Heroes Golf Course is a place you can get outside to swing the clubs (and now play pickleball on new courts) -- outside of having a space to hit a golf ball, the rest of the course is a letdown. Tee boxes are turf mats on concrete slabs (which I understand -- tee boxes would be torn up if it was true grass). The "greens" are outrageously bumpy, with patches of dead grass on every one. You'll be lucky to make more than one putt longer than five feet in a round. Overall, I can't knock Heroes for providing a green space for being to whack around a golf ball in the midst of LA, but to me, it's certainly not worth $25 to play a not well-manicured track. If they fixed the greens and made them more like regular golf greens that roll true, this would be a lot more bearable. read more

This golf course has some problems with customer service and could be more welcoming to families. While my husband paid the walking fee for my 7-year-old who likes to hit a few shots with us, I was bothered by an employee's tone when he questioned why she had clubs with her at the tee box. We weren't bothered about the extra fee, but his approach, especially since she wasn't playing a full round. Later, my husband had an extremely unpleasant interaction with another person at the course, either an employee or a volunteer. He overheard my husband discussing a previous incident where he was threatened with being kicked out for putting with a wedge. He then proceeded to yell and curse at my husband, dropping f-bombs in front of my young daughter, and threatened to personally kick my husband off the course if he ever saw him putting with a wedge again. This kind of abusive behavior is unacceptable, particularly at a place that should welcome families. I hope the course can improve its customer service and create a more positive experience for everyone. We would never come back to this place and it's unfortunate that our daughter's coach Carlos (he is outstanding) teaches at this place. read more

The course conditions are fine. The problem with this place is they have no organization. The pro is frequently on the course and takes around 20 minutes to finish a 100 yard part three hole. They do not have a set teatime schedule so expect to wait an unexpected amount of time on each hole. read more

I have been to this course about 10 times now. Every time I have been there's been an issue. Very small course, great for short game practice. But the staff is always so grouchy. Makes it hard to play and focus in a hostile environment. I had to start at hole #4 because it was backed up at the first hole. And when I got back to hole number 1 , one of the employees was yelling he's gonna ban me from the course on my back swing. Made me angry so I just left. the Course is only good for me because it's close. Many other courses around that will treat you better, and you won't have to hit off mats In a high stress environment. While you're playing it feels like they are trying to get you out. And as soon as you're done they are begging you to come back. read more

This place is the tits, my good bud tmay booked a tee time for 1045 Saturday but accidentally did Friday and the homie up front said "no worries I got you" and we ended up having a great day of golf. Simple golf course good for beginners and it supports a great cause! The Bandini Foundation, a nonprofit veteran's job training facility, runs the course and offers complimentary clinics for veterans to play. It's $13 for 9 holes which are mostly par-3s. Pay attention to the directions and people on the course as it can be tricky to see where the next holes are (ex. hole 4 and 5 are exactly parallel to each other). There's also a community vegetable garden where you can pick fresh vegetables from spaghetti squash to grape tomatoes. As you drive up, keep your eyes peeled to the signs as otherwise the GPS might take you pass the main entrance. Enjoy! read more

I give this a four star rating because 4.0 in my book is fantastic. I would give it a five if it was an 18 hole golf course, but I find it to be fantastic for all of those looking for a place to call a refuge and refreshing to life and all the reasons the great outdoors is the place to be. The foundation that started this, are heroes themselves and I applaud and celebrate you. Playing here and doing all the things that a person can do for such a low cost and a great reason to be outside, bravobravo I recommend anyone to come and experience The heroes golf course. Great 9 hole course for veterans to learn how to swing a golf club! Take a lesson Monday mornings with Vietnam Marine Veteran Carlos Rodriguez starting at 0830 on his dime. Bring proof of service and get clubs and balls for free with as many tees as needed. Very encouraging environment for beginners! Thursday is maintenance day and can be a bit more congested, but these guys really try to take care of the green. Quirky golf course. Short 9 hole par 3 golf course. Open 7 days, sunrise to sunset. The course design is a little strange and it is hard to navigate the course. An example is that once you have played hole 4, you have to walk back and the tee box for hole 5 is next to the 4th. Located in the large VA hospital complex. It is well sign posted. If you've got a good golf game or enjoy using your driver to smack a ball 200 yards down a fairway, this course is not for you. If you're new to the game or a hack, this might the course for you. I'm both of the latter, so this course is perfect. It is certainly not the nicest course, in fact as other reviewers have said its a bit rough around the edges. But its the perfect place to practice your short game. Plus it doesn't get any cheaper than this place to play 9 holes. $12 bucks for 9 holes. I like this course. I've played a lot of the par 3 courses around town and this one is cool. Sure, it's a bit pricey. $12 for 9 holes is on the high side. I went on a Monday morning and it was empty. Yes, you hit off the mats but that's normal for the smaller courses. But it's quiet with interesting greens. The longest hole was about 175 yds which is unusual for a pitch and putt. The different levels of the course make it fun. I'll go back again. read more

Played this course today with a friend and it was a blast. Now I had absolutely no expectations going into this, but if you're expecting something well-groomed, this isn't the place. It's a little rough around the edges, but is just really fun to go out and practice your short game. You can tell that the people who work it love the place and really work hard to take care of it as well as their resources allow. I think the longest hole was marked 170 or so, but overall it's a very short 9 hole course. It was completely empty because we went on a Tuesday night, and it was $12. You really can't beat that, especially in the immediate LA area. I think the closest best thing is Westchester night golf. I could see it being a little hectic if there were more people out there, especially since the holes are so close together. But go on a Tuesday night and if you get hit by a ball, I'll come apologize. read more

I give this course 5 stars because as a Veteran sometimes it helps to be around other vets and feel connected. Bill took care of us, with great info and tips. Very warm and welcoming. In addition, the reasonable cost and great exercise helped too! I understand that it is an executive golf course (consists mainly of par 3's), but they could at least keep the greens maintained a little better or throw a little bit more money into course design and the proshop. Either way, this a fun little cheap place (I think $8 for VA employees or veterans and $12 for non-VA) to work on your short game (all par 3's). read more

They have installed mats on a grass golf course! They insist you hit off the mats when there's nothing but green grass all around you:)) This is just wrong on so many levels (the ball spins too much off mats and fat shots actually come out hot as the club bounces off the mat). They've done so many silly little projects around the club house, I just don't get. They got rid of the practice bunker in favor of some weeds....I guess. They got rid of the nice big practice green in favor of a synthetic little putting green you might install in your backyard. It's 10 times faster than the greens on the course and sort of lumpy. My real problem is with the greens on the actual course. They are too soft and they refuse to cut them down, hence they are super slow and grainy. It makes the course much less interesting to play. The course was pretty defenseless already and now it's even easier. I got bored after 9 holes yesterday and just left. read more

Took my 7 and and 8 year old little golfer nephews to this course and they absolutely loved it. The had the opportunity to practice the moves they learned in their golf class. The course is well kept and the parking is free/plenty. The older gentleman working in the shack was super helpful, friendly and sweet. Would definitely recommend this place for some practice swings. read more

Fun little golf course that is great if you live near by. No water, no sand traps, quirky layout that will take you a round or two to get the hang of. You hit off mats at the tee box, but the mats are landscaped in to the grass and dirt, they are not sitting on concrete like most courses with mats. Much bigger and softer than Rancho mats, I was pleasantly surprised. The course is basically a pitch and putt like other reviews have mentioned. If you hit around men's average distances tee shots would be something like two G/A/S wedges, two P/9i ,four 8/7i, and one 4i. Greens have been pretty good recently except for a few with some bumps near the edge. If you take the course for what it is, I think it's a great place to play and relax, especially if you live close by. It's run by the VA, not American Golf Corporation, so grade it and set expectations accordingly. read more

When you do get on a groomed course, it will be smooth sailing. What if all service flags were displayed. Start the day by raising the colors. Play "To the Colors" on a CD. VETS could give the 'Hand Salute'. It would truly be a 'Heroes Golf Course'. Word will get around and just might stir up a little business. read more

This a very small and tight course. It's great for honing your short game. Extremely friendly staff. If you're over 55 you can play all day for $10.00. I love the fact that it's rarely crowded. They've just put in a whole new irrigation system as well as mats to hit your tee shots from. I'm told that they will also be planting new grass in front of the mats for those of us who prefer to hit all shots from the turf. They're really working hard to make this a great little par three course. And it's so close to my winter home I can jump over play 9 or more and still have time for chores. Give it a try the tiny greens will really improve your short game. And if there's no one behind you play two balls. I'll give it all five stars when they redo the greens as well. read more

Great course!!! The course in the past 3 years has been turned around for the better. The greens are %100 better then they were in 2013. The course is very well maintained and the price is right. You can't beat the price to golf and help VETS by just going out to play a round. I highly recommend this par 3 course. read more
