We absolutely love stopping at Hi-Mountain for the Philly Cheeseburgers, the Black Licorice and Cinnamon shakes. There's a wait when busy, but well worth it. Love the small town charm. This is always a must stop for us, when we're here. read more

They serve a bison burger (locally sourced bison) on Fridays only that is out of this world! Tender, flavorful, served medium-rare with a touch of horseradish in the dressing somewhere. It's fairly large, and my wife and I thought we could share one, but next time, she's not getting half of mine! She said the same. We both had an excellent shake (the cherry chocolate was really good), and it's possible we ate too much ice cream, so next time, it's separate burgers and a shared shake. And don't forget the fries. Hand cut on site every morning. It just don't get much better than this. And we enjoyed the funky, old fashioned drug-store atmosphere. But shhhh, don't tell anybody about the bison burgers - they only have a limited number (like 20 or something) every Friday and probably run out early. We went here last week while on a family camp out. Our family usually picks one night to eat a restaurant meal in town during our stay, and see if they can handle the overwhelming smell of campfire. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal! We had burgers, fries and shakes per other reviewers. We had the Bleu burger, which my husband said was good, the Gonburger which was pretty good, but I traded mine to my son for his Philly burger- which was fantastic. My younger son said they were the best burgers he has ever had. The fries were good and fresh and not too salty, which I liked a lot. The shakes were awesome. My husband had the maple bacon shake and it was pretty tasty. All in all. Great meal, a bit pricey, I think fries should come with the burger, but I realize it's a small town, family owned business and I definitely plan on a return trip, camping or not. read more

The chicken sandwich was over-cooked and dry this time and needed some more sauce for flavor. I asked for some but maybe the waitress didn't hear me. The fries looked and tasted burnt so we asked to have them remade and they did, which was nice, but they still didn't taste very good and still look overcooked. Maybe the oil is old? They didn't ask how our sandwiches were. Wait times are always REALLY long. They have some healthy salad options which is nice. Shakes super expensive. Nice temperature and music inside. We love out of the way places where we can find unusual businesses, kind of like the travels of Charles Kuralt years ago. We were on our way to Oakley, Utah and saw this place on the map. Stopped by and parked out front of the building. The right side of the store appears to be a summer only type walk up ice cream place which in November was closed. Noticed an unmarked police car sitting a few feet behind my car. Assumed he was fascinated by the out of state license. First thing I thought of was Mayberry and Barney. Went inside and sure enough an old drug store that apparently has long since been turned into another business. Stools and counter along the right where we could get ice cream, a banana split or milk shake. There was one guy ordering at the counter and just past that several tables and chairs where you could order a sandwich or something from the fountain. In the back of the store were more tables and chairs although at this time of the day they were empty. Lots of old "stuff" around the store plus a lot of greeting cards in the store. This is an interesting apace and we will be back to sit down and have one of the hamburgers. Glad to see these places are still being preserved. read more

I've always heard about this place but I usually go to Dick's Drive in (right around the corner) or The Notch for a beer. I felt like trying something new so my friends and I came here after hikig 8 miles in the Uintas with our dogs. Needless to say we were in deseperate need of a good burger. First impressions: 1) wow, this place is super crowded (it was a saturday at 6pm) 2) uhh, where will we sit? 3) I love the old pharmacy feel. So I ordered a cheeseburger and onion rings. I knew I would be stuffed so no milkshake for me, though they do have tons of flavor options. Meanwhile, I went to the restroom and whoa! it was realllly dirty. Like paper towels all over the floor, trash can overflowing, bad smells (yuck), and it just really needed a good cleaning. I was honestly scared to touch any handles because of how dirty it was. Anyway, there were 3 of us girls and only 2 of us got our burgers - they forgot my other friends meal! They said they forgot to put it in the computer, but they would start making her burger right away, which would take 10-15 minutes....finally they bring it and said they wouldn't be charging us for it, so that was good. Overall, I would give this place another try because the food was actually pretty good. I can excuse a dirty bathroom and forgotten order once, but if they do it again I wouldn't go back a 3rd time. Like . . . maybe they were just trying to get rid of the old fries for the day...or maybe the haven't changed the oil for 6 months. . . or maybe they just left the fries cooking for an extra 30 minutes - but, you get the drift. The burgers were the best part, and they were extremely mediocre - which wasn't expected for 2 cheeseburgers with fries and a shake . . . FOR $35 - are you serious. My strawberry shake was just syrup dumped into this runny, non-premium ice-cream. Like, a toddler could have mixed that shake up. Really really bad - maybe an off day or something - because there are some good reviews here - but it was just honestly terrible. Buyer beware! I would not advise going when its busy. Slow service would be an understatement. The shake was great and was glad they brought it out first because it was over an hour before we got out food. The shake kept my kids from going crazy. 35 minutes after our order and was told our food was coming up. I have trouble with superlatives. There, I said it. I'm just not as cool as John Cusack. I've always shied away from that High Fidelity-esque ranking game, and not just because I fumble to produce the witticisms my dogmatic male filmie friends inevitably assume must accompany this type of listing. Rather, I'm not convinced of the finality, the constraint, the arrogant objectiveness such proclamation asserts. It seems absurd to me to state, unequivocally, that one thing or person or place is the best, even just of its type. Best is just too subjective. Best is circumstantial at...well, best. So the news that Hi Mountain Drug's burgers have been deemed the best in the entire state of Utah should have rubbed me the wrong way. Pure principle would have insisted on going to Dick's instead, Kamas's lower-ranking burger joint a half block away, after a recent hike in the Uintahs. Instead, that best label dangled like a shiny piece of pop gear in the murky water that is the small town food scene. My hopes were Hi that we'd have some sort of other-worldly hamburger experience, smeared with the tangy sauce of dining enlightenment. Perhaps we'd all realize our lives were nowhere near complete, settling for the In'n'Outs and Five Guys of the Salt Lake Valley. Perhaps we'd finally get over the loss of Counter Burger. Perhaps we'd even cry and hug and start planning our summer vacations around regular seats on those Hi Mountain stools. If wishes were fishes, that pop gear would have been a seven inch German trout. But alas, I wasn't hooked: I fail to see what makes these burgers any better than their cosmopolitan cousins. Don't get me wrong--the place is definitely worth a stop. There's plenty of kitsch, a wholesome family of waitstaff smiling at you as they sling waxed paper-lined baskets around in a frenzy, and the broadest selection of Tootsie Roll flavors behind the register this reviewer has ever seen. My Gonburger was juicy, and the homemade fries were certainly unique (if not quite as much so as a trip to the restroom, via the steaming kitchen itself). The problem for me centered on sauce. Far, far too much of it. Barbeque and ketchupy mayo dripping from an already saturated bun, that masked the flavor of a quarter pound patty smothered in cheddar cheese. There were onion rings in there--the typical breaded and frozen variety--but they, too, were lost in the puddle. The bread was standard, and I gave up on most of it. Overall, a good idea, and the preparation certainly seemed old school. I'm guessing this is likely the sandwich SmashBurger based their more corporate Beehive Burger on, for good reason. But as ashamed as I am to admit it, I think Smash has done a better job with the balance of it: lighter dressings, more flavorful meat, and a stack of crispier battered onions on a brioche roll. (Though they could learn a thing or two from a family-owned joint in Kamas about ambience, service, and countertop reading materials, I'll admit). I enjoyed my time at Hi Mountain, loved a bite of a malted hot fudge shake, and wished I'd had room to order the house ironport soda. But overall, I can't say it had the best burgers in the state. Still, considering the fact that I'd already eaten on that hike, I will assert with confidence that my Hi Mountain Drug Gonburger was number one on my top ten list of lunches I had last Saturday. My wife and I stopped here on the way home after hiking in the Uintas. Not great service: This place was not busy when we visited. We were the only ones there ordering ice cream. There were plenty of girls standing around talking with each other rather than working. After waiting for 20 minutes we asked one of the girls behind the counter if someone could just get us two ice cream cones. The girl said she could but without apologizing for us having to wait. They were all very aware that we were standing there. No one ever told us that they would be right with us. After my wife got her cone the girl helping us asked me to wait and left to go to the back. She came back a few minutes later and began talking to the other girls. Then a woman who I believe was the manager came up and got on them for spilling water. 5 minutes after my wife was handed her cone I was given mine. Finally 25 minutes later we were out the door with our two ice cream cones. There were about 10 girls working behind the counter and they all looked to be about 15 years old. read more

I am giving one star because it always takes more than an hour to get your burger, followed by a twenty minute wait to pay the cashier- if you can find one. I have been to Hi Mountain at least a dozen times now- always hoping for a better experience. There is a major delay in the kitchen, every time, empty or crowded- and it's never that crowded. The burgers are okay, not great and certainly not worth the wait. The shakes are very good, but again, a very long, long wait once you have put your order in. There are lots of young kids who work there, but they don't seem to be doing much. You may go once, but I'm sure you won't go back. Fries are not very good either. read more

Don't go to the pharmacy inside the Kamas Food Town looking for burgers. Hi Mountain Drug is a few blocks down to the left, pass the gas station. If you get lost, the locals are more than happy to point you in the right direction. I had the Aussie Burger, with a fried egg on top. It's great! Pair it with a tall refreshing limeade, ask for more tart and less sweet. It was heavenly. Parking is tough and the booths are tiny to squeeze a baby and a car seat, but it's a great way to spend a leisurely lunch. read more

When we were walking out the door the older woman who had ignored us the ENTIRE time we were there said "oh you're leaving.." I said "we've been sitting for 40 minutes. We've been sitting in hi mountain for more than 30 mins. It took more than 20 for us to even be able to ORDER the 4 shakes and 4 waters. so far we've not seen any of them. It's ridiculous. I've never seen a place less organized. They don't seem to even have a basic understanding how to run a restaurant. (Take the order, but in the order. Take the next order. Put in that order.) we would leave but my poor 3 year old is nearly In Tears wanting his cherry shake. He's been so patient I don't have the heart to drag him out of here. If I were just rating the burgers this place would get a 5-star review. It is a family run business, read lazy kids here, there were no less than 5 young folks working (lol) behind the counter and it took forever to take our order. The fry's are greasy and undercooked, however the fried pickles were good. We ordered a vanilla shake and a strawberry cheesecake malt, which they forgot to make until we were almost done with our meal, my wife finally reminded them and then they argued about who should make it. They charged $2.00 extra for my premium malt which was as it turned out was strawberry ice cream that they broke vanilla wafers into for the cheesecake. We will no doubt go back for the burgers but nothing else. Just remember the service is ultra slow. read more

The burger, fries and fried pickles were good....but...we were disappointed about 2 pretty important details. First, the ventilation system needs to be fixed. We had to shower when we got home to get the greasy smell out of our hair, and our clothes are still airing out outside! And second, we were disappointed that they use so much throw away plastic rather than washable dishes. Even the ketchup is in a little individual plastic container...why not a refillable ketchup bottle on the table? We probably will not return. read more

Hi-Mountain is definitely a locals' spot. The food is always great, and the menu is really quite diverse. The restaurant used to be the front of a drug store decades ago, so don't expect anything too fancy when headed in. However, the food is so good it's easy to see how they've lasted so long. Service can be slow with limited seating on busy days, so that's one thing to expect if you're headed there on a summer weekend. read more

Several Saturday's ago my friend Ann and I decided to take a scenic drive up Kamas way. We stopped at Hi-Mountain and ordered the Hollywood Hamburger. I have to say it was the best hamburger I have had in years. It had a nice crisp crust on the outside of the burger, was seasoned well and was tender inside. Service was a little slow and they only have a single bathroom for both men and women but if you can overlook those two issues, you'll be in for a great treat. read more

We stopped in on a Tuesday for lunch. It was fabulous! We ordered an Oreo shake and chocolate cream pie shake ( layers of chocolate syrup, graham cracker crust, and ice cream). The shakes were loved by all and it was a freezing day. We ordered toasted cheese, blueburger, fish and chips, and lots of fries. Our ages ranged from 7-85 years old.
