On popcorn day they were giving away full size bags of popcorn. I took a bag of pepper popcorn to try something different. My daughter took a bag of traditional salt popcorn. Both were good, the pepper not too intense, we preferred the traditional. Love that we have a local place to get popcorn and really appreciate that it's kosher to boot. Bought the "Slim Kim Original". Did not like this popcorn AT ALL!!! ZERO flavor, weird chewy texture and it had some kind of strange flavor that I couldn't put my finger on and have never tasted in any popcorn in the past. Maybe I have to be a Kosher eater to say good things but I can offer this-- my favorite popcorn was out of stock, Slim Kim regular was "on sale" (buy date was a year away) so I tried SK. ...should have been suspicious about popcorn in a Plastic Bag rather than foil bag! SK is "chewy" instead of my preferred crunchy popcorn. If you like Chewy popcorn, SK is for you--not me. read more

I do love the flavor of the popcorn. I only eat the regular kind. Most of the popped kernels are pretty big, but there are always an awful lot of unpopped at the bottom of the bag. Seems like the bags have just gotten smaller, and now there's no zip closure at the top. I'm happy to support a small, local business, and I understand the economic shift these days. Noticed Slim Kim garlic popcorn at the Jewel in Glenview fall 2018. Simple & few ingredients, local source, & reasonably priced, so I gave it a try and loved it. It has just the right amount of garlic. Have since tried pepper flavor - it's pretty good too. Overall, I've bought about a dozen bags now and haven't had a bad experience yet. read more

I am very sad to read the poor customer service reported in some of these reviews. I stopped by Highland Pop today which is a Sunday, a day they are normally closed. I noticed some lights were on and I saw a lady in the back who kindly signaled for me to come in. This lady could not have been nicer to me. I assume she was the owner. Even though they were technically closed I was able to purchase a couple bags of their diet popcorn. Incredible "skinny" popcorn. The kernels are shaped difference than any other popcorn out there. They are fully round and the popcorn has the perfect amount of salt and its amazing. I have never been to their store but it is available at all of the local nor short grocery stores. read more

We went to Highland Pop and I was very very excited to go. I am a huge popcorn fanatic and love small local stores. I liked the store at first and had high expectations going to this store. We walked in and the owner was busy with some customers, so we waited. We were eventually greeted by an employee. He was very kind and helpful and was telling us about the popcorn and the business as well. We were getting along well and he gave us some samples to try and we thought they were ok. But we continued talking, until the owner rudely interrupted and asked if we were going to buy anything. And being a huge popcorn fanatic, I was definitely going to buy something. Until she grabbed our samples away and basically ended up being very very rude to us and telling the employee helping us to go back in the kitchen and leaving no one to help us anymore. So we just left. Very disappointed in the customer service of the owner and will probably never go back to the store again, even though I thought this would be my new popcorn shop. Would not recommend anyone to go especially if they don't want to be talked down upon and be disrespected. read more

Just tried Slim Kim popcorn for the first time and all I can say is it's AWESOME! I usually buy Skinny Pop popcorn but couldn't find it at Jewel. Saw a display for Slim Kim popcorn and thought I'd give it a try and I am so glad I did!! It's so much better than Skinny Pop popcorn. Plus it has less calories!! We bought a bag of the Pepper flavored in a local large grocery store in Grand Rapids, and it was not good. It was stale, not at all crispy, and had no taste of anything, let alone some pepper. We wondered if the "packed in plastic" was a good idea? Also, the "best by" date was March, 2019. Sorry to write this, as they did get some good reviews, so maybe consistency is the issue. Great popcorn. Told the owners so after running into them at a Chicago event, and they asked me where I grocery shop, which I thought was awkward, but I named my store anyway. Their response: "They don't sell our popcorn." I like how my simple compliment elicited this reply, working off the assumption that I was going to go out and buy more of their product. Wow, horrible customer service. Total waste of time. I was so looking forward to getting some thank you gifts here as my daughters were accepted to college and thought what a great and cute thank you it would be to give the teachers that wrote their letter of recs some local popcorn wrapped with ribbon with the college colors. The owner who I did not deal with was sitting up front on her cell phone on speaker no less the entire time. It was highly annoying and distracting. She made a second call during my time there to comcast and I had to listen to the annoying recording. Not once offered to help me. The man helping me I believe was her husband. Wasn't too thrilled he would have to be wrapping up 9 bags of popcorn. As if he was too good to do it and wanted me to come back the next day because I pre-order on the phone, even though I had called in advance. Then he wasn't very helfpul when I asked questions about my options or the colors of ribbon etc, it was rather frustrating. Ultimately, I realized I miscounted how many bags I needed and told him and when I was trying to figure out what type of popcorn I need, couldn't concentrate because of the obnoxious recording I had to listen to from the owner's cell phone Finally told him that the phone was too distracting and I couldn't think. He just stared at me blankly like "who cares"? So, after a dumbfounded look on my face that he didn't tell her to at least go in a different room, or at a minimum apologize, I finally just said forget it, I would go somewhere else. Unbelievably, they actually let me walk out the store without placing an order. I'm shocked that they didn't want my business. I had money to burn there. My order was probably going to be $100 order. By the looks of the store, they needed it. I said on my way out, this is not how you do business. Completely unprofessional to sit on a cell phone in that manner, on speaker, no apologizing, not going somewhere else, as if your customers are not important. One other thing I would like to add. Their website has said "under construction" for probably at least 6 if not more months. Their facebook page has no activity. My guess is that they have no funds to maintain a website, their business is in the ground. No surprise based on my experience. Can't imagine they will make it much longer. I left and drove right over to Goodies where they couldn't have been nicer. They wrapped all my bags of candy while I waited and my daughters can't wait to give them to their teachers. After tasting it from my bag, I knew right away that it was not freshly made. Tasted like it was a couple days old. Bought a 2.5 gallon tin of half cheese/half caramel for an exhorbitant price, thinking it would be good. What a waste of money! So many of the cheese kernels were unpopped or unable to be eaten. Garrett's is never like that. I've also purchased popcorn via mail order from a place in Wisconsin (Rural Route 1 Popcorn - free shipping!) that is far superior. Highland pop has moved a few blocks north to Green Bay road. Today the owner is celebrating her 56th birthday by giving free samples of garlic popcorn from 56 cases. The taste is very good but the kernels are not. They seem stale, not fluffy. There are hard bits in most of them. I have not tried anything else and I will probably not go back. read more

Fantastic popcorn, it started with Slim Kim which we found at Heinens, then later picked some up at Sunset Foods. We have been sharing with all our friends. We especially love that its made with coconut oil and non GMO. The caramel corn is less sweet and lighter tasting which is great so your mouth is not sugared out. The cheese popcorn is not oily and staining compared to other brands out there. We like the fact that both cheese and caramel are not overwhelming like (another local brand in the area). Slim Kim is a definite winner and tastier than all the other low cal popcorn from stores. Cannot wait to share with all our friends and family over the holidays with their tasty treats. read more

They are now CRC certified, which is an added bonus for some of us. They helped me come up with a great plan to put small bags of the carmel/cheese mix in the hospitality bags for my daughter's wedding which took place right in Highland Park. Product is delicious, however, all of my experiences with customer service have been thumbs down. The management always seems so overwhelmed and stressed out and recently I had a negative experience. When I called to give feedback about my overall experience, I was told to come in and I would "be given something!" How rude. I LOVE HIGHLAND POP!! I have loved it since they opened but now that they are cRc kosher certified... I love it even more. They are closed on Saturdays because of their kosher certification but are open such other great times, it does not even matter. Kim (the owner) and Lyle (husband) are two of the sweetest people I have ever met. The moment you walk in you are given samples of any popcorn, Italian ice, fudge and now gourmet brownies! I had never been into Highland Pop and not sure I will ever be back after the experience I just had there. I was doing some shopping around town and was super hungry but wanted something fast so I figured popcorn why not? I walked in, said hello and clearly stated it was my 1st time and what did they recommend. The gentleman behind the counter said "sorry we are a kosher shop and closed at 5pm." I was like ok..... looked at my watch it was 5:20pm, so why was the door open? Why did you let me come in instead of stop me at the door. I rated this place before after buying some popcorn from sunset foods. The owner said for me to come in and try it fresh at the store... It was worse! I spent $16 bucks in two medium bags and the Carmel was chewy and the cheese tasted like chemicals. Also, the worker helping me was handling the food and the money at the same time without gloves.
