This is the second time my hubby and I have stopped at Hillside Hotel. First was during Covid for lunch. It looked so cute and we knew it would have a fabulous view (and the food was wonderful). We decided to come back to spend a relaxing afternoon, dinner, and an overnight getaway. We hoped to experience the pool, but instead had a lovely time under their back porch watching the rain clouds all around us. We had an exceptional dinner (ribeye for him, salmon for me) with fantastic sides and super tasty adult bevs. Finished the dinner off with crunch warm churros and a couple games of shuffleboard. Our room was large and comfy, with a small couch and nice back porch. We will be back! After a busy summer we decided to leave the city and get away for a night. We normally travel north this time we decide to explore the areas to our south. We discovered a great staycation spot - The Hillside Boutique Hotel in Castroville, Texas, minutes drive from San Antonio. The hotel was incredible, every room looking over the beautiful Medina River Valley from a semi private veranda or balcony. From the moment we started the reservation process until we left the next day the staff was very nice, accommodating and extremely knowledgable. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. This is an older boutique hotel that has been remodeled. We used it for a group retreat, and it was excellent. The rooms were very well appointed, very comfortable and large. The service and staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool area was very nice. We will absolutely return here again, and I would recommend it to anybody looking for a little getaway. read more

Views are gorgeous. Rooms are massive. The decor is lovely. There was only a sheet on the bed though. The rooms are kind of jiving with the I've put lipstick on a pig theme. Mildew in the bathroom, heater would never kick on, bathroom sounded like there was a freight train in it the whole time even with nothing on. Woke up to a tree stump being dug out outside the window. That being said, between here and Hondo definitely the nicest spot to stay! The lady at check in was super friendly, too. read more

We had a wonderful stay for our wedding anniversary. We booked the one-night escape package which was a great deal. Room, late check out, breakfast, welcome drink and $50 restaurant credit included. The rooms were spotless and very nicely decorated. All staff we encountered were very welcoming and accommodating. Book yourself a spa session. The spa staff are great! When we returned to our room we found two glasses of champagne and home baked cookies with a note from the spa staff (It came up during our spa session that it was our anniversary)....a really sweet, personal touch to our stay! I stayed at this hotel in December of last year and it was horrible. I had woken up with bug bites on my ankle which I reported to them via email - I was told that the maintenance team checked and didn't find anything. A few months later after having bug bites almost every night I discovered a bed bug infestation in my home. I haven't traveled anywhere since then and it's taken me months and $3500 to fix the problem they probably knew they had. After getting an official confirmation in March that I had bed bugs, I emailed the operations manager Aurelio and asked for the official report stating they had no bed bugs and was met with silence. I stayed in room 105 and the suite for a wedding, so watch out. Besides the money, this experience has costed me months of sleep and mental peace. I paid 220 for the trauma! Besides the bed bugs - the hotel is horribly kept. It's so dirty and the shower even had the previous persons hair. It's really just an expensive motel next to a dirty road. I'm sorry it's taken me months to warn others, I haven't had a night of peace in months. read more

My husband sent me a screen shot to this hotel and automatically I wanted to book it! I was excited and hoped it would be all the pictures appeared to be! We were greeted with little information being it was our first time but I was okay with it. I asked questions that helped answer my own questions which consisted of what time the bistro was open. To my surprise the bistro was closed and the lady informed me it is closed Mondays and Tuesday's! Also, I asked what other amenities they had and she basically said they didn't. As I walked the grounds I saw they had a spa( again closed) which is fine but the lady could have mentioned the spa being an amenity at the very least. The pool was probably the nicest part because there was very little people which gave us time to soak in every minute of the pool alone!!! The room was nice our sheets were a bit stained but overall nice! The wifi did not work on any of our devices. The view from our room overlooked the hill country but could be drowned out by the 90 traffic that passes right by the hotel. I would like to experience this hotel again and possibly have a better experience! My husband shared that maybe not with out four year old being that it is not too kid friendly. We did get to relax with zero bother and in the morning for check out the staff seemed so much more friendly! read more

When we saw our room we were happy that it was so large, with nice tile floors and newly renovated bathroom. There was a closet, but not a single hanger! They provided a safe, microwave and refrigerator; however, the fruit I placed in the refrigerator froze. They did provide a coffee pot. We had a lot of trouble with our key cards, but understand they are being replaced soon. We had hoped to eat in the Hillside restaurant, but it was closed the entire time we were there. We came out for a good friend's wedding. I kept thinking "It's right off 90, how can this wedding venue be right off 90?!" Then I see the huge hill and think "That's where it has to be!" and I was right. Once you get through all the old timey stuff and Medina River on 90 you'll come up a huge hill and take a sharp right and dip into this quaint little hotel and spa they call Alsace! It's got a lot of shrubbery, plants, trees and flowers. It definitely has a perfect view for a wedding. We meet up in the lobby, the lady behind the counter was super sweet and helpful. Apparently there was one wedding happening at the facility and another wedding party staying at the facility but the wedding was off site. You could tell just driving in, this was a partying kind of wedding, so I knew we would fit right in together. I could see how this wouldn't make for a romantic weekend for a couple though. I did call ahead to confirm I could bring my dog. They quoted me over the phone $50, but once the receptionist saw our little stinker, she said he could stay for $25. I did as the reviewers suggested before me and booked the room upstairs. I'm so glad we did. Although we had to climb a small flight of stairs, the view from up there was absolutely beautiful. We did not hear any of the cars from 90 or the side street at all during our stay. Each bed had SIX Pillows- SIX! I haven't seen so many pillows on a bed since Hamption Inn, so that was super. The room was a little dated, but it was super cool and spacious. Our room had a little entry nook to put your shoes. Then a nice little mini-fridge with a bar, coffee machine and cups. The bathroom was a little dark, but it would do! There was a nice little chair near the tv and a two seat table as well. The patio outside also had two nice lounge seats. The ample furniture was two great big thumbs up. However, I could see how some people are off put from the vents and dust on hard to reach things; it could use some deep cleaning to freshen up certain areas. Keep in mind though- you are in the country, so things aren't going to be spotless or bug free 100% of the time! For the most part it was a perfect place to sleep for the night, wake up, go on the balcony with your coffee and enjoy the view. That balcony was super. The wedding was beautiful. The staff was great as well. The traffic interrupted a few of the important parts in the ceremony like right before "I do", which is something I don't think could be helped when you're outside. The newly weds seemed to be extremely happy and I know that's the most important part. After the ceremony they had the reception, which was in the main area of the facility. It was beautiful. Great views all around. It was definitely popping once the other wedding party came back to the hotel later in the evening. There was a lot of action going around the whole property, but no one got out of control. There was a band of kittens that were upsetting a lot of the dogs in my building, so I would definitely bring some cat repellent with you if you have a Dog Barker. Unfortunately, our stay was disappointing. We were anticipating a much higher end establishment. The website hyped the place as being luxurious. Not the case at all. 1- Not even close to being TX Hill Country. Surrounded by flat farmland. 2- Located on a very busy & LOUD highway. 3- Interior finishes were very dated and old. Looked as if the management thought a coat of dark blackish paint (very sloppy application: on windows, floors, etc.) would cover the wear and tear. 4- Rooms were not well kept at all and certainly not luxurious. Bathroom ceiling had mold and so much water damage! Toilet rocked on it's base. Floors were stone and freezing. No tissue in the room. 5- White bed sheets had stains on them. Disgusting find! 6- Restaurant was not open. It was hidden by heavy dark drapes that made for a dungeon atmosphere. A small space had been carved out behind the bar. Food was served in a little area that overlooked a dirt access road and trailer home. 7- WiFi did not work in the room. We had a signal at the entry door but the room no signal at all. Overall, a complete letdown. Buyer beware if you are relying on this establishment's website. We will not be returning. read more

The decorating and landscape make you feel like your far away in an exotic location. The views are amazing. AVOID THE RESTAURANT! Should have been warned off by the negative reviews, but we really wanted to eat German-type food in Castroville and this was apparently the only game in town. So we passed up the restaurant recommended by the docent at one of the little museums, and headed out here. They were obviously getting ready for a wedding later in the day and the building would, yes, be a lovely setting for a wedding. The view goes on forever, and on a sunny day like today it leaves you feeling peaceful just to look at it. That gives them one of the two stars. The other star - ukk. The lowest rating I can give for our lunch. As you arrive, you are walked past the buffet, and the server opens each of the steamtable covers (leaving them open) describing what they contain. Clearly the stuff had been there for a while -- we spent about 50 minutes on our lunch and only one table ate from the buffet during that time. Server brought a small, round loaf of soft, multigrained bread that had obviously been microwave heated. This was served with an interesting mixture of what seemed like parsley, garlic and olive oil - not quite a pesto, but tasty. Unfortunately this mixture raised my expectations. Spouse ordered Castroville sausage (Alsatian-type dry sausage), cooked to death and buried under about 1 1/2 cups of sauerkraut. It came with one tiny roasted potato, some nicely cooked but cold carrots, and a good-sized portion of tasteless, also cold, red cabbage. Do you get the idea he didn't like it? I ordered the German pork loin, a generous portion of desperately over-cooked, barely warm, pork loin so tough I had to use a steak knife. The remainder of my plate - 1 1/2 cups sauerkraut, cold carrots, cold cabbage, teeny potato -- was identical to Spouse's. Oh yes, he got a teeny cup of very good sweet-hot mustard. We were hungry, so we ate. I wanted a glass of Alsatian wine - the server had no idea, so she brought me the wine list. Sadly, they do carry one Alsatian wine but only by the bottle. I substituted a glass of German Reisling which almost made the pork loin palatable. Thank you, Spouse, for eating half my pork -- yes, I know it was to get the taste of the sausage out of your mouth, but I appreciated it all the same. read more

This looks to be an older highway motel that has been redone. It's a tad outdated, but clean none the less. All if the staff members were helpful & accommodating to any requests we had. The view is spectacular if you get a good room, the pool was decent it was clean & seemed to be well kept. Thanks to the groupon we purchased I got a massage while there which was nice, but the ladies in the spa were less than friendly. Trying to talk to one in particular was like pulling teeth, it was almost to the point of rude. One major downfall was the restaurant - it is horrible & I would not recommend it! Well, our air conditioning went out, and knowing some local places needed some help, we were willing to help them out. They seem relatively unoccupied at all times, but I suppose in the times of the 'Rona, the would be hurting. They were going to charge us more more than I could have got it on priceline. After explaining our situation. Being military, and someone having to deal with the covids first hand, and willing to spend money in their nice restaurant, they were unwilling to budge. Cool. Enjoy zero dollars as opposed to some dollars. Whoever manages/owns this place is a jackass. They would rather take a loss instead of less of a loss or breaking even. I am sure the employees will appreciate it when they don't have a job. Enjoy your empty rooms, you earned em. We just borrowed a window unit and are sleeping in one room til Monday. Haley was a fine server. The bartender went above and beyond when the wine I ordered was unavailable. I ended up with a lovely substitution, and the staff couldn't have been more gracious about it. I stayed here on the Friday before Mother's Day with My GF, her daughter, and her daughter's husband. We got two rooms. The rooms were fine, despite old plumbing fixtures. The A/C kept the room cold, and the beds were comfortable. Since I live in Castroville, I've had the opportunity to visit this place a few times to eat. The food is hit or miss. Sometimes you get a decent meal, other times it's "meh." The service is most always veeerrrrry slow. Mother's Day weekend was no exception, neither was today at lunch. The shining moment out of all the times I've been to this place to eat, and the one time I stayed in a room was this past weekend - Two weeks after our stay on Mother's Day weekend. I'd left a T-shirt I bought in Vermont in the closet of our room. I only realized it this past Saturday. So I emailed them and asked if they'd found it. They had, and it was waiting for me when I went to lunch there today! That simple bit of honesty goes a long way in my book. Thank you! read more

Terrible hotel, don't waste your time! The sound from the highway kept us up all night. We phoned reception and were offered a white noise machine (they clearly know this is an issue), 50% off that night and to be moved to a quieter room in the morning. The overnight manager had left in the morning and the unhelpful day manager said the offer was no longer valid. We cut our 2 night stay short and would highly recommend you never stay here. Parts of our room were a little outdated but not a big deal and didn't affect our stay. The bistro had good food but I feel was a little too expensive for what was served. If we're in the area again, we'll probably stay here again if only for the sake of staying in a local spot and not a chain. Horrible stay. First we get there at 4:30 they tell us they are still fixing up the room and it won't be more than ten minutes so to go relax and they will give us a call. An hour goes by and nothing (mind you check in is at four) I give them a call and the lady tells me "oh the room has been ready for awhile!" (I understand people forget but still a little annoying) then we get to my room, dead bugs on the ground, wasp invading the patio, that's fun! We stay the night and even though the internet connection kept going out and then leave the next day. Only to be charged THREE times. Now apparently they canceled two of the transactions but I will have to wait 3-5 business days to get it back on my card, and I have bills that are supposed to be coming out so guess who's going to have to pay late fees on those? Me! I understand mistakes happen but when it comes to somebodies money it's not cool to overcharge someone by over 700 dollars. DO NOT COME HERE. It's overpriced, the workers don't care and the only thing worth it is the food. read more

We recently had our son and daughter-in-law rehearsal dinner at the Bistro at the Hillside Boutique Hotel. Our event coordinator, Delaine, did a truly wonderful job. She took care of each and every concern I had. The catering manager, Joel, was also terrific. The evening of the event he was on hand to make sure all the details were covered. Chef Danny even modified our menu to make my husband happy. So my critique is not of the hotel, but of the Bistro - the Bistro gets four stars as does Joel & Delaine. read more

We decided to stay here to escape the fireworks in San Antonio. The area is beautiful and very quite even being right off the highway. As we made a reservation we requested a 2nd floor room to avoid noise above us. They booked us a room on the first floor. I requested it to be changed and they were hesitate to change it. It was eventually changed. Upon unloading our cars we noticed the rails to the stairs had splinters, the stairs are not very safe, bolts coming lose from rails, and the balcony's are very moldy. They have a huge yellow jacket and red wasp issue. We couldn't even be on the balcony they were so bad. The rooms are nice, tile floors, tv, etc. The rooms are very clean and very spacious. The refrigerator didn't work very well though. Wifi is nonexistent due to range. We were closest building to the restaurant. The property is not kept up very well around the rooms. Broken beer bottles, cigarette butts all over, and trash under each building. The original building they had us in, I believe someone lives on the lower level. The people staying there were very suspicious, their balcony was disgusting, and trash all over. These people would walk back and forth staring. It made me feel very uncomfortable. I believe that is leading to the trash under the buildings as well. Their balcony reminded me of a meth lab. Pots, pans, trash, gallon water bottles, and a water hose. Pets are allowed with a fee which is fine. The second day there we are at the pool. In front of other guests the front desk clerk ask "is anyone here in 5**" of course I say "I do" She explains that my dog is barking uncontrollably which is not normal at all. She's 13 and has traveled everywhere with us since a puppy. She explains "I have had to move people due to this" Calling me out in front of people was very embarrassing and she could've done it in private. Come to find out they have cats on their property. Our dog has been trained to chase cats off our property so that was the reason of her barking. Cats and dogs don't mesh very well. On to the restaurant after reading several reviews we decided to try it. There was one other couple eating while we were there. We ordered our food and maybe 25 mins later our food arrived. Now going off reviews I was very disappointed. My husbands food arrived 3 times incorrect. My daughters mac and cheese was definitely kraft mac and cheese. My adult grilled cheese was okay, the onion rings had no flavor, and was bland. My husband was ordering a drink and the bartender mentioned "she needed a book to make it." It was a margarita. Was not impressed and we didn't return to eat there. Please prepare yourselves that this is far from a "resort and spa" The desk clerks bring their families to the pool and in my opinion that is very unprofessional. You have guest swimming and a whole group of people from two separate desk clerks bringing their families. The pool area and venue area is very nice and my daughter really enjoyed that area. Once again the yellow jackets and wasp are insane. We will unfortunately not return and for the price you pay it is not worth it. This hotel needs a lot of updating and the restaurant needs employees who are more experienced or need to be retrained. Lastly as I was checking out a couple behind me mentioned "they were very saddened how bad the hotel has become. They mentioned it really has gone down hill and they wouldn't be returning either" In my experience I would say spend your money at a better place. This place needs a lot of work. read more

My wife and I had a wonderful time on our 4-night honeymoon stay. We ate breakfast 3 times and dinner with dessert once, and the food was delicious, especially the homemade chocolate chunk cookies! The customer service overall was great. Any issue we had was taken care of right away - we lost hot water in our room and they put us into a comparable room without delay. -We booked for 5 guest (2 adults 3 small children) for 5 nights but only the day before we arrived were we informed that if we want to have space for everyone to sleep there would be an extra $15 charge for a rollaway. That is no big deal but you could have mentioned the extra charge when we booked for 5 and we would not mention this if everything else had not been so awful. -As we planned we arrived late the first night (Thursday) the check in process was unusually long and after more then 15 minutes I was given 2 keys and directed to our room. After unloading my luggage an my sleeping children I realized the keys given to us didn't work and I needed to walk back to the front desk to get new keys. Again not a big deal but after a long flight, a long drive and with sleeping children, a nuisance. -The first morning we realized that there were not enough towels for 5 only 1 coffee cup, 2 coffees, no wifi signal and the water pressure was poor. I went the front desk and asked for the issues to be corrected. I was politely told that the towels, coffee and cups for sure would be corrected and the water pressure would be looked into. I was also told the Internet was a provider problem and it probably would not be fixed. This confused me because the problem was not the internet but the WiFi signal. In any event connecting to the WiFi was not possible at any point during our stay. -When we got back to the room the second night again our keys did not work so I again walked to the desk and got to new keys that worked. Upon entering the room we found coffee and cups but only 3 bath towels. We now, upset, called the front desk and were brought towels. -The next morning rather then go through the front desk I left a note and $10 explaining we were 5 and asking for towels. That worked for one night. Because the following day I left $5 and again only got 4 towels and no coffee. -Our last evening there, we returned to the room to find again our keys did not work and this time when I went to the front desk I was told they were aware the key was not working because the cleaning staff could not get into the room either. What! The cleaner could not get in? So you didn't clean in the room and if they could not get in you didn't try to fix it in the 8 hours we were gone? We were given keys and told to try. We got in to find the room as we left it so we told the front desk we were going to dinner at the hotel restaurant and all we need was towels as we were leaving for the airport at 5 AM the next morning. -When we returned to the room it had been made up with plenty of towels, coffee, cups and water (that was a first). This was a pleasant surprise that would have been appreciated had we not have to suffer the ten minute intrusion of 2 hotel employees in our room trying to fix the lock when all we wanted to do was shower the kids and go to bed. Fixing the lock at that point was of no value to us as we would have no need to re-enter the room at that point and the effort was just an intrusion. This beautiful hotel was made very uncomfortable by the total lack of service we received. After 5 nights and 4 meals at the restaurant I can say that the incompetence of the very polite staff was beyond frustrating. I should add that my sister in law was staying at the hotel at the same time we were and her experience was completely different. Not sure why she had a fully stocked room was texted periodically to see if she need anything and was even given complimentary drink chips at the same time we were treated like second class guests. I wrote them after we got home to explain and they had the never to say next time I come they will "take care of me". I told them I would not be returning. read more
