I started coming here because my hair stylist moved here from another salon. This is my third time here. It's awesome! The place looks over Pioneer Square and is lined with windows. The atmosphere is never stuck-up (as many high-end studios are.) the owners treated me like family the very first time I came, even though I was meeting them for the first time. I went to Justin for about 6 years before moving to Spokane and he is AMAZING! But the best thing about Hickox is their hair product line. Once I moved to Spokane I realized how dependant I am on them! They shipped to me every month and now they opened and online store, so it is a lot easier for me (and probably them) Okay, here are the products I love: Phat Hair- the best styling mousse you will EVER use! Tons of control with no build up or gunk. Seriously folks, they are famous for this stuff in Portland. Saturate Shampoo- this stuff rocks! Quick Fix- Okay, I still use hair spray....so sue me! I have been going to Hickox Studio for over 6 years now, and I would never go anywhere else! Justin has been cutting my hair for that long, and my hair has never looked better. I came to them as a recommendation from a friend, and I had just experienced a very horrible haircut from a stylist that I had been going to for over 2 years! Justin corrected her horrible mistake and I have been hooked since. Over the years, they have had colorists that have given me such great highlights, that I have been stopped on the street numerous times asking who does my hair. I had my hair cut by Justin one month ago and it's everything I had hoped it would be! My stylist of 12 years just retired due to COVID and I was doubtful that I would find a suitable replacement. I don't normally write reviews, in fact this is the first one I've written, but I feel that I'm obligated to share about my experience with Hickox salon. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT go here unless you are looking for amateur work and unprofessional service. I came to Justin hickox after being referred by hairdreams when I moved to Portland from another state. I've been wearing hairdreams extensions for 2 years and have loved every minute of them and never had any problems wearing them, that is until Justin installed my last set this summer. I was not sure why he was placing them so low at the nape of my neck and also thought it strange as to the sporadic placement. As I'd said before I'd been wearing hairdreams extensions for over 2 years. I was used to them being placed up much higher on my head and also them being installed in neat meticulously placed rows, one in front of the other. I never had trouble hiding them or styling my hair, they always flowed naturally, and they'd last between 5 1/2 to 6 months if I really took care of them. Which I did. I always used hairdreams products and never had issues with them slipping out. I'd usually lose a few around the fifth month simply due to my own hair which they were attached to shedding, which is entirely normal. Well after spending $1330 at hickox studio and placing my trust in Justin hickox, I left with what felt like half the hair I was used to for the same price, but also highlights that had bled through the foils leaving streaks at my scalp. I tried to overlook this and hoped I was just overreacting. Then I started noticing my extensions slip out. I lost more than 10 in the first week. After that they continually came out at a rate of roughly 2-3 per week. I made several calls to the salon and left multiple messages. Justin finally got back to me and said I should come in and he'd replace the ones that had slipped out and place in some more to try and help hide the ones that were too low. I went in hoping for the best. He ended up taking out numerous pieces that were too low to work with and only replaced about 15. The ones he put in on the sides were angled towards my face instead of slightly angled towards the back, which is how hair hair naturally flows. Needless to say they were even worse and harder to hide. Justin finished up without even trimming the extensions to try and blend with the rest of my hair and said I should be good to go and I thanked him and went on my way. I left and walked across the street and 2 more came out in the mall across from his shop. So embarrassing!! I had enough at this point and decided to have a consultation with another extension expert I found online. She agreed that my extensions were done very poorly and that I should ask for a refund. She also commented that it looked like they'd been in for 5-6 months (actually only had been 8 weeks) and needed to come out soon. Another thing she noted was my poor dye-job. She ended up trimming them to try and make them blend in and she did not charge me. I called Justin to request a refund. My calls and messages went unanswered or returned for over a week. Finally he got back to me and I requested compensation. He offered to refer me to another stylist and I said no thank you, I'd really like a refund. He agreed to send more extensions to be placed by someone else but refused to do a refund. I thought it strange that he'd rather order $700 in hair and ship it, rather than to refund me part of my money. I tried to contact him to discuss this. I emailed him a bunch more times and called the salon and left messages for another week and a few days without any response. Finally got a response from him that he was sorry but that he could no longer offer me any kind of compensation, no refund, and no extensions and basically said have a good day. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT go here unless you are looking for terrible unprofessional service and amateur work. read more

Okay, I just got the cutest haircut, check the picture out! How cute is that! I love love love love Hickox. Yes, I pay a fortune. Every now and then I wonder why I pay over $75 for a haircut, and I venture out to another salon. Then I go home in tears remembering that apparently cutting thick curly hair a science and few stylists know the science. You don't get the hand massage that Aveda gives, but your hair looks fabulous. I went in today with hair that was way too long, and making me feel like a hippie. Not acceptable. I told Sharon, to do her magic and I was her canvas. She could do make-over haircuts for magazines. It is a family business and they have been around for years. My mom goes to them too. They also have the best products. I don't know what Phat Hair is but I won't use anything else. Nikki (colorist) is no longer there, but their new guy puts Nikki's magic to shame. He is a genius. I saw two other women today that he colored and they looked natural blond. This is one of the few places where you can get anyone of the stylists and you are in good hands. They should get 4 stars instead of 5 for price, but I just can't say that this place is less than perfection for the way they make me look! read more

The salon currently has one colorist and three stylists. The prices are a bit high (but everyone always pays to much for a haircut nowadays). Hickox is owned by an older couple and their son--all three still work as stylists and no matter who you see, you won't go wrong. The space is cozy but is probably due for a little renovation to make it a little more hip and attractive, but since the my hair always looks so fabulous afterward, I hardly care. read more

Justin is excellent at cutting and styling any hair type, and he takes the time to educate clients on how to style your hair. My sister suggested that I try Hickox Studio as a change from my hairstylist of 10 years. I'm pretty flexible when it comes to my hair... long, short, ultrashort, highlights, low-lights... I've done it all. I'm not that critical, so the fact that I'm giving Hickox Salon 2 stars says a lot. My first haircut with Justin went well. He gave me a really cute bob that was funky/trendy and was a great departure from my long hairstyle that I walked in with. He showed me how to style it and discussed the techniques of flat-ironing in great detail. It was a good appointment and Justin was great. I walked out with a nice haircut and some Hickox hair products. However, the second time I came in, I felt like it was a completely different business! Justin was running 15 mins late, his mom washed my hair and left me sitting in a chair with cold dripping hair for almost 10 mins, which was awkward. When Justin finally got to me, he didn't talk much. He seemed grumpy and rushed and wanted to get through my haircut as fast as he could. Barely spent anytime cutting my hair. He used WAY TOO MUCH of his product (Phat Hair mousse) in my hair and then proceeded to flat-iron so much that I smelled my hair burning. The haircut he gave me was bad... it's uneven (left side is longer than the right and thicker too) and has grown out horribly. At the end of the haircut, I was late getting back to work and didn't have time to ask him to correct it. He was really grumpy anyway, so I felt intimidated to ask him to correct it! This should have been a really simple cut... it was just a trim of a bob! I'm not going back to Hickox Salon. I was getting better haircuts and service from my previous stylist for about 15 dollars cheaper! And I was treated with a little more respect as a client. read more

I started going to Justin at Hickox Studio in 2003. My hair always looks beautiful and I have tons of compliments... I would ignore the few disgruntled customers that have posted negative comments on yelp. You can't please them all, especially if they think they know more than the person with the training and expertise. I have recommended friends and coworker to Justin for close to 14 years... He's impeccably, knowledgeable and awesome at what he does... I highly recommend Justin or Sharon & John Hickox to "DO IT RIGHT" for you... I have been a client of theirs (Sharon's) since 1995, back when they were on Broadway. Granted, I would only go in once every two-three months, then once a quarter when my hair grew longer. Maybe it's the fact that I am not a mover-and-shaker in the Portland world, but after years of mostly good haircuts, I grew tired of the indifference that I've been shown over the years, as their attitude communicates that they could really care less if I ever returned. Last January I was charged double for highlights since my last touch-up six months prior. They said that my hair had grown longer. Twice as long?? I don't think so. So, between being charged $225 for a cut & highlights and the complete and utter indiifference they have repeatedly shown me - a longtime client - over the years, I'm done. It's a long drive for me - too long for the attitude. It wouldn't hurt to make your clients feel valued and wanted. I'm going to look a little closer to home - maybe there's a stylist who actually values and appreciates loyalty from their clients. read more
