First time coming to a hey tea lab! This location is in the middle of time square, and honestly didnt have the greatest experience. I ordered the matcha 3.6 which is matcha with pistachio viennese style cloud, and yes it was super delicious but it was def pretty pricey. The matcha was strong and creamy, and i did rlly like the pistachio cream on top (better than molly tea's pistachio mt!), sweet and not too overpowering with pistachio and in a way pretty light! Id recommend the drink if you like matcha and pistachio. I heard that in heytea labs you get to get the experience of watching the staff make the drinks in front of you, but when i came the staff hurriedly made the drink and left it on the counter. Maybe im overthinking it, but the staff were a bit rude and seemed to not want to interact with the guests despite it not even being busy. THE BIG: This is the Heytea Lab and it surprisingly underwhelmed in terms of store aesthetic. However the drinks were great! Located right off of Times Square, this lab is a small lab. Walking or public transportation is preferred here. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I got influenced on the heytea tealab on instagram and needed to try this place especially since heytea is my favorite boba spot. Ordering was interesting, as the place is busy, however I didn't put my order in until 20 minutes waiting and mind you no one was in front of me. They had a menu for the tealab itself and I ended up getting the Oolong 3.6. It uses a special oolong tea they source from Taiwan and pair it with a rich whole fat milk. There are some other very photogenic drinks out there, but I couldn't figure out what those drinks were. Next time! In short, they were out of most ingredients including boba, staff wasn't familiar with the register and ordering system, waited 45 minutes to realize we'd been forgotten about, staff unable to process refunds (requires approval of a manager not onsite; if the manager is unreachable you're out of luck), they threw away my receipt but pressured me to provide it before calling the manager. Manager didn't pick up so we couldn't get refunded, asked them to make the drinks quickly...and after all this they didn't actually make what I ordered. $30 for 2 drinks and this experience. I've been to Heytea locations all over the country and this experience is pretty consistent at a high level... You'll see for each location the number one complaint is having to wait 20+ minutes for a simple order. Overall: 3.7/5 They had a BOGO deal on the Golden Oolong Yuzu so we made the trip since this location was close by and open past 9 PM. It was absolute chaos though. Being right by Times Square did not help, and the line management was basically nonexistent so it was really confusing trying to figure out what was going on. I witnessed an angry customer and at one point, the cashier had to start warning people upfront that their order would take 25 minutes before he would even put it in. For the Golden Oolong Yuzu ($7.49), we got one with sago ($0.49) and one with matcha jelly ($0.49). The sago paired way better with this drink than the matcha jelly. I should've known better than to try to get boba in Times Square lol. Thought it was a perfect early afternoon pick me up and while the tea isn't bad (got their current seasonal Oolong Yuzu Tea), the setup at this store was really bad. Stopped by Heytea during a very busy time and ordered the tiramisu drink iced. Despite the crowd, the tea came out relatively quickly, which I appreciated given how packed the shop was. The tea was alright, but the service and store setup left a lot to be desired. The overall arrangement felt poorly designed: customers needed to close their own drink lids, yet there were no proper bar tables to place the cups on. The "self-serve" station was positioned directly in front of the entrance, making the area constantly crowded as people came and went. Because of this, I had to use a very narrow side ledge next to the station to close my lid. Someone entering or exiting bumped into me, and my drink got spilled. (I don't blame him; it was really crowded anyway.) I immediately informed the cashier that a drink had spilled and asked if someone could clean the floor, apologizing for the inconvenience. The cashier appeared indifferent and no one responded. I had to notify them a second time because I was concerned about the wet floor, especially on a rainy day. I surely didn't want anyone else slipping on it. I then asked a server with a yellow/brown ponytail at the pickup counter whether there was a restroom where I could clean myself, since the drink had spilled on my coat and umbrella. She told me the restroom was not for customers, which I understood. I then asked if I could at least use their sink (visible from where we were) to rinse my dripping umbrella so that I could leave the store on the rainy day, and she replied, with clear annoyance, that the sinks were not for customer use either. While I was drying my umbrella with paper towels, another staff member (manager?) came out the back door and saw this, and she immediately offered to help rinse it for me. She was very kind, and while she rinsed the umbrella, I explained what had happened and apologized again about the spill on the floor. The earlier server with the blond/brown ponytail stood right nearby during the conversation but made no acknowledgment at all, nor did she even ever made an eye contact with me. Thanks to the staff member who helped me, and the gentleman who cleaned the spill , the drink was eventually remade. Their kindness is the main reason I am still giving three stars. As for the drink itself, I ordered a matcha tea from the Tea Lab. The floating cream had a pleasant aroma, but the tea underneath was unremarkable; I've had better at other places. Overall, this store would benefit from better service training. I travel extensively for concerts and have visited many milk-tea shops, including other Heytea locations. While some staff here were courteous, others fell well below average. The decision to have customers close their own lids directly in front of the main door, without providing a proper surface to do so, is also a surprisingly impractical design choice. read more

HeyTea keeps on expanding and now they opened a Tea Lab, which does both the regular menu items in the back of the shop and the experimental drinks in the front. I came to try out their new experimental menu. While some were a pass for me, there are others that were really good. Matcha 0 ($8) - the snow ice is made from matcha and milk, which makes up the majority of this drink (if you can call it a drink). They top it with Viennese style cloud and sprinkle chopped pistachios on top. There's coconut milk jelly, which I guess is mixed in with the shaved ice? It's definitely a perfect treat for a hot summer day. Gardenia 3 ($8.50) - Consists of the said gardenia tea topped with milk pecan foam cloud. This drink was alright, not my personal favorite. Gardenia 5 ($10) - This drink was a mixture of Gardenia tea, coconut water, topped with pistachio cloud. I personally wasn't a fan of the taste of this drink, even after stirring the drink. Gongfu 3.3 ($10) - Made with black tea topped with milk pistachio cloud and toasted meringue. This one I found to be a tasty drink. I guess we are also entering that economic period where drinks will cost over $10, which I find to be getting out of hand at this point. There's a screen at the front that shows which orders are being prepared and which ones are ready for pickup, which is helpful when the place is packed. I ordered a Blue Cloud Matcha and a kale tea. It ended up taking about 30 minutes for my order to be completed, which felt pretty long for drinks. The matcha was okay, not bad, but I've definitely had better. I haven't tried the kale tea yet, so the jury's still out on that one. Apparently they're known for their cheese cloud drinks, which seem to be the big draw. Unfortunately, I'll probably never find out how they taste because I don't see myself returning. There are just too many other great spots out there. Also knocking off a star for the service. There are two registers you can order from- the one near the front for the labs drinks and the one in the back for the regular menu. You can't order the special drinks in the app, sadly. The Matcha Zero was basically like a Korean shaved ice and the Gongfu 3 felt like the flavors didn't mesh too well together. Hey Tea has an absolute chokehold on me with the Coconut Mango Boom. I hate Times Square but that was the closest Hey Tea to me at the moment and the drink was as good as I remember, especially during hot NYC summers. I'm glad there's only two locations in SoCal because I average two of these bad boys a day in NY. read more
