Went for brunch the Saturday before Xmas, and we were in for a treat! Five of us sat down immediately around 11:30am, no wait. Sit on the Hi Hat side; music softer and it feels less vacant, even if it's just as empty as next door. After substantial consideration of the menu (with more than enough options to satisfy the pickiest eater), we made our choices. The hits: Crab cakes were great -- nice and crabby, not too much filler, and the right size for what it cost. Rachel's (?) sandwich -- an open faced fried egg, tomato and cheese sandwich -- was delicious, well cooked and balanced. Pom-mosa (pomegranate mimosa) was surprisingly palatable, the pomegranate juice made it just tart enough. Banana pancakes were great. Slight miss: The biscuits and gravy -- the sausage used in the gravy was like pizza sausage, instead of breakfast sausage. The Italian seasoning and spiciness made it feel more like a savory lunch or dinner entree, instead of biscuits and gravy. Breakfast burrito was too spicy for general consumption (and I like spice; I typically add Tabasco or salsa to most breakfast/egg dishes). All in, it was about $23 per person, for an entree, an alcoholic beverage (mimosa), tax and tip. Food was good enough that I'd go back, and any shortcomings can probably be avoided by picking simpler fare (nothing too complex that could be messed up). Not a bargain, but reasonably priced enough that I could fork over the moolah without feeling swindled. Plus, the neighborhood is cute, and there's a parking lot across the street which is 25 cents an hour. All in all, worth another visit! read more

Only leaving one star as that's the minimum requirement. I was treated appallingly at this bar last night! I am from Wisconsin but now have a Connecticut drivers license, when I was in town visiting friends the doorman took my ID at the door and simply put it in his back pocket and told me to leave. I offered several more forms of identification with my name and DOB as well another form of photo identification. He proceed to pick at my drivers license and tell me it was peeling. He also continued to bend it back and forth while refusing to return it to me. We asked him to scan it to verify just so that I could have it returned and he again refused. When I told him I needed the license back for my flight the next day he told me I would need to call the police to get it back. In hindsight that's what I should have done while this man became aggressive and used his physical size to intimidate me and my friends. The manager came over and proceeded to bend my ID as well and although it did not break (BECAUSE ITS REAL) I was refused entry into the bar. I'm not mad I was denied but I think being treated that way as the bouncer let people in without checking ID's behind me deserves a review. read more

We stopped here for Happy Hour with coworkers from my wife's job, she's a teacher and today was her last day. Anyway, I had several very tasty craft beers which were great, my wife had a seltzer water, she's not a drinker. We were super hungry so we ordered some food. My wife ordered a Caesar Salad with chicken. The salad was good, my wife said there were way too many croutons and not enough salad, otherwise, she ate the lettuce and left the croutons. I got the Brady Burger with extra onions. The burger was a double burger cooked medium, it was pretty good, I split it with my wife. The burger comes with fries or tater tots. I asked for tater tots, well low and behold I got the fries. I didn't complain because I was starving. The fries were mediocre at best, but I needed food in my gut, so I ate them. One of my wife's coworkers mentioned that she had the tater tots and she said they were fried so hard there was no potato left in them, oh well I probably would have eaten them because I was starving. Anyway, I likely would come back because they have a nice ambiance and it was a beautiful day to be outside. The food while not great, was certainly edible. read more

Today I went there because I loved this place... new servers .. horrible service, my sisters food was wrong and when she got her right food 20 minutes after our food was whole. Great place for drinks, not so great for food. Waited 45 minutes for brunch just for two people (it was pretty dead inside mind you) and by the time it came out it was cold. Politely mentioned it to the bartender and she gave us a puzzled look like we were speaking another language. Food was subpar considering the wait and trouble. To further confirm this experience, I met up with some friends for a concert later that night who had also eaten at Garage that day and said their food took a substantial amount of time and was underwhelming. Maybe just an understaffed day but I doubt I'll be back for food. For the price there's much better places to eat even on Brady. Still a solid spot for drinks however. read more

Within the past week I've had their Bravocado sandwich and The Pocket (falafel), both with tots. Both sandwiches were very bland. Not much taste, lousy bread on the Bravocado, very bland falafel and tasteless hummus. Our friends had their BLT, which they picked at. It didn't look appetizing. Tater tots are nothing special. I stopped ordering their hummus years ago because it was so bland. Not sure what happened because years ago the food here was quite good. It can get really loud inside the bar (and damn cold when the AC is on). Karaoke night is a killer. Avoid at all costs unless you like bad singing....which is too bad cuz the DJ was playing some chill music beforehand. Drink specials are great. Service is friendly and their patio is lovely. So come for a drink and maybe some fries before grabbing dinner at one of the other very good restaurants in the area. I hope they devote some time to their kitchen and elevate it back to where it once was: a cool spot on Brady St. with a great patio and good food. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. It pains me to write this review--it really does. Hi Hat Garage was one of my first Milwaukee loves. Many a night started and ended at one or both of the bars. We used to bring our entire office in for Friday fish fry in the summer. It was one of my favorite happy hours in Milwaukee. I loved the brunch. The bar service was always reasonably good, and the food service was great even when the place was at capacity. The quality of the food was also excellent. I loved the menu. I had no reason to think any of that would change after the renovation, but changed it has, and not for the better. I love a place where putting an egg on a bacon cheeseburger makes it a breakfast food. I'm #blessed that Milwaukee has a few establishments like this, but HHG was always my favorite. The $5 bloodies and mimosas didn't hurt the cause, either. The first thing I noticed upon my post-rennovation return to HHG was that the burger of my affection had been renamed the "Ratchet Burger." For a place whose new sign switches from "GARAGE" to "RAGE" at a certain point in the night, perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. But just as the Garage may, in fact, be a great place to rage, and just as it may, in fact, be "ratchet" to eat a bacon cheeseburger before noon, these things are better left unsaid. Some things ARE better when explicitly stated, though... like menu options. Or your server's name. After waiting a LONG time for our (anonymous) server to stop by our table, we were met with very short answers and generally unfriendly service. When the food came after a LONG wait, my heart sank. Here was my favorite brunch burger, looking like a hockey puck, missing its caramelized onions, unceremoniously thrown into a basket with some greasy, bland breakfast potatoes topped with a rubbery, badly-overcooked fried egg and bacon so hard it hurt to chew. The food runner, sensing my dismay, asked if something was wrong. In a fit of hunger-induced exasperation, I said "pretty much everything." He took it back and a while later returned with the same burger patty, this time topped with a barely-cooked fried egg and the requisite caramelized onions. I ate it, but it was a far cry from the brunch burger glory of yore. If I end up at HHG again, it will not be of my own choosing. If you decided to check it out for yourself, be advised of the other changes I noticed that have coincided with the "renovation": -No more $5 mimosas -No substituting fries for breakfast potatoes -No wheat toast (maybe just that day, maybe permanently--our server was unclear) -No garnishes on the Hot Mess Bloodies anymore (lemon, lime and pickle do NOT count in this town. Give me a beef stick or give me...something else to drink because what, then, is the point?) Hopefully something changes here soon, because I would hate for this Brady St. hub to go the direction it seems to be headed. PS- I also miss the trees. read more

The revamp looks nice, I'll give them that, but the overall management/service needs an upgrade. I've gone to the "new" Garage twice now and both times left a lot to be desired. Let's start with the first impression, the hostesses. Both times I've been there I was "greeted" by hostesses who seem to either completely empathetic or incompetent. Last night when the hostess was bussing a table she dropped the signed credit card slip. My wife went back to her to help her out and received the most dead look back, no thank you for saving my a$$, no acknowledgement, just a blank look. Both times that I went to the Garage we could not be seated on the side patio. The first time they were "full" at brunch despite there being a few open tables and last night we were told they weren't having servers out there (lame). The first time we went they were out of the first beer I ordered. No problem, it happens. Last night they were out of 4-5 beers. They claimed it was because of the World Cup and didn't expect to be busy. Hello, this isn't your first time being around for the World Cup and you've had 4 years to prepare. I felt bad for our server who was also clearly annoyed with the situation. Ok, the food.... At brunch, it took FOREVER to receive our food and of course it was then cold. Because we rarely saw our server and we were starving, we just ate it. Last night we shared a few apps. The wings were very good. Heck, those and the decor are probably the only reasons this isn't a 1 star review (also, our server last night was good). The hummus was ok, but too much paprika. The tots were good, but it's hard to screw up tots unless you try to make them in house and your name rhymes with calamino. I want to like the Garage again, I really do. After the World Cup is over, I plan on giving them another shot and eating at the bar. Keep your fingers crossed for me that they'll actually have the beer I order. read more

A favorite of my hubby, so I find myself at this place when I'm in the Brady area. I went to the Garage side just the other night, they reopened just recently after a remodel - I like the openness - it always felt that the patio was so separate when they first opened it - so now it seems to have a better flow. I was in for happy hour which meant taps were half off, yes please! They had a pretty decent selection which had something for almost everyone. I had the Balzac Burger with tots. Woah it was a pretty darn good burger. Very moist, wonderfully sweet caramelized onions, flavorful peppercorn aioli, I had provolone on mine which was melted to perfection, on the perfect breadsmith bun (I'm very picky about burger buns, this one was perfect for it, right size, didn't get soggy, right proportion, and tasty by itself). The tots were also good, but I should have ordered the fries - they were the thick cut steak fries, but double fried - oh yum! Our waitress was very attentive which was great and even closed the garage door window when we got cold. I've also enjoyed drinks on the patio and drinks at HiHat. I think it's a pretty easy place to go and then decide what mood you're in since they have a little bit of everything. read more

I try to get over the fact that the service sucks here, but each time I go, I'm reminded how awful it really is. The atmosphere is quite redeeming, but overall, it's not enough to win me over. Since the revamp, it's almost been worse. (Hint: if you're going to double the size of the bar, I suggest you staff it with twice as many bartenders for a Saturday night. Let alone, ones that don't work at a snail's pace!) I've previously worked in the service industry, and also know the importance of manners, and it seems like a lot of the employees lack that knowledge. For instance, I approached the host stand and said hello, only to get no response (not sure if the blank stare counted as a response) from the three hostesses. When I asked for a table for two, a hostess grabbed menus and took us to an outdoor table nearby. (Still no verbal communication at this point.) Our waitress wasn't much better. She looked like she hated her life and acted like it, too. I get it, it's hard to be chipper 24/7 when you've probably been working a really long shift, but there's no reason to be rude and snippy. Perhaps the service industry isn't for you then, sweetheart. The food was mediocre. I ordered the build-you-own-burger and got the veggie burger. It had lots of flavor and a slight kick to it, but you could tell it was slapped together in 2 seconds. The cheese wasn't even completely melted, the browning lettuce looked like it was out of a bag, and I got 2 small pieces of onion for the whole burger. I also ordered avocado on it, which was the brownish-green mush on top of the burger. The fries were hot and crispy, though, so thumbs up! Needless to say (for real this time!), I don't think I'll be returning for the food and/or if I want standard service. The only time I'd come here is for a casual Fri/Sat night sitting on the patio. I hear so many people complaining about the service at Garage, so hopefully they'll be responsive to reviews. read more

Ended up here yesterday for a quick drink. The garage opening lured me in as I was the leader of the pack, and therefore the decision maker. I'm glad I chose this place. The interior is pretty neat- the trees that are inside give it an outside and airy feel. The decor of this place won me over pretty much immediately. Our server was adorable and attentive and suggested a Milwaukee beer that I actually liked. The local brews seemed to be heavy on the IPA which is a no-no for me so I was glad I didn't have to resort to the Hooegarden or Strongbow (which they both have on draft) and could go local. He ended up suggesting the amber Lakefront. On a random Sunday afternoon, this place had the right amount of patrons for an afternoon drink. Lots of the bars in this area seemed dungeon like to me, so if you need some air and good beer, check it! read more

Hi, Hi Hat Garage! It's been awhile since I last visited - and I gotta tell ya, I'm happy I joined a few friends last week for happy hour. I'm forgetting the day it was - but the special was $6 Ramen. WHOA. A fresh, delicious, hot, big bowl of Ramen with pork was in my belly and I was oh so happy. I even had enough for leftovers the next day. MMM. They also have a new patio area that I wasn't aware of, and was quite digging it. I have a sort of love-hate relationship with this place. There's much more love than hate, I can tell you that. LOVE Hi Hat/Garage for happy hour and brunch. Their food and drink specials make it a go-to place for both. Great patio seating, and even great indoor-outdoor seating at the Garage is great for those super hot summer days. Great ambiance, and I love the projection screen going. DISLIKE this place in the whole bar/late night scene. It gets way too crowded. I avoid it all together these days because I can't seem to squeeze myself in. Can't a girl get her bubble??? I would way rather go somewhere a bit more chill. read more

This past Memorial Day Sunday was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and there was a kite festival on the lake. Hundreds of families and children were out in Veteran's Park, crashing their kites and getting them stuck in trees, and generally feeding my amusement. My hunger wasn't satisfied, however, and the sunburn I acquired required me to regain some energy before I went to the nerd watering hole that is 42 Ale House later that day. Looking at the 60 foot octopus kite in the sky, I thought to myself, "I could really go for a Bloody Mary right now." A friend suggested we head to Hi Hat Garage, and I complied, reminiscing back to the good old days when I actually had a social life and went there for brunch with chums long gone. So, over to Brady Street we went, and as soon as we sat down outside, I was reminded by the incessant honking of a car alarm how happy I am to live in Bayview, and not the East Side. No matter. We ordered our bloodies and beermosas, and, for how busy it seemed, they came out quickly. Garnished nicely with cheese and meat (the only two food groups I need in life), it was so delicious, and surprisingly refreshing. Not too spicy, but not blandly mild. A perfect balance of flavor. If I didn't have to work later, I would have had another one. I had a burger as well, and it wasn't amazing, but definitely not bad. Next time I'll order some real brunch food there and see how it fares. Overall, it was a very chill experience, and I was happy to be outside with friends. I always enjoyed Hi Hat/Garage's nightlife, and now I can say the daytime version is just as nice. read more

This place is very unique. The trees, and vines everywhere is something I haven't seen inside a bar in Milwaukee before. They also have really great deals. When I went on a Monday it was $1 mystery beers. I thought this was very creative. All different beers came out wrapped in a paper bag. I also like that hence the name, they have a garage door that can be opened in the summer. So even if it rains, you can still be indoors while experiencing the warm weather. The bathrooms were clean when I went there, and the guys bathroom has a two way mirror to see the bar. Veryyyy interesting I have heard. The waitress my large, loud group worked with was very accommodating and split our checks for us. There food is a little expensive but they have good dips. The parking is a hassle, so I would suggest taking the bus, bike, are walking. read more

So in fairness, I only eat here for brunch. The food is okay. I would say good to okay depending on what you're getting. Sometimes it just lacks flavor. Unfortunately, what really detracts from a 4 star is the service has been EXTREMELY slow every time I've gone here. I'm talking 15 minutes for your server to come acknowledge you and give you some water. I've spent an hour waiting for some eggs and french toast. I really really wanted to like this place, but I just can't bring myself to give it a better review. The pluses are a nice atmosphere and the outdoor patio. Pros: Great patio seating and good fries. Cons: Staff made my friend and I feel like we were a burden. Waitress was condescending and spoke under her breathe to the point that I didn't even know she wast talking to me. I got the impression that she hates life, if that paints you a picture. Mind you, we were in no rush, but upon receiving our food from the kitchen staff she casually sauntered over 5mins later and notices we have no caddy or napkins. Takes another 10mins for napkins. Meanwhile I just grab some from an empty table. I literally felt like I was serving myself. I don't expect the moon from servers or even a smile but common courtesy and a helpful attitude should go without saying. read more

Usually crammed on the weekends, but it's pretty subdued on random nights and for brunch. Even when it's jammed, it's not as bad as Jo-Cats across the street. The food is decent, depending. The fish fry didn't do it for me, but I really love the brunch, and the hangar steak on the weekends is top notch. They also have a pretty good selection of taps. The tenders and servers are usually friendly if it's not really busy, and it's not hard to become a regular. To summarize: meat market on the weekends, chill otherwise. It almost seemed that the coach turned into a pumpkin at Midnight when I first visited Hi Hat Garage. I arrived around 8, had a decent sandwich with some queso fundito that was so enjoyable it made my face hurt a little. Service was fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed the exchanges with our bartender and then the wheels seemed to fall off of the vehicle. By 10pm, it seemed like every jag in the city started gathering to outdo one another. I see a few others felt the same way that I did as I saw "chachi" and "frat boys" mentioned in other reviews. I generally don't complain about an establishment's clientele very often unless I'm personally uncomfortable at a place. I ended up walking out that night swearing that I'd never subject myself to the crowd there after 10 again. I enjoyed the food enough to return though. Gave brunch a shot a few weeks later and had a much better experience. The bloody marys (even though mine was a virgin) are well worth the price of admission alone. They really have a knack of turning them into an enjoyable event...now, if they could only find a way to turn their evening clientele into a similar experience. read more

So I don't go out much but when I do it's usually Tuesday's because "Almost everything is 1/2 off" at this establishment on that night... So to my surprise I go out last night under the impression that's still how it was, get my bill and I've paid $76 for 8 shots of Hennessy and a PBR... I ask the bartender like what happened to half off!? She points to a small sign under the TV... I'm like seriously!? If you're gonna change something about your establishment that's a major attraction for customers make sure that majority broadcasted so customers are aware before making purchases!!! I thought that was absolutely absurd that I was not made aware of this until I looked at my bill!!! I've been going out a long time and have never spent that much money in a bar!!! Then the bartender asks "Didn't they tell you at the door?" I said no!!! All they wanted was ID, when I'm like 15yrs older than the doorman lol that was funny but seriously what I spent in there, I will never be bakk be and the lack of notification to patrons is completely bull shit!!! I want to like this place so much, I really do... I like coming here for drinks, but foodwise, it's either a great time, or horrible. We were standing at the host stand for 10+ minutes without anybody saying a word to us. It was abandoned. Two waitresses came by, and didn't say anything to us. Not even a "someone will be with you in a moment" We tried coming in l for ramen, and were told there was only enough for one order. It was later in the evening, so we weren't too upset by it, so we told the waitress that it'd be a few minutes while we looked at the menu. One of my friends ordered the last ramen and a drink, and my other friend ordered a beer, and after a few minutes, the waitress came back to tell us that there wasn't actually any ramen left, and that one of the beers ordered was out of stock as well. These things happen, so we told her that we needed a few minutes to decide if we wanted to stay, since we really came for the ramen, and she seemed understanding... Then she came back 3 minutes later with the drink my friend had ordered, even though we just told her we didn't think we were going to stay. No. Don't do that. Ever. You piss us off, since we don't even want to be here, and you screw yourself because now you have a four top that's going to be there for another 15-20 minutes, with a one beer tab. -__- I've been here other times, and had fantastic service, and good food... I just wish it wasn't a 50/50 gamble every time. I think from now on, I'm just going to request certain servers, and if they aren't there, I won't be either. read more

This Sunday I had brunch at Hi Hat on the sidewalk and ordered the biscuits and gravy and a beermosa. The service was good and the drink was fine but the food was not good at all. The potatoes were basic and not very appealing. It seemed like they had been sitting a while. They were all dried out and did not have much flavor, so I used ketchup to get them down. The biscuits were also dry and also crunchy. The biscuits and gravy at Perkins are far better. Their biscuits are bigger and lighter and you can see the steam from them being baked fresh rising up from them. The biscuits at Hi Hat were terrible. The cheese on top was burned in place and hard. Finally the sausage gravy hardly had any flavor. I am not excited about eating there again. I'd easily get a better breakfast at George Webb. read more

Dear Garage, It's not that I don't like change. I do. But I only really like good change. I was hopeful (but a bit skeptical) that the renovations would at least keep the character and feel of the Garage. Unfortunately, however, that character is gone, replaced by generic "communal" picnic tables, a notable lack of indoor trees, a trendy open bar, two big flat screen TVs, no owl statues or pictures that I could see, and a bustling population of bros during happy hour. (I expect them at night, but not as much during the day.) For seven years, the Garage was the neighborhood favorite of me, my friends, my partner, and out of town guests. It simply felt good to be there. Now, I'm not so sure. I only hope that Marisa et. al. can handle the new onslaught of bros. Since the waitstaff and bartenders are sensational, it's no doubt that they can--but it's a shame that they'll have to. read more

This place is alright. It's clean, has a wide variety and selection of drinks, and a cool atmosphere. I particularly like Hi Hat for drinks. We went for a later dinner on Friday night. I thought the cocktail menu was a little limited in variety. I chose the basil drink, it was okay. I got a veggie burger (this is a premade patty, probably garden burger). It was fine. Good texture. One of my first nightlife experiences here in MKE. My best friend and I went out to get a drink, and while this place has a cool vibe, we probability should've gone somewhere where the music was a tad quieter. That being said, I've frequented this place a couple of times since, and for night life it's definitely catered more to a get-totally-wasted event. I've gone for lunch before as well, and eating outside anywhere in the summer is always a plus, this place being no exception. Oh, this place is just fine. I came around 10:30 on a Saturday night, and it was busy, as to be expected. They are joined with the garage, just two different sides of the same building. There is an upstairs at Hi Hat, but there is no bar, which is annoying to have to go downstairs to get a drink. There are tables to sit at, and it is cool to be able to look over the railing to the rest of the bar below. They have a decent selection of beer and the bartenders are pretty quick. I have also had the breakfast here and was unimpressed. If I have to go out on Brady on a weekend night, this is definitely one of the places I would choose on purpose. read more
