Yikes! We tried this place after it being recommended to us, and I wish we hadn't. The lady on the phone that took our order was rude, the food itself was awful, and the prices are pretty high for the quality they're sending out. My first impression when I opened the take out container was "come on, I asked for fried rice and they gave me white rice!" Upon further inspection and finding the lone onion, I realized that the very very light brownish rice was in fact the "fried rice." The chicken fingers tasted of hot plastic, like they had been microwaved too long, the chicken inside was very dry and tough. The pork strip was brown as if they had thrown it in a dirty frying pan to heat it up, it lacked any flavor whatsoever and the consistency of it was unlike anything I've ever tasted before. This small takeout restaurant has been our go to for simple Chinese food. I can't remember a bad meal coming from here and more than a few really good ones. This week we actually hit them twice (been that kind of week). Pictured is second go, a lunch special of chicken chow mien with egg roll plus chicken with cashews (small order). Not visible is small wonton soup (with six wontons). Walked in to order and everything was done in less then ten minutes. Staff is cordial, place is clean. Just moved over here so I was pleased to see a Chinese joint nearby. Got takeout of course! Both of our entrees were tasty with lots of veggies, meat and heat. Chicken fingers were tasty and not too breast. Rangoons we're a little too sweet but tasted pretty good for dessert. Employees could've been friendlier but who cares? Today I tried the Highland China House for the first time. I had a recommendation to try it out, so I did. I ordered 2 lunch combos, and a order of chicken lo mein. First being any 4 appetizers, and rice. I chose fried wontons, beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki and crab rangoons. The fried wontons were ok. The beef and chicken teriyaki were so lacking in flavor. I couldn't taste any teriyaki flavor at all. The crab rangoons though were amazing! I absolutely loved these. Lots of flavor, perfectly cooked. Yum! Next I tried the L12 Sesame chicken with fried rice and a egg roll. The sesame chicken is alright. It reminded me of the mall food type of chicken that I'd get years ago. The fried rice was bland, didn't care for it. The egg roll was average. Nothing special. Last, the chicken lo mein. Like most everything else it was very bland. Overall, my first visit will probably be my last, unless I want some crab rangoons. The dishes are fairly priced, but the absent flavors in almost every dish just isn't for me. read more

I stopped for lunch at Highland China House which is located in the Shoreyville Plaza in East Rochester. The place itself is very cozy, which is order at the counter with open kitchen and seating across from the counter. The small fish tank on the counter has a few interesting tropical fish and a toad swimming around in the tank. The menu offerings include the standard Chinese dishes and house specials such as seafood pan fried noodles, Szechuan triple crown, orange beef, sesame chicken, and more. 26 Special Combination Plates (served with pork fried rice or white rice) are served all day, lunch ($4.75-$4.95) and dinner ($6.75-$6.95). The drawback with the combinations is that the appetizer served with the combination plate can vary and they charge you 75 cents per appetizer substitution (ie: I want crab rangoon instead of chicken wing, extra charge). Many other Chinese places I've been to give you choices of appetizers (usually for lunch specials) without upcharge. I almost ordered the Special 15: Beef Lo Mein & Chicken Wing, but I did not care for chicken wings and instead ordered the Special 2: Pork Egg Foo Young & Egg Roll. The good amount of food was pretty decent. The egg foo young was deep fried very crisp on the outside, but it was not that moist on the inside which had peas, carrots, onions, & roast pork, thick gravy in a separate container. Recently gave them another chance, only to find new people working there when I went. Very friendly, very accommodating, fast service, fresh food. I ordered what I used to order before I had my issues here prior, and they knocked it out of the park! I will for sure be making this a regular option again for my takeout! Service was great and fast. Adhering to Covid protocols and have to say I am a stickler for good Chinese food. I think they are the best in the area. So glad I rediscovered them after several years. I've been getting food from Highland China house since 2014. It is usually always good, and never over 10 minutes to wait. Portions sometimes tend to be inconsistent but other than that I've always enjoyed the food here and the prices are good as well. read more

i've been eating at highland china house for years, it's the perfect americanized chinese food you could hope for. it's standard fried food, very VERY inexpensive, but the taste doesn't match the price. it's my favorite local chinese food, and the staff are always incredibly nice. the food is prepared fast, and the online ordering portal makes it super easy to order your food. the restaurant is small, but it's a locally owned business. i really respect the family and the children that work there. read more

Frequent customer at Highland China, have tried most of the menu at this point and have not found any real standouts that are really disappointing. Online ordering is fast and easy and pick-up has yet to be delayed. Crab ran-goons in particular are much bigger and more filled then any other Chinese in Rochester. I have been a loyal customer with Highland China House in Rochester, NH. I placed an order for food with them they screwed up my order. They left out food on my order but they did charge me for it. I had to go back to them to get what I ordered and paid for and didn't get. This is the second time this has happened. I have been buying food from them for over 10 years now. I have made a choice to not go there ever again. They have lost me as a customer for ever. They have gone down hill in service and product. read more
