Steamed beef tripe with ginger & scallion - lacked ginger & scallion but had carrots?? Overall pretty bland. Steamed bean curd skin rolls with pork - overall taste was ok and portion was pretty large. There's celery in it, which is not very traditional. Crispy roasted squab - pretty good! Thin crispy skin. Comes with salt but no lemon. Salted egg yolk lava bun - really good! If you like custard lava buns and salted egg, you'll love this. We also got the pumpkin sesame balls, which were visually big and there's no filling inside. Texture was crispy and chewy (almost mochi-like), but there was not much flavor. My family and I have always been big fans of this dim sum chain, however, we had a very disappointing experience dining here today. First, when we politely asked if they could remove the tea charge for one of our family members who doesn't drink tea, the server laughed and said no. This was surprising, especially since we are returning customers and have had this accommodated in the past each visit. Based on his tone, we chose not to escalate the situation. Second, we were charged for an item that no one at our table ordered. As a family, everyone takes turns marking the menu. It's never been an issue. We later confirmed this after noticing the dish was completely untouched towards the end of the meal. Upon reviewing the menu we had used to mark our selections, all of our marks were in blue ink and this item was in black with a signature (see photo). It was clear that this item had been added in a different color ink than the rest of our order. This was not a misunderstanding - it was added without our knowledge. We were charged $34 for it. Finally, the quality of that same dish (duck and rice noodle) was not great. It contained mostly bones, including the duck head (yes, the head ) and neck, with very little actual meat. If this is actually how the dish usually is prepared, it's definitely not worth $34. Overall, today's experience felt dishonest and disappointing. We wish they'd offer the traditional Chinese custard tarts and sesame seed balls, though. We had the Portugese custard tarts, but they're too sweet for our taste. We tried the jumbo pumpkin sesame seed balls before, but we don't care for the pumpkin filling and it was too big. It was busy but arriving at 10:45 AM was perfect to avoid the crowds and find parking, and we were seated right away! We were unable to flag a waiter to get water for my nephew, though. I originally thought that this location just served hot pot, but our server told us that this location started offering dim sum to serve overflow customers. Even though there was a red egg party going on and it was a Saturday during prime lunch time, the wait wasn't too bad. We were led into a private room with large windows, which provided views of the water and planes taking off/landing. HL Peninsula Garden is located right next to HL Peninsula Pearl which is one of a few in the HL family of restaurants in Burlingame/SSF. In my opinion, I would stick with either Pearl or the OG HL Peninsula Restaurant (even though this one has no view). Garden seems to try to emulate the others with an upper class feel but I thought the service was pretty bad at best which really put a damper on otherwise elevated Chinese banquet food. First we had made a reservation for 14 but the table was only set for 12 which irked mom who was clear about the reservation. It was also a bummer that we couldn't get seated by the large windows and instead got sat next to the bathroom...I mean, maybe we could have asked at the time of reservation but, it was unfortunate. Then when it came to food, the first half of dinner came flying out but then it screeched to a halt midway through with a dish arriving every 10 minutes or so with the last dish being completely MIA until prompted. Midway through, there was a "plate change" where the wait staff just piled all the new plates in the middle and left. Really odd! What do I do with my soiled plate? Food wise, most everything was good. I enjoyed the golden sand shrimp, the fried honey spareribs, and the string beans with pork and olive leaves best! The truffled fried rice did impart just enough black truffle flavor to make it interesting and I also thought both chicken (ginger and soy) were perfectly silky. Some dishes were a bit salty like our chicken and oyster clay pot and the red bean dessert, albeit already not my favorite, was also undercooked leading to a bitter taste. Combining several experiences into one review. My family celebrated birthday over dinner here twice. The setting is beautiful with floor to ceiling massive windows facing the bay view. There are usually a few other parties dining at the same time so it's the right balance of festivity and usually sufficient level of attention from staff. We enjoy most of the traditional dishes - Peking duck, lobster noodle, steamed chicken with ginger sauce, wagyu fillet sliced with veggies, etc. The meal typically ends with complimentary Chinese dessert such as red bean paste soup. We also tried dim sum lunch on a weekday and the place was quite deserted by 1:30pm and we never got rushed to leave and we stayed until 3:30 ish. All dim sum I tried were very good. But for weekend dim sum, some wait is expected. Given the overall ambiance and food quality and service, I would not hesitate to eat here and skip koi palace. read more

I have visited this restaurant twice. Some of the dishes featuring beef and pork had a taste that seemed to have a rotten and expired smell.

Food was decent... service was garbage. 2 tables down was a couple that seemed to be friends with the younger waiter (who was also our waiter...?) took forever to get use a single bowl of rice (we asked another waiter for a second time and got it). Our original waiter killed about 2-3 bottle of corona with his friend and then later brought out a plastic bag full of coronas and left it on the chair at said "friends" table. I think it's confusing enough to have two HL in the same plaza that's opened for dimsum. During dinner hours, Pearl is your regular family style cantonese cuisine, whereas Garden serves hotpot. What I learned today was that Garden is slightly smaller than Pearl. Each has its own line, so you may want to just go for whichever seats you first, considering theyre both under the same restaurant group. While Pearl has a dimsum menu that's similar to the other HL Peninsula, Garden has a slightly different, in some ways smaller menu. Im assuming its smaller purely based on how many items I'd order, maybe this will change going forward. That famous purple rice noodle roll isnt on Garden's menu. Instead, their beef rice noodle rolls and fish rice noodle rolls were made with hotpot sliced beef and crunchy grass fish filets. It was a weird experience because my mouth still registered those as hotpot items, there isnt much added seasoning to change it to dimsum. Other than the filling being interesting in a way I wasnt expecting, their noodle rolls were great, its that style where its thin enough but maintains its chewy texture. Their dumplings are still decent, like ha gow and chives and shrimp. There was one thay sounded great but didnt execute well, like the black truffle shrimp. While there is a hint of truffle and you see the black specks in the filling, the skin was too loose, its just fallen apart too quickly to be enjoyed. The total for the fish alone came to $191 before tax, which was shocking given what we actually received. We raised this concern with the restaurant, but they insisted it was the correct fish and that the price was justified. I am attaching a photo of a real Dongxing grouper for reference. Authentic Dongxing grouper is red, and it looks nothing like the fish we were served. This is extremely misleading and unacceptable. According to the website menu, the dishes offered at both are the same as well. All the dishes were piping hot and fresh! Interior is decorated similarly to other more high end Chinese dim sum restaurants. Lots of family gatherings at this spot. Service was quick, there is a 16% mandatory surcharge mentioned on the menu but the percentage is not that high and dim sum is very interactive/demanding so we did not have an issue with this. Steamed shrimp dumpling/xia jiao: so delicious, the shrimp portions here are massive! The seafood here is excellent quality and comes in great portions. Steamed Shanghai dumpling/xiaolongbao: So soupy and the skin is great. Not too delicate and not too thick/unenjoyable. Make sure to eat this the right way and try not to puncture the skin accidentally like I did on my first one! Salted egg yolk lava black buns: my personal favorite at this location. Right blend of salty and sweet and thick filling with fluffy bao. Steamed barbecue pork buns/chashao: HL Peninsula does a great job of bao, and they did not skimp on the pork filling. Good ratio of meat filling to bun. Shrimp rice noodle rolls/changfen: i loved how silky the changfen was and the soy sauce that we poured over added such a lovely nuanced seafood taste to the dish!! Mango piggy pudding: Least favorite part of our order by far. The agar agar powder/gelatinous agent was too strong and made for both an unpleasant taste and texture. None of the volume or stature in wait staff helped to make the meal smoother or less chaotic. Quality of Service was totally missing here. Zero. HL PENINSULA GARDEN BURLINGAME (HLPGB) is a beautiful setting with an extensive and delectable menu. The question is how the foregoing, beautiful surroundings and a great menu, fits in with a lack of experienced, quality floor manager and waitstaff. With a sparkling view of the bay and the multiple runways of the San Francisco International Airport, HL Peninsula Garden and its sister restaurant to its left HL Peninsula Pearl have taken over prime real estate on the waterfront along Old Bayshore Highway. Among all of the hotels that serve guests from the airport that are nearby, are two restaurants with distinctive exteriors that remind passersby of restaurants of the past. And why shouldn't they? The two neighboring spaces that the HL Peninsula team took over were once an Elephant Bar Restaurant and an El Torito Restaurant respectively. Now with some small slight improvements such as a paint job and new signage for their exterior and a relatively full remodel for their interior, we have not one but two new restaurants to choose from when locals and tourists alike are craving for some quality and authentic Cantonese cuisine, especially dim sum in the daytime. Nothing beats watching planes takeoff from the numerous runways at SFO while feasting on har gow and siu mai! What brought me and two other diners here was the fact that they were nice enough to pick me up from the recent trip at the nearby airport. Since it was still early in the day, I suggested we try one of the many places nearby that serve dim sum, and after they suggested their sister restaurant HL Peninsula in South San Francisco, I suggested that we head one exit south on Highway 101 to their sister restaurant HL Peninsula Pearl which is known for their dim sum afternoon dining. Unfortunately with it being around the holidays, many other people also were out enjoying themselves, and upon arrival there was an almost hour long wait for a table, and their own employee suggested that we head next door to HL Peninsula Garden as they said that there was no wait for the table and their dim sum menu was relatively the same. With that advice we headed next door and found the place relatively quiet with only a handful of tables filled with customers. Here, they proudly promote that they serve Chinese Hot Pot for dinner, but during the lunch hour it's all dim sum and traditional Cantonese dishes. Upon being sat with a view of the sparkling bay, their menu at HL Peninsula Garden for lunchtime is fairly simple with sections such as Steamer, Exquisite Seafood, Special Recommendation, Street Favorites, Rice Noodle Rolls, Roaster, Congee, Rice & Noodles, and Dessert. As per custom, you have to mark down the dishes that you want to order and bring them to your table. No more dim sum carts here! We decided to order Supreme Abalone Siu Mai from the Steamer section of their menu, Beef & Yellow Chive Rice Noodle Rolls from the Rice Noodle Roll section of their menu, and their A4 Wagyu Beef Fried Rice and Crispy Fish Skin Chow Fun with XO Sauce from their Rice & Noodle section of their menu. Four dishes for what we hoped was a quick lunch seemed appropriate. What was surprising was that our Chow Fun and Fried Rice entrées were delivered to our table first. Both were different from what we have tried in the past, as the main protein in the meal was rather unique with deep fried fish skin being the highlight of our Chow Fun entrée and the chopped Wagyu beef being the highlight of our Fried Rice entrée. The Fried Rice was the better of the two dishes as there was much more quantity to enjoy, and the flavor of curry throughout the entire dish added that extra umami. Of our two dim sum dishes, the elevated Siu Mai with its topping of Abalone was a really nice way to conclude our meal, and as the HL Peninsula team tends to showcase their rice noodles, no matter the filling, is always top-notch. Our total bill was $92.26 which included a pre-added in gratuity, of which one needs to truly review their bill in order to make sure that one is being charged for services rendered ahead of time, but they nicely do not add in an additional line for extra gratuity with your bill when you sign for it. I am so glad that the HL Peninsula team continues their growth in the Bay Area Cantonese dining scene, with these two locations, in addition to their wildly popular location in nearby South San Francisco, any additional location will only add to their growing orchards of restaurants if you will, and as an aspiring traveler, I for one am grateful that they are here and thriving. read more

Horrible place. No one was even at the counter upon walking in. A woman that has no smile came to give me a menu. Over priced, not quality food and VERY poor customer service. Food was brought to the table and never saw then again until time to pay. Food quality was bad. Maybe a 3 out of 10. They added a Forced automatic 18% "Service Charge". There are two locations and this one really hits the spot if you're looking for upscale Chinese food. We have eaten here in the general area and in one of the VIP rooms with kareoke. The menu has great selection and the staff are kind. My kids often are picky eaters and they both enjoy the fried rice and fried mushrooms. The lobster sashimi is on another level! We rented the VIP room for my brother in laws birthday and it was so much fun. Just make sure you place your food order asap because it will take time for them to make the large portions of food. Our favourtite was of course the lobster sashimi and they cook the head which comes out as baked lobster which was delicious as well. They have a limited wine selection but we opted for a procey one since we were celebrating. We haven't tried the hot pot yet and soon will do it next. read more

After being told by the HL Pearl next door of an one hour wait, we decided to try the dim sum here for about a 30~ minutes wait. Parking on a rainy Sunday was absolutely crazy. The dining environment here is relatively new and pleasant, service appeared to be chaotic, seating and ordering process can definitely use some improvement. Five of us ordered a some dim sum plus beef chow fun and stir-fried vegetables. Food was randomly delivered without a checklist unlike most of the other dim sum places. Some of the dishes came barely luke warm, quality of the dim sum was OK but not the best. We had to ask to find out if everything was delivered; they don't have a good system other than our verbal feedback based on our memory. Our total after a 15% tip was about $150 which was not too bad in today's environment but probably not a place we'd visit for Dim Sum any time soon. read more

Was hoping to get dim sum at the Pearl side next door but unfortunately it was a 2 hour wait on Saturday around 12pm. No surprise at all given it's lunch time and it's a hot spot. Thankfully the Hot Pot and grill side also offers dim sum just less. We got seated in 25min after arriving for a party of 8. You could definitely tell that they were understaffed because there were only a few workers around serving all the tables. We put in our order and it took 20 min for us to us it get our tea... then another 10-15 min for us to get our food. Overall, food was mediocre. I guess given that this side doesn't exactly specialize in dim sum I guess you can't expect much? The Har Gow and Shrimp Cheung Fun we're probably the best dishes. Despite the mediocre food, there was great company and a nice view so overall it was a pleasant experience. read more

Came here on Christmas Day with the family. Nice ambiance and presentation of the dishes. On the pricier side compared to other hot pot restaurants. Service was horrible, and the servers seemed clueless about the different cuts of meat. Took multiple requests for water refills and for the server to bring out missing items that we ordered. HL restaurants are notorious for their terrible service, but HL Peninsula Garden takes it to another level. After we were seated and given a teapot, there was no service at all. We had to flag down a waiter just to place our order, and throughout the meal, no one checked on us. We had to get up to ask for napkins, cold water, hot sauce, and even to request the check. We signed the credit card slip on our way out at the cashier table. The dim sum was just okay, but the view of the bay was beautiful.
