I ordered Protein shrimp bowl 17.95$ which turned out to be without shrimp with very few vegetables and nasty sticky cold rice more looking like a mush. This is my first time visiting this place. This is the second sports bar that I had visited over the years after visiting one in Ohio. We went as a group from the company, our group count goes to 10 people. They had long surf board table that can fit more than 10+ people and u have got screens all around running games, news and some funny videos channel. They have also got a big projector to be used during the game season With regards to the service our waiters were helpful and prompt. But with regards to the service time of getting the food order from u and actually delivering the food, I can say their time is close to 6 on the scale of 10. I guess it depends on the people in the group and their order. But overall the bar was not much crowded, I can say it was an average crowding. I guess if u go as a small group their service would be faster i guess. Now the food. I ordered the Oregon cedar salmon. I have never tasted it anywhere so I wasn't in any expectation. The presentation was top notch and the taste of the salmon was really good. Overall the whole plate was really fulfilling. Decided to give Hickory Tavern another shot as we wanted to check out "Karaoke Night" this past Saturday, but unfortunately we were left singing the blues as the night was nothing short of a huge disappointment. First off, I want to preface this by saying I get it, staffing is a challenge these days, so patience is the name of the game when it comes to dining out, but there is a difference between a place dealing with staffing shortages and a place having a bunch of employees seemingly wandering around aimless while one super awesome manager is running around putting up decorations, sweeping floors, cleaning AND taking orders for servers who aren't doing their jobs. We waited almost 10 minutes after being seated before anyone even acknowledged us. By the way, we know it was 9+ minutes b/c we actually set a timer once we had been sitting there for 5 minutes with not a soul even acknowledging our presence, as when we asked a server if she was ours, she dismissed us with a "no, I am not your server, but I will see who is", without bothering to ask if we wanted waters or anything (which would be the definition of a "team" member by the way). Of course, she disappeared and walked by our table numerous times after that and never said a word (I assume because we weren't her problem). I do want to give kudos to the "super manager" however as we eventually made eye contact while she was sweeping up, and she offered to get our waters and drink orders since no one else was waiting on our table. She did signal to a server to take care of us, but I guess he was too busy holding up the wall, as he still didn't come by to check on us until she had made a couple of stops by our table. He was the epitome of minimum effort throughout the night, as he came off as being bothered that we were there, which is a huge turnoff when dining out, because I guess some places don't understand the concept that without customers... Not sure what was up as the place was pretty much empty, no one ever sang karaoke, the servers were just hanging out by the bar talking while the manager was doing everything. Multiple times we noticed the manager nudge the server over to our table to check on our needs, but it just seemed like he wanted to be anywhere but there, which honestly was how we felt after such inept service, so we passed on ordering more drinks (we had planned to stay the entire night, but left after an hour instead). Definitely a lesson learned, as staffing challenges may be out of their control, but training everyone to put in maximum effort, serve with a smile, and treat the customer like you value their business is definitely in their control, just like choosing the spend our weekends at any of the other numerous options out there in Ballantyne moving forward. The only reason this isn't a zero star review (besides the fact that Yelp doesn't allow those) is because the super manager earned five stars for her effort, but unfortunately the rest of her staff was a solid -3 stars. I spoke to Kelli who is one of the managers. This chick is LEGIT! She was on top of everything and even called me back to ensure that they had all of the information correct. They set up the restaurant perfectly for our group. We were sat immediately. The servers were attentive and got started on our orders right away! Our drinks, appetizers, and meals were out in a flash! I ordered the create your own salad which I SCARFED down due to it being so AWESOME! The management (Amanda & Mitchell) at this location is SUPER accommodating! We signed up for their Super Bowl event (all you can eat buffet) and before Super Bowl Sunday our crowd kept getting larger. Mitchell never said 'no we can't do that'! His attitude was YES, we can do that and what else can we do for you! Ordered a summer shandy, and like 9 out of 10 times I order draft beer, it had just kicked. Seriously, if you own a bar and need to get rid of a keg contact me. It's like magic. Poof. All gone. Then something odd happened. The server asked if we minded if he sit down at our table while he took out order because he had a late night. Then just pulled out a chair and sat. This would have been off any time, but now during COVID really inappropriate. We were confused and hungry so we rolled with it. Plus, awkward. It's been a while since I ate at a Hickory Tavern - the experience was great! We ordered some nachos to split, and the portion was perfect for a group of 5. They have an impressive selection of beers on tap which is always great with a group - everyone can find something they'll enjoy. For dinner, I ordered the Grouper Tacos with Charred Mexican Corn. The corn was a recommendation from a staff member, and I was really grateful for her guidance on that one! The corn was awesome, I could have had an entire bowl. The tacos were tasty, two were the perfect size for a dinner plate. The fish was fresh and the breading was crispy without being greasy. We expected the place to be packed but it wasn't and we were seated immediately! This location seems way more spacious than the Winston one! Food was excellent! We hadn't eaten all day and went with the small nachos to start. Huge portion for $6! Highly recommended! My husband and I both got the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and it was terrific. He then got an order of wings "to go" to have at the hotel later that night... Which he said were very good as well! Service was friendly and fast! What a great experience I had tonight enjoying dinner with my mom and dad. Walking in I was greeted by the host and explained I was looking for the Parentals. Having been a regular at The Hickory Tavern Ballantyne for over 6 years, I not only frequent it's location because of the Consistency of The Food, but the Real Feature to me is the Friendliness of the staff. For example, last evening seeing that I had a question, one of the servers whose name is Chasity, (seeing that the server assigned to our table became very, very busy), took the time to update our table, on some menu questions that we had. At most restaurants around Charlotte, a server not assigned to your table would typically leave ya hanging. I sure do appreciate servers like Chasity. As much as it pains me, I'm Changing my stars from 4 stars to 3, which is still very generous. My re-review is based off of the last four visits there in the last month. Service has seriously fallen off of the wagon at this location. It seems there was a management change as the female manager who was always there is no longer there. Moreover, most of the staff is new. Food is slow coming out and their food isn't prepared with care as it once was. My most recent visit was Friday 10/4. For starters, our waitress was upset that we asked to sit a high top right next to the regular table the hostess took us to. (I needed a better view of the tv that was playing the game I wanted to watch). We ordered Old Fashioned drinks, our waitress proceeded to ask us if we wanted a 16 oz or a 20 oz. We smiled thinking she was joking and she repeated her question, louder this time. We told her neither and that it was a drink not a beer. She repeated the 16 or 20 oz question again, to which we asked her to please tell the bartender that was our order. Sure enough, she walked away and a new waitress was mysteriously assigned to our table. Our waitress was kind (and she knew what an old fashion was) As an another example, Our BBQ chicken nachos on Friday had unmelted shredded cheese basically dumped onto our chips (normally the cheese is Melted onto the chips. Trust me, I've ordered these no less than 25 times) and nooo I didn't send my food back, I made a mental note and paid my bill when we were done eating. We noticed that everyone around us had to go find their waitress at one time or another whether it be for a refill of their drinks or to get their bill. We frequent this restaurant. Drive there, even bike there. So decided to go tonight last minute after son's baseball game ran late. Server seemed harried and annoyed even though restaurant was, at best, 1/3 occupied. Took (conservatively) 15 minutes to get a beer served that they had on tap. The Hickory Tavern is a solid local chain to go to for some good pub food. I go here a lot and have eaten pretty much everything on the menu. I will highlight a few of the ones that are my favorites and some I don't recommend! Chicken Quesadilla 5/5- Comes with a jalapenos, sour cream, etc. to add into the quesadilla if you want! Charred Plain Jane wings 5/5- AMAZING. They are such a hit with anyone I've ever gone here with Lobster Roll- 5/5 My Go-to item... I swear its the best one in town. You wouldn't expect it either.
