How can you hear the name Himalayan Wild Yak and not be curious?  How can you enter the restaurant and gaze upon the big stuffed yak diorama or the big painting of the yak and not smile?  This cheer will continue through your meal.  We found the service to be very helpful and the space to be airy and not too loud (thank you very high ceilings!)  There are a lot of really tasty appetizers to choose from and this is often how we put together a meal.  This time we had the samosa chat (our favorite), the crispy pork belly (really nice and crispy as advertised), chow mein noodles (also really good), momos (yum) and the wild boar (which was a little tough and probably our least favorite.)  For an entrée we all shared the rogan josh which was also very good.  I can't forget to mention the bread/donuts that they placed on the table when we arrived.  Fried and delicious - what is not to like?!  All in all, we really enjoyed our dinner and would be happy to come back.  The tables are comfortable and far enough apart and there is plenty of parking. read more

It's quite the trek to get out to Himalayan Wild Yak (HWY), so you better believe I wanted it to be worth it. Was the food good? For sure. Was it out of this world? Probably not. Is it worth the trek if you don't live nearby? Maybe. We had a plentiful party of folks ready to indulge in the finest Himalayan and Nepalese food. I think the consensus among our group of "foodies" (or what I like to call, food connoisseurs) was that the appetizers were more unique and interesting than the main course entrees. We tried about 9 different appetizers and some standouts were the following: - Crispy Pork Belly - Sukuti Sadheko (crispy goat meat) - Clay Ovean Roasted Pork - Goat Bhutan - Momo (Pork, Buffalo, Yak) It may be controversial to say, but the grilled yak to me was just alright. It was cooked to the right temperature (not too tough, pink on the inside), but didn't quite have the mouthful feeling that beef has. Nevertheless, I'd order it again just to say I had some yak that night. The sauce it comes with does pair well with the grilled yak. The momos - another popular Himalayan/Nepalese type dish were just dandy and the sauce also paired well. However, I can't say that they were any better than some of the other Nepalese places in the NoVA/DC area. As for the main courses, they are more standard dishes - curries and other sauced of dishes that you'll find at other Indian and Nepalese restaurants. They are notably smaller than I expected. But in any case, you'll want to get some naan to later up all them savory flavors. For the main entrees, what you see (read) is what you get. Nothing too surprising, so it's safe to order what you know them to be. TL;DR: Wonderful restaurant out in the boonies of Brambleton. A nice gem for being out west, however if you live quite far I'm sure there may be just as good Nepalese restaurants closer. However, their appetizers really shine in terms of tastiness and uniqueness. In fact, I might even go as far to just recommend dining on appetizers and maybe ordering only one main course (they are also on the slightly smaller side, despite the higher prices). read more

Himalayan Wild Yak had great reviews and is a newer restaurant in the area, so it was fun to try something new. The food was really good. Starting the complimentary bread, it was a taste and texture combination that I've never had before. It was to try something new. We only got appetizers, and my favorite by far was the vegetable Momos. Each small mono packed a big punch of flavor. They were served with a really nice sauce as well. I thought the samosa chaat and chowmein were fine dishes, but they weren't anything spectacular or uniquely better than other chaats or noodle dishes in the area. The service was very quick, and all staff members courteous. The restaurant itself is really well done inside, it has a cool vibe starting with the taxidermied yak at the front of the restaurant that's a good photo op spot. Price wise, I thought everything seemed reasonably priced compared to other restaurants in the area. Overall, I'd definitely come back and try other dishes read more

I was first exposed to the cuisine of Nepal in 2017 when we first ate at Royal Nepal. It was a great experience. Now, two of the three original owners of Royal Nepal have moved on to open a new location in Ashburn, VA. Result: Roadtrip! It was great to see Dip and Touk again, the two owners and we were certainly not disappointed by the new location. While its an hour's drive for us, it was worth the trip. My wife and I tasted a variety of great food including the pork belly appetizer, chicken sekuwa and of course our all-time favorite the Yak Momos. I had the Lamb Saag and my partner had the Spicy Pork Curry. We thoroughly enjoyed every dish set before us. This was a great meal, that far exceeded our expectations. We'll continue to stop by Royal Nepal, but have no doubt this location will remain on our list of great places to eat whenever we are in the area, or just feel like a little drive. What an awesome restaurant to try out! There aren't many Nepalese restaurants around the area so it was great being able to come here in the shopping center. The servers were all friendly which I appreciated. They give a complimentary bowl of fried dough and pickled radish at the beginning. My favorite dishes were the chicken sekuwa and butter chicken with garlic naan. Every dish is a generous portion and super flavorful with different spices. All of the meat is cooked well and I love how unique this place is offering yak. The pork belly was recommended to us by one of the servers and it had a delicious sweet flavor to it and a soft chewy texture. The one item we weren't the biggest fan of was the yak rice because it was pretty dry in our mouths, but I guess that's how it's supposed to be like coming out of a steaming hot stone pot. I am reviewing a restaurant after a long time. As a matter of fact, this is my first official review of 2022, and I am glad it happened to be of 'Himalayan Wild Yak' which had been on my radar since it opened its door six months ago. The restaurant was super clean and decorated appropriately to the region that the food was representative of. Our server Prince was nice and attentive. Also, we had a wonderful conversation with the food runner (sorry! I forgot to ask her name) who was so sweet and caring! We were also fortunate to meet and take pictures with owners/chefs Keshab & Tuk. All the staff really made this the best experience. Diving into the food...We got some complimentary sel-roti (deep-fried rice flour bread) and achar (radish pickle) as soon as we were seated. We finished that in no time. LOL. Literally, this restaurant serves all possible meat combinations on the table including chicken, pork, boar, wild buffalo, goat, and yak. We tried each of the meat items, and I was blown away by each one. The food was spicy, flavorful, and plentiful. Each item had its own unique taste and was packed with flavors. -Yak momos were juicy and well complimented by their signature tomato-based sauce -Marinated wild boar was beautifully presented & it was equally delicious -Honey glazed pork belly & buffalo chilli were my Mrs. favorites -Sukuti sadheko (marinated dry goat meat) just melted in my mouth (it was that good!!!) -Bhutan (goat intestines) was unique & the puffed rice served with it glowed the taste of this dish. Last but not the least, their 'Biryani for Two' was the star of the show for me. Chef Tuk brought the hot steaming biryani pot to the table and evenly mixed the dish for us right at the table. I gotta admit the biryani was on fire. The portion was huge. That was easily a biryani pot that can feed at least 4 people in my opinion. I am not a big fan of Biryanis in general, but I have to say this one simply won my heart. It was packed with flavors, but at the same time spice level was well balanced. Not to mention, their drinks were also very refreshing. The non-alcoholic watermelon chat was my favorite. Since I had to drive, I did not get to try their cocktails, so I will definitely come back to try some unique cocktails and vegetarian dishes. To sum up, this restaurant is excellent all around. Amazingly unique and tasty! Love, love the outdoor seating for a beautiful evening! Great service! My first time having yak and momos. So many things I wanted to eat and not enough stomach space. I'm happy to report that they have a kids menu, though we did not order from it. They were able to prepare a mild version of the chowmein, which was delicious! We have been here 2x and have had the following - buffalo/yak momos - Nepali set - crispy kale - buff choila - yak stew - garlic naan - karauni - tandoori chicken - grilled yak - goat curry (skin on) Every single one of these dishes were delicious! Our favorites were tandoori chicken/ garlic naan (absolutely amazing because they actually make it fresh and add Lots of garlic!) / goat curry / momos (so juicy!) and tandoori chicken because it's moist and was very flavorful! Some of the dishes with buffalo such as the choila , had tough meat but I think that's not abnormal. Everything was made well and service was really good! This restaurant is in a popular location in the town center. The momos are really flavorful and good. However the rest of the food, we didn't get any yak but got their chicken and paneer dishes were average. They just come plain and with no garnishments to tie the dish together. For example tandoori chicken is just chicken in a bowl, no grilled onions or lemon or peppers to enjoy it with. The few times I had Himalayan food, it tasted like Indian cuisine with milder spices. That was fine with me, since I like Indian food anyway. But I just didn't think there was anything unique about it... until I came to Himalayan Wild Yak. Since my family has never had yak meat before, we thought we'd go full-on yakin' mode and ordered the yak momo, yak stew, and grilled yak. Also added the spicy pork curry since we've never had pork cooked in curry either. While waiting for our entrees, the friendly waiter served us some pickles and a bread that's almost like a doughnut, only more dense. The pickles were really sour for me but went surprisingly well with the bread. Overall, the taste of all the yak dishes were definitely not infused with spices like Indian food. Honestly, I was hoping there was more flavor to it. Having said that, the yak meat in all the dishes was much more tender than I had expected. The grilled yak was prepared sous vide method and came out perfect. There was not a lot of juice from the pink center like regular beef but was still delicious. The yak momo was served with a mildly spiced dipping sauce. I couldn't wrap my head around describing the taste of the sauce. All I can say is that the taste was interesting, not in a bad way and neither was it a must-try. The yak stew was my least favorite among the 3 yak dishes. Again, not because it's bad but it just wasn't that special. The meat was tender for sure. The curry of the spicy pork curry was not the typical curry you would expect from Indian cuisine. The spice comes mainly from chilli peppers rather than the familiar aroma of turmeric, cumin, ginger, and black pepper. As some other reviewers mentioned, the pork used is from the belly part, which is quite fatty. I understand it's not for everyone but I personally liked it. Instead of the rich texture and aroma of Indian spices, the dish gets its richness from the fat of the pre-fried (I'm guessing) pork belly. This was the only dish that I did not feel under-seasoned compared to the yak dishes Verdict: I'd like to think that I've finally had authentic Himalayan cuisine (not the Indian inspired ones I had before)? Perhaps some native Nepali who have dined here can verify :-) The spices were definitely much more subtle. I'm giving it 4 stars for the novelty and, more importantly, quality of the preparation. read more

Whew, this place is fantastic. Ordered the goat curry, butter chicken and buffalo/yak momo. Though everything we ordered was fantastic the butter chicken definitely takes the cake. The curry itself is creamy and rich in flavor while the meat is cooked just right. I couldn't stop eating it...probably the best butter chicken ever! The goat curry was also delicious as well! It was bone in and some pieces of bone even still had the bone marrow inside which was a delicious surprise. The curry was strong and was a good combination with the intense goat flavor. And the momos were also delicious! Buffalo and yak honestly tasted pretty similar to me, but maybe that's because my taste buds just aren't as refined as others may be. All in all this has become my new favorite spot to get my curry fix. Going to try other dishes next time, but was blown away! The service is also great! I am no expert on Nepalese cuisine, but this place is distinctive. I have visited twice now, and will be returning. I have ordered both vegetable and yak momo. The sauce on both is a polished tomato garlic blend that is by Indian food standards mildly spicy. The ground yak in the momo has a seasoning that is aromatic and earthy. It flirts with both your taste buds and your olfactory senses. I liked it a lot. The veg momo is light and aromatic. It complements the sauce beautifully. The mouth feel and aromatics play off the mildly spicy sauce melodiously. I use sous vide cooking at home. On the menu they disclose that the grilled yak steak is cooked sous vide for 8 hours. It is specified as medium rare. So I ordered that on my second visit. Your medium rare strip steak is easily done in 90 minutes, an extra hour if you start with it frozen. The yak steak is very lean and very tender. The extended time is necessary to break down the connective tissue in the lean yak steak. The result is like a very beefy lean venison steak. I have eaten at fine restaurants around the country and across most of Europe. Here I found new tastes, distinctive aromatic dishes, and good service. When my family collects in this area, I will bring them here. Don't miss this gem. read more

I got yak korma ($22.00), garlic naan ($3.50), a south Indian mule ($6.00), and some kaurani ($5.00). The sales tax was $2.73, and I left a $9.65 tip. A south Indian mule has vodka, lemon juice, ginger, saffron , cumin, and coriander (https://www.rumispice.com/blogs/recipes/mumbai-mule). It was a very good cocktail. I have had lamb korma before, but the yak korma was better. Yak is like beef, but it is leaner and has more flavor. Kurauni is a dessert made from evaporated milk solids (https://www.vegrecipesofindia.com/khoya-mawa-recipe-homemade-khoya-mawa/#h-about-khoya-recipe). It was very good. I would say it had a taste intermediate between flan and rice pudding, with the consistency of cottage cheese. The service was quick and friendly. The decor was a modern north Indian/Himalayan motif. We live right across the street from here and love momo, so I was very excited to try Himalayan Wild Yak. The yak momo were good, and I really liked the dipping sauce that came with them. We also had the truffled naan. I'm usually not a huge fan of black truffles but I'd heard good things and the flavor was on point. Pleasant, easily detectable, but not overwhelming at all. We also had the butter chicken. I have only ever had Tibetan Himalayan food, so I don't know if Nepalese food is this much sweeter usually, but it was cloying. I'm not sure if yak butter is that much sweeter, or somebody made a mistake and accidentally added whatever sugar was supposed to be in the sauce multiple extra times, but we couldn't eat it even after wiping down the chicken. Maybe that sugar thing was something they'll work out. I hope so. We'd give it another try, though. Just not with the butter chicken this time. read more

Oh my gosh! One of the most memorable meals I've had in a long time. Heard about this place for awhile and just now got around to trying it with my husband. Went around 4:45 on a Friday evening and sat at the bar. They have happy hour until 6:00. We got a smoked old fashioned and and a Himalayan Manhattan. Both really good. You can actually get the smoke on the Old Fashioned! For apps, we got the boar and pork belly. Both so flavorful! Boat was seasoned well and came with 2 sauces. The pork belly was super crispy...and I don't need to say more than that. For our main, we got the Biryani Yak for 2. Never had Yak before, tastes very similar to beef, but leaner. It came out hot and fresh, deliciously spiced, and definitely for more than 2 people. More like 4-5 people. Also got the garlic naan, raita and some sort of pickle. Truly, everything was amazing. I was very disappointed with the braised short ribs. It only comes with ONE short rib( a small one) despite the description saying short ribs, plural. I called the restaurant to make sure that this wasn't a mistake. I was told that I was correct. It only comes with ONE short rib, despite the restaurant website stating short rib(s). I would strongly recommend changing this on the website, it's very deceiving. Charging $25 for ONE short rib and a small portion of rice is a huge rip off. Especially given that even with inflation, I can go to the grocery store and get a pack of short ribs for less than $25. read more
