I was in this past week Columbia for a conference, and the Hickory Tavern is across the street from my hotel. First, the servers were awful. I visited twin the same day, and the service was equally bad. I am a former food server, and food servers were either poorly trained or not trained at all. You waited forever for everything. Second, the food was mediocre at best. I had Charred Lemon Pepper chicken wings that were poorly seasoned. The one thing I had that I enjoyed and would order again is the build your own salad. That I will give two thumbs up. Finally, THEY WERE OUT OF EVERYTHING! One of my friends LITERALLY ordered four different beers and a Philly Cheesesteak only for the server to come back to the table (after a very long wait) and say they were out that food or beverage, which goes back to the training of the staff. Why does the server not know what is available on the menu, and why are you showing the guests a drink and food menu that multiple items are unavailable for purchase. I don't recommend The Hickory at this time. I hope they read this review and commit to being a better establishment. read more

We arrived during a bit of a family misunderstanding, and the staff didn't miss a beat--they quietly noticed and went above and beyond to make sure my husband and I felt comfortable. 7 of us went on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. The place was pretty dead, only about 6 other tables In the entire place and several waitresses were working. 4 of us received our food, then 10 minutes later 2 more of us received our orders then another 10 minutes after that my husband receives his lunch. The waitress never said what was going on or why we weren't receiving our food, she also did not bring us basic items like silverware and ketchup for the fries/burgers so I had to go inside and get them myself, she never came to see if we needed drink refills and never even asked how the food was. It baffles my mind because she wasn't even busy. The other tables were being attended by other waitresses. The place itself was nice and the food was ok. However, due to the lack of service none of us would go back there again. Loved the music lyrics on the walls, bathroom was exceptionally clean, always a plus. Two of us ordered BBQ chicken nachos, I would suggest the small version. Not a fan how they came out, it was pretty much a big giant mound of chips, I prefer them a little more spread out so you can actually get to the toppings. My boyfriend and I had a coupon to come here so we decided to go tonight. We went roughly around 8:30ish and the place was relatively slow. We decided to sit upstairs out on the patio because the weather was nice enough to sit outside at night. Our food arrived as well as our drinks in Barry any time at all nice and hot. My chips were a little soggy and salty but they were okay. My burger was also okay but nothing special. My boyfriend absolutely loved his burgers and fries, even tho the honey butter became a tad bit much later on. Our waiter was friendly and inviting as well as knowledge about the menu and drinks. Prices: $5-$20 depending on what you get Place: clean and nice Staff: hilarious and welcoming I would definitely return to try more of the menu and drink selection. While I loathe sports bars in general, this place was great. While many places, including the IHOP up the street, seem to be WAY understaffed and slow right now we wandered in here for supper hoping to eventually get some food. They greatly exceeded our expectations. First we had excellent service from Lauren, who took the time to seat and serve us with a positive attitude and efficient enthusiasm. I had the Charleston Burger with a side of Brussel sprouts. BOTH were amazing. Great actually. My friend had the same. We sat outside as the weather was perfect and it seemed a little chilly inside. Our experience was so good that we both returned on our second night in Columbia and both of us ordered the exact same thing. The inside temp seemed better so we chose a table near the bar. This time we had Kaylah serving us and we were here first customers as a server since coming over from hostessing. She too did a splendid job. We would have never known she was new had she not told us. The managers must take good care of their people! Like any sports bar there are TV screens everywhere and they are hard to ignore. Service was very good BUT, I ordered a burger, medium rare and Cole slaw as my side. Waited a while for food but not crazy long. My burger was a hockey puck well done. Super dry. So I took a nice big but of slaw... OMG... It was warm, sour, and nasty. I had to spit it out and was using my napkin to clean my tongue else I would have thrown up. I asked for the manager but they NEVER CAME. My waitress came and I told her the problem.. She quickly took the good away and brought fries to "help take the nastiness out of my mouth". I waited another 10 minutes while the rest of my party are their dinner. Once the burger came, it was perfect and delicious. Decided to try Hickory Tavern tonight. Reviews are overall positive so why not? Chose to order delivery but the food was still delicious arriving faster than anticipated. Ordered a cheese steak and added mushrooms which sadly were omitted. However the helping of meat was plenty and there was a decent amount of peppers and onions. There could have been more onions and peppers in my opinion but the amount was adequate. The hoagie roll was soft not hard and was filled with meat that was tender and flavorful. The fries were good as well with a nice helping. The staff added to go silverware and ketchup which was a pleasant surprise and quite a few packs of ketchup so it was about right. Overall I think it was very good. I am rating four stars since they left off the mushrooms added, paid for and not received. This would not deter me from another visit. Things happen and with it being football season and a Saturday night I can understand not that that should be an excuse or reason for it to happen, but hey things happen. The food was delicious and a new customer has been gained by the restaurant! EDIT to review - Ordered the cheesesteak again and it was even more delicious and had all the toppings as ordered, so I am changing to 5 STARS! I am impressed with the food. I waited until after the lunch rush thinking the service might be better. Nope. Other servers had to find my waitress 3 separate times. I had to find her myself to get the check. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich with ice tea. The waitress said it comes with a side so I ordered sweet potato fries. Then I was charged for them. The fries were stale and bland, the ice tea was weak. The sandwich itself was good, in fact, very good and that's why I gave two stars instead of one.
