I was invited here by a friend because I told him I'd never had Afgan food before. I love this little place. The service and overall vibe is pleasant. I wish I need the name of the foods I tried. I honestly didn't eat anything I wouldn't feed my own kids. I feel bad eating lamb, but that ish was so good! Lol The flavors and different flavor profiles, loved! Very clean and despite my overall anxiety of that part of town, it wasn't bad. Now where near as bad as I thought it was. Def would go again & take others!

Approved by a true Afghani! My partner is from Afghanistan and has been in the U.S. for about 4 years. While passing through Houston, he was craving food from home, so I ordered from here for him and it was a hit. He got the Qabuli Palau with Lamb Shank, and it was excellent. The meat was fresh, tender, and flavorful, and the rice tasted authentic -- just like he remembers. It even came with a side salad, which added a nice crunch between bites. The portion was generous, enough for two people, though he ordered two plates and two naan so he'd have leftovers for a couple days. The naan was also really good and authentic -- soft, fresh, and perfect with the pulao. Overall, this place is solid. When an Afghan gives their stamp of approval on Kabuli Pulao (the national dish of Afghanistan) you know it's done right. If it's your first time trying Afghan food, definitely go for the Qabuli Palau with the Lamb Shank.

If you like good food, then this is the place to go! Whenever I visit Houston, my mom always wants to come here. (My mom never likes outside food so this means a lot.) Between the two of us, we enjoy trying many dishes and love the leftovers later. I have tried so many things here. The Qabuli Palau is light and refreshing with a slight sweetness from the raisins, the lamb shank is tender, and the rice is perfectly cooked. The Goat Karahi again has a delicious depth of flavors without being overly spiced. The Chapli Kababs and the Afghani Tikka Kabobs are just chef's kiss served with some delicious bread. I think anything you try here will delight your tastebuds! Make sure to try some of the tea and dessert at the end!

So pleasantly surprised by this spot on Bellaire! Nice casual place for lunch. It's very clean inside and you can order entrees or platters for 2-3 people. Tried the mixed platter for 2, which was a huge serving of rice along with 3 different meats. The rice itself was very flavorful, I loved the addition of carrots and dried fruit. Every meat was delicious in its own way, especially the lamb shank which was so tender. The mantoo (dumplings) were so unique- perfectly cooked, the filling was savory and the yogurt dressing and beans on top made for a nice flavor combination. So glad we tried these! There's self serve hot tea as well. The people who work here are very nice and food came out after about 10 minutes. Would love to come back and try other menu items!

We have been wanting to try this place and so glad we finally did! It's a gem. The food is delicious - the portions are generous - and happy to support a local business. Between the four of us we ordered and shared the mantoo (dumplings), Bulani (potato and chives pancake), and the mixed platter for 3 (beef, chicken and lamb shank). We had plenty of the platter left. Everything was full of flavor. The owner was very sweet and offered the homemade green sauce (little spicy) and yogurt to accompany the meal. Delicious! I also ordered the homemade mango drink (with pistachios)! Highly recommend. But we also enjoyed the saffron tea. Go visit and enjoy the wonderful food!

Friendly service. The server took his time telling me what was included with my choices. In the end I asked for the lamb and chicken combo with rice and an order of potato samosa. Food was hot and tasty. I normally don't like raisins with my rice but I didn't mind theirs. As someone else mentioned, they are generous with their portions Came here after a recommendation, will definitely come back again.

We shared a rice and lamb shank dish, QABULI PALAU. It was delicious and balanced. The staff were kind and the place was clean. Reasonable prices and generous portions . What more could you ask for?

This is a hidden little gem in the back of a long strip mall and definitely a place you should add to your try list. It's not fancy to look at, but I always feel comfortable coming in here, and they can easily accommodate large parties. As usual, they brought a refreshing lettuce salad. Once I finished that off I ordered the Mantu appetizer. Mantu is stuffed with a wonderful ground beef filling, a little pocket of deliciousness, a tiny spicy heat to it, and a moist sauce that rounds out the flavor, and is finished with a generous sprinkle of sumac. It's a delicious light dumpling!! My favorite dish that I keep ordering over and over is the Showra. This is a super flavorful broth in which a lamb shank sits along with a potato. It sounds so simple, and it is, but I think it's absolutely wonderful. I've never seen a naan prepared the way they do their version. Pull off pieces and dip that into the broth so that it gets all soggy and delicious :-). They serve it with a small side of onion and lemon, and I squeeze the lemon juice into it and dump the onion into the hot broth. I like to finish the meal with the light Firni milk pudding sprinkled with chopped pistachios. While eating here, you could run next-door to the market if you need some Halal meat. I think the above is my favorite meal here.

I came during lunchtime and it was completely empty but I still opted to dine in anyway, so I could get the real experience. The first booth I wanted to sit in was dirty, so I went to a different one which I eventually realized still had crumbs on it as well. I ended up placing my order and just telling her to make it to go bc I just wasn't feeling it. I ordered the lamb chops which on the menu had the full bone on it so you could easily pick it up and eat, but when I got my order, it didn't have the bone which I thought was a bit odd. In general, I feel like the rice and the lamb chops could've used more flavor. The little spicy sauce they provided helped though.

The potato-filled Bolani is the perfect steaming hot appetizer to kick off your meal. We loved the boneless chicken charsi karhai, and the palak sabzi, both served in generous portions. We paired that with chicken kofta and chunks (yeah, they call them chunks lol), which was also tasty. And oh my, we ordered a couple of pieces of garlic naan, and they were huge and oh so good! The mango lassi was the ideal drink to cool me down on a hot summer evening. We found the prices to be a genuine value, and the food was delicious. A few notes: I do wish that the food was served on china with silverware, and not on disposables, but perhaps they don't have a large enough dishwasher. Also, I wish I could have ordered a side of rice to accompany the palak sabzi and boneless chicken charsi karhai, but I didn't see that as a side order on the menu. I will ask next time, as there will definitely be a next time. I'm definitely going back. Final note: the service was super friendly and very welcoming. Be back soon!

I got the two most popular dishes, including the karahi (beef per our waiter's recommendation) and the chapli kebab with bukhari pulao. The karahi portion was better than other restaurants! I wanted more curry sauce and the beef could have been more tender, but still delicious. The sauce also had some heat to it! The garlic naan was big and tasted fresh, one of my favorite naans I've had. The chapli dish was the standout. The beef was so flavorful and I normally don't enjoy ground beef!! Highly highly recommend. Complimentary hummus which went great with the naan however nothing to write home about. Complimentary hot green tea. Drinks are self serve. Dishes are served on paper plates and there are styrofoam plates to eat individually. I do wish they used glass dishware. Service was amazing. The staff were very friendly and checked up on us throughout the entire meal. I even heard them customizing a patron's order who wanted to try a little bit of lamp chop in addition to his lamb kofta which I found very generous. Restroom was very clean! Overall, delicious, fairly priced Afghan food. Highly recommend.

I was in line to order to-go but the lady in front of me had the hardest time paying for her order. I found that to be extremely considerate of the worker to think to do that. Food came out in about 15 minutes. I was so hungry I ended up deciding to eat in my car. A little disappointed that they didn't include any utensils (nor did they ask if needed any), but thankfully I had some extras in my car. I ordered a chicken kebab and they were nice enough to sub my rice for a salad without extra charge. Also ordered the borani bademjan because I'm a fan of all things eggplant. Everything was delicious. The chicken kebab was juicy, moist, and nicely seasoned. However, my favorite item was hands down the borani bademjan. It had large pieces of smoky grilled eggplants and I love the spiced tomato flavors. Yum! Highly recommend for all eggplant fanatics. The borani came with a piece of nan that was good as well. It's the kind of spot that works just as well for a casual dinner as it does for a relaxed night out with friends or family. We started off with the lentil soup, which was comforting and flavorful--light yet satisfying, with a nice balance of spices. The hummus was smooth, creamy, and elevated even more by the complimentary fresh bread, which came out warm and perfectly baked--easily one of the highlights of the meal. For mains, the Koobideh Combination stole the show. The kababs were juicy, well-seasoned, and cooked perfectly, with that classic smoky flavor that makes Persian kabobs so good. Definitely the standout dish and a must-order. The Salmon & Chicken combo was equally impressive--both proteins were tender, nicely grilled, and paired beautifully with the saffron rice and grilled vegetables, giving you a great mix of flavors and textures. We also tried the Soujuk & Cheese Lahmajun, which added a nice twist to the meal. It had a crispy base with rich, savory toppings, and the cheese brought everything together really well--great for sharing. Avesta is a solid go-to for Persian cuisine in Houston.
