Was in Milwaukee for a wedding, so this is a one trip review I was starving the morning after the reception, and pulled in here because it looked interesting. Cool place, and the inside didn't disappoint on the interesting factor when I went for a looksie Sat outside though. Food was great, Service was friendly and cool. Their Monday Service Industry brunch, (see pic) had the Herbed Tofu & Grilled Veg scramble (Tofu scrambled with grilled zucchini, yellow squash, poblano peppers with toast, and breakfast potatoes) and added sides of bacon and Canadian bacon. Look, I don't usually rate low. People and places have off days and I know how important servers are and I've been one and it is a tough job that usually goes unappreciated. But my companions (who have all been or are waiters or bartenders around milwaukee) and I were specifically told by our waiter "go yelp about it if you want to complain," when we tried to talk to him about how we were feeling, so, here I am. There's a long list of interesting moments from our experience at Garage, but I'll keep this review more to the point. (A) A ranch was spilled all over one of us. Totally fine and probably an accident...until the waiter laughed, didn't bring a new ranch, didn't help clean, didn't acknowledge anything had happened, nothing. This stuff happens all the time and is normal, but a simple "whoops" or "sorry" was never muttered so it is just a strange moment. (B) every time we would try to order, our waiter would randomly leave our table and not get everyone's order. I'm not talking like needed to go to do something else after helping us, but literally full on rushing away while one of us would be mid sentence. This happened so many time we literally started betting on when it would happen again. We also would see him shooting the shit with other staff right after the rushing away so it just felt weird we couldn't get our orders fully out of our mouths. (C) i ordered two drinks total, one right after and a second about an hour in. When I ordered my second, I was not done with my first (side point: it would take a long time to get drinks or food, which is fine because it's busy but that's why I ordered a second when I did) and there was still a decent amount in it. Waiter took it. I said wait don't take that, but he was already off, rushing away. Honestly there's a lot more that happened that was just off and weird. Also, we come to this establishment all the time and have never had an experience like this. We tried our best to be nice in the moment but it just became worse and worse every moment we were there. Like I said at the start of this review, when we did try to mention something was off, we were told to yelp about it instead of any closure or anything. Even while I type it, I feel bad for the low rating, but it was honestly awful. I'm sure I'll be back to Garage, I just maybe will only sit at the bar from now on. And who knows, maybe it was just an off night for people involved, but all 8 or 9 of us that I was with felt the same way and so maybe not. read more

I always love the Hi Hat garage. I mean, it's got such an awesome vibe of fun and funky, hip and relaxed, and the food is great! Recently I hit up a Monday for the specials - specifically, the $5 burger that (gasp) came with fries or tots! What a deal! It was a warm muggy night so we were out on the patio. A beer sounded good but I don't drink alcohol so I opted for an NA beer our server recommended and it was delicious - crisp and refreshing. Totally hit the spot! I got the blue pig burger - a tasty combination of beef, bleu cheese, bacon, apple, and a honey-mustard sauce. It was served on a grilled bun which was tasty. The tots were plentiful and a great side. So for about $10 I got a great meal with a drink to boot, fun in a great atmosphere. What a deal! Heck yeah, I'd do it again in a heartbeat! read more

This place has some pretty tasty food! I have dined here a couple of times and have picked some very solid items that I can say I love. Yesterday I ordered the BLAAT and it was just as delicious as the last first time. They take bacon, lettuce, avocado, apples, tomatoes and garlic honey mustard and put it between two deliciously-airy slices of light wheat bread. This sandwich is my jam! An elegant update to a classic packed with so many fresh and delicious flavors. I also ordered the art dip which comes served with crostini. This appetizer comes with a good amount and is beautifully rich so splitting between two was sufficient. Service was good, our server/bartender was very nice. Drinks are alright so I give em a four star for that but otherwise their food is consistent and I would highly recommend this spot for your pub style grub. read more

In my few years of living in Milwaukee, I've gone to the Garage more times than I can count. Not because the food is particularly good (it's fine at best) but because it's a great anytime hangout spot on the East side. Great patio in the summer, good happy hour specials. I do the Garage when I need something easy. It's a college-y bar first, restaurant second. That being said, they have a Weds night ramen special people seem to enjoy. My friend got it. Revamp? Yup, they've recently remodeled the space, so I think an update is (finally) in order! The space is now brighter and cleaner and is more conducive to groups. I like it! It's sort of like a more grown-up version of the old Garage. We visited just two days after they re-opened after being closed for six weeks for a solid overhaul/remodel. Good on you for doing that, ownership. The Garage has been around for a long time, and in order to stay relevant, sometimes you need to reinvent yourself. Not that the Garage has reinvented itself per se; it hasn't, really, as best I can tell. It's still concrete cool, but the layout's a little different. The bar's been moved. Windows have been added. It's so fresh and so clean, a la Outkast. Happy hour specials seemed pretty decent: half priced taps and five dollar wings. (I opted for a Lakefront IPA, which has become my go to as of late.) I didn't partake on the food tip, so I can't speak to that... though it was surprisingly crowded for a Tuesday happy hour, but given that they've been closed for awhile and have a great location (and great patio) on Brady, the busy makes sense. I can't, in good faith, throw down more than three stars for now, but I will return and spend more money (and order food!) in order to formulate a more accurate opinion. In fact, I'll be there again soon... my friend's got a going away party there this weekend! Maybe part of my hesitation to be a true "fan" of the Hi Hat and Garage has to do with the fact that it seems cool in this sort of generic way that's just cool enough but still caters to everyone... bros and pros, top 40 lovers, hipsters, punks, and higher than high heel-clad ladies. It's 21 year-olds to 51 year-olds... not that I care one way or another, I guess what I'm saying is that I just can't get a beat on this establishment's collective identity. We were walking around on a rainy Saturday and stopped in for a beer. Sitting at the bar, soccer was on TV and the service was attentive. The beer selection was good and we looked at the food menu and decided to return the next day for brunch. On the Sunday, for brunch, we were seated upstairs and we each ordered something different. I had the pulled pork biscuits and gravy and it easily held me over until dinner. The taste was great and I would get it again. Unfortunately, I left my credit card there and called the next afternoon to see if they had it. After searching through a large stack of cards, the bartender said he had mine. Yep - went there for a 3rd day in a row! I retrieved my card and it happened to be happy hour and I got a Spotted Cow for $2.50. We didn't sit outside, but have in the past. This place is completely overrated, I can honestly say I've given more than enough chances which is why I'm so sad to write this review. I had high hopes after the remodel and I've had many amazing evenings on the patio but if it comes up ever again that we should spend our money here it will most likely be a firm no. The most unfortunate part about this review is that it has nothing to do with the establishment itself but entirely it's staffers. These are the same employees I know have been there for years because I too have been going to this establishment for years. They are the sole reason I refuse to go back. If I was the business owner I highly recommend reviewing your staff and their behavior. Hate to break it down like this but there is one particular manager that has ruined my experience on multiple occasions, he has big side burns and he use to work at Industry(?)but got fired. His response to complaints, requests, or questions has been so rude that I leave with my jaw still on the floor. There are a lot of people that have been very kind to me and they should get a shout out, the GM, I think his name is Gary(?), very friendly. There's a server she has blonde hair and blue gauges, she also works at Bel Aire, she's really great. Marissa I think her name is, been my server 100 times. Doesn't matter how much we've had to drink or what kind of requests we have; she smiles, sets down a coaster, and obliges. There's also two bartenders that are very efficient and kind; one is a lady with darker hair and glasses and one is a taller guy with brownish hair, both are very kind and always count my money back to me. These people need some recognition. So sad to say but I just can't spend another dollar here until I know that one manager is gone, he has no place in the service industry. read more

Came in last night for the Sad Boy Saturday DJ set and I've never had a worse experience with a bartender/server in my entire life. The bartender with the blue hair was incredibly rude to me from the moment I ordered my first drink. I showed up sober from a long shift working the events all day, I was in a good mood and kind. I tipped well on every drink I got. I had no idea why she was being rude to me. Finally my girlfriend asked why she hated me and the response was that "my aura was dark" it certainly must've been darker when I left 2 hours earlier than planned because I felt so unwelcome as a paying customer. It was the big matchup between the Cowboys and the Packers. I knew it would be a big game. When I came into town, I said, lets just hang out at the hotel bar. (pathetic, I know) but my friends were like no, were going to Brady Street. I'm so glad I was forced to... it was super fun and immersed me into the Packers Nation. I am a fan but didn't want to deal with all the hubbub or Brady, after looking at a few bars, I suggested Hi-Hat Garage. We walked in and there was no tables to be seen. When asked the host said I've got a great table for you. Yes, it was great and the food, service and atmosphere was too. I live in Denver where a good cocktail is $20.00 bucks, drinks were cheap, food was great, service was excellent and it was a great vibe. We ordered a good 10 things from the menu and had 10 drinks... it came to only $126 bucks..... cheap. Denver is super cool, but I have to say, Milwaukee is cooler on so many levels. We used to go here occasionally for brunch because a few friends were servers there. Terrible food, fun staff, standard drinks. Since then, we've visited a few times and things have gotten progressively worse. Today was the worst: we were there a group of 6 and the guy server literally couldn't get anything right. Bad attitude, didn't remember drink orders, and at the end instead of closing our tab brought us another round and insisted that we had ordered it. By the end of it all my husband closed and the guy apparently said "I just want him out of here" when we asked about the bill. It's really gotten bottom of the barrel here. read more

I normally do not "go out" on Brady Street unless it is to eat. I would frequent Hi Hat and Garage pretty regularly in my younger, less tired days.... Seems like ages ago but it was not. Hi Hat and Garage were always busy, like at capacity busy, on Friday and Saturday nights and the music was blaring. My most recent visit was a random drop in. Friends and I just finished eating dinner nearby and I stopped in to see if a friend was working. Joe R and I decided to relax and digest before going home, in order to avoid the dreaded food coma. We went down the stairs and sat at the bar. We were the only ones inside....I had seen that there were several diners outside so it wasn't creepy. We both ordered a whiskey old fashioned press. Oh. My. Goodness. This bartender made the absolute best Old Fashioned we ever had (it was at least in the top 2!!). I sadly can't remember his name, but I would go back just to get another drink from him. We started chatting with the bartender and he was telling us about the new service they have, where you can purchase a bottle of whiskey and it is kept and locked up for you at the bar. If you have never been to the HiHat side of this establishment, there is very limited lighting especially downstairs. We were here early evening and I felt like a vampire going up the stairs, to the exit, and emerging into the light. I will definitely need to come back for lunch/dinner. I was completely unaware they served food until a couple months ago. I have heard good things about it too, so I need to check it out and review it for myself :P Between my previous visits and my most recent, I'd have to give this place 3 stars... Most recent visit vs past visits: Drink = 5+ stars; normal drinks are pretty average, like a 3. Service = 5+ stars; when it is busy I'd say it is a 3. Ambiance = when you are here and it is not busy, I'd go with a 4.... when it's busy it is more like a 2 between the crowd and the loud music. Drink price = 3 stars (I did not mind paying for the AMAZING Old Fashioned, normal mixed drinks are on the pricier side). We were seated outside the other night, and I don't think I've ever had a more disappointing dining experience. We had a group of 4, and it took around 30 minutes to put our order in, and get a beer. The food took over an hour to come out, and the restaurant was less than half full. The food was burnt, and we were told we wouldn't be charged for any of it (they charged us). We were there for well over 2 hours, and I didn't get to eat . If your kitchen is that understaffed, just close it for the night. All of the customers around us were getting their meals comped as well.... read more

I recently saw that the Garage re-opened last week, so I wanted to stop by and check it out. Then, when I heard burgers were half price on Mondays, I knew that would be my night......after all, I am the Burger King of Milwaukee. (self proclaimed, but i might try to roll with that) I stopped in around 6 on a Monday and was greeted very quickly. This will be a recurring theme of my visit, as the service was outstanding. I was welcomed, notified of the specials, and offered drinks within mere seconds of sitting down. Waiter came by quickly and offered some more information on the specials, and I decided to go with the Pioneer burger, minus the jalapenos. When the burger showed up, I was pleasantly surprised with how big it was. I guess I expected this to be some sort of run of the mill bar.....that dabbled in food...but I think I was wrong. The burger was cooked to perfection. I will say that the burger was extremely messy. Probably a bit too many onions and bbq sauce....and I'm not sure if it was just an extremely juicy burger or what but the bottom bun was completely saturated and fell apart right away. The bbq sauce was also way too hot/spicy for my liking, but I put it away like a pro. Not the best burger in town, but maybe one of the better ones near Brady Street. I'm sure I'll go back....but only on half price burger nights, as I don't feel the burger was worth $10. read more

After a 3rd bad experience, I've decided I can no longer give the Garage my business. I have many of the same feelings I had in my first review but it got worse each time we went. Therefore, they only deserve 1 star. Though food is good, it is a bit over priced - especially their drinks. What really is the main reason for not going back or recommending this place was the terrible service. Each time our server was inattentive and lacked personality. All 3 times we had to flag another person down 1. To ask where our server even went and 2. To get simple things like silverware. The HiHat and the Garage are owned by the same, yet I have two very different perspectives on them. Bare with me, as I try to wrangle with this review for a rating. One star: poor service at HiHat, pricey drinks. Consensus made due to multiple occurrences with wrong orders, late orders, and completely ignored, etc. service is somehow better at the Garage, but pricing is still $$. It is typical for Brady bars to either be cheap or expensive, so I can level with the idea of not giving a one star rating. Two stars: If you aren't on the patio, the music is so loud in the Garage that sometimes I can't hear what the person next to me is saying, which is usually, "I can't hear you." Good luck getting a drink at the Garage during busy times. Sometimes, the HiHat is too dim for me, making me feel claustrophobic. The bartenders are usually nice, so I'll hold off on the two stars. Three stars: the Moscow mules are not served in a copper mug, if you sit on the patio. The food is hit or miss. Ramen Wednesday's are hit or miss. Four stars: The patio. The location. Food and drink daily specials. Some of them are worth it. Half off burgers on Mondays! Five stars: ? I have decided to rate the establishment three stars. Three stars means average, hit or miss, and a-okay! It's a great place to meet up with a group of friends, but the mood can easily change with unlucky service and food. read more

Classic 3.5 rating. Good food, frustratingly slow friendly service. Nice tap beer prices. Brunch BLT much smaller than old picture of normal hours one. Once the lake breeze made it through the garage door, comfortable seating, dang hot prebreeze. Methinks should have had extra bartender for The 4th brunch service. Rough for them, and they made sure to treat the regulars well, where I haven't eaten here, well, ever,, though did Hi-Hat a bunch in the early years. And post-brunch, the place went from damn near full, to damn near empty, so need flexible work hours for young single employee down the street needed. BLT and potatoes were very much to my liking. So I thing if I make a normal service soon, will get 4 stars, but didn't earn it quite yet. read more

I am feeling this place! Stopped in on a Monday night, which happened to be half off for burgers. Winning! The interior is really dim which could mean intimate? Here, prob not! The vibe is hipster and it works. The bar is towards the rear and in the middle of the floor. It separates the opposite side which I didn't venture to and the entrance to the patio/outdoor space. Fellas... the bathroom set up is quite weird. The urinal is one long urinal that im guess 3 people could stand in and wiz away? No divider, no privacy. I can just imagine how that could be problematic for a bloke who has had one to many and is sharing the urinal with 3 other gents. Be warned! Our server was really nice and accommodating. It was really busy so she did her best to stay on top of her tables. We were happy to see that the burgers were on special. We also found out that rail drinks were also on special. Double winning right? Right! We ordered the following burgers: the brunch, the great Scott, the works, the pioneer and the Balzac substituted with a chicken breast. I don't eat beef but hot dam those burgers smelled fire! I had the chicken which was good seasoned well and not dry at all. I also order the tater tots that reminded me of school lunch. Be honest who didn't eat the tots at lunch and then as their friend to trade their milk for more tots? Every one was so stuffed at our table. The fries were also on point. They were battered fries which is always welcomed in my book. I like to eat food that does not taste like its frozen thawed and then cooked. This food didn't taste that way. We decided that if we go out to eat on a Monday this would be the place to go. I can't give it a 5 because I would need to try other foods and go on other nights. But for now it is a solid 4 star. I have eaten at The Garage several times for brunch...which has always been amazing. Rosemary potatoes best I've ever had. Thought I would try the dinner menu. WHAT A MISTAKE. I had the Mac and cheese with chicken which was BLAND AND TASTELESS! I think it was chicken, it could have been tofu because of lack of seasoning of chicken. My friend had pulled pork which was dry. Plate was presented sloppily. I also ordered a whiskey old fashioned! PLEASE INSTRUCT YOUR BARTENDERS HOW TO MAKE ONE! I seriously am not a food critic or complainer. This, in fact, is my first yelp review! This was such a disappointment and embarrassing since my friend had never been to the Garage and I raved about it. Some friends and I went to the Garage to watch the Badgers make it to the Final Four for the second year in a row (what whaaaaat!!). The space is cool and had adequate televisions for not being a sports bar, per se. Drinks were decently priced as was the food. Jalapeno cheese curds were definitely a new experience! Issue with the place: service. It was beyond slow. I know it was a busy Saturday evening with semi-rowdy Badger fans, but our waitress seemed to just come by once every hour. We never got a food menu even though we were there from 4p to 7:30p, so we had to beg a food menu off a neighboring table and then track down our waitress to order. Overall, it was a fine experience to watch my beloved Badgers take down Arizona. I'm not craving to get back, but I wouldn't be avoiding it by any means. The happy hour deal here in incredible, but the service is sometimes slow. If you have the time and patience, I definitely recommend Garage for eating, drinks, or watching the game. They have a nice large bar and an excellent beer selection. In addition, they are very accommodating. The service was honestly horrible. The way some staff spoke to my group was wildly inappropriate and uncalled for. They walked up to my group 40 minutes before bar close saying to "get the f*** out." It felt like they assumed all patrons were drunk and acted like they could treat them as inferior. A worker walked up to a guy in my group and asked him if he wanted to fight because I questioned why they were telling us to leave so much earlier than bar close. I don't see why any worker would ask a patron to fight. The staff seemed inexperienced, power hungry, and incompetent. read more
