Rather than order something I didn't want, I ended up having mac and cheese as my entire meal. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience did nothing to make up for it. Our water was never cold, the carrots and potato salad were both disappointing, and the food took far too long to arrive. For a restaurant that presents itself as a nicer dining experience, I expected much better food, service, and hospitality. Instead, my wife's birthday dinner was memorable for all the wrong reasons. We were told they were fully booked, yet those exact booths sat empty during our entire meal. While the ambiance strives to match the restaurant's self-representation of being a fine dining steak and seafood establishment, the food fell a bit flat. I ordered the Filet Mignon and my husband ordered the New York strip; both were only a few tallies above what you could get at any decent, everyday restaurant. We also both ordered a lobster tail, which turned out to be a bit tough. I will say they do have the largest shrimp, which we really enjoyed, and their cocktail sauce was quite tasty. Ultimately, management needs to remember that they are still just a hotel restaurant. To truly captivate customers and justify their fine-dining labels and pricing, they need to refine their seating communication, make everyone who walks in feel seen and appreciated, and inject real culinary ambition into the kitchen, taste, and presentation. Somehow, this place accomplishes both. Most places have what's called a "Barrel" pick. They sample and buy a specific barrel to bottle and serve. Not here. Lily actually contracted to create their own line. So let's first talk about the Bourbon. It's intentionally a lower proof- from past experiences they found that folks who don't really drink a lot of bourbon (gender aside) don't care for higher proofs. I mean, it's around 80 proof- pretty mainstream. I had it in an Old Fashioned and neat, just to see what it's like. Neat- I found it smooth, drinkable and aromatic. In a cocktail, I thought it was a bit sweet for my taste. Not unpleasant, but I want to taste the whiskey in my drink. I will give them credit- to my taste, usually lower proofs come across as thin or watery. This bourbon held up just fine. It's a very limited menu. Only 3 appetizer options. No "Small Plates"- just real food to graze on while enjoying a drink. Nice pasta and pizza selections. No steak or seafood options, which I found interesting (I don't consider frozen shrimp in the same category as a fresh fish filet). But still we had 3 different entrees and they were really tasty. Healthy portions nicely presented. Prices were exceptionally fair and reasonable. It's new and being from the industry I know opening in the winter, with the Ballpark closed, SkyPac and WKU out for the holidays, is hard. But the owner is friendly, knowledgeable and has done a great job of keeping food costs low while still keeping the lights on until things get busier. I'm betting that's why the menu is not more adventurous. Maybe as things pick up he can expand the offerings. Our server was great, attentive and not afraid to make suggestions- which I like.
