Don't let the 1 star reviews discourage you! I'll let you know from my experience that it wasn't a bad experience at all. From the moment you walk inside the building seems rustic but home-like, with oh so spacious bathrooms. It took a while for our food to come out but that's because their system was having problems registering orders, and we were compensated with a discount and a free slice of pie! (it was amazing by the way). Service was excellent, not much waiters but they work fast enough for their manpower. We couldn't find a menu at first, so we weren't sure what to expect. After walking in and taking a look at the menu, we decided to give it a try. My lady ordered the Country Fried Steak breakfast plate, and I had the Highlander breakfast plate. I'd give the Highlander a 5 out of 5 -- it came with everything I wanted and was very satisfying. She rated hers a 4 out of 5 due to a lack of flavor, which I agreed with. We had to add a bit of salt and pepper to bring it out, and I'm usually not one to add extra salt to my food. Not only is the service great and friendly, the food is amazing. So much so that we came here two times on our getaway to Mt. Rainier. One time we got the cheese sticks and they were amazing. Their ranch is delicious with them. The next day we got their club sandwich with onion rings as well as wings. We got garlic Parmesan and hot honey garlic. I do not think it is fair to the newly reopened Highlander to be plagued by reviews from 5-10 years ago. I almost passed this place up but decided to give it a shot since the newer reviews were good, and I am glad I did! I ordered the country fries steak (this Texan's favorite meal besides meatloaf) and it was superb! The portions are huge to where I asked for a box the minute my food came out. I may go back tonight to try the hamburger steak, and eat both leftovers after I head back to the city. This is definitely a must try place! read more

Stopped in for lunch as it was one of the only places open. My expectations were low because of their yelp rating and it doesn't look like much from the outside. I now realize the restaurant recently reopened and the poor reviews are from years ago. My husband and I both got burgers and fries and were pleasantly surprised - seasoned well and great portion sizes. Our server, Patricia, was excellent. Decent food and ok service. The server/hostess/barista was busting her butt well after 9pm to serve as many of the guests coming through the doors a half hour before the kitchen closed. We received our food promptly, water glasses were frequently refilled and the atmosphere was like any small town local bar, music, dancing and karaoke signing on a Saturday evening. There are locals at the bar talking about old cars wearing Hawaiian shirts or plaid. I think i see a display of guns and xxx dvds behind the bar. You can still get draft beer for $1.75 a pint on slower nights. Sweet! The menu had standard fare and other items like country fried steak and eggs. Raucous bar noises create the atmosphere of this place, and everyone says it's incredibly slow. It did seem a long time before the very nice waitress came to take our orders, but I figured that the bar crowd was demanding and insistent, delaying her. We arrived at 6:10 in the evening and appetizers showed up at 7:00. Dinner itself was served at 7:17. The burger (and it's mostly burgers) was guaranteed Angus, whatever that's supposed to tell us. But it was fine. However by 7:40, the soup still hadn't arrived, nor had the waitress been seen again to ask. It wasn't her fault however, she appeared to be the only person working in the whole bar and restaurant (presumably there was also one poor overworked cook hidden in the back somewhere too). One of the bar patrons had to have a friend coach him on how to walk to the door during this ( like " take a step, now try the other foot...") so I'm sure the staff had more challenging demands on their attention. So by 90 minutes we had eaten most of the food that had actually been served. The waitress was able to get back to us finally at 7:43 but I didn't have the heart to mention the soup with all she had been through. So, fast food it's not. read more

Interesting place, obviously with a long history, All the wood inside (there is a lot of it) looks burnished, worn, aged; but not in the worn-out or broke-down way. The place has character. OK, there are some tacky aspects, like signs for the karaoke DJ who does weddings and divorces, and the cheap decorations provided by the local beer distributor but still there is some charm. The selection of tap handles is decent, which matters a lot to me. I want a good beer with my lunch. I went with the Harmon IPA and wasn't disappointed. My wife got the hamburger and fries. The fries were great, the burger unremarkable. They have about half a dozen different hamburgers listed on the menu, but unless you think that doing things like adding a slice of tomato makes it an entirely new kind of hamburger, they really have only two different hamburgers. I got the hot roast beef sandwich. It was truly amazing. IMHO, the hot roast beef sandwich is one of those epic bits of roadside Americana that must be savored when you find a good example. I figured this was the just sort of place to get it right, and wow did I call it! The sandwich was amazing. Tons of tender roast beef, covered with plenty of some pretty fabulous gravy and laying on a bed of toasted bread with gravy-covered mashed potatoes on the side. Yum. Double YUM. Possibly the best hot roast beef sandwich I've ever had. Service was good, but not fantastic. Cleanliness was hit and miss. Plates, flatware, glasses and table tops looked clean, and believe me, I double checked after seeing the mess under my table. Looks like the place hadn't seen a mop yet this month. If you are staying in Ashford...and happened to stay and watch the sunset at Rainier, please remember this: eat before you leave...or pack literally ANYTHING else to eat afterwards...otherwise, you will have no choice but to enter: THE HIGHLANDER ZONE. Gawd DAMNIT DO NOT ENTER THE HIGHLANDER ZONE!!! I like dive bars...this falls firmly in that category. The only thing missing was stuffed animal carcasses...but someone brought a stuffed raccoon in, literally while we sat there. What I'm trying to say is, they may have some now. It's a full dive. We had to seat ourselves as all 4 employees seemed very busy trying to make 2 salads...Leather Face from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was in the back slapping some kind of powder on something or another. We were the farthest thing from their minds. We wanted a booth, that meant we had to bus it ourselves...it appears they are operating under the new practice of: "if we don't bus ANY tables, nobody can ever eat here." Each table looked like it might hold clues to solve a murder...spilt drinks, oddly placed cutlery, flies, sticky looking things, husks from baked potatoes past, and glasses filled with just liquids. This was a clue to the fact, Nobody had been given any refills...and all the ice in all the cups had melted. After 20 minutes of sitting and twiddling our thumbs, I went to get us some menus...the lady gave me one, and informed me we could only order appetizers. Well, the starving can't be choosy. We sat to the task of exploring our one available column of menu items. Popcorn shrimp, clam strips, and chicken strips...all with fries. That's what our party of three decided on. We just needed to place that order. It appeared many of the other tables that were there to eat were all in some various stage of grief coping. One group was perplexed with what their order actually was ...one group seemed sick of drinking beer to pass time until their food arrived...one poor guy just had his head down, given up hope on finding what he sought from Highlander. It didn't bode well for us to get our food. We still had to order it. Once looking at photos of old pirate loggers got dull...we opted to surf the web...maybe laugh at some Yelp reviews of this place...perhaps, this was a one off...and Highlander was a 5-star establishment in the midst of a very bad, no good, terrible day. We were willing to give their online reputation a chance to save them. Well, we tried to login to the wifi. The password was CCREVIVAL, because,OF COURSE IT IS. There's been far too many 'Down on the Corner' sing alongs in this place, I'm sure of it! Turns out. Their wifi doesn't work. Maybe they forgot to pay the bill...or maybe they saw their shit ass Yelp reviews and wisely made sure nobody could read them before forking over far too much of their hard earned cash. 15 minutes later. Our order was taken. We've only wasted about 40 minutes of our lives! Water and drinks came out shortly after...water did taste like old ice tea...faintly. But it was cold. 20 minutes later little red baskets of food began to pile on the shelf. We were excited...I began to think "well...these other people might just be here enjoying coool frosty beverages on a Wednesday night. NOT waiting for food!" Nope They were still waiting for THEIR food...as I had originally suspected. Our food might not even be delivered yet from the factory! BUT, to be fair, Leather Face might be individually breading each delicate morsel by hand...that takes love AND time. Clam strips are TINY! 20 minutes later...food. One hour into our adventure. Having ordered popcorn shrimp and clam strips we hoped for cocktail sauce. None to be had. What I got instead was a mystery sauce that tasted like someone had rubbed a dill sprig on some athletes foot. I went back up to the bar and asked for some horseradish, and lemon. Which they had. I took that back to my self-bused booth and combined them with some black pepper and ketchup and made MY OWN DAMN COCKTAIL SAUCE! Yes, I prepared part of my own meal at a restaurant. In addition to busing my table, seating myself, bringing me my menu, and getting my bill when the time came. Don't worry, I tipped myself as well. It was the least I could do. The food was average...it was not lovingly hand made by a deranged saw murderer. It was some store bought appetizers dropped in hot oil for 3-5 then chucked in a red basket with some fries that had been cooked with experimental time durations. Mine...over done. My sons'...oily and soggy. Our friends' fries...JUST right (or so he said...but to be fair, he was really tired and probably not thinking straight). All in all..Jesus came back two times during our stay...saw meals weren't being delivered in a timely fashion and decided, "screw it. I'm going home". Never come here. Drive up and down the road until you hit something. Eat that..it'll be faster and slightly more delicious. read more
