One of the Best Diners I have Hit! Firstly the place has the wonderful old diner feel, not a fake one but the authentic thing. To start we ordered the corn poppers and onion petals. The corn poppers were delicious, basically cheese balls with corn kernels in them. They were fried, but not dripping in oil with good flavor in the cheese, and a nice crunch from the kernels. The onion petals were good, but not the star of the show. For dinner I ordered the Black Bean Burger Deluxe. One of the best black bean burgers I have ever had in my life. Solid flavor through with a nice earthiness that made me feel like I was really eating a burger. It also had a good consistence not to far from a beef burger. My wife ordered the Jitterbug, which was a burger on white bread swimming in gravy. While I didnt taste it her face said it all, a winner! For dessert we tried the carrot cake. The piece was HUGE. The cake was most and flavorful, tasting natural. Walnuts had been soaked in and gave a nice texture to the cake. The frosting while a bit on the sweet side was not overpowering. Nonetheless, this purportedly "half way" diner served half way burnt hash browns, three-quarter way decent coffee, with a dubious wait staff that would give even the most seasoned traveler the heebie-jeebies. This cool diner is close to campus and court house. It is a nice throwback. The waitresses were very friendly. I got the miini waffle special. It had waffles, eggs and bacon. I also got orange juice. We love trying new places whenever we travel; even if it's in our own backyard (so to speak). On one of our last mornings, we stopped here. It's just as you'd expect a diner to be. My Sausage, pepper, & onion mozzarella breakfast special with shredded potatoes was just what you'd think it would be. The meat wasn't very spicy or sweet. There was an ample serving of peppers, onions, & cheese. The hashbrowns were also crispy, which I much prefer. The hot chocolate was just sweet enough and the whipped cream was good too. Best. Diner. Ever. Hands down, the atmosphere is one of the best features of this diner. Located just north of the center of town, the historic village diner is contained within an old fashioned Silk City pre-fab with a small, additional dining room. I've always loved getting a booth, but you can only really count on getting a coveted seat by the window if you come outside of the usual meal times. It's absolutely great for people watching. Or for watching Bardies trying to pull into the parking lot in their new Volvo station wagon (if they're rich) or their 1980's Volvo station wagon (if they're rich and pretending to be poor). Not only is the atmosphere integral to the proper diner experience; the food should also be at least average, somewhat greasy, and inexpensive. The burgers are decent, especially since it'll only run you $3.50, the fries are usually excellent, and the breakfast foods are great. One of the issues I do have is that pancakes and the like aren't served all day, but why bother when there are so many good sandwiches and other breakfast items available all day? And since everything is so cheap, you don't have to resort to ordering two eggs, potatoes, and toast for a meal just to save a few bucks (something I commonly find myself doing at local diners). Maybe I shouldn't be quick to call it the best diner ever. I love diners that are open 24 hours and have more booths, but expanding the hours would not be feasible and more seating would just ruin it. So I'll stick with my original assessment. read more

Not really sure what to say about this place, there's not much that jumps out at you to make it a memorable place. It's a SUPER cramped, old diner with very little parking. Primarily it's a go to for the locals, so expect it to be packed around breakfast time & jam packed on a weekend. The biggest negative for this place are all the people from bard college, who are typically all, self-centered rude little spoiled rich kids. The food is just diner food, again nothing to get excited over. No real signature dishes that make this place stand out. Everything is just what you would expect from any other roadside diner that you can find anywhere. One more thing to note is that they only accept cash. You can't help but be enthralled by the character of the Village Diner. It's almost as if you step inside a time capsule and experience a diner of the 1920s to 1960s. As a historian, I was tickled pink by the integrity of the interior and exterior of the diner and couldn't help but looking at every single detail. Great ambiance, great character. A little diner with big flavors (and portions)! My friends and I were on a camping trip down by lake tagaknic and we were looking for a quick lunch spot. After driving for an hour trying to find a decent looking place to eat we came across this nostalgic looking diner. The place looked small on the outside but it was pretty spacious when you go in. The staff is super friendly and welcoming! The food was surprisingly good. Completely unexpected. I ordered the long horn special which was a roast beef, sautéed mushroom/onion and cheese sandwich with fries. The sandwich was huge and the flavors matched. I subbed the fries for sweet potatoe fries with no problem. I really enjoyed the food here. They had a bunch of homemade baked goods that I wasn't able to try because I was full from my meal but they all looked really good. For servicing a group of 14 hungry campers the little diner did amazing job. If I'm ever in this area again I would come back here. read more

The family and I enjoyed this Babylon diner. A lot. Breakfast is served all day, and everything we ordered was yummy. I went with the Eggs Benedict, executed perfectly. My wife chose the hash and eggs, with homemade corned beef hash and poached eggs. Also delicious. Daughter 1 chose the farmers breakfast, a sausage stuffing with poached eggs and root vegetables. It was great. Maybe the best item on the table. Daughter 2 went with the an apple french toast, which was good, but not the standout. All in all, this is a great place. Excellent service and food. I've really enjoyed this diner since I first went there after moving to Red Hook. They had alway provided good food and friendly service. When the pandemic first happened we used their curbside service once or twice a week and always made sure to tip very generously. I was one of the people that was unfortunate enough to not only catch the virus but also had to be hospitalized for a few months. I almost lost my grandmother and aunt to this virus. Yes, I'm still not comfortable going out. I have not gone into a restaurant. I do not shop in stores. I grocery shop only will curbside stores. Yes. I and some people are still uncomfortable going into establishments that are crowded and small and just going into places at all. That is why I use places that I can shop online or use curbside. Today I called in an order and they said it would take 20 minutes. I drive to this diner because of curbside. When I called to say I was outside I was asked if I was coming in as if I was crazy for calling to say I was outside. I asked if they still did curbside and was told well yea if you don't feel comfortable coming in. I have never been made to feel so stupid and embarrassed. After getting off the phone I looked up if they did curbside. Facebook, their website and google still say curbside. After waiting 20 minutes at the diner and 40 minutes since ordering I left. I watched people come and go with their orders. I felt as if I was being made to wait because I was not coming in. Even though it's still advertised. You lost $30 dollars for breakfast with a $15 dollar tip but you also lost a customer. read more

Hi, me again. My wife and I stopped in yesterday while on a road trip. Wow this place is cramped. We were promptly greeted by a friendly young man who showed us to a booth. People I am 6'6" and I weigh 250 lbs. it was a tight fit. Our waitress quickly arrived to take our drink order, H2O with lemon for herself and a bottle of Sam for me. Ahh..Beer. My wife ordered a hot open face turkey sandwich with a side of rice ( I married a woman who hates potatoes, why did i do that ?) and I went with the Roast Beef version with a side of mashed potatoes. We drove past it but we weren't looking very hard because there is a big sign by the road and it's a classic diner style building. I usually order a fish sandwich at a diner because it's hard to screw up frozen fish but I decided to go with one of their specialties. We both had a Vintage Burger which was actually a grilled chicken breast on a roll with bacon, onion, lettuce and tomato with mayo. It came with fries, a pickle and a small pasta salad (very small but very tasty). The fries are absolutely done correctly! It is a small basket of fries but it's worth the extra charge for the deluxe. Don't go here and not try them. The service was good. Not overbearing and close by if you need something. Pleasant and friendly. As old as it is, it's clean and it's apparent that they care. I'd definitely recommend it for diner food and I'll come back again. My 5 start review is based on diners. In this case, this is much better than the newer diners and a much more personal, reasonably priced and quiet. read more

This diner is awesome. A huge menu, low prices, fast and friendly service, and cool retro decor. My better half and I took our toddler there for a very late lunch/early dinner one day while shopping in Red Hook. As usual, he succumbed to the siren song of "Breakfast all day" and I pigged out on a reuben. The little man had eggs, hashbrowns, and toast and wore almost as much of it as he ate. We were in and out of there in under an hour, which pretty much never happens when we eat in restaurants with our kid. The food was excellent and we had a very good experience all around. I don't generally think about this place very often, but I finally had a chance to go in today, I actually got updated on what is happening with this place. (The last time before this was about 20 years ago, so yeah, it's been a "long time no see".) I was actually overly astounded at the service I received, though the first few minutes of the experience weren't that overall considered to be "great". I don't generally like it when I'm rushed. Today, before I could even get the door to the diner closed, the one waitress said "Sit anywhere you want". Thanks for telling me this, but give me a chance to close the door first! Although the parking areas out front proved to seem like there'd be a line a mile long, I wasn't anticipating the diner to be that short of occupants - I had to park in the back lot that is only for diner patrons only. It wasn't very crowded, but it did have it's fair share of amounts of other people/guests. Being I was just a single party of one person, I sat in the first small booth. The first small booth I saw was right there by the register. I'm not a very slim person, and I had a hard time cramming my stomach into the booth, but I made it. Shortly thereafter, I was greeted by the waitress asking me for my drink order. Things went well throughout the drink order, and I was charged a decent amount (in the end) for a small orange juice (as opposed to some of the other nearby diners who have been over-charging for the same size orange juice). From there, it only took a minute or so when the waitress came back and asked me for my food order. I knew almost exactly what I wanted from the menu I found from the place online. Things went rather smooth, and food came out rather quickly. I was rather astounded at the way it was prepared when I received it. I wasn't expecting the "Vintage Burger" (which isn't what it sounds like at all but is a grilled chicken sandwich with bacon as well as the normal condiments of lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and onion(though, due to health reasons I had the onion removed). Now, on top of that, and this is one thing they did differently that I actually enjoyed, their french fries were served in a little metal basket. That's not something you generally find that very often - you generally find french fries over to the side of the plate and not on it's own basket. There weren't too many, but I knew I got enough for the price I paid for the sandwich alone, so the amount of fries I didn't mind. The waitress very friendly today. She seemed rather friendly and down-to-earth, not like most diners nearby who have employees who only think about making money. I wasn't the only person they were trying to make friends at. I noticed them talk with a few other occupants at the establishment as if they knew these people on a first name basis. Again, another thing I liked. After eating all the food but the fries and devouring a few fries from the basket, I got all choked up. I kept coughing (no, I'm not mentioning here anything too much). Even after I mentioned to the person that I was going to be alright (after she asked if she should bring a water). Even after telling her that I was alright, she still brought me a cup of water. Thanks for the offer and thought- great thinking on your feet, but I knew I'd be alright after I coughed it out - a natural reaction to keep my body in homeostasis. Now, I have always known about the record of this building being in the new york state historical records, and even with the New York State Historical marker out front. And it was rather interesting to get a refreshed memory of just why this building is there to begin with. They have an outline of why it made it there on the front of their menu (be sure to read it if you are in the area from out-of-town). I didn't like that this place only takes cash and checks (and that's the other reason why I don't come in here very often). I see the point though, they want to try and preserve their historical record and keep the payment methods simple - including the inside diner payment system. Try to expand outwards. There are other things out there that will be able to keep your payments inline, and still not have to charge your footing if you offered card payments or even the contactless (ApplePay and the like) that even some places nearby are starting to use (including the Stewarts next door). I liked this trip there today. I was even so amazed at the trip, I even tipped the waitress over 25% of what the final bill was. Thanks for being there. I really enjoyed my experience here today. I don't think I'll be back again, but I could be back in another long time (like I said originally, I don't generally have very much cash on me at any one given time) - you'll just have to wait and see. read more

When I did time in upstate new york (don't get me wrong, it is beautiful up here but equally painful at times) this little diner was a regular stop for me at breakfast, lunch or for an early dinner. Its really old school which I love since when I was a teenager I used to frequent 50's diners. THe food is very good and what they do here they do very well. My personal favorite thing here is breakfast. If its eggs, pancakes, hash that you love. Its all done perfect. It's fitting that there is a real historic dining car in an equally historic place like Red Hook which has been on the map for generations. The exterior is green and white and the interior is just plain charming. I stopped by one afternoon for a late light lunch ordering a cup of chicken orzo soup and a Pepsi after doing some genealogy work. Delicious and simple diner food done right. There aren't many restaurants in the area and when you find a restaurant you have to make sure you go in to grab seats fast. The historic village diner looks like your average diner on the outside but once you step inside and try the food, it puts other diners to shame. First of all the portion sizes are humongous, the way things should be. Second the food tastes great, we came in as a group of 13 and all of food was cooked perfectly. I ordered the Lock Horn special and it was delicious, the roast beef was piled so high I had to take 2 bites to get everything. Also I chose to pair it with sweet potato fries which came with the petal sauce, delicious stuff. I love this place, but to be honest sometimes the food is inconsistent. Most dishes are fine, a few are great, but sometimes the food is just OK. I find the old breakfast standbys such as omelets, egg sandwiches, etc. to be the best choices. I've had less luck with specials. I also love that they serve hash-browns and not just home-fries, so you get your pick.
