Lomo Saltado (Yum!) | IG @moniquedao

I've always had Lomo Saltado at Asian restaurants, so I figured trying it at an actual Peruvian spot would give me the "real deal." The flavor was definitely different from what I'm used to. Typically I expect the steak to lean a little sweet, but here it was more on the salty, savory side. I'm guessing that's the more authentic version? Either way, the dish was enjoyable overall, though I do wish the fries were crispier to balance everything out. We also tried the Causa Rellena, mainly because it looked pretty, like a giant macaron ice cream. Lol. But it wasn't really for me. The texture and flavor reminded me of eating potato salad topped with thick mashed potatoes, which just wasn't my thing. Still, it was an interesting experience trying traditional Peruvian dishes, and I'm glad I finally gave this place a shot.

By far the best Lomo Saltado I've ever had. Been obsessed ever since. 10/10 portions, flavor, options, vibes, staff, etc. Great spot, hope they continue to succeed!

Highly recommend! Small hole in the wall but super authentic and very clean! The food tasted amazing and the service was friendly and fast! We had the Camarones Saltado, and Pollo a La Brasa combo with fried rice! It was so flavorful! We took our kids and they enjoyed everything. Plates are large enough to share. Their green salsa was so good and of course we had Inka Cola! Would definitely return and recommend!

Loved our experience! Such a great local spot. The food is packed with flavor and everything tasted so fresh. The cashier/server made us feel welcomed from the start and was super attentive, checking in when we needed extra utensils, napkins, or were ready to order more. Great service really makes a difference. Definitely coming back!

So I've come by Higo Chicken a lot more these days since my coworkers recommended this place and placed an order for me. I wish I could pronounce the things I order from them but my pronunciation is way off and got myself into a bind when the owner thought I wanted two orders of the TALLARIN A LA HUANCAINA 1/2 POLLO but instead I really wanted one order with two dark meats. He was kind of him to not hold me to the second order. I did order the Lomo Saltada with beef and I wanted that cooked medium rare but when I got home it was cooked medium well but it still tasted good and ate it all. I'll have to learn how to order from my coworker next time. There is seating inside this small restaurant but I opt to take out each time. Overall they are a friendly bunch of workers. Parking is sufficient for this tiny place and you can park out on the street if needed.

Togo Tallarin Verde ( vegetarian style ) so much was given . For the price of one ! I ate this dish twice .

OMG ! I tried this for the very first time on Tuesday ! Oh my ! Such amazing taste in the cuisine. The flavors are so delicious and the dish looks very appealing. I definitely recommend trying this hole on the wall. It was recommended and the food didn't disappoint. I had the Tallarin Verde ( with no chicken ) Great vegetarian option . The customer service was good . I will come again soon to try more options on the menu.

This place is so great from the amazing employees to the great flavorful food! They are super welcoming to you when you first walk in and thur out your whole visit. My wife's favorite dish from here is their lomo saltado. They use great quality ingredients and meat. I love their arroz chaufa con pollo a la brasa. The chicken is cooked to perfection and not dry. This place is our go to place for our favorite Peruvian restaurant

The food was good, very good flavors and good portion size dishes. Service was great, fast and very friendly, our waiter was awesome and they were even going to make me a special plate they did not have on the menu if i wanted to wait 20 min , i thanked them it declined. Aji was delicious and the rotisserie chicken was very good. I had the tallarin and it's a thinner noodle than other Peruvian places but good. The ceviche was awesome, and the fish didn't even taste like fish, it melted as you ate. It's a smaller restaurant, very simple and clean and they have a tv with the games playing as well, you're either eating, watching some tv or listening to the awesome bachata they play. Parking is also Tight, very few spots so you may have to park on the side street next to the restaurant.

Bomb.com! Is the sum of this restaurant's quality. This place is a true hole-in-the-wall gem that you only hear about through word of mouth. We've been here twice already, and it has never disappointed. I love the Peruvian seafood ceviche--the seafood is incredibly fresh, the corn is perfectly cooked (not too soft), and the seasoning is just right, without being overly sour. I also got to try their Lomo Saltado, and it's one of the best I've ever had! My boyfriend is Peruvian, and he approves of this place. They use a wok to impart a wonderful smokiness to the beef, and even the onions are perfectly sautéed.

Food: 4* Service: 5* Ambiance: 3* Located in a small strip mall off Whittier blvd, this place serves good Peruvian fare. I ordered papas la huancaina (boiled potatoes covered in a creamy sauce) and lomo saltado (beef salted with French fries, onions, tomatoes). Both were really good. The service was excellent, friendly and attentive

Came back and again impressed by their food. The servers are sooooo nice! They are also always checking and we're so kind. The food is well flavored and great Peruvian for the area. I'd argue better than Mario's and LA institution for Peruvian.

Best Peruvian food I've had in California so far. It really reminded me of my time in Peru. I ordered the arroz verde con pollo and it tasted exactly how I imagined with the soft boiled potato and green sauce the restaurant provides on the side. I can't wait to come back and try some of their other dishes next time.

Whats the best time to pick up a fresh chicken for dinner?

I would personally get there around 4p, but we eat early, so I guess it's whatever time your family eats. Anytime is a good time for Higo!

    Do you still offer catering?

Yes, We do, please call us

Are you Going to be open Christmas Eve?

We will be open from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm, but please try to place your order before, thank you

Are they open for indoor dining?

    Yes

Are the rice and beans vegetarian? The tallarín?

    I think so.

    Are they closed?

They better not be! 😆 I went last week, so I don't think so.

    Do they offer catering?

Yes they do. They even teach sushi in Northgate market.

I would describe this place as that saying "Jack of all trades, master of none". I came with a group and we all ordered a variety of dishes, yet nothing stuck out. For a small space they have 1 waitress who needs better skills, she may be new. I say this because even as she brought out dishes she brought things out in pieces (got my shrimp cocktail, then had to ask for crackers, then had to ask for lemon, then had to ask for salt and pepper). Some points for the food: Talllarin - chicken was dry, pasta good Bandeja paisa - 7/10 arepa dry, no beef or beans Shrimp cocktail - very little shrimp, little to no juice, like a salsa mix in the cocktail Gyoza - good can't mess that up Lomo - eh fries came warm not hot, doesn't look like a traditional sauce The good things about this place: Good little green salsa and they served a good chicha de mora. It was dark, empty, and not very welcoming from the outside. My wife and son were ready to go somewhere else, but I was determined to find some good ceviche and try Peruvian food. We walked a little farther and found another door with an "OPEN" sign, went inside, and sure enough--they were open. The food ended up being the reason I'm glad we stayed. I ordered the fish ceviche ($20.95), and it was really, really good. The fish tasted fresh and high quality, with nice-sized chunks and plenty of lime--which I personally love. The onions were great, and the potato on the side was surprisingly good. I actually wish they had given me a little more of it. The crunchy Peruvian corn was a nice addition, and even the little pieces of plantain were good, and I'm normally not a plantain person. My wife had the shrimp ceviche ($22.95). The shrimp were whole and tasted fresh, and the pickled onions were really good. It was definitely very lime-forward. She felt it could have used another ingredient or two, maybe something like cucumber, although that may just be because she's more accustomed to Mexican-style ceviche. For the price, she also expected a little more on the plate, but overall she thought it was very good. Our son had a chicken plate with a thin, well-seasoned chicken cutlet, egg, fries and white rice. He loved it and gave it a 10/10. Even the complimentary toasted bread was excellent--warm enough that we finished the whole basket. The biggest thing holding this place back is the service and overall atmosphere. The lady helping us was very nice, but the experience just felt a little strange and slow. We were literally the only people dining in the restaurant, aside from someone who came in to pick up an order, and it still took around 40 minutes to receive our food. With a toddler, that's a long time to wait. We also ordered Modelos with lime and salted rims. Mine was fine, but my wife's beer was warm and she ended up asking for ice. That said, it looks like a small, possibly family-run operation with only a few people working, and the food definitely tasted freshly prepared. So I can appreciate that good ceviche isn't necessarily coming out of the kitchen in five minutes. Overall, we WILL be back because the food was genuinely good. I just think they could have something really special here if they improved the service, made the restaurant look more obviously open and welcoming from outside, improve the vibe and tightened up the wait times. Fix those things and this could be a really nice little hidden gem in Uptown. The ceviche alone is worth coming back for.
