I am defiantly coming here again. I was visiting Dallas for a coffee conference last weekend and I have to say. This is a really awesome place. The people that come here are an awesome group of guys. I made friends pretty quickly and the bartenders not only remember you, but they remember what you were drinking yesterday. To me, that is quite impressive! One thing I wish I had known ahead of time is that that this bar does NOT accept credit cards - It's CASH ONLY. Just remember when you come here, make sure you have cash on you. The bartenders do have a strong hand when it comes to pouring drinks for you, strong drinks - So, that is more for your buck! It was Halloween, so - the place was defiantly decorated in Halloween décor. I would defiantly come back here again. read more

My first visit, nervous, wondering if I'd fit in. Weeknight, nice crowd in bar and on patio, full range of ages and clothes, no need to dress up. I was welcomed by two people while I was waiting for my first drink, bartender introduced himself and thanked me for coming. Prices about half what's charged on the Strip, drinks were strong. Misters??? on the huge patio to keep the temp down. Quiet enough for conversation. Met one of the softball teams the bar sponsors, super-nice guys. No attitude from anybody. Poster says HD donates all its profits to charities in the Lawn. I don't get out to bars that often, but I'll definitely head back there when I do. W T F happened? Seriously, W T F? If you find yourself saying this on a Monday morning, then you may have been at the Hidden door on Sunday. Holy shit, what a den of iniquity! My hair guy invited me to come hang out at the Hidden Door, so me, the BF, Lisa P and others decided to give it a try after a few drinks at the Grapevine. From the outside it looks like a windowless dive and when you get inside that is definitely what it is. Dark. Packed full of a LOT of drunk dudes. Why are they drunk? Sunday is BEER BUST! Draft beer is 50 cents I think and everyone is drinking it. You can also order your favorite liquor treat as well and they make them almost as strong as the Loon. Go out to the patio and enjoy checking out all the dudes hanging out. The patio is packed as well and a lot of dudes have their shirt off advertising their wares. The crowd is friendly and also a little sassy - and many of them are not scared to try and sneak a peek of your BFs goods hehehe After a few hours of the cheap beer or your liquor treats you will not remember leaving or how you got home and you will wake up today like I did...thinking "W T F happened yesterday??" Last stop on a three-part Sunday Funday... and extra super-duper fun! First, I love walking into a room full of extra-festive, super-friendly boys having a great Sunday afternoon. Even you, no-shirt cowboy hat guy with sweet little scrawny legs in your 13MWZs! You are precious. Divey goodness, truly. Dark and no-frills, featuring a coupla pool tables and some ratty seating (plus some perching room on the half-wall between the bar area and the pool tables). But the bar area - YES. That's where the magic happens. Apparently Sunday = $0.50 draft beer day, so you'll see LOTS of plastic cups with golden foamy contents. Just like high school! But try the other stuff, because I can tell you that the spicy bloody marys are KILLER, made with love & care. You've never been so happy to get your ass kicked by a drink, trust me. Now, after one of those I grabbed another (and who the hell handed me a jello shot - was that official or smuggled in? Thanks for not being a rufie, delicious little jiggly buddy) and headed out to the giant patio area. So after the sudden-brightness-blindness subsides, all you see is wall-to-wall dudes - and every last one is having a little party. Seriously, it's a festival of festive festivities out there! We had a blast until the sober one led us out of there. Yay other people driving! A designated driver is a definite plus when the beer's priced like Jack In The Box tacos. This place is really two bars.... Sunday afternoon bear bust and the rest of the week. The rest of the week: not your Dallas pretty boys, dark ambience helps hide many of the scars and blemishes, but the group is hear to get drunk and maybe connect with another man whose beauty is enhanced by beer goggles. No pretense, a sometimes frisky mens room, its worth a stop on your day's bar hop if yo venture off the strip. SUNDAY: Picture this: hundreds of bare chested bear men out in the outdoor patio, cooled by sweat and so many spilled 50 cent drafts. If you like this sort of crowd, arrive at 4 with a twenty in your pocket, and you will leave very buzzed, wet, and horned up from all the feeling up. Boys forget the chest waxing cause this is the place is for the bears. Grrrr. I myself do not subscribe to the bear scene but I must say the frigid dark bar was like stepping into heaven straight from the hellacious heat of a Texas summer Sunday. Take a look around, behind this door you won't find any pretty boys that work at MAC, it's all men here. I mean packed with real axe swinging lumberjack men, with hairy chests and beards. So it's time to do what I came here to do - Drinks please! So here's the deal, I love vodka and let me tell you, Hidden Door has one of the strongest and best bloody mary's of my life, cheap too. Spicy or mild they'll definitely help keep your buzz goin. Not into the Vodka goodness, drink on the cheap with their .50 draft specials on Sunday, yes...you heard me correctly. Or hell order a round of jello shots and slurp em down- oh the possibilities. We decided to venture into the light onto the giant patio which was of course full of more manly men with Bud and Miller in hand. I saw and heard things which I dare not repeat in front of mixed company here - but I will say I was entertained to say the vary least. Okay, first of all, it is a DIVE. Not that it's a bad thing, but the sooner you accept this, the sooner you can enjoy what the Do' has to offer...and that's a lot. What can I say, the crowd is best described as "carnival"-like, the atmosphere is like a patched-together rec room.......but everytime I go to this bar, I have a really good time. The people are friendly, the drinks are poured heavy, the bartenders have been there since the Cowboys were just an "expansion" team, and it has one of the great gay-bar patios around. Sunday afternoons are their peak crowd, when you'll see the Cedar Springs influx slumming for the day. On a nice sunny Sunday, the patio is a sight that has to be seen. It's always wall-to-wall guys, heavily inebriated, more than a little frisky, and lots of fun. No other night is as crowded, but there is always a noisy vibe in the place that can make any visit anytime of the week a blast. I used to frequent the Hidden Door some years ago before the lofts popped up right next door. I was in the area and decided to stop there on a Sunday night. As a writer (and an avid user of public transport), I walk around with a backpack. I understand the problem the place has had with people bringing in booze from outside. This is always a problem at all bars, not just here. The security guy and someone else right next to him told me I had to leave the bag outside. He wanted me to put it underneath the steel trash can outside. Fine, no big deal. The argument however, started after I told them my tablet was in it followed by a statement made by someone that they were sick of people with bags. That statement meant that, if I wasn't already being categorized as a hobo, that I was almost getting lumped into "the mix." I wanted to clarify that this wasn't the case, and trying to teach the security guy a lesson in being able to tell the difference because that's a big part of the problem in society, that people generalize to the point where it's insulting. They want to make their job easier so why not just "half-ass" things out? The consistent problem here was him remembering that he had made the statement and he became annoyed to the point where he said he was sick of talking about it and it was what it was. Again, I had no problem leaving the bag behind but a writer on public transport is different from a homeless dude. I've got money to spend. I will visit the place again in the future, as it's a great spot, but my job is to change the minds of stupidly stubborn people, in the end he listened to what I had to say and I went on my merry way somewhere else. read more

Friendly, everybody leaves their attitude outside. Plenty of free parking. Had an undeserved rep as a dive, after a major renovation it's on par with or above the others. Nothing but trashy people here. The bartender was very rude and refused me water after he is the one that got me drunk. I told him I had to drive and wanted to sober up. However he told me it was my problem. I had to leave my car there and take an Uber home. The restrooms are horribly maintained. Avoid this place at all costs. As you might run the risk of getting who knows what diseases. This is the last time I visit this place. read more

I have came to this bar at least 3 times previous to tonight. Me, and 3 other friends decided to visit this bar because I recommended it due to my past experiences there. Two of the 3 friends i went with are part of the LGBTQ community. We walked in and order drinks. The bartender served us, and as we got our drinks, the manager grabbed the drinks from our hands and the security guard escorted us out. We asked him why they wanted us to leave, and he said he had no idea. Even the bartender was confused as to why we were getting kicked out when we asked him. We still have no idea why we were asked to leave, but we all truly believe we were asked to leave because we were girls (even though me and 3 other girl friends have been there before). I would not recommend going to this bar unless you are prepared to get kicked out for no reason. read more

What a great place to meet new people and have a great time! The staff are absolutely the friendliest you are going to find (especially Harvey)! The large covered outdoor back patio is so large that many functions and shows are put on there. The "quiet bar" in the back has a large HDTV and a trophy case for displaying many of the Dallas-based gay organizations' trophies (including the Dallas Bears, etc.). The drinks are very well made and not weak at all. The pool table area is a great place to hang out and choose tunes and listen to the iTunes jukebox (which is broadcast throughout the entire bar so you can go outside and still hear your songs)! This place is great and it's a very easy place to meet new and great people! A Dallas staple gay bar! Always something going on, and EVERYONE is welcome at The Hidden Door (including drag queens)! I came here to support a friend who was too scared to come here alone. We were also out celebrating my birthday. I don't care what city you're visiting, but I think gay bars are always the best and safest places to be if you're a straight woman who wants to have all the fun with a man; but without having to deal with their hormones. Gay bars are also going to be fun on any given night. I was even stoked to share a bathroom with a man while I was there. My best friend was disappointed in me for not checking out what he was working with. Hidden Door is full of friendly regulars; and strong drinks at a great price. It's a shame there isn't a decent dance floor; because I think the boys here love to dance! I was not inside the door 10 minutes before I was whisked to an open area and twirrled around like a princess. I suck at true couples dancing, but nothing makes a girl feel more like a girl when she is asked to dance. It was lovely! Where I would put the dance area, are two pool tables. Let me tell you something, Texans can play some pool! Dang, I saw some pretty well thought out shots. Perhaps having the pool tables keeps the bar a little more on the mature side, which also makes the older men feel more invited. I think a dance floor could draw a younger crowd. I have to admit, I wasn't ready to see gay men wearing cowboy hats and boots. Any man for that matter. Dallas freaked me out in that sense. What a foreign concept compared to Chicago. It makes me feel like I am at a costume party. What was interesting to me was getting to know how the gay men handle their sexuality down here. It was much different from the boys in Chicago. I could extrapolate, but I don't want to get specific. My friend doesn't advertise that he is gay, but when I came to visit, was nice to see him be able to be himself around me. I could tell he had a really good time and he didn't want to leave so early. When you're here, you're family. I don't know if it's always like this but I was sad to go as well. What a great crowd! Ok this is a pretty decent dive. Awesome back patio with misters and a stage. Two bars inside with darts and pool. They also have Jukebox. A couple of things that makes this dive stand out above the rest is they open at 0700 and do 12oz mixed Vodka specials all day. Great place to catch a Bloody Mary for $3, and, I hear a lot of classic rock kicking through the speakers when I'm there. That's a nice break, as I am a huge classic rock lover. read more

One of my favorite bars for a few reasons. One is actual gay men, unlike the Cedar Springs strip, the clientele is 99% gay men with a woman in the mix every now and then. I love the fact that it looks like a regular chill place to have a drink and talk. I love the fact of how nice the bartenders and patrons are. I notice the patrons seem to have a dislike for the Cedar Springs strip. But yes the Eagle and the Hidden Door are probably the best gay bars off the strip. My only gripe is the bar only takes cash, but they do have an ATM. read more

The best neighborhood gay bar in Dallas. Yes it is a hole-in-the-wall dive bar.....but that is half the "charm" of the Hidden Door. The other half is the wonderful bartenders. Harvy, James, Brian, Calvin, & Robin (just to name a few) are qucik with a smile and a fresh coctail. I love this Bar, it my favorite bar to go to. 50 cent beer bust can never ever ever get old. The atmosphere here is quite dodgy, but it's expected and makes it part of it's charm. The bartenders are all really nice and server you quickly. I really love going here for all the different types of people that go here. It is a hopping place on a sunday starting early around 11 and tapering off around 5 - 7. I never feel looked down on at this bar and most people are pretty cool and laid back. I definitely recommend this bar to anyone feeling up for cheap drinks and maybe a few gropes. Good luck! read more
