What a great find! We came on a busy Friday night and their downstairs restaurant was full so we got sent upstairs to their overflow spot and we were collectively grateful for this so we could enjoy a quieter dinner together! All the food was so delicious, really enjoyed the dumplings and the crab rangoon. I'm so picky about my crab rangoons and they were fried perfectly with a delicious creamy inside!! Big fan of the baby buk choy too, was seasoned perfectly. Our waitress was such a sweetie! Easy to joke with and was all around so lovely. Definitely want to come back!!
My friend brought me here. It was good we got the crab Rangoon, orange chicken, vegetable fried rice and a taro milk tea with tapioca. They were extremely busy but we were sat down within a few minutes. Food came fast too. The ambiance is Chinatown Asian vibe. There's large table and chair seating for small and large groups. Parking can be a challenge if street parking.
Delicious food and quick service. We stopped in for a snack and loved the soup dumplings. They were so delicious and filling. We also got a sushi roll and it was great too ! It is small inside but there is plenty of seating.
Best Chinese sit-down spot I've been to in Chicago so far! It has a very mom-and-pop feel. The decor is a little older, but it fits the casual vibe perfectly. Service was nice overall. The only issue was they probably forgot our salmon nigiri since it didn't come out until after we finished eating and reminded them. The Mongolian beef was the best version I've had in Chicago so far. The texture was perfect, the meat wasn't fatty, and it wasn't oily at all. I just wish the sauce was a little sweeter. 8/10. The scallion pancakes were incredible. Super crispy, flaky, and not greasy. Definitely one of the best I've had. 9.5/10. The chicken soup dumplings were good, but a little inconsistent. Some were packed with soup while others lost most of it. 8/10. The biggest surprise was the egg tofu with enoki mushroom. The tofu was silky, the enoki added great texture, and the flavor was delicious. Easily the best egg tofu I've had. 9/10. The salmon nigiri was fine, but didn't stand out. I did love their ginger though. It was sweet and not overly spicy.
The food that was served was not what we would expect. The dumplings were broken, and the lemon grass wings tasted like fried wings. The service provided was acceptable, but not for an 18% gratuity. The ambiance of the establishment was normal and pleasant. The worst experience was the men's restroom which reminded me of a wet dog aroma.
It was our first time here and probably last. Unfortunately the food fell short and was just okay. The hand pulled noodles did not look nor taste hand pulled. When you order hand pulled noodles you expect the slight chewiness and texture that they are known for. The salt and pepper pork had a battered coating much like that of sweet and sour chicken and not the thinner version you get elsewhere. The salt and pepper taste were lacking. The xiao long bao was probably the only thing we really enjoyed. Service was speedy and the food came out fast. Unfortunately there are too many other restaurants for us to visit to come back for just a meh experience.
Food quantity is the best. Every single dish that we ordered is shareable and delicious. So pricing is not that bad considering that everything is shareable. Our total came up to $58.62 after ordering 1 boba, 1 appetizer, 1 soup, 1 XLB, & 1 fried rice. This food quantity would have been enough for 3-4 people to share depending on how much you eat. Service is a little lacking when it comes to checking on you but if you flag a server, they'll attend to your needs immediately. Ambiance is an authentic mom & pop Chinese restaurant. Big tables, shareable dishes. TIP: If you like condiments such as siracha or hoisin, you have to ask.
Hing Kee is definitely worth a stop, but just know you might have a bit of a wait. The wait was longer than we would've liked, but the restaurant isn't that big, so I totally understand how it can back up during busy times. Once we were seated, the restaurant was standard looking and clean. The food made up for it. The egg rolls were super fresh, hot, and perfectly seasoned with a great crunch. The General Tso chicken was the star though, really flavorful with a nice balance of sweet and heat, and there was this bright hit of orange zest that made the whole dish stand out. Overall, great food and I'd come back, I'd just plan ahead and expect a wait.
Hing Kee has a huuuuuge menu, but I only wanted dumplings because I wanted to eat at other places too. Ordered the pork xiao long bao and the shrimp & pork dumplings in szechuan chili oil. Didn't get much of that soupy goodness with the XLB because each one was unfortunately leaking already before I even touched them. So all in all, the dumplings were good, but were they amazing? No. I was disappointed, but still liked the dumplings even though there was no soup in them. Service was whatever and the table we were sat at was a bit dirty. The Vietnamese coffee was awful too. I figured it wouldn't be good as I wouldn't order something Vietnamese at a Chinese place, but husband really wanted coffee. Don't order it haha
This place needs to be more popular!! The food is heavenly! The food was so good, I didn't take pics of everything cuz I got really busy eating The flavors were dancing in my mouth! I had a couple of vegetarian items- mapo tofu and friend eggplants. My family had a few chicken dishes and each one loved it all. The table next to us got some fried rice and the aroma made me hungry immediately after finishing my dinner. I know what I'm getting next time. This restaurant is in the middle of China Town, so parking is always a challenge, but put in the effort and get here cuz it's worth it.
This restaurant is located in Chinatown. It is a very small establishment, seating is limited. We sat down & placed our order pretty quickly. We ordered the chicken dumplings and combination fried rice. I also got a brown rice, green tea. The combination fried rice came out first it wasn't fresh. It was served to us a bit lukewarm. Decent size dish, it can serve up to two people. The rice was very mid in flavor. It lacked the traditional fried rice taste. We requested chili oil to savor our food. The chili oil added a good heat to it. The chicken dumplings were excellent. You do get quite a bit. Me and my partner shared them and had a few left over to take home. My brown rice tea was excellent nice and light green tea flavor with a nutty rice undertone. The cleanliness of the outside area where we all eat at was pretty up to par. However, the bathrooms were disgusting as soon as you walk back there before even entering the bathroom it smells atrocious. I walked into the women's restroom. It was a pigsty. I saw something floating above the door doorway and it was a roach caught in a spiderweb. It doesn't even feel safe to wash your hands in there it is that dirty. They need to do something about that because that is a representation of how they are treating their kitchen back there because it is right next to the kitchen. I did feel some kind of way after eating and seeing that but Hopefully they get their bathroom together other than that I did enjoy my experience here. I might come back because they have so many great options on their menu and I'm interested in trying a few other things. The service was good. They accommodated us intended to all of our needs.

I wanted soup dumplings while in Chicago and found this spot while searching online. Nate and I walked in around 8 pm on a weekday and were able to get a table right away. The menu is huge, but we were focused - we got an order of pork xiao long bao and shrimp toast. Service is no frills and efficient. The dumplings came out steaming hot and they were full of pork. A few did stick to the basket and ripped, so that was a little sad, but they were flavorful and tasty. I loved the shrimp toast - it was crispy and savory, and covered in sesame seeds. I would definitely come back for more soup dumplings and other dishes. The portions for main items looked huge, and it would be a great place for groups.

i wanted soup dumplings while I was in Chicago and this place delivered and far exceeded my expectations. i ordered a veggie noodle soup as well and the portion size was huge! the soup dumplings might some of the best i've ever had. pretty quick service and conveniently located in the heart of Chinatown. read more
Came here for dinner with my boyfriend and we both loved this spot. We were seated very quickly and the servers were all very nice. We got the XLB pork soup dumplings as an appetizer and they were super good. Very good flavor and the dumpling wrapper was great. I ordered the spicy Szechuan chicken and I added Chinese broccoli. I wasn't sure how much flavor it would have when it came out just based on the appearance but it ended up being so good! My boyfriend got the BBQ duck hand pulled noodle dish and he really loved it. Said it was one of his favorite soup dishes he's ever had. Overall, very cute little restaurant in Chinatown. I would definitely recommend! read more

- Vibes: round tables, good for food w friends or casual date - Crowd: pretty busy for a Saturday lunch - Menu: TONS of choices - Value for price: 5/5 (most full size dishes are $12-15 which is a steal in 2024) - Vegan friendly! Went to Hing Kee on a Saturday around 1 with a group of 6, and we sat down right away but the seats were pretty full afterwards. We were super impressed by the amount of menu choices, ranging from Japanese/normal appetizers to pho to stir fry noodles to sushi to meat/rice dishes to noodle soups to coffee AND boba. Service was brusque but pretty quick (food for our whole party was ready in 15min) but heads up, they won't split the check individually for a large group (which led to an extended argument with the waiter because some of us were paying with corporate cards). Between the 6 of us we tried a variety of different foods, but nothing wowed us. The favorite item of the table was the braised Chinese eggplant with mushroom, with a flavorful sauce. I had the shrimp wonton, pork, and mushroom noodle soup- the noodles were a fantastic chewy texture but the soup was overall a bit bland and only came with two wontons, two pieces of pork, and the equivalent of 1 sliced mushroom. Portion sizes were really good for the price point though, so if you're not super particular about life changing flavors/polite service and need a quick and affordable place to eat then you've got the place. read more

Hing Kee is always a go-to spot when I need something to eat at an affordable price. The restaurant is fairly small but I'm always able to get a seat and get my order taken almost immediately. I've been satisfied by everything that I've tried here including their noodles, dumplings, chicken, seafood, and veggies. I'd highly recommend this place. And they validate parking at the Chinatown parking lots. read more

This is THE spot to go to for Xiao long bao (soup dumplings). I have come here 3-4 times already and each time the food is consistent and delicious! I always order the pork and crab Xiao long bao and one of the wontons in szechuan chili oil sauce. I highly recommend at least one of each! Each Xiao long bao is such a great size. It's two bites for me and fits snuggly in the soup spoon so you can slurp up all the good soup in each bite, and hold enough of the sauce. It's flavor is well-balanced! The wontons in chili oil sauce is always an amazing flavor bomb! I recommend getting a side of rice and a vegetable dish to help balance out the meal and flavors. We got the Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce. It was a little overly blanched this time I think but I still enjoyed it! We also got a small bowl of egg drop soup. Definitely serves 2 people, and very satisfying and comforting. Service was efficient! I like that we could walk in on a Sunday around lunchtime and it was busy but it was only a 10 minute wait. I definitely recommend this spot for quality of food, short wait times, and reasonable prices. read more
I gave them an extra star for giving me a credit for the shrimp spring rolls in rice paper. You may like them but it was way too much lettuce and one tiny shrimp. The rice paper was thick like paste. I told them we didn't want it and the waitress returned and said she couldn't take it off. I was on vacation and wasn't about to argue over 12$ and ordered the dumpling this place is known for. I'm funny acting about food. I was barely able to eat three of them. They were ok but mostly if I hadn't been traveling with my elderly mother I would have also returned them and given up on this place. My mother says they were good and practically every table had them so again....im funny about food. Requested the check and she had scratched out the rolls and only billed me for the dumplings. In addition, the people near me ordered soup. One lady ordered the hand tossed Chicken Noodle soup. I asked her how it was and she said too much and just ok. If you like huge bowls of soup, they probably have one that you'll enjoy. read more

We stumbled upon Hing Kee after walking around. The spot was busy, so we decided to try it. We ordered the crab and pork Xiao long bao, Szechuan chicken + onion and dry chili beef. Service was quick and the food was alright. The soup dumplings were rich. The Szechuan chicken felt like a plate of onions with a side of chicken but had nice taste. The chicken felt a little too soft.. The dry chili beef too had nice flavor but felt a little limp though it looked crispy. Staff was almost too attentive, I.e. we paid and signed the receipt, and 2 seconds later she was already there collecting it. Overall fine experience. read more
We were seated right away on a Friday at 6:30pm. However, we did get one of the last tables. The service was decent. We started with drinks: a Thai tea and Diet Coke. Both very good. Then we ordered crab Rangoons. The filling was very flavorful but the inside was a little cold still. My boyfriend ordered sesame chicken, but it tasted more like orange chicken. The chicken was very crunchy, almost over cooked. I ordered the stir fried soy sauce beef flat rice noodles and they were AMAZING! The portions were huge also. I wouldn't get the sesame chicken again but the flat rice noodles I'd definitely recommend. The menu is huge so there is a lot to choose from. read more

There were 7 of us an we were able to get a seat within 30 minutes on a busy evening! The hostess was helpful and the service during the entire evening was amazing despite them being very busy! We had a few vegetarians with us and overall, the food was tasty, they have a lot of variety of options and really cool non alcoholic beverages. You can BYOB! A cool option to check out in China town! Their chilli oil was one to remember! read more
I'm between 3 and 4 for this :( Hing Kee used to be one of my favorites, but it just feels so different than what it was in the past. Gone are the days of the man pulling noodles in the window, but I suppose there's a new sushi bar. That being said, it's still solid food and at great prices (for today's economy). Service is hit-or-miss (as seen in other reviews), as the workers we had didn't really seem to want to be there. For example, when we got our food, the lady muttered the wrong dish name to us, and we accidentally assigned the wrong orders within our party. Food quality is still good but not as great. As seen in the photo, most of the meat I got was fat - and the parts that weren't fat were really overcooked so it was very tough. The broth for the spicy garlic beef soup was not bad but was imbalanced in a way I can't really describe. So not bad but enough to be like, this could be so much better, if that makes sense. The XLB is pretty good - some of them stuck to the lettuce so they leaked out prematurely but overall, a great choice for any order. Overall, Hing Kee is still a safe go-to, but we're going to try somewhere new on our next visit. read more

No frills, laid back environment. Also, good portions of food for the price. Recommend the pork soup dumplings and the Dan Dan noodles. read more

The day after the Chicago marathon, I went with my father for a well appreciated Chinatown lunch! We ordered dumplings, xiaolong bao, and oxtail soup with hand pulled noodles. The service was quick and the food tasted great. The oxtail was spiced well and I regret not getting another order of xiao long baos. So delicious!! I had to remind my father how to eat a xiao long bao without getting surprised with the hot soup inside. read more
Hing Kee hosts an awesome annual lunar new year event with fun activities and a plethora of food for guests. I was lucky to attend this year and try a lot of their menu at a great price! The restaurant was packed and very festive for the holiday- there was even a lion dance group who performed wonderfully in the restaurant! Staff and hosts were very welcoming and gave a small presentation about the history of lunar new year. The menu was served family style and included fried egg rolls, sweet corn & seafood soup, and veggie/pork steamed dumplings. The pork dumplings were definitely my favorite! The egg rolls were massive and piping hot with an interesting spice that I did not expect. I did find the soup to be a bit bland, however. For the entrees, we were served heaping plates of dry chili chicken, salt & pepper fish filet, honey walnut shrimp, beef with string beans, bok choy in garlic sauce, chow mein noodles, and shrimp/pork fried rice. Although deep fried, the salt & pepper fish was incredibly crispy, light and fresh- I highly recommend this dish! I also really enjoyed the honey walnut shrimp, which was crispy and not too heavy on the sweet sauce. The beef entree was super tender with an excellent flavor, complemented well by the perfectly crunchy string beans. The dry chili chicken was well cooked but not at all spicy, and I found myself wishing for the signature numbing spice. The chow mein and fried rice were also well cooked but a bit forgettable compared to the other entrees. Dessert was a dish of ultra soft glutinous rice balls filled with sesame and served in a warm ginger soup. This may have been my favorite dish of the night! It was warm, comforting, and a perfect light end to the meal. I had a great experience at Hing Kee and will definitely return, especially to try the xiao long bao! read more

We were sat and greeted promptly. The wait staff were attentive and kept our drinks filled. The restaurant was casual and busy. The food came out quickly and was delicious! I got the Cantonese beef noodle, vegetable dumplings, taro boba, and lychee freeze. The beef Noodle had more cartilage than expected. Lychee freeze wax yummy and had popping boba. read more

I enjoyed eating here! Heard some good things and decided to check it out. Waited 20 min for a table, they were slammed, but got in fairly quickly. Ambiance is casual, it's a small restaurant. Staff is typical of authentic Chinese restaurants, it's chaotic, hasty and antisocial. People don't eat at these places for the service experience, they show up for the good food. Xiao long bao - 8 pieces for $11, these were delicious paired with the black vinegar and some hot chili oil. Shrimp wonton with hand pulled noodles - this was so good! Always go with hand pulled noodles. Great texture and broth was light. For dessert, we got the fresh fruit boba mango and passion fruit. The Boba was so fresh and soft! Anyway check em out! They have some vietnamese pho and Japanese items on the menu too - sushi and some bowls. Also - there's no dimsum here, just wanted to set that expectation. read more

The restaurant was so busy when we tried to dine in. We waited 20 minutes for our table, and the servers were very quick with wiping down the table, taking our order, and preparing the check. What we ordered: Noodle soup: Good, but the soup dumplings definitely stole its shine once they were served. It's good to share with someone if you plan on trying the dumplings. Pork Soup Dumplings: I recommend this the most! In my opinion, pork is the best filling for soup dumplings. I love how they use napa cabbage instead of steamer paper, so we can eat the flavorful cabbage as well. So clever! Chicken Dumplings: Great, but not as flavorful as the pork. We enjoyed our meal here. If we were to come again, we would order plenty of soup dumplings! read more
This place was great! We ordered almost the entire menu, and nothing disappointed! The staff was friendly and thorough, making sure that we ordered exactly what we wanted. The restaurant can get pretty full, but there is also outdoor seating, which I recommend if the weather is good that day. I've been here about 5 times and really needed to give it a review so here we go. Service is always attentive and this place gets very busy. It's small inside so it's also very loud. I am okay with this though, but it's worth noting. The food here is fabulous. My two favorites are the pork Soup Dumplings which are handmade and burst with each bite. The next is my go-to entree here, the Dry Chicken Chili. I've had this at over 10 Chinese restaurants and this one is without a doubt my favorite. From the spice of the pepper to the star anise this dish has it all! To-go orders are also quick and filled properly. If you're looking for authentic Chinese food look no further than Hing Kee in Chinatown, Chicago! 5 stars! read more

The food was solid. I liked the wonton noodle soup. There were a good amount of wontons and noodles. The pork soup dumplings could be better. The skin is thick on top and too thin on the bottom, so the dumplings kept breaking and spilling the soup. But the filling tasted good, and all the food came out quickly. Service was a bit shaky. They were not rude, but they were not very attentive either. Our waiter didn't offer us any water until we were done eating. It was a bit comical because we were basically ready to pay the check and leave, and he comes to our table with 2 cups of water. Overall, this place is standard. It's worth a try. read more
A great no-frills authentic spot for soup dumplings and expanded Asian cuisine. They literally have such a large menu, though they are known to specialize in a certain region of food. We came for their specialty- the soup dumplings. The xiao long bao (soup dumplings) that we got had the pork and crab in it and were wonderfully delicious and flavorful. We also got the schezuan green beans in a tasty pork sauce that was recommended by the waiter, and this was a nice side dish with rice. Such an affordable meal too! read more

This will be a pretty quick and short review because of how terrible our experience was. Viewer discretion Advised.... lol A friend of ours recommended this place and said they had the best soup best soup dumplings. We were excited to try this out... however to our surprise, the food was terrible. Food: - Pork Soup Dumpling (1/10): I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in a dumpling before. But this takes the prize on that. This was the most popular dumpling on the menu, so ordered it. However when we took our first bite, this did not taste like pork. My wife and I agreed that something didn't taste right. It was off. Couple of hours later, our stomachs were hurting pretty bad and we were not feeling good. We realized it was probably from this dumpling we ate. Not sure why there are so many great reviews and then so many bad reviews. But my assumption is this is a hit or miss kinda place. I won't be taking my chances here again. read more

In this plaza, there are several restaurants and there's a line for this place depending on when you arrive - especially during dinner time when there are large parties. The place is older so it's a little run down but don't be too discouraged to try the food. The xiao long bao was really tasty and we shared it between four people. The beef noodle soup was also tasty. The beef is tender and soft to chew on. It comes with enough bok choy that it's not overpowering. Overall, everything that we ordered tasted good. read more

Delicious little spot in Chicago Chinatown! My girlfriend and I came here for a quick meal when we were visiting Chicago. We specifically wanted some soup dumplings and egg tofu. The tofu was pretty perfect - it had a nice crispy layer and hot soft tofu on the inside. It also had just the right level of salt and pepper. The fried rice we got was likewise very solid. The only thing we found slightly lacking were the soup dumplings. They were smaller than we are used to and the soup wasn't as flavorful as we're used to either. Not bad at all but just doughier and blander than expected. Still a nice meal overall. Service was great and super fast, and they had a good system for tracking who came in first / was waiting for seats so we didn't have to hang around too long. Good experience overall and definitely recommend! Especially the spicy egg tofu :). read more
