If you want grilled chicken, you need to specifically ask for it, or you'll likely get something that looks boiled or just oily. Customer service was average--not rude, but not particularly organized. Had to keep going back several times for basic silverware and forgot side dishes. We called and made a reservation for a group of 8 for a Sunday evening. This was our last evening of our vacation and by far the best service we had at any restaurant while in Puerto Rico. Our server was very attentive and she didn't miss anything with our order for our larger party! I'm not a huge margarita fan but decided to try one since they had so many options to choose from. I had a kiwi frosty margarita. It wasn't really for me though and I didn't taste any kiwi. It seemed like the rest of our group really enjoyed their margaritas. One person in our group ordered a coconut margarita and I tasted that one and really liked it! The chicken tostadas were good, but nothing too special. I wish they had more sour cream on them. His first bites he said were good but of course the longer it sat the more soggy -my enchiladas were fine.. nothing too special- i would say the pickled onions were a nice touch! I was under the impression that mofongo was native to PR so I assumed everywhere would make it well and I was craving it so I figured why not? Well, let's just say this was not the right place to eat this dish. The plantains were literally still formed and hard as hell. I had to cut into it with a knife which is unusual. This was like eating broken up tostones and it didn't have any flavor or sauce to accompany it. I had to ask for sauce so it could be edible. We visited Hijole twice during our 8-day stay, and both times were fantastic. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, with colorful decor and friendly service especially our waitress both times (Larissa) that sets the tone for a great meal. The tacos are packed with flavor and made with fresh ingredients--simple, satisfying, and delicious. You can tell they put care into every bite. And the strawberry margaritas? Super refreshing. My friend and I came here only because it was across the street from our hotel and only had a little over an hour until we need to leave for our tour... so we decided to come here, as soon as we looked at the menu, we should've left there weren't that many options that actually looked good from the pictures. Chips and salsa, which was so hot and unbearable. And i normally spice well as I eat a lot of salsa and other spicy food. So then the waitress brought out a green salsa, but it was so sweet and did not pair well with the chips. Service- 2/10, Food experience- 4/10. My friend and I are visiting and decided to pop in and have lunch. No one greeted us upon arrival, the waiter just pointed to a table. Once seated it took roughly 20 mins for them to grab our order and drinks, then another 30 mins for the food to be prepared. The food comes out and is missing a few items we asked for, it took another 10 mins for the remainder of our food to reach the table. The food itself was decent at best. I had the 3 tacos (cantina, 2 chorizo). The cantina was way too sweet and the chorizo resembled pepperoni which I wasn't expecting. My friend ordered the enchiladas and to my understanding they weren't the best flavor wise. Maybe we chose the wrong items or maybe the food wasn't great. We were interested in having really good Mexican Food and Google gave us a list to choose from. We arrived, we're disappointed at the minute parking space but quickly set that aside, due in large part to the charm of the bi-lingual young man who assured us he would not only keep an eye in the car but move it should it become necessary. The young lady at the front took our names and told us the wait was currently 50 minutes. We frowned and gave her a name and decided to take in some evening air while we waited. We were called within 25 minutes. We ordered the appetizers came quickly they were delicious as were the drinks. The main course was delightful and succulent. The plates were generous and beautifully presented. We had a wonderful meal topped off by a simply decadent coconut flan. The waiters were friendly and attentive with a desire to meet our needs and cocked back to make sure we had what we needed. The decor at Hijole is hip, cool modern and inviting. Music is set just so with large screen televisions should you choose to watch. Bathrooms are spotless. The service, attention to detail, the meal and the drinks were terrific. I strongly recommend this restaurant! Incidentally one of the owners/partners were on hand and we took the time to say hello and compliment him on a lovely meal. read more
