Manager didnt care that her own prices are not what is actually charged. Food is good but be prepared actual cost is more than u see when u order. This is one of those places you struggle to decide whether it should be a 3 or 4 star. 3.5 would be accurate. The food is pretty good. I like that they have tots. It has a local divey burger joint vibe that can't be matched by the national chains. That being said, it's expensive, relatively. You can quickly drop $10 and that's before you order a whole lot. The basics will set you back a 10 spot. Now, ten bucks isn't a ton of money, but for what you get, I'd say it's pushing the limit of what people would tolerate. This was the worst HiBoy I have ever been to! Went to get my dinner tonight, I ordered 1/4 cheeseburger and an order of onion rings. $10.50 total. The meat was very over done, the $4.29 onion rings were the worse I have had any where. They were the consistancy of rubber. The onion ring went in the trash, and the dog ate the burger. This place is not a good choice for burgers. The are cheap McDonald's style burger, but even more tasless. It is super expensive ( $5 to $8) for what you get: super frozen tasless patty, in a bum, and a sauce that is nothing special. Went through the drive-thru and service was friendly and fast. I had the turkey burger and my husband had the 1/4 lb. cheese burger. We also ordered fries, tater tots, and onion rings. Everything was hot and crispy. Highly recommend, especially if you are looking to support a local business. read more

I expected this place to be a lot cheaper. It's great that they're a local business and all, but come on, it's a drive up burger joint, not a sit down restaurant. At least they take plastic. Who carries cash now besides waiters and bartenders anyway? I stopped here after speech class at Blue River a few times. The first time may have to go in my top ten burgers of all time. I had the half pound cheeseburger with fries. They season their beef with extra pepper. This adds a great deal of flavor without having to rely on a lot of salt, which you get plenty of with their fries. Fries were good too, crispy fresh, fried, and salty. God bless you America. The second trip did not leave me wanting more. I opted for the quarter pound burger, big mistake. I can't actually eat a half pound burger, I just like the meat to bun ratio that you get with that much beef. They use these buns here that get kind of mushy. They stick to the patty, and become one with it. I ordered at the drive thru both times and didn't have to wait forever to begin eating, but the bun still became a wet hot mess at some point between being graced with a patty, and going into my mouth. Boo. I realize a toasted bun is not a realistic option for speedy drive thru service, but I don't want my burger bun to feel like they dipped it in water before putting my meal together. The fries the second time around had been around for a while. They were floppy, like old celery. I'm not saying the second trip was totally gross, I ate my burger, just not the fries, but after such a great experience the first time around, I expected better. Being a Gladstoner, I still prefer Hayes. They aren't cheap either but at least they're consistent. But if I'm ever in this area again, I'll probably give them another shot. read more

My husband grew up in Independence and we have been going to this (and other) HiBoy locations for over 20 years. We live in Overland Park, so we don't get there often. The burgers, tots, onion rings and Limeades are what we love - and an occasional shake. I think the food is great - this ain't health food, folks - but I agree with some of the other reviewers that it is expensive for what you get. The tots are crispy, not soft and the batter on the onion rings does not fall off when you eat them - because they are crispy also, I guess. The burgers are nice and greasy - not gourmet, just good. So, I give 4 stars for the food and take one off for expensive for what you get. read more

The best burgers around. One thing to take note of. Get the double. If you're not hungry enough then get the junior double. The meat to bread ratio is perfect. Otherwise you are left with too much soggy bread to meat. I always get the double, either the half pound or the junior depending on how hungry. Sometimes I hold the onions as they pile them on, or take off a few. But the meat is what does it. Seasoned perfectly. I hate a burger that hasn't been seasoned. I'm not one to complain, #eatweekly, I go here ALL THE TIME and no complaints, love this place hands down! Bottom line is the manager!! This evening I went to HiBoy, I ordered 2 burgers and 2 sides with a coupon to get a sandwich free. The person at the speaker did not repeat my order, nor did they give me a total at the speaker. I pulled around to the window, I handed cashier my debit card without a second thought because I come here often. (Weekly) At the window, she still did not tell me a total and did not ask for the coupon. They rarely do. Again, without second thoughts, I went home with my food. Once home, I discovered an extra bag of onion rings that I did not order so I checked the receipt. On the receipt I was charged for extra onion rings and was not discounted for the coupon. I called HiBoy store, the manager answers (unwilling to give name), I explain to him the situation. Manager responded without hesitations that we could come to store in the morning and speak with his manager then hangs up the phone. I call back a second time in hopes to solve the matter this evening. I got the same response. The manager was noncompliant and disrespectful. As a regular weekly customer, I am disappointed in my local HiBoy and only wish to resolve the matter with respect. read more

Not impressed at all. The service was very shoddy as my standard "hello" wasn't returned with any pleasantry or acknowledgement that I was a human being. As they handed me my food they yawned right in my face to the point I smelled their bad breath. Then they proceeded to stare into the void as I gave a departing pleasantry. I ordered the Jr. Hi-Boy without tomatoes or lettuce, as I do not trust them from drive-thrus, and it ended up with lettuce on it. Cheap shredded mix that just made the bun soggy since there isn't enough fat in their sauce to save the bun. The burger was not seasoned, and I don't mean "seasoned" there was no salt or pepper added to the beef to pull out its flavor. The pickles were good and about the only saving point of the burger. My fries were a grab bag of quality. Some limp and near soggy some decently crisp but some consistency would be nice. Maybe I just went on an off night (Friday night on the wind-down of dinner rush) but this isn't what I expected from a burger joint trying to set itself apart from the big burger chains. read more

The staff always seems a bit abrupt. The burgers are amazing. Almost everytime I order onion rings, tater tots or any other deep fried side, it's not hot. Twice I've mentioned it while ordering and got a defensive, snappy response that each side is cooked to order. Um, obviously not because my sides aren't hot. My fries smelled like sweat socks I couldn't even eat them. The burger was ok for a smash burger but had way too much pepper on it. I went to the Blue Ridge location to buy a cup of ice for my elderly mother who had been in thr hospital. I was denied the right to purchase a full sized drink for the ice. My daughter loves HiBoy because of the Red Cream Soda. I'm a fan because the burgers don't taste like they came off of an assembly line. Each thin patty has "burnt" edges and taste like someone just pulled it off the grill. I stay away from the onion rings only because I can't stop eating them- they are that good. I wish the service was consistent. We always go to the Drive-Thru, and it's a little hit-or-miss. So far, a rude server hasn't spoiled our meal, but consistent, polite service makes a big difference anywhere. read more

Had lunch at Hi Boy Drive In today - first (and last) timer here. I was surprised by how expensive this fast food restaurant was but figured the reviews were so good it was worth a shot. Two people having two Jr. Dbl Cheeseburgers, one fry, one onion ring and a shake was over $17. The rings were good - not as good as other places, shake was out of a machine like McD's, and fries were not anything special. The worst part was the burger, it was very tough. The restaurant was very clean and it definitely had a family owned feel going to it. They support local youth sports and had pictures/trophies all around. Fast service as well - although they weren't busy at 11:30 when we walked in on that Sunday. I'd take Five Guys Burgers and Fries over Hi Boy, they're cheaper and taste much better. If you want local KC fast food and are willing to travel, try LC's up north. read more

I been going to Hi Boys Since the 80s. The 1 on 24 hwy. But then now I been going to the other 1 off 291. So I decided to go inside with a friend. Now there was some rudeness I had never ever experinced from there before. But really what upset me was I'm eating and employee is spray bathroom spray (Scrubbing bubble) all over napkin and straw container as I'm eating. Which it not even a foot from me. And as shes spraying I can see it going all over plastic silverware. Then I get a free refill that same lady is now up there spraying all over registers and me and my 9 month old friends drinks on counter. Now I know there hi priced but I paid to eat there without the taste of cleaning supplies. And I was coughing they kept spraying. Will not eat there again. read more

Love there food. I usually do not go inside but today I decided to. As I walk in there are four girls standing there with Frowns on their face just staring at me like I'm totally bothering them. I asked the one young lady at the register about a coupon online if she needed a code . Food is 4 stars; service is 0 stars. Food is good; however the service today was exceptionally horrible! We got screamed at twice because we didn't get to the counter fast enough. My husband told the cashier we had a coupon but she darted away from the register while he was talking & actually collided with a co-worker! My husband continued to hold the coupon over the register waiting for her to come back. She was talking very loudly & fast, and was rushing around, but it didn't equate into speed nor productivity. Then she scolded my husband when he showed her & told her AGAIN that he had a coupon. She said people usually tell her first, but she was busy talking & walking away. She fussed at us again yelling that she hadn't rung us up yet. Yes, we already knew that, I was just getting my wallet out. She was so rude that I walked away & left my husband to pay. She keyed in the amount he was paying incorrectly. She said he gave her too much money & handed him back a dime. No, he was originally supposed to get $4..00 (4 ones) back but after making him take a dime back, his change was now $3.90 (who wants all that change?). She was incredibly unpleasant and brash so we won't be back. What a shame because we'll miss the onion rings, jr double cheeseburgers and the Italian steak sandwiches. read more
