My husband and I made a reservation at Hidden Fish to celebrate his birthday and we had a great time. Environment/Experience: It's an intimate omakase experience with only 12 seats available. Seats and reservation times are specific because everyone starts at the same time. If you get there early, guests are able to get a drink and wait at the side tables and appreciate how they prepare. There are 3 chefs total and each are assigned to every 4 guests which made the service faster and the experience more personable. Service: Huge shout out to our server Sammie who was very personable, checked on us often, and always filled our waters. I really enjoyed chatting it up with her. Shout out to our Chef Sam who was served us fast with each plate. Food: The 90 min omakase included 18 courses-- good bang for your buck. We also ordered a 300ml Sake, which Sammie helped us choose. We opted for Pure Dawn which was a bit drier. I appreciated that we were given a copy of the 18 course menu and a pencil so we could make notes and mark the ones we liked best. At the very end, you can order à la carte. For us, we had to order another piece of Miso-Seared Black Cod. We were pretty stuffed at the end! Overall: Plenty of food for a great price. A bonus is that you can use your Amex Plat/Gold Resy credit at this restaurant. Great food, great service. We will certainly be back!

This restaurant is small and cozy, which is perfect having an intimate omakase experience. That being said, it is far from stiff and formal! Both the staff and sushi chefs are fun, great conversationalists, and super knowledgeable on the different fish. The omakase experience was great! Some of the freshest fish I've had, and a lot of new experiences as well. For example, they served a species of Japanese barracuda that was quite delicious. Quite contrasting of the reputation of barracuda on this side of the globe! The uni was some of the best I've had and we even had a sake shot with the chefs to top off the night. If you love sushi, go discover Hidden Fish.

Atmosphere was great & very intimate. You definitely get top notch attention from the waiting staff. Also the chefs do a phenomenal job explaining what you're going to be eating. Every bite was delicious

Went for a belated Birthday. The kids paid for dinner. Michelin recommended. Great imported sashimi from around the world. Fresh, tasty and well prepared. Chef Steven was very enjoyable to talk to and did great prep job.

We've tried quite a few omakases like this and this might move into our top spot. Staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly through the entire experience and it felt like a lot of the guests knew each other and staff from coming in regularly. Every piece of nigiri was perfect and the order they went in was very deliberate and planned out. My drinks were never empty and if even the smallest speck of rice fell onto the counter, someone came by to clean it almost instantly. The sushi chef also noticed that I was left handed and placed all of my pieces on my plate so that it was easier to grab with my left hand. Excellent quality and tons of attention to detail!

OK, so I'm gonna round up from 4 1/2 stars to give Hidden Fish a 5. The food is spectacular. We had Louis as our chef and he was great about explaining each course as he prepared it. Everything was so thoughtfully presented. The quality of the fish is off the charts superb. The service was excellent as well, attentive without being too present. We had 18 courses and then opted for an additional course because we all wanted to try the scallop. My favorites were the red snapper, the salmon, the black cod, the Toro and the Uni, but they were all great. I especially liked the sear that he gave the fish when he used the torch on a few of the dishes. My only issue with the experience is that it's so quick. They are very upfront about that when you make the reservation and and communicate with you about that well during the meal. They even text before you get there to ask you about pre-ordering drinks and tell you that you are welcome to stay and have a drink in their lounge after. When we were done eating, I didn't really see anywhere that there was a lounge where we could sit. I barely drink any alcohol anymore and we split a bottle of sake and I felt like I had a tiny bit of a buzz and I needed a little bit of time to just kind of chill and chat with my friends, maybe have a dessert or something and let that wear off. Plus we just spent $900+ on dinner for 4 people and because the experience is so engaging we never really had a chance to catch up with each other. I did not feel like the atmosphere there was conducive to that. You finish eating and they hand you the bill and it's like thank you and good night. We ended up walking over to the Mexican restaurant in the parking lot for some french fries and just to chill and chat for a little bit. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to someone looking for a wonderful Omakase experience. Personally, it's not somewhere I would go often, it's a special treat. I would probably skip the alcohol altogether next time and then plan for us to go out to dessert afterwards, somewhere on Convoy Street, since that isn't available there.

We got lucky with reservations! Our friend was able to secure 3 seats for hidden fish and we were so excited!! The seating is around the sushi chefs and quite intimate. 12-13 seats in the room. Room was bright and airy. The omakase was 18 piece for around 1-1.5 hours. Well paced. Fresh seafood and nice balance of taste! The chefs tell you where eat fish was sourced and the staff are able to answer if we had any questions. Nice that the staff were attentive and water was constantly replenished. My top faves were the uni + ikura, black cod, otoro!

Delicious omakase experience! I had booked reservations to dine here for my fiancé's birthday a few months ago. We love going and exploring different omakase spots, and this one does not disappoint. It was delicious for every bite. It was a bright room, full of wonderful servers and chefs. They also accommodated well to my shellfish allergy and had given me other sashimi options to substitute. I'm so excited to come back when the time comes!

I really enjoyed our time dining here! The location itself really is hidden--you would barely be able to see it just driving on Convoy. I liked that the location has an ADA ramp as the main entrance. The food was amazing. I really enjoyed the albacore!! Slightly smoky, amazing flavor. You can order a la carte at the end, which we fully took advantage of. No dessert menu at the end. But it's okay because it's on Convoy anyway. Jenny was our server and she was really nice! Tips to save for next time: -Ask for tap water. I ordered still water and didn't realize that defaults to glass bottled water. -POS calculated tip based on total, instead of subtotal like it should be. Do your own math when calculating the tip! It really frustrates me that POSs are doing this because it is creating a culture where tip on total is the norm. No! It is supposed to be on subtotal.

Ate at Hidden Fish last night to celebrate my birthday! My last visit to Hidden Fish was back in 2020. Since 2020 the price for the Omakase has increased. So this is definitely a special occasion only restaurant for me. During the omakase experience, the set up is intimate. They have about 3 sushi chefs, and all of the seating is directly in front of the chefs at the bar. The chefs converse with you as they prepare the sushi. It's a fun experience and relaxing watching the experts at work. Additionally, all of the servers are attentive and also go out of their way to make conversation with you too. It's a very welcoming and inclusive environment. Every single sushi nigiri prepared for the omakase was delicious. The 18 piece - 90 minute omakase is well paced. I also enjoy learning and hearing about where the fish are sourced from and what part of the fish it's from. Some of my favorite notable pieces were the sea bream, the albacore (cold smoked in hickory), and the o toro.

    Jenny Z.

Service is super friendly and an overall nice experience, but the caliber of the fish is not quite at the same level of some other local omakase spots despite being similar in price range.

Still fantastic fish, still wonderfully personable and precise service. This place is a great spot for Omakase. A true San Diego gem.

Had a reservation for the 7pm seating for a party of 2 on a Tuesday. There was plenty of parking in the plaza. We started with ordering a carafe of sake. Our server was very helpful in helping us choose one to our liking and it ended up being delicious. The omakase menu is mainly nigiri, with a couple other dishes. Everything was amazing. All the fish was so fresh and tasty and the rice was flavorful and the perfect amount. My highlights were the sea bream, amberjack, Uni + ikura, chu toro, o toro, and toro tartare. Service was amazing. Very attentive from the servers. And the chefs were great at pacing the entire meal to you. You can also order à la carte after the omakase if you want more. Overall I had a great first time here. From the fish to the service, everything was amazing. The price point also isn't as pricey as other omakase places. I can definitely see myself coming back here again. I definitely would recommend try here!

Came here today with some friends for lunch. We started with the spicy garlic edamame and the aburi cha sui. The edamame was more garlicky with a hint of spice, but not "spicy"... but it was definitely very flavorful. The aburi cha sui wasn't my favorite because it had a hint of sweetness to it (almost like a teriyaki flavor), but my friends liked it. We also order the fried chicken (after noticing it at another table) and it was very crunchy, packed with flavor and very juicy. I didn't care too much for the sauce it came with (not really sure what it was but it was a creamy light brownish sauce with a hint of vinegar to it) , but it didn't need any sauce because it was spiced perfectly. I had the large spicy tan tan ramen, which I split with my friend. I was a huge bowl and even splitting it I didn't even finish my half. The noodles are fresh and cooked nicely with a good bounce. There was a ton of meat which was cut up and a pile of thinly sliced green onions. If you are concerned about the " spicy"ness, it was very mild and not at all spicy, but definitely very flavorful. Our server was friendly and attentive. Overall.. everyone enjoyed the appetizers and their ramen and had a great experience!

Love that you get to see the chefs cook (grill) in front you at the bar. Their menu is simple which I say is always a good thing. Unfortunately there were a couple of skewers I wasn't fond of- like the beef tongue. Listen, I've had beef tongue prepared in a variety of ways including yakitori style, but this one just wasn't up to par... The tongue still tasted like tongue. I know that sounds weird, but it's like they didn't clean it very well- which in turn made it taste & smell like part of the cow still and I am not down with that. Also, the chicken thigh wasn't as cooked as I thought it would be... Maybe it's suppose to be prepared that way? IDK. That was also a no for me. The highlights were everything else! It's cute that they keep the bone in when you order the chicken wing. It's butterflied on the skewer, different. Loved all the pork items we got as well as the beef skewers. Their takoyaki [$7.50] was super good too! Skewers range from $3.75 to $7.00 each with 3-4 pcs a skewer. Everyone that helped us was friendly! Big parking lot and the restaurant was nicely kept. The ice cream dessert topped us off in such a good way. We'll be back to try more skewers and more of their menu.
