggest having your servers lead with cheese bread as the appetizer. My suggestion is lead with something like a charcuterie tray or some sort of dip. My thoughts are here those are more fun to eat than greasy cheese bread and though theyre probably not...feel healthier. Ordered a few steaks the other night....Unseasoned and felt like just steaks grilled. Put some flavor into your beef. I know and recognize it is incredibly hard to run a restaurant right now with food shortages, staffing concerns etc. Your steaks are way overpriced for what we are receiving on the plate and probably testimony to trying to overcome these obstacles. Eaten at steak houses around Nashville and beyond and your steaks are priced higher than some of these that have been a lot better than what I was served. Salt and pepper go a long way. Again Im just trying to be constructive....I am in full support of your restaurant and want to see you succeed as a local small business...just need some more concerted effort from the kitchen and wait staff. Please dont take this as a negative review rather constructive criticism. I WANT you to be great! I want to dine with your team again and have that kind of experience in my home town. Completely disappointed. The best part about this place is the live music that is played in the lobby to keep patrons entertained while waiting for a table. I enjoyed my food for the most part. That is, the food that waitress actually bothered to bring to the table. We ordered two appetizers--neither of which were brought to us during the thirty minutes we waited for our entrees. Also missing were our drinks. We did not receive our drinks until our entrees came. Yes, that's right--we had to wait 30 minutes just to get a beverage. When we finally got our check, we were quickly notified that we could not use the $50.00 restaurant.com gift certificate we purchased, because we did not spend enough on food, and alcohol could not go toward the total. Thus, although our bill $150.00, and we received horrenduous service, we were just out-of-luck on using the certificate we paid for. When we inquired with the manager to see if she would honor our coupon, or a portion thereof in light of our terrible service, she flat out denied our request, and quite simply didn't seem to give a sh!t that our experience was terrible. Needless to say, I won't be going back to Hermitage Steak House, and I have made it point to tell many (far more than the usual 12 people a dissatisfied customer tells about a bad experience)people to stay away. This unassuming gem of a place has always been my rock-solid fallback plan when I hit a wall on where to go that is quick and casual, but has a great price/value proposition. There is typically a wait on a weekend - particularly after 6:30pm, but there is usually good live music (solo guitarist) and generously poured drinks available to pass the time quickly. First off, NO ONE beats their salad bar! From the crisp lettuce and toppings to the smoked oysters and dressings, everything is fresh, colorful and packed with flavor. Several times, I've made my entire meal with their salad. It's that good and that satisfying! Then, their steaks are typically an excellent cut! The ribeye has always been excellent and the filets are tender and full of flavor. - always cooked to order. (As an aside, I miss that they no longer wheel the meat cart tableside for you to see them cut your steak!) All for quite a bit less that you'd pay at the higher profile (and more expensive) steakhouses. Quality and value for your money! Who can argue with THAT? Hermitage has so few really good places to enjoy a great meal. This is absolutely high on the list. read more

Old-school steak house with pioneer charm and the best salad bar in Tennessee. We were headed back to Knoxville from the Nashville airport (BNA) and we were looking for a nice place to get a steak off the beaten path. So we headed out to historic Hermitage and hoped we'd run into something. We passed all the crappy corporate places: Outback, Applebees, whatever. We had almost given up when we turned on 70 and discovered this hidden gem. This place reminded me of some of the old school midwest steak houses you'd find in resorts of the 70's and 80's. All that was missing was the relish plate! The Salad bar is unparalleled. Seriously. Everything was fresh and delish. Mixed salad greens, chilled plates, pickled everything from beets to okra, fresh tomatoes, eggs, mushrooms, and at least 20 other great toppings, croutons, ground pepper, and crackers. We had a shrimp cocktail, ahi tuna appetizer, and an 8 ounce filet (to split). The shrimp was fantastic. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and was supple with a touch of springiness to the bite. The ahi tuna was fantastic. I've never had it like this before. It was seared on the edges and then sliced thin, but it wasn't blood red. Instead it was very pink and juicy, just barely raw. The outside was encrusted with sesame and a dark sauce that had balsamic vinegar, peanut sauce, and wasabi. It was incredible, original, and impressive. Finally, the steak was perfectly prepared rare as we asked for it. The meat was warm and very pink in the center. Bites fell away from the knife to the fork with little effort, and the marbling was just right. This was a serious cut of meat. And the Fillet came in 6, 8, 10, and 12 ounce portions. The home made roll that came with the steak was sensational--fluffy with a crust, a little chewy. The bar had an ample list of wines and liquors, though we didn't have any since we were driving. You gotta love a place that serves Cutty Sark. The prices were moderate. Meal for 2 (plus my 12 year old daughter had chicken strips and fat steak fries, which she loved) was about $60 plus tip. We go to Nashville at least 4 times a year, and this is going to be our steady place to eat before the ride back from now on. Get there early, or there's likely to be a wait. we got there at 8 on a Friday night, and waited 20 minutes. People kept coming and for the next hour there was a wait to sit. The service was quick, the waitresses attentive, and the food came out of the kitchen with proper pace--after we finished our salad and each course as they brought them. Enjoy! read more

I know, someone who doesn't eat meat reviewing a steak house. Spare me. Visited this place out of obligation. Very 70s vibe throughout the restaurant with features that certainly haven't been updated in my lifetime. Really stale feeling -- the whole restaurant is just dark and not in a good way. Mostly older clientele, which is fine, as long as you're able to get your customers served before they pass away... I went with the salad bar ($11). I was able to fill up on chickpeas, edamame, carrots, and plenty more. I wish they'd had a vinaigrette, a gloppy raspberry dressing was the closest thing. I picked up the oil/vinegar shakers which were...oily feeling. Sick. Unfortunately on my second trip, they hadn't restocked many of the items. I also ordered a side plain baked potato ($2.50) to go with my salad bar, which was hot and very large. Our service was decent and we had a good time. Came in from Denver and met local friends here. I bucket list steakhouses around the country. Reasonable prices found here. Order your ribeye blackened(Pittsburgh). It was quite good. Salad bar was clean and quite wonderful. Very high quality ingredients as well. Only complaint- bad scotch selection and a very cranky and very indifferent bartender with a beard. He cheered up a bit when I tipped him $5 and put a lime in my Scotch and soda.... Don't dress up to come here. Nobody else does. Most of the clientele here wears ball caps and flannel shirts to the dinner table. Not a place for a quiet dinner either. But the steak was a B+. The price was great. Step up the bar. The bar experience is a D-. Hire a bartender with manners and a decent Scotch list that understands its sacrilegious to put a lime in Scotch. read more

Amazing meal. Got to sit in a cozy booth hidden from everyone for date night. Beautiful salad bar. Timing on delivery of the steaks was spot on. We got to enjoy our appetizer and salads. Have been for dinner about 4 times and the steaks are always perfect and taste wonderful. They have huge jumbo prawns and those are awesome. Order your steak meal and then add the prawns as a side. They way over charge when you order it with one of their steak and shrimp combos whole also shorting you on the steak size. Surely more people have noticed this and have figured this out. For dinner the salad bar comes with it. It a great bar, but Ruby Tuesday still blows theirs away. Skip the Sumday Brunch. I wondered why it was not busy. Attached is a photo of my order, the Steak Benedict. When it came out I was like where's the beef? Haha. Literally each cut of steak was at beat an ounce each. It did not even cover half of the English muffin. I did ask about it and was told that is the norm, and the server did bring me another piece, so all in all. I got about 3 oz of steak. I added the salad bar which was an expensive $8 add on. Entirely too high for their salad bar. So my 3 oz steak Benedict with potatoes and salad was $22. Save your money and go to brunch elsewhere. I dont think they will be open for brunch much longer unless they step it up. Overall it's a good place to eat and friendly staff. Go for dinner, skip the brunch, and remember to order your steak dinner and then add the prawns, the surf and turf option they are giving you fewer ounces of meat and quadrupling the prawn price. If you order right you can get a ribeye that is 4 more ounces and the prawns and save around $6 For example if you order the ribeye and prawn combo on menu you get an 8 oz ribeye and 3 prawns for $42. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this restaurant is. The steak (rib eye) was amazing as was the salad bar. They also have great fried pickles that aren't too salty like usual. The only concern is that the menu is a bit pricey. There are very few options under $20, although every meal does come with the salad bar. The 8 oz rib eye (my choice), fried shrimp, pork chop, and a chicken breast option were under $20, and the salad bar alone is $11. I wouldn't mind getting just the salad bar, myself. It's got a large selection including oysters and anchovies. The service wasn't bad either. When our waitress first came to the table, she seemed to be giving us the look of death like she'd rather kill us than serve us, but after the first time she had a 180 degree attitude change and was very pleasant. The food came out very quickly, both the appetizer and entrees. Just make sure you don't go too late because they start closing down the salad bar about 30 minutes before their official close time. read more

This place was a great find! After touring The Hermitage, we were looking for a good steak. This fit the bill The atmosphere inside was very nice with a nice little bar/ lounge area that wasn't too dark or too light, but just right. The hostess was very pleasant and seated us right away. The food was very good! Starting with the 40 item salad bar. It kinda seemed out of place in a nice steakhouse, but allowed my salad to be carefully handcrafted just for me! The ribeye steak was perfectly marbled and cooked exactly as requested. The grilled shrimp were very large and tasty. The loaded baked potatoes were large and excellent, as was the mushroom appetizer. The only thing that knocked it down to 4 1/2 stars for me was the server we had. She was very efficient and fairly attentive. Her only issue was she seemed a little stiff and formal, especially for this setting. However, the manager or owner stopped by our table and engaged us in a pleasant conversation as she inquired about our meal and experience. My boyfriend and I decided to try for NYE. We did not have a reservation so we expected a wait, a that arrived about 10 minutes after us was told an hour. It took an hour and 45 minutes before we were sat. If we had been told that originally we wouldn't have waited. Then after waiting an hour we kept being told "a couple more minutes"...so we waited...45 more minutes. Ridiculous. And st that point most other options we had were closing. We sat and it was half the menu if that from online. I got fried shrimp...6 shrimp and 5 asparagus (yes, 5 asparagus) for $23. $3 uncharged for those 5 asparagus. The shrimp were fine, it's fried shrimp , they couldn't do grilled apparently. My boyfriend got the ribeye, medium rare. It was tough and had no flavor with quite a bit of fat. He ate it bc it was 9:45 and we were hungry and tired. But he said the fries were good ha! Service was ok at best. Took forever to get a glass of wine and a coke. Oh-salad bar...I don't understand the raves about it. Mostly iceberg lettuce with ranch and shredded cheese. Nothing special. Meal Was not worth the $80, and definitely not worth the wait, very disappointed. Will not go back. They did bring us "bubble bread" on the house which was a nice gesture but it's covered in cheese, with blue cheese, neither of us like. Was one of my favorite places to eat. Last night I went at 5 PM as they first opened with a group of friends. i ordered the ribeye medium rare as I have done in the past. When it arrived after watching several tables after us being served and I cut into it, it was cooked med well. When I finally got our servers attention I explained I requested med rare and it was overcooked. He took it to what I am assuming was the manager on duty at the time. She brought my plate to me leaned down in my face- without a mask and told me that the steak was cooked med rare. It was just the lighting and I couldn't tell it was med rare. She actually wanted me to get up out of my seat to go into different lighting to prove it was cooked to what she called med rare. I have NEVER had anyone ever argue and request me to walk away from my table for a manager to prove a point. I refused to do that and she set my 32.00 med well steak plate down and sash shaheed away content with herself. Had I not been with three friends I probably would have left the uneaten steak with the bill on the table. I am very upset with the lack of concern she showed. We are a regular customer at this restaurant and always rate it a 5. But we were very disappointed in our Mother's Day meal today! Salad bar was exceptional as usual! 2 of us got salmon and it was good. However, our sons both ordered the filets cooked MEDIUM. Both were cooked medium well but closer to well. Our Server asked if there was "anything you just can't eat?" Lol! We said we shared our salmon so no one starved! She said she would let the manager know but it was not her fault because she turned our order in for both to be cooked medium and agreed they were not. They were very busy today and obviously manager had not heard from the server about our experience because as we left I mentioned something to the manager and she just said "oh I'm sorry!" Not what I would have expected for a $200 meal but especially for a customer who considers themselves regular and even takes large groups to this restaurant. In town for the eclipse august 21, visiting Nashville. Went to the actual Hermitage (7th US president Andrew Jacksons home). Was casting around for a place to have a nice meal and saw this name and decided to give it a try. Location is ok along a busy commercial strip Free standing building on its own with own parking , nice because not congested or busy like a large mall or strip mall Building looked like a log cabin Inside was clean and quiet. Some busy places have a run-down institutional look and feel . Some of them smell like disinfectant and even mildew... like a busy Longhorn steakhouse NOT this place. This place is more refined and upscale. The prices were a little higher. But still competitive. Expect to pay 20+ for a 12 oz ribeye. Beautifully laid out extremely fresh and varied salad bar Had filet mignon and ribeye Service was courteous, quick Steaks were juicy and cooked just right. The Hermitage has always been my favorite choice whenever I wanted excellent ambiance combined with superb food, but to rely solely on tradition, as I recently discovered, is foolhardy. My last three trips to this now defunct restaurant, were just that: terrible. Aside from my embarassment to my friends and family who accompanied me, I could not believe how far the quality of their meats had deterioriated. The rib eyes, especially the 8 oz, was reduced to a minute steak one could purchase at any 3rd rate restaurant: thin, leather like, not marbled and cooked to death because of the lack of thickness. To add insult to injury, when contacted, the owner/manager was neither helpful nor compassionate. After all these years of patronage, I vow never to return to this business. read more
