Because this kind of service is nearly impossible to find nowadays, I am a sucker for impeccable service. This place exceeds in service and I am definitely impressed by that. We came here via a Groupon. The odd thing was that... Apparently, when you have their Groupon, you have to call and make reservations... Which, I abided by. We came here on a Saturday afternoon with reservations and it was empty. Our table ordered the ham and cheese sandwich with tomato bisque, chipotle chicken burger with their Manhattan clam chowder, and the Reuben sandwich. Let me say, the clam chowder was one of the best. I expected the white, thick, creamy clam chowder... But to my pleasant surprise, it was a clearer broth than that. I loved every drop of the soup. Also, their tomato bisque was hearty, traditional, and one of the best. Their soups are right on point! However, I can't say the same for their sandwiches. My chicken chipotle sandwich had very tasty sauce... But the chicken was way too dry. I tried the ham and cheese and I really don't understand why they don't just use regular toast. A little constructive criticism - perhaps try using regular toast? And the meat in the Reuben was realllllllly dry like my chicken. :( I would come back again just for the soup and the awesome service. Our server, Erin was wonderful!!!! You seriously don't find such attentive and great service like this nowadays. Kudos to her! We will definitely be back for drinks and appetizers one day. My husband and I came here for an early Valentine's Day dinner the weekend before and made reservations. We were running early than expected and showed up about 30 minutes before our reservation and thought we would just check in and see if we could sit at the bar for a drink before. We were sat at the bar within 5 minutes and got a drink and then were taken to our table when it was ready. The food, drinks, atmosphere was fantastic! Our server gave us great recommendations and was always there when we needed her. We live nearby and drive by the restaurant all the time and have never come in but after our experience we will definitely be coming back! read more

Divine. Puyallup you're amazing me with your restaurants! Perfect time for a review of this restaurant especially with US open attendees. This bistro is warm and welcoming on the outside and in. Parking is convenient. Also, While waiting upon seating, you will notice a lot of space between tables, so you're not intruding in another's dinner. It's a nice added feature of the restaurant. Sunday and Monday is all day happy hour, so that gives you $3 off most of the dishes. It's hard not to want to get one of each on this restaurant's menu. We settled for the home made tortilla taco with wagyu beef, surf and turf plate, a chicken wrap, and fries. Get the taco, it is filled to the brim with fixings and juicy pieces of meat. Surf and turf plate: a glorious treasure with dungeness egg roll, coconut prawns, and filet steak. What Chicken wrap? The fries accompanying the wrap was the winner in this one! Delicious. So my first experience at HG wasn't all that great... however, I was pleased when I came back for a friend's birthday. I had this exquisite pork dish with asparagus and mashed potatos! I was in pork heaven. . . even my boyfriend was jealous of my dish. Our server was super friendly and even allowed us to open our own bottle of wine. He was very attentive and courteous. . . even had the bartender MAKE me a ginger ale... never had a ginger ale made for me before. I will definitely be coming again.... totally made up for my first experience. Not sure if it was because I came back during dinner time and the staff were just more lax or what. . . I hope to try lunch here again... I do love supporting local businesses and maybe they changed up the midday staff, or at least retrained them to be more accommodating with people who have gift certificates regardless if they use to accept them and no longer do :)... read more

We received a gift card and we're excited to use it. We called ahead for a reservation- they proceeded to make us wait 15 min after we got there and placed us in the bar area, rather than at a regular table. We had very loud and rude people sitting sooooo close to us. We were looking forward to a nice date night, but instead, were in way too close of confinement with foul mouthed people. The food was way too expensive. $40 for an ok steak that should have been $24. Our server was very kind, but the front desk people should know not to put people who call ahead for a reservation in the bar area. It was way too cramped, the food wasn't anything right write home about. We will not frequent this place again. Go to Tacoma if you want good food. read more

I decided to try out the HG for the second time, because my husband really wanted to. This is my new review with my previous review attached. HG Bistro, since I was last in, changed the print menu, which is much more navigable compared to their previous menu. The decor has not changed but they seemed to have added some sound baffling to the ceiling, because the atmosphere was decidedly quiet. I chose to order the blackened chicken, a shareable appetizer, which did go up in price, from my last visit, however, it was part of the HH menu options (which stands for Happy Hour) and apparently, Mondays are all day happy hour. The previous review mentioned that there was no way to share the blackened chicken... they have apparently added more bread to the appetizer (making it much more shareable), also they have started serving the chicken in acceptable sized pieces, that are manageable with either the bread provided or with a fork. There was still no salt or pepper for the table, but my food was flavored so well this time around, that it was not needed. The mac and cheese was was far less soupy and more gooey. It came out piping hot and with a beautiful crust on top. Overall, the food was excellent compared to my last visit, the service was better and the server, Robert, seemed far more knowledgeable, than my previous server. I have no idea if the management reads Yelp reviews, or if they simply upped their game, but the HG Bistro has redeemed itself in my eyes and deserves the two stars I added to my previous review. The cost for my meal was still high but I feel that the quality has gone up to justify it. I will now be frequenting this quirky/hipster bar, as often and unironically as I can, you should too! The following is my previous review and can be read for reference but should not be taken into account when deliberating on your restaurant choice as the restaurant is much improved now. I decided to try out the Hungry Goose, based on the other reviews and it's proximity to my Doctors office. I now realize that it has two different pages on Yelp, one listed as HGBistro and one as Hungry Goose. The first thing that struck me as odd was the fact that nowhere did it actually call itself the Hungry Goose, simply HG Bistro, which if we are being honest is both hipster and annoying because you aren't completely sure you are in the right place until you see the print menu. The decor is definitely new American as one would expect in this kind of Bistro. There are no booths, not that it matters but the chairs are not very comfortable, being all wood and metal. In fact, the place was all reclaimed wood, concrete, metal and gold accents, nice but a bit blazé and it lends a slightly aloof vibe to a place which otherwise seemed decent enough. The menu was the second thing that made me pause, rather than having an appetizers, chicken, beef etc. section it has the most odd layout, entitled "Shareables" which were priced from $6-20 dollars and then salads and finally "Knife and Fork", which consisted solely of obviously dinner option which ranged from $25-45 and there was no clear explanation as to why a pork taco, Beecher mac and cheese or blackened chicken was shareable at 9 dollars while beef stroganoff was not? It seemed that shareables are simply cheaper entrees and not actually shareable as the portions I received are not reminiscent of something that could or in effect, ever would be shared. There was also no way to share them as they seemed to lend themselves to singular consumption. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very businesslike and many of my co-diners were dressed business casual and seemed to hurry their meal as if on a quick lunch. The food came quickly and was hot and flavorful. I have no complaints about my food except that the chicken (blackened chicken from the shareable menu) was in stringy pieces, not small enough to bite but not big enough to warrant a knife, delicious but difficult to know how to eat. It was also in a bed of sauce but save using the complimentary bread as a sop, there was no way to consume the best part of the plate without appearing uncouth. There was neither salt nor pepper table side and the waitress while very efficient made me, a bold and outspoken woman, shy to ask for them, as if this might not be allowed in a place like this. The mac and cheese was soupy and made consumption difficult, made worse by the fact that fork was oddly shaped, having a spoon-like curvature and shorter tines than a dinner fork ever should but the weight and length was also a bit unwieldy. Overall, the food was good, the service was excellent, though strange somehow, and the cost was a bit absurd for what you received. I will not be going again but if hipster bars with expensive but tasty food are your jam, then this is your new place. read more

Great spot for a semi-casual sit down meal. Went with two others on a Sunday (happy hour all day!!) and we got the Quinoa Bowl, the Steak Salad, and the BLT. As a vegetarian, I was pleased to see that they had a lot of options available to be made vegan or vegetarian!! I ordered the quinoa bowl and was worried that it might be a bit bland but I was pleasantly surprised!! It was packed with flavor and super filling, great sized portion. Was told that the BLT was well above average and was packed with every ingredient (many places are stingy on the bacon - not the case here!!). The Steak salad had a similar review. Not sure if they messed my order up or what but I definitely didn't get a 12oz New York medium rare. It was well done and so tuff that my very sharp nice was struggling to cut it. It was in edible. The prawns on the side were juicy and seasoned perfectly. Mushrooms were good and the potatoes were ok they weren't seasoned really. Caesar salad was fresh but a bit on the small side. Cheesecake had blueberries that I don't believe are fresh and it didn't seem made in house. The crust was a nice change it was a almond crumble and if you like a smoother heavier cheesecake then this is for you. I prefer a light airy double whipped cheesecake. All in all maybe it's because I got food to go due to an exhausting week and not wanting to dress up to enjoy some fine dinning. Maybe I'll come back in person and have a better experience that way, but theirs lots of exceptional local foodie restaurants to try. Went here alone, table for one, I didn't have a reservation but the nice girl at the front fit me in, I told her I was a quick eater. I sat down and ordered the crab Rangoon egg rolls and they were the best I've ever had. The sauce that came with it was to die for too! Perfect combo. The ceaser salad was good with in house made croutons that were great. For dinner I ordered the lamb chop dinner, this is where it turned for the worse, I waited and waited and waited and my dinner never showed up, the waitress I had was also the bartender so 89% of her time was spent making drinks while I sat there with and empty cup. I asked about my meal and they said it was coming, once the bartender realized I still didn't have my food she went to the kitchen, well my food hadn't even started, I was getting real uncomfortable sitting there for that long, she offered me some bread while I waited which was also good. Finally my food came out and it was decent, the lamb chops were in pairs of two which I think they should all be cut separately as the steak knife could barely cut through by the bones attaching the ribs. The waitress must have been having a bad day because she was literally crying by some other table about how hard she was working. She did take of 50% of my tickets, so since she was having a bad day I tipped the 50% back to her as I could tell she was really busting her butt. *updated review* I have been in twice since my first review and have been so disappointed with the service that I don't think I can go back. The first night I came in with some girlfriends around 7. We sat in the bar had terrible service and then got a stare down by the bartender to leave because there were no other tables and they weren't even closed yet. It was so uncomfortable all four of us just said let's go. Then my husband and I decided to come in for dinner after we looked online and it read that the "last Seating" was at 10:30. We came in at 9:40 on a Friday and kindly asked the bartender if we could have a drink and a very quick bite to eat. She rolled her eyes at us and handed us menus. When the next gal came to our table we said that it states online that the last seating is at 10:30 and she told us no it depends on what time of year it is. Then don't post that online and treat the people whom ultimately pay your paycheck like crap. By the time she came around to take out order we just paid for our drinks and told her it was obvious by the way both girls had rolled their eyes at us that we were an annoyance and would not be eating. We left a nice tip and headed down the way for dinner. Won't be in again and it sucks because we had a great first time in and there is a ton of potential. I have known about HG and had heard mixed reviews forever, but had never made it In until we came in Last Sunday for all day happy hour. When I walked in I really liked the decor. We had kids with us and I didn't feel like it was to fancy to have them there but still somewhere we would want to eat as well. The hostess was friendly and we were sat promptly. I took my wife there for date night tonight; the biggest issue for me is why did I not know about this place sooner. The service was outstanding, we tried the braised pork tacos as an appetizer and I could live on those things. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich and the pork was very clean instead of a bunch of fat, the sauce was great, and she loved the fries. I had the lamb, it was truly amazing quality and anyone that likes lamb knows that is hard to find around here. Location is great actually coming from Sumner, 512, 410/Sumner Tapps, River Road & 167. Happy hour is my suggestion which starts at 230-6pm. Perfect time for late lunch or "linner" and you can try a little of everything! Skillet sauté seasonal mushrooms is a win no matter the time of the year. Mac and cheese skillet fulfills the indulgent desire of melted sharp cheddar. Twice dipped French fries are a standard. I can imagine their singular twice dipped qualities are accomplished by battering & frying one by one. No clumped fries! Really how is this done? Wagu beef sliders are adorable& bougie. So juicy and tender beef cooked to perfection (medium rare) on glossy pretzel slider buns. Today the grill was a pleasant forefront taste...like a Bougie Burger King! Looking for a classy, delicious meal in the south end, look no further. Better still, come in for one of the best happy hours around. The food here is perfect for special occasions, or romantic nights out, but you can still come by after work, or on a whim. It's that classy, yet still casual enough to be comfortable. And the food...omg, as they say. Never had a bad meal here, and the presentation is top notch. We were too busy enjoying our meal to take pics, sorry :P But I can highly recommend the pork belly salad, with fresh apple and candied pecans, which I expected to have a piece or two of pork on top, but to my delight, every time I dug in, I was rewarded with another perfectly cooked, crispy, flavorful little chunk of heaven. Also, the cilantro chicken gyoza were scrumptious (not a strong cilantro flavor at all, but absolutely delicious). Tacos...yum. Lots of great cocktails, but I love the Diablo, made with habanero vodka and pineapple juice. If you have room, share the s'more dessert, and ooh and aah at the fiery presentation. The decor is nice too; modern, yet dark and romantic, yet masculine enough to suit non romantics :P or families. Speaking of families, the bacon cheeseburger sliders are amazing, as are the fries, and there are plenty of options to suit kids and teens. Such a great place. Five stars, easily. If you visit HG Bistro, you must try the flaming s'mores dessert! I have had it twice within the past two weeks and this is my new favorite dessert of all time! Interestingly enough, I do not like s'mores.....the generic form that is. However, HG Bistro flaming s'mores is super unique.....but with the same overall ingredients. The main difference is YOU get to put the ingredients together how you want! Get a little vanilla ice cream, add some graham cracker crust crumbs with a little marsh mellow pastry drizzled with chocolate and you have the perfect spoonful.
