Severely understaffed. This place was running out of cars, even though I placed a reservation one month before pick-up. They will not allow you to rent an SUV without a credit card, so I couldn't use my debit card. The website didn't say this at all. In addition to this, using a debit card only allows you to rent sedans and nothing else. This location was also running out of cars and denied many people. However, I was able to secure a sedan - even though I chose the "Pay Later" option for a minivan. Also, they charge you an authorization amount after your time is up with the car. I got charged $262 and I'm trying to sort the matter now. It had to get escalated. read more

THE RESERVATION PROBLEM WAS AAA'S FAULT. THE WAY I WAS TREATED WAS 100% THIS HERTZ LOCATION'S FAULT. I want to be completely fair about what happened. I booked a Hertz rental through AAA for a 6:00 PM pickup, which is when I get out of work. AAA's website allowed me to make and confirm the reservation without stopping me or warning me that this Hertz location would be closed at that time. That's a problem I have already taken up with AAA. But what happened when I arrived at this Hertz location was absolutely disgusting customer service. When I arrived, the doors were locked, although employees were still inside. I tried the door because I had a confirmed reservation and didn't understand what had happened. Instead of someone simply coming over and explaining the situation, employees inside laughed and pointed/tapped at the sign indicating that they were closed. Seriously? I'm standing outside with a confirmed Hertz reservation, obviously confused about why I've been allowed to book a vehicle that I can't pick up, and your response is to laugh at me through a locked door and point at a sign? I wasn't demanding that anyone reopen the location. I wasn't demanding that they stay late. I wasn't asking anyone to break company policy. I was asking for HELP. How difficult would it have been to open the door for 30 seconds and say, "Unfortunately, we're closed and can't process the rental, but here's what you can try," or suggest another Hertz location, an airport location, a reservation transfer, a phone number, or literally ANYTHING? Eventually, one employee came outside and essentially told me, "I don't know what to tell you. I got nothing for you," and walked away. That interaction told me everything I needed to know about this location. Here's another important part: I had tried calling this Hertz location multiple times earlier that day and nobody answered the phone. Nobody contacted me about the reservation either. Had someone simply answered the phone, this entire situation potentially could have been avoided. I understand that employees want to leave when their shift is over. I understand that the location was technically closed. And again, I am not blaming this location for AAA allowing the 6:00 PM reservation. I am blaming this location for how its employees chose to treat a confused customer standing outside with a legitimate Hertz reservation. There is a difference between saying, "I'm sorry, we're closed and unfortunately can't process your reservation," and laughing at a customer, pointing at a sign through a locked door, refusing to communicate, and then telling them you have nothing for them. That isn't customer service. That's contempt for the customer. And these weren't random people hanging around the building. These are supposed to be customer service representatives and management professionals representing Hertz. You never know who is standing on the other side of that counter or door. You don't know whether that person rents a vehicle once every five years or travels constantly. You don't know how many friends, relatives, coworkers, or customers they might tell about their experience. Well, I'm telling people about mine. I will never willingly do business with this Hertz location after the way I was treated, and I will recommend that everyone I know avoid it. This location needs serious customer-service retraining from the top down. You can teach someone how to process a rental agreement. Apparently, somebody also needs to teach them how to treat another human being with basic courtesy. AAA's system caused my original problem. I recently had an incredibly frustrating experience with Hertz Car Rental that left me feeling utterly disappointed and dissatisfied with their services. It all began when I rented a car from Hertz for a week trip with my family. "BRYANT" before i got the rental vehicle he had to put air in one of the tires then on the same day at night l encountered a flat tire. The following day I called "BRYANT" and explained the situation he told , I should have called him, at 11:00 Pm really???, they close at 6pm However, the real nightmare started when we returned the car to the rental location. To my surprise and dismay, I was informed by the "BRYANT" that I would be responsible for covering the cost of the flat tire repair. Despite my protests and attempts to explain the situation, BRYANT remained firm in their decision and insisted that I pay for the repair. Feeling frustrated and taken advantage of, I reached out to Hertz's customer service department to seek assistance and clarification. However, my attempts to resolve the issue were met with nothing but a runaround. The customer service representatives were unhelpful, indifferent, and showed no empathy towards my situation. They simply reiterated the rental policy and failed to address my concerns adequately. Days turned into weeks, and despite my repeated efforts to reach a resolution, Hertz continued to ignore my requests for a refund for the flat tire repair charges. The lack of transparency, accountability, and empathy displayed by Hertz throughout this ordeal left me feeling utterly let down and disheartened. In the end, not only did I have to bear the unexpected expense of the flat tire repair, but I also had to endure the frustration of dealing with a company that showed a blatant disregard for customer satisfaction and loyalty. My experience with Hertz Car Rental has been nothing short of a nightmare, and I strongly advise others to think twice before entrusting their business to a company that values profits over customer care. Horrible customer service, they never have vehicles but allow you to make reservations and send confirmation. They advertise a manager special and the catch is that all manager specials are electric cars when available, but if not, you are forced to upgrade to a full-size vehicle for an additional 25 per day, if you need a car. I booked it online for Economy type of car, how I was surprised to get a car with 90K miles... 90,000 miles!!!! wow!!!! I never thought that you can rent a car , using your insurance for leased car to cover Chevy 2021 with 90K miles on it. So I took a picture of miles and went back to the office and the manager Jacob, was surprised himself, that made me laugh,,, Dont you think you need to retire this car? What if I stuck somewhere, driving this dinosaur... I never had cars 90K , I was trading them at 70K... really bad experince, no other cars was offerred. And was being told to go to Newark Airport to get better car, LOL. When I asked to bring me car from there, Jacob sad there is no cars to exchange... So, I WOULD NOT recommend to go to HertZ, maybe this location at least. read more

I'm a Hertz President's Circle loyalty member. I'm also National Executive Elite with also lifetime elite status benefits on airlines and at hotels. Do yourself a favor, avoid Hertz Hackensack at all costs and go to nearby Hertz Paramus or any other agency's location. Based on my experience here today, I would find any low-end non-brand name "rent-a-car" agency before trying Hertz Hackensack again. The Hertz Hackensack location is an unfriendly grimy dump, not representative of the premium Hertz brand or its typical high-level customer service. It is both surprising and disappointing to me that Hertz corporate allows this substandard location to continue operating, diminishing brand equity and trust built with loyal customers such as myself. In short, I was told today to take a hike -- in not so many words -- without any apology, vehicle, or compensation for my loss and inconvenience. As a frequent traveler, I understand that vehicles booked -- or flights and hotels for that matter -- might be overbooked despite confirmed reservations. When such circumstances happen, travel industry providers normally do their best to make other accommodations for customers and give priority to their elite loyalty customers. My experience today at Hertz Hackensack was the complete opposite of this. After an unpleasant call to the smug manager, it all makes sense why this location and the service provided here is terrible. The Hertz President's Circle is the highest level in the loyalty program. It is common practice in the industry to bump non-elite member reservations in favor of retaining the business of frequent loyalty member customers. After spending $37 on an Uber, I waited 20 minutes in the office before being helped to find out my original Uber car rental was cancelled by the staff, and there wasn't another Uber car rental available until perhaps tomorrow. As a Hertz elite customer, I asked if I could simply rent a different car for personal use directly from Hertz for the night and back in the morning just to get home to save another $37 Uber ride each way. This request was repeatedly denied by the agent, and later the smug manager via phone, despite Hertz's reservation system still allowing me to book cars in multiple size categories, and the many cars sitting available in their parking lot (see photos) shortly before closing. I was told all cars were reserved and "it wouldn't be fair" to the existing reservations, even though I would have the car back in morning before the other customers, inevitable no-shows, and likely cancelations. Precisely these reasons is why Hertz reservations was allowing me to still reserve cars at the Hackensack location while I was being told at the location nothing was available. Other Hertz locations & rental agencies provide cars on a first-come-first-serve basis, and give priority to their loyalty program elite member customers if expecting shortages. So instead of accommodating me with any car sitting in their parking lot, Hertz Hackensack wasted ~2-hours of my time and ~$70 so far in Uber rides. The smug manager refused providing me with compensation for any loss, uber costs, time, and inconvenience when asked. Very unprofessional and should rethink staying in any customer facing position. Unfortunately, I am back home now still without the needed rental. To quote Neal Page, "give me a fucking automobile! A fucking Datsun, a fucking Toyota, a fucking Mustang, a fucking Buick! The worst ever. Usually car rental is hassle, but I usually end up with a car at the end. 1. they didn't have any car. Just Chevrolet Camaro. (When you rent a sedan for 4-5 people, you don't expect Camaro) 2. I accepted the Camaro. But not over yet! I rented until Sunday for 2 days, but you will have to pay for 3 days. First let me start saying that it has been unpleasant experience from the beginning. 1. I rented Nissan Ultima and I was supposed to be picked up within 15 minutes of driving distance of Hackensack Hertz location at New Jersey. There were three male representatives and one female representative I noticed at the location. On the phone I was told"we are" not picking up anybody due to COVID-19. I had pre-rental upgrade up to the full-size and I was given full-size vehicle on the very first agreement. I was offered cars which smelled like significant secondhand smoke and I had to request to get appropriate smell free car. At the time of drop off, I was refused again for ride with in 10 minutes of Hackensack location ( I needed a ride to englewood,NJ.)-A white lady customer who just came right after me, was offered ride after rental return (approx 11.30 am on 11/30/20) right in front of my eyes. Clearly discriminatory behavior and I pointed that out to the representatives over there who finally agreed to give me a ride after this.First let's not forget- I would have not known and paid for cab both ways. I actually paid for cab on one way. And cancellation fees for Uber on way back as I was not offered fair treatment. Unfortunately I got involved in a minor collision on same day and I had to exchange a car. I did see some rental customers for were given rides. Accident was handled appropriately by me and my insurance company. Despite of my full-size eligibility I was offered compact or midsize only for exchange and I was provided reason that they do not have an availability. I continue to put faith into the location and the representatives over there and I realized when my friend was able to Book full size reservation at same time when I was denied availability. I called Hertz customer care who verified that the location does have availability - this is when I started doubting that location and their Professionalism. I called Hertz customer care two days in a row to consider for a full-size availability so I can exchange the car since it was not enough for my family. Had to finally request to make a notation in my reservation because every time to I called Hackensack location -representatives would dismiss me. Up to the point that the person who gave me car ( Keith?) mentioned that those Hertz customer care people does not have any idea what car we have and they live in the other part of the world( sarcastic and derogatory for company's team members ) This was in my opinion very unprofessional and very dismissive answer as We know customer care clearly has an access to this location's fleet and I just felt like I was being dumped and dismissed despite repeated request. I had to call and wait for 30 mins in their office in order to get exchange when all representatives did not help me and watch making calls to customer care. Finally they gave me exchange after I told them I will have to write a review but it was clear that they did not care as I was discriminated again after drop off for ride. This representative was angry with me for requesting for an exchange which was appropriate for my reservation especially when he downgraded my request despite of being a gold rewards member and continued to dismiss when I walked into location. I felt like instead of helping existing rental customer they gave very unfair treatment. I strongly request internal audit is needed for this location. Same representative also made comment to another female employee "you just have to look cute". Never again after this unfair treatment. read more

Hertz was offering local pickup my home and I requested it during my reservation. However, on the day before the pickup, I called this location to confirm and the representative in that location told me that he would be the only person on duty and could not picked me up. I asked him if he will reimburse me for the cab but he could not cover the whole $40 cab ride that I incurred. It turned out they could never do any pick up during the weekend and they won't tell you that during reservation. Sound like a scam or gross misrepresentation to me! The worse car rental ever!!! Someone rear ended me, their insurance sent me to Hertz for a rental while repairs were being made. An employee called me to inform me they have a Jeep Cherokee waiting for pick up (today a Friday). I had to come get the car or keys because they are closed on Saturdays. My car is being turned into the mechanic tomorrow (Saturday) I arrive and told I had to put a $50 surcharge down, which was not told to me prior. I advised I'll pick up my kids and be back with my card. They do not accept Apple Pay so I had to go get my card, pick my kids up from school, sit in traffic to come back to a Chevy! How do you give the car away? Then said they didn't know if I would come back, umm you're closed tomorrow! Meanwhile I drive an Acura MDX, then to be told to come back another day or to another Hertz for a different car . Like this wasn't a huge inconvenience in the first place! After I mentioned it he said it was automatically done and would pay extra after. Received a bill twice for all the tolls I side which I am not saying I didn't. I rented a vehicle from this Hertz location on March 29th, 2017 and I just returned it today Sunday April 2nd. This Hertz gets better and better, never disappoints. I'm sorry to hear what happened to the other reviewer, but my experience here was great. My husband and I were moving from NY to OR and needed to rent a car one-way. Hertz is the only car rental agency that will give you a good price on this sort of trip. We took a bus to a stop a few blocks from the Hertz office and walked there (quite easy once you know which direction to go in - facing away from the main road, head to your left). We had a reservation and the man behind the desk who helped us was very efficient even if not overly friendly. He had our paperwork arranged and we were in the car within 10 - 15 minutes of our arrival. The car was clean and in great shape (thank you Toyota!) and got us across the country without any problems. read more

I rented a vehicle from Hertz after being in an accident, insurance paid for the first 16 days of rental. Given the circumstances of the pandemic I had the rental for 60 days. When I returned the rental I was charged a totally different rate that I was not made aware of. When I asked to speak to manager I was told she was on vacation and couldn't help me. I was referred to a Regional Manager that I was promised would call me, they never did. I called the store several times trying to gain clarification with no success and no return call back. When I finally spoke to the manager she offered no help or solution. She told me she had a conversation with me explaining all of this, not true! I will never rent from Hertz again. It got a bit pricey though when they told my dad that they didn't accept liberty insurance because he didn't have liability.
