Visiting the STL, looking for a local breakfast spot (not a national or regional chain). Actually found the Hive Cafe via a Yelp search. Upon arrival around 8am on a Saturday morning, found approximately 10 customers either eating or awaiting their breakfast. Was greeted with a welcoming smile by Kelly (who turns out to be the co-owner along with her husband Melvin? who was working magic in the kitchen). Ordered and thoroughly the Breakfast Bowl with a side of grits, but, regrettably, didn't have a big enough appetite to finish it all. A wonderful meal to start the day! I came to visit this place on Saturday Sept 6, 2025. Their wasn't no one at the to see how many people you have in your party, so I was told by another customer to go to the girl in the yellow shirt at the bar. I stood there for 10 mins waiting for her to recognize me and she never did, never said how may I help you, how many in your party are nothing she act like I was invisible...to where it pissed me off and me and my boyfriend left and went to first watch. This was very unprofessional and she and the rest of the staff caused money to walk right out the door. Now true it was very busy but it wouldn't a second to recognize the customer and say I will be with you in one moment. She never said anything and neither did the other one's that was behind the bar. I will not be back. First impressions are everything and this was a very bad one. So unorganized this place is. The owner should have a greeter to greet customers at the door. Another thing I would like to add is the bill. My mom and I were offered onions and peppers in our potatoes and it wasn't on the menu about a up charge and the waitress didn't mention it either. And my aunt SPECIFICALLY said NO onions or peppers in her potatoes and when the bill came out she was charged for it even though she clearly didn't ask. My mom got charged twice for her omelette even though she ordered once. Highly disappointed in this business since it I saw that it was black owned. read more

The food was lacking to say the least. I had chicken waffle grits and home fries. The chicken was burnt and the potatoes had the same burnt taste. Grits were just ok and there was nothing special about the waffle. The service was good. Or server was attentive and welcoming the ambiance was cool but we left smelling like burnt grease. We went on a Saturday afternoon. The vibes were solid. Good music and friendly staff. Mary served us and she was very informative about the menu and was able to make us an espresso martini! We ordered some French toast -- BOMB. The biscuits and gravy --BOMB. The chicken breast, crispy and flavorful -- BOMB. The down side is our food did not come out all at once. I can say for certain this is my favorite brunch spot in the Ferguson - Florissant area right now. I'll be back here for sure. read more

My omelette was cooked in some oily butter and the entire omelette was swimming in it. that's literally all I could taste. when I asked what it was i wasn't provided with a response. the potatoes were decent. lastly the pancakes were dry!! I love the location. The inside looks like a traditional cafe. The menu is classic with a southern feel. We tried the salmon croquettes and they were amazing. I would highly recommend them. The staff were friendly and helpful with menu recommendations. It did take awhile for our food to come out but we weren't bothered by it as the venue has a very relaxing vibe. The food was great , however the service is sub par. My party of two waited for drinks over 20 mins and I lost track of time waiting for food. I had to request every little thing , like utensils , sugar and the correct side with my order. I gave my card to the waitress and had to retrieve it from her after she had closed my check, then got carried away with the next customer; like she forgot she had my card and we were looking at her ready to go. 5 stars for service alone. No fewer than 5 people checked on me and all were very friendly. Eggs and bacon cooked perfectly. Potatoes a little bland, but at least nothing gross mixed in (as in no green bell peppers) and cooked well. Decent French toast. Not that I wanted, needed, or ate most of it. Seemed a bit overpriced, but not really. When I found out I could have ordered without the French toast and they would have reduced the charge, I'm sure the price would have been appropriate for what I can eat.
