Ordered take out from Himalayan House Restaurant on a recent trip to the San Diego area. Garlic cilantro naan - Finally, a garlic naan with real flavor! Unlike the many others that I've tried in the past that barely hint at garlic, this one was wonderfully garlicky. Just look at the visible pieces of actual garlic in my photo. Saag tofu - Saag tofu is an unusual and welcome option--it's typically saag paneer, a cheese I tend to avoid. They provided a very generous portion, and it paired perfectly with the included basmati rice and the garlicky naan. The Chicken Tikka Tandoori was outstanding! The chicken was flavorful, perfectly charred, and moist, and the portion size was massive. It filled up the entire togo container. Mango Lassi is our standard order, and this one was a winner! It had a wonderful, fresh taste, clearly made in-house rather than poured from a jug or premade. All the food was packed securely, neat, and included utensils for us. read more

Family dinner but they didn't want to do family style. Personally, this is a perfect place for family style. Lots of items ordered but pics are of the garlic cilantro naan, sweet naan, goat curry, chai, and mulligatawny soup. They also give you a cup of lentil soup with each main dish. The lentil soup was tasty but on a bit of the watery side. The mulligatawny soup, chicken and lentils, was delicious. I just wish they didn't use precooked chicken from the tandoor oven. The savory naan could've used just a tad more time in the oven. What surprised me was the sweet naan. It made for a nice dessert too at the end of the meal. My hubby put some raita on it and liked that combo. Their chicken monos were nicely seasoned and juicy. They give you some Himalayan sauce to go with it, gave it a nice little tang. My hubby's goat curry was medium spicy and it had a good little kick. The only thing about goat is you are contending with lots of bones. It was a cool evening so I was excited to have their chai. Ok, I've ordered from Himalayan House Restaurant for a long, long time and I've procrastinated on posting a review because I selfishly wanted to keep this secret for myself. Staff have always been helpful and quick with fulfilling orders. The food is stellar. We typically order their chicken tikka masala, butter chicken and lamb tandoori entrees. All of these dishes are always perfectly cooked, savory, saucy and palatable. You have the option to specify the heat level on the entrees, using a scale of 1 - 10. Be warned, ordering a dish 10/10 heat will cause your nose to run, your lips to burn and mouth to tingle. It hurts so good! Of course, we also order their naan bread to slop up all the sauce. Their kheer (rice pudding) is the perfect dessert to end an amazing meal. It's normally served warm and it's just a tad sweet. My only complaint is that I wish they gave you more kheer per order. The food here has rich flavor & spices come on your palate. I love the Vegetable Samosa stuffed with chick peas and spices also. Himalayan House Restaurant looks and acts like a small kitchen, including the teenager who doesn't care about his looks, nor his attitude towards customers. He was unfriendly and rude, luckily another guy step in at times but at the end, he also appeared lackluster. As for the food, I've had better...much better. The Paneer Pakora is supposed to be deep fried but this wasn't even close and the taste was forgetful. The Chicken Chhoila was something unique but again forgetful...and both dishes looked unappealing and slapped together. The Lamb Tikka Masala was simple and basic (not good) while the Mushroom Tikka Masala was decent. The waitress let us know ahead of time that there would be a 12 minute wait time on the dumplings (Momo) which was fine especially because the other dishes came out so quickly. The food came out with a lovely surprise appetizer, a cup of lentil soup for each of us. The soup was amazing.... Subtle with cumin seed and a refreshing lightness. The Pakora was crispy and packed with veggies. The curry was thick and rich filled with all kinds of deliciousness ( shrimp, chicken, mutton, paneeer, cauliflower, broccoli, peas, carrots and mushrooms)....... I know it sounds like these things might not all belong together but trust me they do! The Momo strangely reminded me of a cross between mandoo and xiao long bao with an Indian twist. It was good, but not my favorite. The Rita was fresh and delicious. The 911 sauce was as hot as they implied and super yummy. My son loved the Mango Lassi. The server was attentive but didn't hover. I hate leaving negative reviews, but the food was so expensive and disappointing. We saw the high ratings on Yelp and ordered on UberEats...I would have returned the food had we eaten in person. Everything tasted like cream without any sort of spices or salt. Even the filling in the samosas tasted buttery mashed potatoes (which I love, but not when I'm ordering Indian food.) We literally put cumin, curry powder and salt on the expensive food to make it taste decent. They also forgot the mango lassi, which I would have overlooked if the food had been good. I'm very confused whether they just rushed the order or have a new cook. There's no way a restaurant can have this high rating with this quality of food. I hope the cooks and owner see this and do something to make this right. read more
