Never rent here! Such a shady place! I have made a reservation online and thoroughly reviewed the policy. It didn't say anything about special terms for paying with debit card. However when I arrived at the location, the person at the counter was very unpleasant and said that they do not accept debit cards due to a new policy that's in place for the last 10 days and they have no idea why this was not displayed online, nor that they care about my reservation. After I pointed to the flyer that had information about payments with debit card, I was told that they actually can accept a debit card, but I just do not qualify for that, because in order to use a debit card I had to have a Corporate Discount Program number... I asked if I could speak to the manager, but the guy at the counter who's name is Chris said he is the only person here and he is a branch manager and gave me a "can you finally leave me alone and get out" kind of look. At that time I saw some person walking out from their office and quickly leaving the building. Another lie as he clearly wasn't the only employee at the office. Chris refused to provide his last name or employee ID, but I have recorded our conversation so that Hertz senior management can listen to how some of the "branch managers" treat their clients. read more

First time using Hertz. Still reasonably priced compared to Enterprise, which I have used before and rates there seem to be up 50% since I last used them. I made an account and reserved and pre-paid on the Hertz website and everything went extremely smoothly. The Hertz rep was friendly and helpful. Use a credit card if you can. Debit card will require you to bring more paperwork on yourself. Enterprise does the same thing with debit card use. Don't go by the hours of operation shown on Yelp; I think the Hertz website has them more accurately listed. read more

Called and said I would pick up car an hour late, and was told no problem it was ready. Showed up an hour later and was told car needed an oil change, and would be ready in an hour! Unbelievable. I needed the car to get to SFO and catch a flight, but fortunately my plans were flexible so I waited for them to get the car ready. The hours go by. I finally get my car 6 hours after my reserved time. Part two: the car is given to me with 3/4 tank of gas. I mention this and the attendant tells me it would be put in my record and to just return it 3/4 full. I return it 3/4 full and mention all this to the returning attendant at SFO who tells me he'll take care of it. I get the receipt emailed to me later and of course Hertz charges me $23 for fuel. My email to Customer Service has gone unanswered so far, so I'll probably have to dispute the charge with the credit card company. Renting with Hertz is a PITA which is why I use National whenever possible. read more

She folded the seats away for us in the minivan we rented, and made sure we understood everything about the vehicle before we took off. The office was a little crowded when we went, and since the space is shared with a local autobody/mechanic shop it gets a little confusing. But, at least you can probably reasonably expect the vehicles to be maintained. read more

I was a little wary after seeing some of the other reviews here, but the price was good so I thought I'd take a chance. We couldn't be happier with our rental. Jose was very professional, but also a total sweetheart. He chatted about our trip plans with real interest. He remembered us 5 days later when we got back and wanted to hear how everything went. In the meantime, he took care of the rental details quickly, explained everything well, the car was fine, the price was right, and there were no surprise charges. If there are any negatives, I'll say this: (1) they could probably use a bell on the desk to ring for service, and (2) the outside of the storefront could use a little attention, cleaning-wise. But that stuff is easily fixed, and I won't dock them a star for that. Great experience overall, and I'll be using them for our next trip. read more

I rented a car from here on 10.18. 2013 Eden runs the place. This woman can get things done! i took my truck to the Ford dealership for service. I needed a rental car. Hertz picked me up from the dealership. I wanted a fun car to drive for the weekend but i hadn't made a reservation because i didn't know how long the dealership would have my truck. Eden is the manager. She told me all the cars I wanted were reserved over the weekend but she would try to get me a car from the Adrenalin Collection. She found me a Challenger RT!! Made a reservation Sunday evening for pick up Monday morning at 730. All went well on website, gave me car options, allowed me to check in to save time. Done, perfect. Almost to hertz, get a call from employee stating that they have no cars to rent. I told them I will be there in a minute. Went in and they said the same thing. Said we might have cars returning at 1pm but can't guarantee. I asked why would the website let me book a specific car if there isn't any cars at this location. They said the search was for Northern California. What???? Anyways, not sure if this is a Hertz company website issue or this specific branch but it sucked. I used Hertz twice, and twice I've been overcharged. Burned, actually! I've experienced serious problems stemming from shoddy and negligent customer service, resulting in an overcharge of over $600. A friend visiting from Europe paid cash for her rental, yet Hertz charged my credit card that was provided for deposit only. More recently, I returned a car after hours and was instructed to deposit the keys in the return box; I was shocked to discover Hertz charged for an additional 3 days, claiming they "found" the key a decidedly inconvenient several days later. When I called to straighten out the overcharge, management incompetently and dishonestly claimed not to recall our previous after hours conversation. Moreover, management demeaned my accent, surely aware that such a comment could only exacerbate an already unpleasant situation. Obviously, I will not only never use them again, I will discourage every one I can from considering their services. Truthfully, I opened a Yelp account to write this review. May I recommend using another rental car service in Novato, CA. I had booked a car from Thursday to Sunday morning on Kayak, as I leave town Sunday afternoon. Upon arrival at the Hertz desk, I was informed that their offices are closed on Sunday's, and because they have decided to close Memorial Day, I would be charged an extra two days for the car until someone was their to check the car in. I was informed that their hours on Saturday are 9-12, and that I would have to return the car before noon or I would be charged until Tuesday. When I questioned the manager in training Megan, she became noticeably frustrated. The only two options I was given were to return the car a day earlier than my conformation email had stated, which would be to change my weekend plans, or to be charged twice of the original total for another two days. She told me "this issue happens all time" and that "there was nothing she could do", while being quite frustrated and short with me. There were two gentleman also working. Whether they were the franchise owners, or managers on duty, they had been looking at the ground the entire time. I have used many rental car services in the past, as I travel for my career. With the lack of customer service, or genuine empathy of this Hertz office, I would highly recommend using Enterprise or Avis in Novato, CA. read more

The Novato Hertz simply provides that extra level of customer service that is unmatched by competitors down the street. Past managers at this branch had simply run this Hertz location into the ground. Go to Enterprise instead! I had a reservation for a car from this location and couldn't have had a worse experience. My friends' flight was delayed to I tried several times to call and let them know I would be picking the car up about an hour later than scheduled. When I was unable to reach anyone by phone I drove down to the storefront, thinking something might be wrong with their phones. When I got there I found a counter with no employee, only a guy in a Hertz uniform who informed me he was just a transport driver. He said someone was supposed to be coming but he had no idea when. He also said, with a laugh, that they didn't have any cars anyway. I told him I had a reservation and he laughed again and said something to the effect of "too bad for you." I will never do business with Hertz again. I was lucky that Enterprise is right down the street and were very helpful and understanding. read more

WILL NEVER RENT FROM NOVATO HERTZ AGAIN! I would recommend you go somewhere else in Marin County. Megan and her manager are the worst I have ever dealt with when renting a car. I booked my car online, and specifically pre-registered to get a discounted rate. When I arrived I provided her my receipt showing what my total was going to be: $57.99 taxes, Damage Waiver, etc. Right there in black and white it said I paid $31.12 at preregistration and then I would have $26.87 remaining at the desk. Megan proceeded to blame me fo my card not being charged when I completed the Hertz pre-registration online form. She charged the full rate on my rental. She didn't say, "oh goodness I am so sorry for our error and the inconvenience this is causing. Let us upgrade you and get you on your way". Side note: their office is in the same building as an auto shop, so it is filthy. RUN don't walk from this Hertz office. I should have gone to Enterprise Rent-A-Car. read more

I booked a car 2 weeks in advance here for a 12 day trip. When I arrived I was advised that they did not have the size car I booked. I waited for 1/2 hour, in their very dirty waiting area, and they rounded one up. I took it home to pack up and the trunk wouldn't open. I went back and it took another 1/2 hour to get it open. Fortunately the district manager was there and he figured it out. The car had a gps system which was a nice feature, however, it planned a route for me that took me, unnecessarily, over a toll road. I tried to pay the toll online with the toll company and was advised that the car I was driving was already registered so I could not pay the toll. I tried phoning the toll company and got the same info. When I returned the car I asked about the toll and was told that Hertz doesn't have their cars registered for tolls. The toll was $2.40. A week after I returned the car, I received a charge on my credit card for $28.68. I did not need to take a toll road, nor did the gps indicate that I would be traveling a toll road (the gps in my personal car advises if a route has a toll). I returned the car with a full tank of gas. When the guy went out to check the mileage and gas he came in the office, after making 2 trips to the car, and said that the gas tank was empty. Fortunately, the woman checking me in had seen me in the gas station across the street so she marked the tank full on my return receipt. The people are all very nice, however, they are not on top of their game here. The rate was good and they allow travel to anywhere in the US, unlike Enterprise, which only allows travel to adjoining states. If the price is right I will rent here again, but next time, with eyes wide open and my own personal gps. I am a longtime Hertz #1 Club member and my overall experience with Hertz has been positive. This was my first experience with the Novato office and I was surprised at the condition of the office and at the ineptitude of some of the staff there. read more

For years we rented cars from Elan at Hertz in Novato, delightful woman who worked very hard to get us what we requested and made sure it was clean! She left, and now not so good. We have left Hertz, and are trying out Enterprise in Novato. Good so far. Hertz would get in a car that we didn't want and suggest we take it because it all that they had, and an upgrade maybe and charged more. HERTZ has cars with many miles on them, (40k plus) never anything new with a couple thousand miles. The cars out of Novato are not clean, and often do not come with a full tank of gas. I have had two nightmare experiences in a row with San Francisco Hertz and Novato Hertz, California. First Rogue via Uber program came with front hood-bumper misalignment not fixed, they took photos, so I accepted. But main issue was bald tires with faulty plug, Big O Tire said that was dangerous, purchased front tires new with warranty ($350) and Hertz manager approved reimbursement but I got screwed, never paid back, plus they did not refund $250 security deposit. Charged my card another $2,233 now disputed. Front mirror always falling off. Tremendous loss of Uber income, big hassle, fees extra for bridge tolls Ubering, unreasonable. Got ripped off, my card company now has my proof. Big corporations, no respect, liars and very poor customer service. I see the local office only two star ratings, gee that tells it all. Second car, Murano from Novato rented privately, turns out Arizona plates, no registration in car, lied to told it was not necessary to have it, well it was by law even according to Hertz Corp twice told. Told they would get the registration but never called me as I requested they do so or get me another car; never heard from them. Lunch 12 to 1 no one there, not one employee to service customer. Conclusion: they deliberately removed registration to block me from potential Uber driving without admitting to it. Although my credit card fully charged July 27th, 2019 Murano reported as stolen shortly after when not stolen, was in touch with Hertz Corporation throughout the situation, very hard to get through to them on phone, surely they get many complaints, obvious now as to why. Agents put you through to wrong phone numbers giving you the run around and if you do get an agent, which I finally did, given case numbers and all, lip service promises not kept and after reaching executive customer service, the agent denies everything without even offering any legitimate reply to your concerns. Worse experience I ever had renting a car, Hertz shame on you, your disorganization, very poor customer service not willing to resolve serious matter in a fair way, only offered denial without addressing serious issues and shoving it all under the carpet. I needed a rental car for a 500 mile round trip business event last weekend. I saw a discount rate online when making the reservation, giving me one weekend day at no charge, making the Friday through Monday rental $62 total including tax. Not bad, right? On Friday, I called for a pickup, and they arrived timely. When we got there, the rental car was ready to go. Check out was quick and I was on my way. The car was great, with absolutely no issues. The only minor hiccup in the entire experience was when I dropped off the car, and that was just because a call came in while I was returning, and rather than asking the caller to hold for a minute, the person in charge tried to focus on the call while checking me in and was clearly distracted. I was extra concerned because I wanted to pay with my debit card, but had to reserve under my credit card, and did explain that at the time I initially rented. I had to give the clerk the "time-out" hand signal to get the clerk to stop closing out my bill while talking to the other person so the wrong card would not be charged. Multi-tasking is OK, but I've always believed that the customer in front of you deserves your attention, and the caller should be asked to wait a moment. Hertz has just entered my boycott-for-life category. We rented a car through Orbitz. We chose a "standard" SUV. When we arrived we were given a mid-sized SUV and told emphatically that mid-sized and standard were the same class of vehicle. Hmmmmm. The prices were far from the same, with the standard being more than $200 more for the 10 day rental. After hours on the phone with Orbitz, which provided incomparable excellent customer service, they helped resolve the issue and after lots of teeth pulling, Orbitz got Hertz to acknowledged the problem and finally give us a refund for the difference. While getting a refund was nice, it did not make up for the hassles, including the misinformation given at Novato Hertz, the hours spent on multiple calls with Orbitz and the heat, anger and pain that my Chinese relatives experienced during the car rental transaction. read more

Rude, with no remorse... I reserved a car for noon Nov. 21st, went to pick it up and was greeted by their employee Eric who immediately said "we have no cars today." I was not amused, but asked if he was serious. He said I needed to come back at 3pm, and he would have a car ready. At 3pm I called Jose, who said he was working hard to get a car by 4:30, I asked if I should be worried and if I should look elsewhere. He said it was up to me... (thanks man) I then asked if it was guaranteed there would be a car there for me by closing time, he said no. He then told me I had to call Orbitz to cancel it if I chose to..., (I called Orbitz, who then called Jose to cancel it... asinine). I'm off to San Rafael to try to find a car, but it would have been helpful for them to tell me at noon that no cars would be available... instead of string me along with assurances (by both Eric and Jose).
