The food is decent but nothing really stands out. The ambiance is dated but is clean and staff is friendly. Much better then an Applebees or the Ram but not somewhere I'll go out of my way to experience again. The Sirloin with garlic butter was tender but the steak lacked seasoning and the garlic butter was nice but didn't do enough to help. The shrimp to make it a surf and turf were the real disappointment. Rubbery and unremarkable. Surprisingly the stuffed chicken with couscous was the best dish. Cooked nicely with a little spice. This used to be one of our favorite places for happy hour but as of 10/15/24 they changed their policy to have HH in the bar only and their menu as well, and it's no longer one of our favorite places. My favorite appetizer the pollo negro is gone and the fire steak has changed. It's a shame when you find something good and then it changes for the worse. I clearly do not share the opinions of other Yelpers about HG Bistro.. and I will say, as a Puyallup-onian, friends and family living here don't seem to go here that much. To be honest? The food just was not *good*. Sadly. One dish was even sent back because it was so awful. That being said, I wanted to go somewhere local and fancy before having my baby last year. In Puyallup there aren't that many choices. My impressions: PARKING - Small lot, gravel, unmarked spots. Kinda tough. LOBBY - Tight. TABLE - We had 4 people at a long table and it felt a bit tight with the people behind us and at the corner. Some other spots looked nice and spacious though. ATMOSPHERE - Nice and pretty! Most of the stars come from this. The layout is a little strange with sharp turns. FOOD - Flabbergasted, we just didn't enjoy the dishes. Even the sourdough bread was just bland and cold. *Gorgonzola steak salad (kind of a plain wimpy salad with a small albeit delicious serving of steak on top) - $25 *Togarashi Ahi - sent back. Not tasty. The ahi was served cold, be aware. -$22 *Quinoa & Vegetable Bowl - okay. -$17 *Sage chicken - a plain chicken breast (not that well seasoned) in a soupy butternut squash mash. - $24 So, this place isn't for us. Our waiter gave everything glowing reviews, but we weren't as impressed... - Fire Steak appetizer, menu said these were medallions, but it was really a beef curry swimming in sauce - my expectation was a sliced beef arranged with drizzles of sauce. It was good, an ok curry. -House steak burger with peppers and bacon jam - this was ok--did not hold up to our favorite burger at Tipsy Cow in Redmond, patty tasted premade. -tacos- coconut shrimp, chicken, steak - the shrimp was by far the best of the 3, we added pineapple salsa which also had tomatoes in it--I make pineapple salsa at home, and this one was just ok - s'mores dessert was amazing and worth the trip -cocktails were delish My recommendation- come for happy hour and dessert. Haven't been here in a long time until our visit tonight - it did not disappoint! Just as we remembered! Lisa and our server were wonderful as usual and all of the food was amazing! We had the steak bites (great quality and cooked amazing) the mahi mahi tacos (used to be our go to and still one of our faves!) and the bleu cheese salad (which is always amazing and their pickled onions set it over the top!) This WAS one our favorite places to go. Ordered two tacos, a mahi mahi and a prawn taco. Also ordered the coconut shrimp appetizer. The coconut shrimp was the standard pre-made frozen variety, pretty disappointing. The mahi taco was okay and the prawn taco contained the same frozen deep fried shrimp as the coconut prawn. Norma Jean was our server, she is excellent at her job! We did not have a reservation and they were busy but they sat us right away. I had the beef short rib with mashed potatoes, my husband had butternut squash risotto with chicken, we were overwhelmed with the goodness. For dessert we had a house made s'more in a house made pastry shell and WOW! It was served with vanilla ice cream and house made graham cracker crumbs on a cedar plank sitting over a plate of 151 rum that was flambéed at the table. Came here when I was visiting family and friends. I was surprised by their hours, they close rather early even on the weekends (9pm). We walked in a little later in the evening and were seated almost immediately even without a reservation. Our server was quick to take our order and our food came out relatively fast. I ordered the short rib and it was slightly game-y but still good. My table mates ordered the steak and the risotto and both enjoyed their meals. Definitely worth dropping by. read more

Tried this place out on a whim. It was great they had some vegetarian option we tried the plant based burger and one of the pasta dishes along with the artisanal bread. It would be great if they can add some more vegan protein options.All three dishes were pretty good but the highlight was the blueberry cheesecake which is seasonal and definitely worth the calories . The ambience and service were also very welcoming. Will return to try their flourless chocolate cake sometime. read more

Went to HG for for some apps and drinks with my wife and 2 adult kids. The wife called ahead of time to ask if they have happy hour, to which they told her yes we do... Well little did we know it only counts if sit in the bar. Not happy with 2 drinks each and shared appetizers for $250. WOW! Ridiculous that they charge you more depending on where you sit. Won't be going back. Happy hour should count regardless of where you sit. read more

Great food and great feel! Had happy hour coconut prawns and griddle mac and cheese, a glass of Conundrum and Ceasar salad. The shrimp and dipping sauce were delish, the mac was super tasty and savory, the wine very smooth (got them let me blind taste a couple and chose a glass). Best part of my night though was my server Norma. What a wonderful server. What a pro, and what a friendly relaxed lady! Thanks Norma for making the end of my long work trip day! Had dinner here last night with a friend and was pleasantly surprised. Ambiance is a romantic candlelit setting with lots of wine and cocktail options and a fabulous seasonal dinner menu. All entrees sounded delicious but I settled on Pasta All'Amatriciana. The tomato sauce was a perfect blend of tart and savory. My friend went for the Braised Short Rib. The bourbon molasses gravy, the carrots, the mashed potatoes were a flavor explosion to pair with the juicy, fork tender short rib. We arrived just shortly after happy hour ended and had no reservation but were very lucky to get a table in the bar. I would recommend a reservation as it looks like this is a popular spot for couples. I recommend HG Bistro for your local date night. You should get there before 6, since their happy hour menu looks great. read more

Well first of all it took forever for our food to come. About 30 min, they blamed it on a chicken breast. How long does it take to cook a burger, then to add insult it came out cold. This has been a favorite of ours for so many years!! I remember when they would have live music in the bar. My husband and I started coming here for date night and the prices are great, the food AMAZING, the service so nice!! My only complaint would be the lighting. It's super dim!! I mean I like, I love the whole ambiance of the romantic date night setting but it's too dim. We also noticed some Filipino dishes on the menu so that's a major change. The creme brûlée is our FAVE!! They're always busy so you'll want to guarantee your spot. Everything on the menu is phenomenal, per our waitress. Usually I'll take this with a grain of salt, but wow, everything we got was perfect. Started off with a Bleu Salad, with candied walnuts. Can never go wrong with that. Then my boyfriend got the Short Ribs, my best friend got the Mac and cheese (added the crab, this is a must do!) And I got the yellow curry chicken. All of us were silent and finished our dishes with nothing left on our plates. Then we got dessert, their smores dessert is what they're known for. Served on a cedar plank and served on top of flaming 151, so rich! We also got the creme brulee, which was so creamy and sweet! There are many other things on their menu I want to try. I hadn't returned to this bistro since 2017... I decided to stop in after a long wait in traffic and wanted to kill some. It happened to be at happy hour (thank goodness) so the service was good, I highly recommend reservations, everyone walking in was asked if they had reservations. So If you don't come early expect to wait. The apps I ordered were as follows: Gorgonzola pear flat bread, calamari frites and blackened ahi tuna. The best; hands down were the calamari frites, pass on the rest. Since it was HH the cocktails were on HH prices and "Ok". Would I return? Only if HH is on and I'd go for the Calamari. read more

This has great food and great service. The waitress that was serving me, I think her name was Lisa was very attentive and very friendly during my visit. I tried 2 of the street tacos. One was mahi mahi fish taco and the other was the braised short rib taco. The short rib taco was the best! It had a lot more flavor. Then I went on to have the Pollo Negro. It was so good, soft easy to eat chicken and that sauce they put on it is very tasty. They also give you bread to go with it and I recommend dipping the bread on the sauce. It is so good. I was there to have the sliders initially but ended up getting something else on the menu. I'm definitely coming back soon to try them and the Mac n cheese. read more
