I've lived in big cities but hadn't tried hip city veg til coming to Philly!! Ahhhh. This place made my heart sooo happy as a vegetarian. The entire menu is vegan friendly and tastes incredible. I got a vegan chicken spicy sandwich and sweet potato fries and completely crushed the meal in half an hour because it was so good. I ordered a juice to accompany my meal, it was tart yet sweet. A nice balance. If you have an insatiable sweet tooth like myself, I also would get a milkshake next time. Luckily, my friend let me try hers and as someone with a dairy sensitivity- it was incredible and you can't even tell it's nondairy. this will definitely be my new veggie junk food spot. The vibes are chill it's kind of cafe style. The university city location will have a lot of college students of course being right by UPenn! Sliders were top notch- a variety of 4 different types of "burgers " and I am not sure what they were besides delicious! I had this catered at a birthday party I attended. They served all vegetarian options. The setup was well put together. I will describe the foods I had below. Philly Steak Sandwich - This was probably the best option I had all day. I am not sure what they used for the 'meat' portion of this, but it was solid. The cheese helped make that portion less dry. The bread was also key here. Chicken Nuggets - These were made from organic grains and it showed. They were not that crispy and the Buffalo sauce was needed. The Buffalo sauce was very tasty. Cool Disco Chick'n Wrap - It was made with smoked tempeh, spinach, and tomato I believe. It was not too bad. The wrap held up well and the tempeh was appetizing. I should have added a sauce here, but alas, I did not. Ziggy Burger - This was also made with smoked tempeh. I added Buffalo sauce to this and it was not bad. Again, the bread was good and the tempeh was better with that Buffalo sauce added. Will I go back? I did not actually go, but I might head there. read more

Though the Smokehouse burger was my first love here, I've come to love their chicken nuggets too. I could happily give up chicken for these. Per my friend's recommendation I ordered the Udon Noodle bowl while my friend ordered the Chipotle Fajita wrap. Although I am not vegan or vegetarian, I always enjoy eating (and judging) faux meats. The Udon noodle bowl came with fake chicken which tasted similar to the real thing. The bowl was a good mix of the fake chicken, peanuts, sprouts, scallions and the black bean dressing. The Chik'n nuggets, for example, are the size of large tater tots - you would easily need to eat 20-30 of them to begin to consider it a meal, and at that point you're spending more than $30 on nuggets. The store is location right in the heart of University City by UPenn's campus and when I went in, it was packed with college students. I'll first start off my saying, the sandwich wasn't bad, it was worth stopping by to try it. I also loved that I didn't feel heavy or like I ate a bunch of grease after enjoying the sandwich. I just wish there was more in the sandwich to meet the amount of bread. Should I ever visit again, I would also ask for light ketchup. But the biggest treat was the tangerine turmeric beverage. That was the tastiest...most delicious beverage I've had in awhile. I was seriously going to order another while waiting for my food, but I didn't. If I was staying in town longer, I'd visit again to try other menu items. I'll just keep this restaurant on my radar next time I'm in the area. I think we need a HipCityVeg in California. This place was delicious and felt very pleasant to eat in. I opted for the Jerk Caesar salad, as I haven't seen that before. I don't typically go out for vegan, but the seasoning and texture definitely fooled me into thinking I was eating actual chicken. The water crests and lettuce were fresh and crispy also. The patty is very soft and I love the sauce that they use. Tangy and sweet. - Curry tofu wrap is huge but has a particular taste that I'm not a huge fan of. There's a ton of ingredients packed into it though and lots of tofu blocks. - Philly cheesesteak is very good. It's kind of small but the flavors are there and the mushroom has a nice texture. - Udon noodle salad has pretty good flavor but I wouldn't get salad from here. Let's face it, sweet potato fries are tasty, but they can never match the crispiness factor of fries formed from regular potatoes. There, the sauce added something extra. It was so good I could have drank it. Now it's gone and replaced with a self-serve sauce bar of boring condiments. The house sauce tastes like a weak honey mustard and the organic ketchup tastes like ketchup. There also is a Siracusa aioli if you're into that. Not only is the precious sauce gone, but the fry portion is so much smaller and still around $5. I wanted smaller portion options, but not at the large size prices! I just can't justify this anymore. It's a tasty sandwich in its own right that looks like a burger. The sauce on it is really good, so I was annoyed it wasn't spread on the entire bun, but just the middle. I wouldn't consider the Zippy Burger a real burger. It's not like a juicy beef burger. There were no juices running out on to my plate. It could use a bit more kick in terms of flavour. ** to ***** Crispy Hip City Ranch sandwich is usually good, but the last time I had it, the "chicken" cutlet was extremely dry and hard to eat. Maybe that was a fluke, but I wish it was more consistent. I still love the tangy ranch sauce. ** The Disco Chik'n sandwich was not enjoyable. The smoked tempeh was all right, but the grilled "chicken" and the rest of the sandwich were very dry and bland. I never knew the Vegan life can taste oh so good! I experienced that moment yesterday when I decided to go to HipCityVeg for lunch! Once I arrived I noticed that the store had a good amount of people that was dining in as well as ordering out. The menu had a good amount of healthy vegan food options to choose from. I decided to get the Ziggy burger and the banana whip. The Ziggy burger was so delicious and the buger was huge! I didn't think I was gonna eat it all at once but it was so good that I couldn't help myself! The organic smoked tempeh was flavorful and it didn't even taste vegan, it also came with fresh veggies and a special sauce that was also delicious! It was love at first bite! The banana whip was also tasty and it was simply fresh bananas that was placed in a blinder. It came out tasting like ice cream, a healthy ice cream! They also gave you the option to put brownies on top of the banana whip. Overall I'm definitely a fan of HipCityVeg, I love that this restaurant promotes a healthy lifestyle by serving good quality food that's all organic and plant based. Cute little spot right across from Penn's campus. I ordered the Philly "steak". This is my first vegan version of a Philly cheese steak. Actually, I have never had a real Philly Cheese Steak in Philly, and I have not eaten beef, on purpose, in more than 10 years.... soooo this is a difficult review to write. Overall, this sandwich was quite satisfying. It was a perfect amount of "cheesy" creaminess with grilled peppers, onions and mushrooms. I believe the "steak" was soy-based. It had a good meat-like texture and held flavor really well. The hoagie bread was also nice and soft. Normally, I would never be able to eat an entire hoagie but, I killed it! This hoagie was not safe in my hands! I also ordered the carrot ginger lemonade drink. I DID NOT taste any Ginger. :-/ Nor did I really taste any carrot. :-/ :-/ It really just tasted like watery lemonade with a squirt of carrot for color. The ginger kick was definitely missing! Still quite refreshing but nothing like I'm accustomed to as far as fresh juices are concerned. Lastly, I had the vegan chocolate brownie. I'm not a huge chocolate fan but I will say this brownie was pretty darn good! I can't believe it was vegan! Dark chocolate with chocolate chunks. Not too crumbly. Perfect amount of moisture. Sometimes it is really hard to make a good vegan dessert but this is one that I can return for. Overall fair prices and it seemed like the orders come out rather quite quickly. Managing the hustle and bustle around lunch near a University can be challenging but I feel that Hip City has a decent balance. Step up to the counter to view the menu of vegetarian options, and the drinks menu is to the right of the cashier. The Udon Noodle Salad was good. It's seared spicy tofu chicken ("toficken"?) served with Udon noodles with Arugla. At first glance, I thought "I should get some Sriracha for this", but the toficken itself was seasoned well enough that no additional seasoning was needed! It was also probably the healthiest thing I ate on my weekend trip to Philly. I got a Carrot Ginger lemonade and wasn't wowed by it. I got kinda jealous of the people walking out with Green Smoothies "Groothies" and the "Five Dollar Shake" looked really good too. My first experience at the DC location of HipCityVeg was alright, but I'm glad I gave it a second chance. This time, I ordered the Ziggy Burger, which was awesome! The burger included, organic smoked tempeh, ~special sauce~ lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and pickles. The smoked taste and texture of the tempeh was mouthwatering, especially when paired with the special sauce - I'm determined to find the recipe to make it at home! My sister got the Bistro Bella burger, which is one of her go-to entrees and was also delicious. I also tried a bite of the curried tofu wrap, which was good too. Of course, the meal wouldn't have been complete without HipCityVeg's classic sweet potato fries and sirarcha aioli! (Def worth the extra $5).
