I've always had Lomo Saltado at Asian restaurants, so I figured trying it at an actual Peruvian spot would give me the "real deal." The flavor was definitely different from what I'm used to. Typically I expect the steak to lean a little sweet, but here it was more on the salty, savory side. I'm guessing that's the more authentic version? Either way, the dish was enjoyable overall, though I do wish the fries were crispier to balance everything out. We also tried the Causa Rellena, mainly because it looked pretty, like a giant macaron ice cream. Lol. But it wasn't really for me. The texture and flavor reminded me of eating potato salad topped with thick mashed potatoes, which just wasn't my thing. So I've come by Higo Chicken a lot more these days since my coworkers recommended this place and placed an order for me. I wish I could pronounce the things I order from them but my pronunciation is way off and got myself into a bind when the owner thought I wanted two orders of the TALLARIN A LA HUANCAINA 1/2 POLLO but instead I really wanted one order with two dark meats. He was kind of him to not hold me to the second order. I did order the Lomo Saltada with beef and I wanted that cooked medium rare but when I got home it was cooked medium well but it still tasted good and ate it all. I'll have to learn how to order from my coworker next time. There is seating inside this small restaurant but I opt to take out each time. Overall they are a friendly bunch of workers. Service was great, fast and very friendly, our waiter was awesome and they were even going to make me a special plate they did not have on the menu if i wanted to wait 20 min , i thanked them it declined. Aji was delicious and the rotisserie chicken was very good. I had the tallarin and it's a thinner noodle than other Peruvian places but good. The ceviche was awesome, and the fish didn't even taste like fish, it melted as you ate. It's a smaller restaurant, very simple and clean and they have a tv with the games playing as well, you're either eating, watching some tv or listening to the awesome bachata they play. Bomb.com! Is the sum of this restaurant's quality. This place is a true hole-in-the-wall gem that you only hear about through word of mouth. We've been here twice already, and it has never disappointed. You'll find this fantastic restaurant nestled in the far corner of a tiny plaza on 722 E Whittier Blvd. The inside of Higo Chicken holds a handful of tables in a welcoming, simple, pastel colored interior. Equally as pleasant has been the greeting and service of the staff during my visits. FOOD: True to its name, their rotisserie chicken is a headliner on the menu. The chicken skin is beautifully roasted which gives it a bit of smokiness to accent the enticing medley of seasoning. The meat is wonderfully succulent as well. Drizzle on their aji verde sauce (cilantro, garlic, lime, chilies, etc.) to enhance the chicken with a zesty, aromatic heat. You can get a whole, half, or quarter size with a side of your choice. I got their Tallarin Verde con Pollo a la Brasa ($14) - it comes with a quarter chicken piece and a spaghetti with cheese, basil sauce, and spinach. I'm hungry just recalling about it. I appreciate it came with a complimentary Papa a la Huancaina - potato with a spicy cheese sauce. Higo Chicken is one of the spots in my rotation of restaurants. Chicken is in their name. It is the item I always order. I always get their half rotisserie chicken (pollo a la brassa) with chaufa. I would order some of their other items, but, my wife won't let me. Their chicken is always nicely marinated and cooked perfectly. It is not too salty like at other places that I've been too. Higo is the place that introduced me to chaufa, or Peruvian fried rice. It's a little different from the Chinese fried rice that I am used to. Their chaufa is basically an egg fried rice with green onions and bell peppers. Their chaufa, along with their chicken makes for a great meal. Service has always been good. The parking lot is very small, and occasionally is full because of the bar a few doors down. I like it and will continue to come back. read more

For my better half and I plus our little guy we ordered: ***Ceviche de Pescado: This was fish marinaded to perfection served with cooked sweet potato slices and hominy. The only bummer was it had a whole lot of french fries and not a lot of chicken. ***Side salad: This was surprisingly delightful and I would 100% order again. it was fresh and whatever the dressing was is so yummy. ***Plantains: These were the perfect fried and sweet treat. We also got to try the Yucca a la Huancaina which is fried yucca with a side of cheese sauce. This was good but I don't think I'd get it again. The green sauce that they bring to the table deserves it's own paragraph. Man, that is so good. If you don't know why it's so good, please don't ask. This looked really interesting and it met expectations! The chicken is very good quality, more than flavorful enough, juicy, not dry at all. Personally I like normal noodles over the pesto/green ones. Green noodles I've had in asian cuisine and it doesn't really prove to be necessarily better although I do think a lot of people will like it. It is a contrast with the chicken. The potato covered in yellow sauce doesn't taste like anything Have authentic drink options as well, not my thing since I'm not a soda or drink person of ANY sort (I'm really odd). One is cinnamon/sugary and it's quite novel. Other two people enjoyed their dishes thoroughly. Menu is simple mostly chicken with some beef and fish. HEAVENLY HIGO ~~~ This place blew my expectation(s) out of the water! The place/ambiance is not too fancy, but it was HEARTWARMING in terms of both the food and the service. For my dish, I ordered the LOMO SALTADO! Even though the fries were a bit soggier than I would have liked, they were drenched in extreme flavor. Out of anything, the marinated sirloin steak was definitely the STAR of the show being tender and juicy! Lastly, the freshly grilled vegetables brought a great addition to the mix. I almost wish there were even more vegetables because they were to die for! The part that made the experience even more enjoyable was the service. The grill taste that they get on their beef and chicken saltado dishes is the best. I love this place. I'm a little picky on Peruvian food. I like Mario's and don Felix out in Hollywood and Mamita's in Glendale/Burbank area (a little different taste more like fajitas but good too). However, I haven't eaten at any of those places in a very long time, but at least in the past Higo's is on par with these other Peruvian restaurants. My now go-to for saltado.
