HMS is one of my favorite bars. It's divey and chill. Obviously come for the bar, but don't sleep on the food. I like the baseball steak ($18.99). It's an incredibly good value for under $20. Plus all entrees come with veggies and mashed potatoes. Sometimes I'll add a side salad for $2.50. I recently ordered the chicken parmigiana ($12.99) and it was fantastic. You get a sizable piece of chicken parmigiana, pasta, and a piece of broccoli for good measure. It resembled a frozen Banquet meal on steroid in the best way possible - super nostalgic lol. They have a charming handwritten menu listing all their specials, so be sure to check that out. It's cheap, easy, and the type of place I find myself in the mood for on a Tuesday night. read more

I have found my new favorite place to hangout. You'll need to set your clocks back half a decade and enjoy the feel of history. It's dark, just like bars used to be back in the day, but it's not scary dark, it's nostalgic dark. The staff is awesome. Speaking of awesome, our server, Nayeli, has been there nine years and she is one of the newer servers! What does that have to say about the place? Huh? Nayeli made our visit extra special. Excellent service! The nostalgic vibe came with relatively nostalgic prices. We had steak and lobster for $35. That's right. It's the everyday price. The lobster tail itself would be $35 at most places and this was a big, fluffy tail. The steak, was cooked just right, but it was thin...I'd say about a half inch. Not sure what kind of steak it was, but it was tender and it's not a huge portion. Still, for the price, no complaints. The lobster tail alone is worth the price, and it comes with potatoes and carrots. A small dinner salad or soup are $2.49 extra. My friend had the salad. Good, fresh salad, small portion, but good. I had pea soup. Loved it. The complimentary warm bread tasted like sour dough. Nice! I was celebrating my birthday so I had a Manhattan or two.... They are $7.50 if you go for the house booze, I went for the premium and it was $12.50. Still way under what most places would charge for a premium liquor manhattan. I also tried the fish and chips. $13.90. The fries are perfect and so is the fish. No greasy taste. The have a large menu..ranging from burgers to steaks and the prices are very afffordable. It was really loud in there for the first hour I was there, because it's the kind of place where people like to get together to celebrate whatever they want to celebrate. After the two large parties left, it was nice and chill. The restrooms are in the lobby of the Gaylord. Not hard to find. Parking is validated at the Brown Derby parking structure on Alexandria. First three hours free! Ain't gonna' lie, I'd rate the food 4 stars, but the vibe, the staff, the service, the prices are all so good, it's an easy 5 stars all the way around. Tucked into the Gaylord apartments this neighborhood gem should be on every LA visitor's list for this section of Wilshire Boulevard. Hard to tell if it's open as its windows aren't really open to the outdoors. The menu is inexpensive and the food very good. We had Old Fashioneds which were on the Saturday Happy Hour for $7.50, calamari (light and crisp), and fish and chips which were served piping hot! Come here for the bend-over-backwards super nice waitstaff. They are so friendly and warm. I didn't think much of the facade but once the host outside chatted me up, I was convinced. Their menu boasts of steaks that are priced so inexpensively. Check out my meal - steak and eggs for $16.99! And the portions weren't tiny, mind you. I was completely satisfied. Alongside the steak and eggs were some hash browns and they give you bread with a huge serving of strawberry jam and butter. I now understand why this is one of K Town's best kept secrets. This is one of the few restaurants left that give you so much value because they refuse to gouge their customers and label it "inflation" - this is why they have so many regulars. I intend to join that roster. Go and pay them a visit. You'll appreciate the food but it's the staff that'll keep you coming back. They are total sweethearts who really want nothing more than to serve you and make you happy. read more

Went on a date to LACMA and wanted a nostalgic spot for a meal. The HMS Bounty had been on our radar ever since spying it on the I.G. Easy parking in the Brown Derby building's parking lot next door. They even validate for a reduced fee of $5. On arrival it's connected to once famous Gaylord Hotel, now apartments. Pushing through the saloon style doors we walked into campy dark naugahyde filled bar and restaurant from days long gone past. Port holes and paintings of tall sailing ships from the majestic age of high seas discovery and conquest. It had that familiar smell of any really old place that we likely ate dinner years before with our grandparents. Our server was warm and friendly and came quickly to see how we were doing and did we know what we wanted... as many seem to be regulars. We said first timers and her face lite up and said, "you're going to like it!" The meal prices were very reasonable and they had many specials. My new GF had lobster and fillet and I had the porterhouse meal. She chose the house salad with real blue cheese and I tried the French onion soup. Everything was really great.. clearly not Steak 48 but wonderful nonetheless. She had a delicious Mai tai made from scratch... giving a run for the money with Tiki Ti. Fresh, tasty and light with no syrupy flavoring. It reminded herself of her last trip to Kauai. This place is a great place to meet up for some serious drinking... however those days are long past for me. We sat in the back for a photo op in the once coveted booth of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. All in all we loved this time capsule and will be back with friends. read more

I've been a frequent patron of hms bounty for almost or over 20 years intermittently. inevitably, I get tired of the Korean bar scene and foods, and occasionally I just want a cheap and well prepared steak along with reasonably priced alcohol and drinks. it's full of an older and younger local non korean crowd. i've bumped into and had conversations with the son of the original owners of the establishment, an affable, older latino gentleman, so it's a mom and pop operation, which i love to support. when I feel like a no frills, easy yet solid steak, I would come to hms for its baseball steak. a little small, but by far their best and most famous cut (trust me, I've tried their filet and porterhouse as well). hms is an anachronism and throwback in ktown. one of those bars where u enter and forget you're in ktown. i've intro'd quite a few people here who were clueless that such a scene was in ktown. bartender, an older thai lady, is always busy and overworked, but I can't say she's ever gotten my drink wrong when ordering directly from her. she's great. HMS is a dive bar that happens to have a full service kitchen and restaurant. my gripe with hms despite some decent food and drinks is the wait staff and security. the waitresses for the sit down sections are never friendly. mind you, i've been here hundreds of times. i don't care about friendly service generally if the food is on point. just communicate and do what needs to be done. i'm only compelled to leave this subpar review because my last encounter here left such a bad taste in my mouth. i ordered my usual baseball steak, which was perfect, but the steamed broccoli was definitely undercooked. that's fine. it happens. but when i pointed out the broccoli telling the waitress the steak was fine, but it was just broccoli, she just took the entire plate away. doesn't say a word or apologize, and takes off. she finally brings back my half eaten steak, and meanwhile, i had to flag down another waitress who snaps at me the broccoli is coming when i was trying to order another drink. like, c'mon, just tell me what you're doing and how long it's going to take especially where YOUR kitchen screwed up the order. the icing on the cake was they got my second drink order wrong. screw the service here. security is also overly meddlesome. i remember a potential patron bringing in his SERVICE dog (not ESA) and identifying the dog as such, and security was giving him crap about the dog, and they got into a loud argument about it. i sided with the service dog owner trying to get the security guy to relent. it's prohibited for them to request service dog proof under the ADA, but security could not wrap his head around that. i've also had security be really aggressive and annoying about a friend just holding a vape in his hand, and security chasing him around telling him he cannot smoke inside multiple times. HE WASN'T EVEN smoking inside. it's the same older asian security guard. overly zealous. chill the eff out, filipino paul blart. other than the waitresses and security, HMS is a quintessential dive bar that's a good change of pace from the usual ktown establishments with reasonable food and drink prices. it'll take me a while to get over my last experience here, but i'll probably begrudgingly return some day. hopefully with better, friendlier service and a security guy with common sense and crowd skills. geez. read more

You don't "necessarily" come here or the food (although it's pretty good). It's about ambiance, and getting in on a little "Old" Los Angeles while it's still here. I do like that they have a couple of monitors at the bar for viewing sports, but still maintains that old skool dive bar feel. I did have some fettucini alfredo today, and it was pretty darn good. Finally checked out HMS after waiting long enough. Of course I had heard about the establishment, and I also live right down the block. After I noticed that it was added as one of the best restaurants in the city, I had to stop by. Overall, I'd say it's well worth it. The place has an old swanky vibe to it, with great servers and a good amount of seating. I noticed that it's usually pretty crowded whenever I step in; there always seems to be a lot of tables taken. Sad to see the Bounty going downhill. Stepped in for a bite because I hadn't been here in awhile. I probably first started going to the Bounty back in 1995 maybe. Maybe the food was always bad. I was mainly there just drinking and my 20s. But I don't remember being that bad. Tonight I ordered a Moscow mule. The ginger beer was completely flat and for some reason it was completely overpowered by basil in the drink. We had them bring some bread and butter to the table and the bread was stale . I ordered a shrimp cocktail and while the shrimp was very clean, it was also obviously frozen because it was so watery and not good at all. Didn't even finish it. Also, how they managed this I have no idea, but the crackers that they served with it. The plain generic crackers that come in the plastic wrappers were actually stale. The petite filet mignon came out and was barely recognizable as a filet mignon. No sear on it at all, and I had to ask for them to bring me some A1 sauce so I could completely mask this unseasoned piece of meat. And then again, somehow the baked potato was dry! I can't even explain that one. I know you're thinking it's a big potato of courses dry but this was different. My friend ordered the Seabass and it also was not seasoned and just soaked in butter. She took a couple of bites and just stopped eating it. read more

HMS Bounty is a fun place for a nice meal or some strong drinks if you're not expecting a typical L.A. experience. I wouldn't even call it a typical dive bar experience - it's old-fashioned and a little dusty, but it's well-kept, efficiently staffed, and brimming with vintage charm and Hollywood history (for example, one of the booths must've been a favourite of William Randolph Hearst, as it bears a plaque with his name). It's a dim, windowless space with nautical décor, giving you the feeling you're actually on a ship. The only restrooms feel like they're seven seas away in the main apartment building, and make sure you take the hallway that leads to them, not the residential area, or else the lobby attendant will bite your freakin' head off. The menu is not sophisticated, but the food is consistently good - we've tried a steak, fish, a club sandwich. They have an Anchor beer that feels approps to order there, and their classic mixed drinks are always heavy on the "grog". The bartenders, servers, and management are always pleasant. HMS is pretty inconveniently located if you're not immediately local to its neighbourhood, but it's worth making a trip to try it at least once. read more

This was my first time dining at HMS Bounty, and unfortunately, it will be my last. When I walked in, I loved the speakeasy-style vibe and was excited to try it out. However, the service set the tone for a disappointing experience. As soon as I sat at the bar, the bartender's greeting felt unwelcoming, almost as if I didn't belong there. While I had to ask if they even served food, guests who came in after me were greeted more warmly and offered drinks right away. I ordered the lentil soup and the baseball steak (medium rare) with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The bartender checked in only once, about 20 minutes into my meal, and overall her attentiveness and hospitality were lacking. The food itself was underwhelming, bland, unseasoned, and definitely not worth returning for. What could have been a pleasant first experience was overshadowed by poor service and mediocre food. While the atmosphere and background music is nice, I can't recommend HMS Bounty based on my visit. 2/5 stars. read more

One of smattering of old school restaurant bars in LA. This 60 year old Time Capsule hasn't changed much in all those years. It's a classic menu of steaks, chops and some Italian. It's all good not great but the prices are unbeatable. Cocktails are stiff singles. You can still order two for less than one drink at a trendy place. You walk in and it is very much an old dive bar, but when you travel to the back it opens up into this very interesting restaurant. Bathrooms were also very clean. Food: The meats are where it's at. This place is like walking through a Time Machine. I don't know how they keep their prices so low! The first time I had an espresso martini and fries in the bar. The next time I had fish and chips to go. Both times the fries were cooked perfectly. I added my own salt. The espresso martini is basic and consistently good regardless of who is behind the bar. I think it might be made with coffee rather than espresso but it still hits the spot for only $11 The inside looks like the inside of an old wooden ship! The booths are overstuffed. As a straightforward reviewer, I look for the following: Service, Presentation, Taste, and Experience. I provide direct feedback and recommendations to build a better experience not only for customers but also for the business itself. My partner brought me to this restaurant as he has been here a few times, with no issues. But, that day, was a different story. Service: We walked into the restaurant and were greeted by the female waiter. We sat down and she gave us the menus. A few minutes later she walked over and asked for drinks. She left, came back after a few minutes and she asked us for our food order. When we both ordered our food, she then said, "The cook went on break and will come back in 20 minutes". We said okay. She left and we waited. 30 minutes later, nothing. 40 minutes later, nothing. 50 minutes later, nothing. A whole hour has passed by and nothing. We were a little concerned about why it was taking over an hour to get our food when the waiter said the cook would come back in 20 minutes. We were getting frustrated and annoyed as our drinks were getting watered down, we had to repay the meter due to the timer, and we just overall had to wait to get our food. The Sprite that I ordered did not taste like, it was watered down, probably because of waiting so long. I then asked the waiter to exchange it due to it not tasting good. I asked for a Coke instead, she was hesitant and said, "I'll give you sprite" and I told her, "No, I want Coke". Then she said, okay I'll bring the Coke. About 2-3 minutes later she brought over my drink. It was also watered down, with no carbonation or anything in it. I just drank it to avoid any further problems. The food finally came out, and then we started eating. During eating, the waiter came by twice to ask if we were good. The second female waiter came over and took the plates that were empty. Which was a good thing on her part to avoid table clutter. My partner was attempting to get the check, but couldn't get the attention of the waiter as she was multi-tasking, working hard, to fulfill their customers and as she was working the bar making drinks. So, couldn't really complain there. She then saw my partner's hand gesture of a check and they brought it over within a few minutes. We checked the handwritten bill and it was slightly higher than expected as she charged us more for the drink portion. The soda and lemonade were $4 each, but came out to $11, with $3 extra added to that section with no explanation. They grabbed the check and walked off to finalize the payment. We got it back, and due to the long waiting time for food, awful drinks, overcharge on our bill with no explanation, we decided not proceed with a tip. While, we do like tipping, this one was a little too unacceptable to our liking to process a tip. When we were walking out the main door, the waiter, unexpectedly (and hostile) ran out the door to tell us that she needed a 15-20% tip on the check. She said she didn't add the gratuity because she "trusted us". I didn't understand that part, but we kept it professional. She handed us the check and we explained VERY thoroughly and she still attempted to beg. We told her unfortunately no and she agreed to move along. Presentation: The atmosphere in the restaurant was nice, as it was a mid-1900s vibe. The music was playing in the background and everyone was just talking. The table we sat at didn't have anything on it. After like 40-50 minutes of waiting, a male waiter/worker came over and started placing utensils, napkins, etc on the table. Assuming we were gonna be given our food within a couple of minutes...nope, we waited another 15-20 minutes for it to come out. The food finally came out, the pasta shrimp had a nice look with shrimp showing and pasta sauce all mixed in. My partner had the sandwich with fries and it was golden brown and crisp to his liking. Taste: The pasta with shrimp was good, maybe it needed some seasoning like pepper, but other than that it was good. The bread that came with it was a little soggy, I don't know if it was from the sauce or what, but I didn't really like the bread. My partner said his sandwich was good, as he gets that often when he comes. The fries with his sandwich were golden brown and crisp, maybe a little too fried. But, were good! Experience: The experience here was good, until it went downhill towards the middle to the end. From overcharging with no explanation, to telling us that a 20-minute wait turned into an hour+, to non-good tasting drinks, we just did not like this experience that afternoon. I did not expect a waiter to barge out of a restaurant demanding a tip, especially becoming hostile at first then calmed down after hearing the explanation. I don't think anyone would expect to go to a classic feeling dive bar in the middle of k-town, but here we are. It hits home for me, feels like a small-town bar in the middle of a big city environment. As soon as you walk in you're greeted by a dimly lit nautical themed dive with hospitable waitstaff and a bar full of a regulars. The menu. Wow. Time must have stopped at some point because inflation doesn't seem to have hit here. Prices are something you can only dream of normally.
