My holiday dinner reservation at a resto in this neighborhood was fashionably late in the evening, like at 9pm. To sooth the hunger pains of my dinner companion and myself, I proposed to visit HT for wine and snack prior to our dinner. We each had a glass of red of variety that were outside our norm. She had beaujolais ("I never order beaujolais!" said my dinner companion) and I had cinsault, which I only occasionally order. We got a test pouring before committing (awesome!) and both were juicy and delicious. This may sound silly, but sometimes at a wine bar, the wine tastes to me stale, like it came from a bottle that had been opened a day or two earlier--this is one of my pet peeves. The wine we had at High Treason tasted fresh, and I appreciate that. There was a small glitch with the food order, but we enjoyed the pupus platter--kind of an unusual combination of bar foods but generous in portion and tasty. I think the place was slightly understaffed but it was still relaxing. We will definitely return, hopefully next time we will have time to chat with the owner/sommelier more about the wines. read more

Looks like I'm kind of the odd ball out: while most people rave about this place, I can't say I loved my visit here. You know what I think it is that didn't make me fall in love with this place: it made me feel inferior and unsophisticated. Why? - Well, I like drinking a glass of wine, but I honestly can't tell a high quality wine from a bad quality wine. I understand that the folks who opened up High Treason are sommeliers of some of the finest establishments. And my friend - who is a true wine expert - verified that they really have excellent wines on offer; if also pricey ones. But for me that just wasn't enough as I - as a wine dumbo- felt somewhat dwarfed and mediocre in this space...and that didn't feel good. For me the surrounding atmosphere and the people that I'm with is much more important. And honestly the atmosphere also didn't agree with me: I thought it was a cold space. Both in the literal sense of the word and also in the figurative one. Maybe they were trying to recreate the atmosphere of a drafty wine cellar in the French wine regions? It's all very straight-lines, clean cuts and minimal decoration...and I like a wine bar to feel like my living room. Guess I should be drinking from home more often! My gf had that first and then went to a Pinot. She then went back to the cab cuz that was her favorite as well. I started with the Chateauneuf-du-Pape and then asked the server what he would recommend to follow that. He suggested the Cote du Rhone which was a nice follow up. I ended the night with the cabernet. I honestly don't know much about wines. I just know what I like when I drink it. Typically full bodied and bold, so the cab fit that nicely. The servers were very sweet and helpful. The space has a little swank to it, but it still feels cozy. They were sweet enough to give us a small bowl of Popcorn gratis. The Inner Richmond is fortunate to have High Treason as a new neighbor. Very unassuming from the street (a plain, brown storefront without a sign) this wine bar is gorgeous once inside. This beautiful wine bar with stellar service and unique selections would be right at home in the Mission. It's a lucky placement in the Richmond, and gives an indication where this neighborhood may be headed. Now that I'm living in Marin, I find meeting friends in the city involves finding an "in between" spot and have now spent some time discovering this neighborhood that seemed completely out of the way when I actually lived in the city. Always great for Korean, Vietnamese and dim sum, now things are really opening up here and High Treason is as good as it gets due to their terrific low key staff and excellent wine pours. These guys know their stuff and I was delighted to discover Bodega Perez Pascuas version of "El Pedrosal" by the glass, a dark inky mystery of a tempranillo. Do order their crisp croquettes with melty, savory manchego and jamon interior. The wine was so good that we both purchased a bottle to take home, after drinking a glass. If you are a local you can take away for 40% off the bottle price, if you are taking a bottle out the door to go. A relative bargain. Come here for wine and a small nosh for a tapas-like experience in an attractive setting with knowledgable, friendly staff. read more

Great local spot on Clement in the Inner Richmond! Came here with a friend for wine and lite bites. Atmosphere is approachable and felt like a tasting room in wine country. It wasn't too crowded but had a steady stream of patrons-one of the groups actually brought their kids and the bar set up a table for them with crayons and fries which I thought was cute. We tried a glass of white each and a Rosé. When we first inquired about the menu, the first two things my friend asked about were not available which I always find disappointing at a bar/restaurant in general. The wines we did try were great and I wish I could remember the names but the person who helped us had great suggestions so you probably can't go wrong. They do give you a generous taste before you commit to a glass. For food we did a bowl of their popcorn (porcini brown butter) and a toast with burrata and English peas. The toast was AMAZING (fresh and bright flavors) and we immediately tried to figure out what was in it so we could recreate for ourselves. Popcorn was also surprisingly addicting as well. All in all a great place to stop in for a drink and a bite. I liked that it wasn't too loud so I could actually have a conversation with my girlfriend and not have to shout. Really want to like this place since I love wine and we're hard up for anything other than sports bars in the Richmond. TLDR: I don't recommend it. They have QR code menus at the tables but unfortunately my phone wasn't getting service so I asked the bartender if I could get a paper menu. His demeanor in response was one of the most abrasive I've experienced in awhile. He was incredibly dismissive and annoyed when he said no, and no they did not have wifi I could use to view it and that if I knew what I wanted he could help me but otherwise I "needed to figure it out". It was pretty unpleasant and felt a bit sexist as well, cannot imagine him speaking to a man the same way. I've worked in food service myself and understand it can be frustrating when management insists on a bad policy that you have to deal with (like no paper menus). But that's really no excuse to be so brusque and treat someone like a hassle; it was a reasonable request made in good faith in a nearly empty bar. To top it off the seating is incredibly uncomfortable. If you are waiting for a table at Burma Superstar and really don't want to go to a sports bar, maybe try it. But I don't recommend it for any other scenario. read more

We were referred here for a late lunch and we were not disappointed. It was quiet, I think because of the smoke in the air, at least until 6 women walked in. Nice open space, amazing wine selection and bartenders are DJing too with a plethora of album choices. I think we tried nearly everything. 2 of the conserva in tins (octopus and squid in ink) served with bread and salad, cheese and charcuterie, burrata toast (outstanding with the romanesco!) fried chicken sliders (moist and crunchy on brioche)baby kale salad, chocolate pot de creme and coconut panna cotta. Oh, and the POPCORN! Porcini. Brown. Butter. Popcorn. I will try to replicate this and the burrata toast at home. Perhaps it was just what we ordered, but only my experience here was pretty average. We had a glass of Zinfandel and orange wine that was really good, but the Merlot was just ok. Table service was a little sleepy considering we went when they weren't busy at all. The ambiance didn't quite click for me--some sort of blend of industrial and retro that I didn't love. What ended up being the biggest damper was the amount of pestering little flies buzzing about the whole place and getting at our faces and drinks. Our server stopped midpour to change a record. Actually, our service the entire time we were at High Treason was super weird. We couldn't get the two servers to pay attention to us long enough to even get us an additional plate when we had another person join us. The wine was fine, and the charcuterie plate was extremely skimpy. For how much it costs, they really do not give you very much. The fries were more like small shavings of potato dropped into oil. Treasonous indeed! Friend recently picked this spot for a recent HH meetup after work. We had our one drink and bounced. Ambience/Space: First off, the space is very sterile feeling. There's a theme/decor, but lacks personality (no spinning records doesn't count). It also lacks charm, instead opting for a cookie-cutter wine bar experience (why does every wine bar strive to be the same?). Show a little more personality--half the experience of any bar is its personality. Menu: They truly have a huge menu/selection, so props there. But! Menu layout is confusing as both glass and bottle prices appear in the same column, making it hard to discern what a bottle price would be if you didn't just want a glass. Tasting notes would have been a plus and insightful for customers to review (and saves your staff time in having to describe each possible selection). Service/Food: Efficient enough, but super dull interactions with the staff. Food sounded good, but seemed skimpy based on other nearby tables, so we skipped ordering. Harsh? Yes! I'm being totally harsh, but I did wait a bit before posting my review just to see if I still felt the same. Clearly I still felt the same. I give this place 6 months at best. There are too many other fun and personable options in the inner Richmond to patron this place. read more

This is a great wine bar if you find yourself in the Richmond. While I don't love the all-stool seating (which gets uncomfortable after a while) the food & drink are excellent, they sell bottles to go, and I love that they are playing vinyl albums from start to finish. (It helps that all of my favorite albums are on display there.) The staff is very friendly and happy to make recommendations in language that anyone can understand. The bread and house butter is excellent, as is the popcorn with the porcini butter. There are many other snacks I would like to try! It's not the cheapest spot, but it is a great one! read more

Visiting San Francisco for a few days, we sought a "neighborhood" wine bar (as opposed to a "tourist" wine bar) that also offered some light food beyond the cheeseplate & charcuterie default. This seemed like a good choice in the mid-Richmond district. There were only 2 other customers when we arrived at 5:00 pm on a Tuesday, but others arrived to fill all the seats within the hour in the Spartan minimalist dark-ish interior. Only one bartender/server/wine steward was on duty, but he managed to give us prompt enough service and even spared us a little time to pick his brain before he was forced into one-armed paperhanger mode. It's always encouraging and expectant of fresh fare to see in-house printed single-page menus. We selected one (*2) thing from the each food menu section (Bites / *Snacks / Plates / Conserva in Tins / Afters): Deviled Eggs, *Duck Fat Fries, *Empanadas, Fried Chicken Sliders, Sardines, except "Afters". Our overwhelming favorite was the Empanadas, filled with cremini mushrooms, aged cheddar and crema. Delicious and very wine-friendly. We probably would have enjoyed the Duck Fat Fries more had they been served initially instead of 15 minutes later than the rest and nearing our level of satiation. Also, since the evolution of fries has branched into many size species, they should be describe as "shoestring" or "threadlike" on the menu. This size designation clues one in they will cool rapidly, so eat with all haste. We also enjoyed a glass of Champagne, a Spätburgunder (light red) from Germany, a Sake, and a fantastically delectable Ch Coutet 2003 Sauternes. I would like to see more still and sparkling wines offered, and fewer Sherries, vermouths, etc. and fewer beers, cider, sake, but that's just me. Why do wine lists nowadays have to be composed entirely of wines of unfamiliar producer / variety / appellation of origin or all of the above? Is this to conceal the profit margin? ...to verify the sommelier's skills? ...to project ego in competition with other somms? ALL wine lists, IMHO, should have a couple of familiar "safe" choices for the unwashed, minimally wine-saavy, but appreciative customer, from which they can be entranced and upgraded by the somm who posesses the true skills of an advocate. In any case, there are a few tasty morsels to be had here, along with a broad (but not deep and not necessarily vinous) selection of fermented beverages on hand. read more

Another great opening in the Richmond District recently! We stopped by for their grand opening tonight and were not disappointed. The space has a modern look to it with the gray painted walls and dark tables, but the large skylights above the main seating area help give the otherwise heavy space a level of lightness. The wall adjacent to the bar has a variety of contemporary paintings, and directly above the bar is a nice installation utilizing wine crates. I really like how they approached seating at High Treason - abundant wine bar seating, a few high tables, a few low tables, and standing room with a ledge. There is also seating upstairs that we will need to check out next time! The wine list is very French-heavy, but seriously you could choose any of the wines on that list and be happy. I had the Cava Rosé, which was exactly what I needed on a warm afternoon. My boyfriend had the Lambrusco and was equally happy. John is an exceptional sommelier and answered our questions with ease and enthusiasm. Rachel also has a great knowledge of the wine and beer at High Treason and helped my bf choose a delicious and yeasty Kölsch for his next drink. High Treason's list also includes a cider section, sherry section, and dessert wine selection. We also got to try out some nibbles from the kitchen - a walnut levain with salt-flaked butter is complimentary and quite delightful (paired well with my Cava!). We also tried their sampler and were especially pleased with the selection for $10 - a ham pâté toast with kumquat, a marinated carrot salad with ricotta and slivered almond, Serrano ham and manchego croquette, and grape in Gorgonzola with almond crust. I am so in love with this space!! This is such a great addition to the neighborhood, what a gem! I am not a drinker but I love being social and meeting up my friends who live in the area. Found this place thanks the to the Yelp and I am SO HAPPY to have found it. We came here at 2pm on a Sunday and spent over an hr here. I am a red wine kind of person and more in the dry side but I was looking for a sweeter dry red today. The bar tender suggested Vocal Vineyards and let me tell you....YOU NEED TO DRINK THIS! It's so crisp and perfect as a mid day wine. I also tried the P.Quiles Vermouth and it's absolutely amazing. The bartenders were so friendly and warm that they made it feel like I was already a regular even though it was my first time here. They have an awesome record selection and if you ask they will play what you request! I will definitely be coming back here again and suggest this place to EVERYONE!!!! read more

I liked High Treason and am glad I was able to check it out, as it is in an area I am rarely in. I was in the neighborhood though and decided to come by and grab some wine and food. The food menu is small but quite interesting. I tried the fried quail, duck fat fries, and a couple glasses of wine; they also gave me complimentary olive bread and butter. Overall, everything was really salty which made it a little hard to enjoy. The quail was fried pretty nicely and was tasty but was just overwhelmingly salty after a few bites. It came with some veggies (squash mostly) and the veggies were actually my favorite thing I ate at High Treason. Fries were good at first, but again, really salty and one note after a while. I liked them more when I soaked them in the broth(?) that the quail was on top of. I think I would have preferred the fries to be just a tad thicker (I do like thin fries but these were crazy thin, more like a garnish) and with some kind of sauce. The butter that came with the bread was excellent but the bread itself was again oddly salty (maybe because of the olives in it?). They also have a wine and beer list that has some pretty good options. My favorite thing was a sparkling red wine which I unexpectedly really enjoyed. The prices skew slightly on the high side, even compared to other SF bars (I have had the same beer I had here for $1-2 less at a bunch of places for example) but nothing too crazy. The verdict: a pretty nice menu and great space and atmosphere. The flavors and cooking of the food was good; the seasoning was definitely too heavy overall. I would definitely consider coming back if in the area, but wouldn't come out of my way to come here. 3.5 stars probably but rounding up because the saltiness was the main reason it wasn't 4 stars and that is a pretty easy fix. read more

He worked with my budget, sourced the bottles in time for my event, and shared information about the wine and the winery.
